If you're gonna flash any ROM you will need cwm...see my links...kk
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium

CM9 is an awesome rom for it
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app

Twrp2.2 is even better than cwm these days... just made the switch this week myself, and I'm never going back.
As for roms, just read the dev section and pick the one that sounds like it would work best for you. They all have their pluses and minuses, so choosing one for you is kinda silly...

Ignore them. You don't want a touch version of CWM to start off with. With the regular version, you can't screw up. There's up, down, and select.
You'll want to start by looking at the stickies in the development section.
When you think your ready....ignore the pull of your beautiful device, and all this gadgety hacker, and do a search for " how to use titanium backup ". Download the app, and do a batch backup of " backup all user apps + system data". This will backup almost everything. Your wifi passwords, your wallpapers, your settings, and even where you are in games and apps (in 99% of cases).
The best money you can currently spend is arguably the pro version, which allows you to do batch restores-- I.e. when you wipe your phone or move to a new ROM, or Update to a new version of the ROM, you can restore all of your apps at once, or even pick and choose them. These apps and settings will be backed up to your SD card, which will be untouched during flashes, rom installs, rooting, etcetera. With the free version, you have to do them one by one. The pro version also let's you backup to BOX.NET, Dropbox, or Google Drive. If you look around you can find a way to get 50 gigs free of Drop box space, the most popular cloud storage service right now. This is a must....if you ever water log your phone, corrupt your SD card, or something else, you'll always have a backup. You can also schedule backups to run while you sleep.
But after a night or two of reading and watching YouTube videos, you can head into the abyss (you'll have our support. Pm me if you need, as I get notifications when someone does....and I'm usually quick to respond).
But just follow these steps until you have Recovery installed, and have made a backup of the whole system (also known as a Nandroid).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586223
After that, I'd recommend Flapjaxx ROM to start off with, because its a little like the Stock ROM, but has additional features that can be installed, or downloaded right from the phone. It also enables tethering.
Read here to freshen up join your terminology, but don't follow these instructions. The other ones seem easier to follow.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1483113
And lastly, here's FJ's ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1664980
A ROM isn't necessary, however, because you can also just root and use the stock one.
On the first thread I posted, you'll want to read up and follow the steps in this order (I recommend the non touch version of clockwork mod so you can understand how the UI works, before you use a version that requires mastering use of the unlit soft keys on the bottom of the phone, and also introduces a couple variables, accidental and non accidental touches. Up and down, and enter are easy enough, and will get you familiar without increasing the chance to screw something up. Theoretically, they're the same. But bear with me.
On the first thread, follow steps:
1.
2.
3.
4a.
5a.
6a.
7.
8.
And then read the rest of the first thread. The second link I posted will help you decipher the language. Also, I'd spend the first two nights just reading, so you're COMPLETELY familiar with what you want/have to do. There are at least half a dozen flavours or Ice Cream Sandwich out, and you'll want to look in the development section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1496
Last all of the different ROMs, the screenshots, the features, and the comments, to fin what people like. Don't read into the negative comments and the issues too much however, and don't let them discourage you, because most of the issues that people have you'll A) never notice, because yoiull still be learning by the time they're fixed, B) won't bother you because they only involve doing specific things, and C) could be avoided by following the instructions closely.
Lastly, look up YouTube videos.
Search for "root att galaxy note Odin"
"flash PDA Odin"
" how to use clockwork mod"
"How to use titanium backup"
"androidcritics". (This guy does rom reviews on YouTube...he's a little young, but generally is real thorough....find his YouTube channel, and you'll be able to see what the most popular ROMs look like when they're installed and running on our device.
Lastly, if you like a really clean device, consider CM9 as a ROM, which is built from Google's open source code, and is built the way that Google intended android to be....it has no bloat ware (aside from a few must-have apps that our wonderful developers have decided are best used with their ROM), and is built to be customizable. For the moment the non-CM9 ROMs have a larger selection of mods, customization, Widgets, and apps, but CM9 really takes the cake. There are a couple downsides to CM9 though, and if you want me to elaborate, or would like a suggestion on a CM9 ROM (I've used almost every ROM ever made for our device) PM me, and I can come back to this thread, or talk to you in private.
Lastly again: Seriously. Don't be in a rush. Watch a ton of YouTube videos, and each time you do something (make a backup, root, install clockwork mod) read each thread, or watch each video 3 times. Let it sink in overnight, and then read 1 last time to make sure you have all the prerequisite files, and understand all of the steps.
And lastly, lastly, there are something like 4 versions of the galaxy note, including the international one. Ours has specific software. Using other version of the not e's software, or root/ flashing methods WILL brick your device! Everything you need is here, in this branch of the forum (look for i717 in the upper left hand corner before you follow any instructions...only follow instructions from, and watch videos from people who use the term "At&t galaxy note", "rogers galaxy note", or "sgh-i717" (sgh-i717r is the same).
I understand this is a lot, but it's all important. Feel free to ask questions (in the Q&A section of course) and plenty of us will be there to help you. Some people might flame you for not searching, but if the information in those threads that I linked to isn't clear enough, or you need more information, ignore them and ask. Everything you need is in the threads I gave you.

I liked his post because it just said, heres a decent setup, not the best, not the worst (only thing I've ROMed so far, so just my speculation) and heres how you can get it done, play with it, learn, read more and do it again if you find another thing you'd want to try.

BOY THANKS A LOT FOR THIS I WILL CHECK IT OUT AND WILL LET YOU KNOW WHEN I START DOING STUFF SO APPARENTLY GALAXY NOTE IS GONNA BE VERY FUN WHEN I START LEARNING TO FLASH

[Q] Two questions as I try to organize myself before rooting

So I've done a few roots before but each time I always do the same research, going through all of the guides and making sure I'm fully aware of everything that could factor in before proceeding (one bad experience'll do that to ya). I'm pretty sure I have everything together and just have three questions before I begin:
1) I have an AT&T Galaxy SII but am not sure whether or not I have the UCKK6 over the air update. How would I go about checking this?
2) I was mostly interested in Villainrom as a custom rom, however, I noticed that there is only a release in the international version of the Galaxy S II (at least as far as I can find). Do the differing features between the two phones mean that I am unable to install this? If so I was going to go with CM7 (I've been a CM fan for a while now and with ICS coming it was a close decision between the two), however, I noticed on their official site the phone pictured with the Galaxy SII section is the International version. This kinda ties back in with my first question, being I don't want to attempt to flash something that has a chance of not working
3) I planned on using superclick to root, and then I have mobile odin pro to flash the rom. As far as I know these are the only two programs/files I need for the process besides the Rom, is that correct?
Thank you for your time!

1) Settings > About Phone > Android Version (2.3.6 = KK6, 2.3.4 = KH7)
2) Hellraiser (look in the development forums); you may have a problem with the links. Someone posted theirs, but I can't find it. Hopefully someone can post theirs here.
3) I don't know. I think it'd have to be a tar file. Typically, you want to get a CWM kernel and install from there (see stickies or development; somewhere around here there's a guide). Creepy Crawly's sticky in general is probably what you want. I only use mobile odin to flash modems and kernels; hadn't used it to flash an entire rom. The only other use I've seen others report is flashing firmwares.

1. Settings > about phone then scroll to the bottom.
2. Use hellraiser to run i9100 roms minus any ics roms. Look in developmentsection.
3. Look in sticky section for root instructions. After that mobile Odin a custom kernel then find the ROM you want flash in cwm then flash hellraiser package

There's no reason for you to be an asshole... I've flashed phones before. Because I wasn't sure whether this specific update info could be found in that section or not is the reason I asked. Sure I could've Googled it just as easily but I had a more important question to ask, namely the one referring to the use of international roms. I've been modifying devices for about six years now, from flashing/upgrading/downgrading PSPs, iPhones, rooting phones and various devices in between. Your advice I'm sure applies to some people but that doesn't mean you give it sounding like an elitist prick. Get over yourself, you're not some master flasher and you have no idea my specific experience. I'm waiting for an all in one because its easier and I don't necessarily NEED a rooted phone right now, not because I'm so technologically inept I couldn't figure it out.
If you couldn't figure out something as basic as finding which ROM version your phone is running, then you certainly are likely to find yourself among those who come in here looking for help after a flash goes bad. The forums are littered with them. I wasn't trying to sound like a prick (although I often do) with that reply, I was just encouraging you to take my earlier advice on reading up more before attempting a flash. Everything you asked about could be answered by just doing a little research instead of starting a new thread.

I've done plenty of generic reading on it, plenty of nooby guides, plenty of flashes. I wasn't certain whether or not that update was something associated with the overall "system firmware" or whatever the terminology is. Simple coding for a dumb noob

So, as the title suggests I know absolutely nothing about coding, basically, and I was wanting to either learn some basic stuff/ have someone make a few(or one combined) apks.
I was wanting to create a few apps that are just basic commands that would do a few things I'd like. Yes, I'm aware that these exist on the marketplace, but many of them are full of stuff that I don't care about/ don"t want and just needlessly take up space with flashy backgrounds and stuff.
1) I want a simple one click on, one click off button to turn on the led flashlight for my phone, a widgetesque kind of thing
2) I want a simple programmable stop watch countdown timer(I imagine this one would be a lot more labor intensive so I'm really not expecting anything for this one, but if someone has made their own that's really simple and basic I might like it)
I don't know much about coding but from what I've read its a simple code to turn the flash on and off, also, I don't even need the app to open up a new window or anything, it could just be a little icon you push to turn on the flash light and push again to turn it off.
I appreciate comments, even if they're just to say something like, "Are you dumb, this stuff is way over your head" or "Learn it yourself noob"

[Q] New to Note

had an Infuse for about a year. loved it and was suprised as to what i was able to learn. i was actually able to trouble shoot some of other peoples issues. most of it was people not following OP correctly. some of them you would think they were scoring with a girl for the first time in high school. they just plug it in and blow their load.
However, day after thankgsiving AT&T had some incredible deals for a refurbed Note. cant beat $31.
I have been learking here for almost a month and reading as i did on the Infuse. trying to gain the confidence i need to take the leap and root.
one thing i am noticing or think i am noticing.....or maybe i dont understand.
stock rooted? you can root phone but not necessarily have CWM ?
Infuse had an all in one package.
from what i am gathering.....when i flash, do i need to flash rom, modem and kernal on 3 different flashes? trying to peice a package that works best? cant say that i notice in descriptions (as with Infuse) ex ; "Joe Blows ROM
UCLB3 modem
super nuclear kernal with OC/UV
i am sure this is in the Super Everything Thread, but sometimes my brain pan does not absorb everything. thats why i read read read and i will read some more. again responses from the more experience give me confidence.
probably my hugest issue is, it seems no matter what rom i look at the main issue is random reboots or phone just shutting down. to me does this almost negate some benefits of rooting?
everybody said the Infuse was unbrickable? for the most part i beleive that, usually somebody not following directions was the problem. regardless, super easy to unbrick and return to stock.
However, when i hear, Do you have a jig? or sending phone out to have fixed, makes me wonder if the Note bricks easier and harder to unbrick. I know that if I try, i can REALLY eff something up.
dont want to do that.
i know every phone is different and every rom works differently on those phones, so i know not to ask which rom is better for me. if i decide to, i will find which rom I like the best.
my Infuse HAS grown up to be a Note and i am happy to climb aboard this forum
To root this phone you flash a kernel to the stock rom. But to do this you have to flash a replacement recovery, and that is done with a pc using Samsung's software named Odin.
i am familiar with Odin. i have used it on many occasions and am comfortable with that. however even in the reading i have done this is the first i have heard of a "replacement recovery".
this sounds as if flashing the new kernal to the stock rom is what will root the phone?
i thought the tar file is what did this.
i will keep reading until i come up 2 threads or suggestions of rooting that sound as if the process is the same.
dont misunderstand, i am not saying that anybody is wrong. i am sure all of these methods work. again, if i want to i can really screw something up. i am sure some of these different methods are some different terminology. mainly i want to feel confident and have my process firmly embedded in my mind and act it out properly.
check this post out if you want a super easy way to get started...

The stock recovery doesn't let you flash anything. So you flash the replacement recovery with Odin. You are replacing the stock with either CWR or TWRP.
Then, using the new recovery you flash the rooted kernel, or any rom you like.

i am sure i will be getting plenty of use out of that one.
appreciate your help. both you and the captain explained it very plainly and simply, eliminating any confusion.
thank you both.actually very similar to Infuse.
now i just have to decide whether i would benefit from it.
hmmmmmm
Installing the recovery is worth the trouble. Besides the romantic flashing, you can change modems, install mods, make a backup.

yeah, and i have done all that with the Infuse. other then mods, tweaks and themes, what else did i benefit from?
Infuse was on Froyo and had a multitude of ROMS and interfaces to choose from. GB, ICS and JB. i am already ICS and JB is the only step up. actually with the similarities between the two, how much am i really gaining or what am i changing?
im kind of shopping some ROMS and looking for something to catch my eye. i am not seeing too many differences. i do have a bigger screen though and i did like the tablet mode of PA. only that and CM10 were the only ones that had tablet mode there.
im really not in any hurry and there is the rumor of official JB for the Note, but i know how that went with GB for the Infuse. the pushed it out too quick and had many problems. unofficial releases were more reliable and theming was pretty cool.
once again, i appreciate the input there Ranger.
All this, but no where has it been said that you have indeed a i717 Note. This, I think is how most people find themselves with a brick. Being in the wrong device section of the forum. Trivial and redundant as it sounds no one can afford to get this confused.
:screwy:Never mind, see it now, just had to run my big mouth, didn't I ?:banghead:
BLACKSTAR XI -SGH-I717 xda-developers app SAMSUNG done right
Yeaaaah, ooops. Well there's another use for the Spen and a place to store it.
But you are correct, I have witnessed the destruction of at least ten notes and some S2's by being in the wrong forum.
This is dangerous business.

[Q] Little verification before flashing first rom

Hello, I was just wanting to get a few things verified before I flashed my first rom. I have been following these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2006946
Where it says to root, then unlock the bootloader. First 2 are checked. so no problem there
3rd step it talks about using CWM but when i was running the app that the instructions suggested, the app suggested to install TWRP so that's what I did. So then i rebooted into twrp and said "backup" and checked everything so that it backs up all my data. Is that what is considered a nandroid backup? and so from there I'm safe.
Also I had titanium and said to backup up everything and anything from there as well. So both of those will be uploaded to my box account along with remaining in my PC.
Also for good measure, I plugged in my phone, opened explorer and just copied everything within the internal storage and sd card so that I have those too. Not sure if they will be useable at all but figured why not.
So would I have put myself in a good position such that if I mess up later on, I can revert back to the way I am right now?
TWRP just doesn't call it a nandroid back up like CWM when it's finished backing up so as long as TWRP finished successfully you're fine. The only current ROM I knlw of right now that doesn't flash with TWRP is the Korean JB port and that is stated in bold red letters in the OP so you can flash away in my opinion. Looks like you have it all covered.
As a side note I have had three different LG devices and honestly find them near impossible to permanently brick. LGNPST became one of my best friends a long time ago and his brother QPST as well, lol.

Ahh okay thanks. I didn't realize that nandroid was just CWM terminology. Good to know I was doing everything right. And I wasn't looking for Korean JB.
Oh good to know. I will have to mess with LGNPST just to make sure I can do everything properly incase I ever need to actually do it. Good to hear it's pretty reliable and thanks again.

Good to see your trying to cover all your bases. Don't over complicate things for yourself, though. As long as your simply flashing roms built for your device and following directions you'll be ok. You're bound to run into a few hiccups if you get the bug, like most of us have, and start flashing everything you can. But no worries, there's always a way to fix.
Also, since your brand new to this stuff, read up on the threads and give them a few days before flashing Anything. Let some of the more experienced guys test them out and leave feedback.
Have fun!
Edit: one last thing, TiBu is more hassle free if you only use it for app + data, as opposed to, system data.

Also, if you are using the recovery installed by FreeGee, I'd update to a more current one found in the development thread. The first couple were a little glitchy.
Edit: great advice from Tango above. They usually recommend to never restore system data. It will render your phone's ROM FUBAR more often than not.

Okay thanks. Honestly, I'm not too concerned about my apps and data. I was really just doing everything so that I can get a working phone again quickly if I end up breaking something. I don't expect to be changing too often, I'm waiting for slick rom v4 to come out, then a few days after I'll be flashing my phone. I was just wanting to get everything ready now incase I run into anything unexpected I dont' rush it due to wanting to try the rom.

Uh...I used FreeGee from the app store, so whatever that one installs. Good to know it is out of date. I'll go check out the new version and try to get that one installed.

Bleh I need to wait 5 minutes between posts and edits.
Well it looks like my TWRP is v2.3.2.3 which seems to be the neweest version (although really old 11/28/12)
Also I suppose I should run TiBu with app+data only if using system data causes such big problems. Thanks for the warning guys.
Just remember one of the most important things to do is read, read and read again when you first start out. There's also plenty of help here as long as you are respectful and ask in a detailed intelligent manner.
This is one of the best communities on XDA imo. Great people and devs.

It seems most of the usual jerks you'd find don't have the patience to wait for the JB source to come along, so don't use this phone. Lets hope that they don't start flocking here now that we've got it.

Reading. Yes. I enjoy learning and understanding (what I actually can) about what is going on. I got this phone the week it came out and have been waiting and watching while the community develops. It feels okay now to be jumping on board. I had to learn quite a bit coming from iOS. I jailbroke it and used mods but I'm just a user not a developer. So really wanted to learn all the safety precautions for android.

I was worried about posting my question and people just flaming me. But I definitely appreciate the help that has been offered. Makes me feel a lot more comfortable getting this done, that if something does go wrong I have somewhere I can turn to.

[GUIDE] The All In One Guide!

All-In-One Guide
By: ilxaot
9-27-13
Introduction -
Okay, so our phone's a tad.. odd. At least, the American variant is. Thanks to T-Maybe and LGay our bootloader is locked, and has baffled plenty of users. Look at our forum views and the people that visit, but don't become members? I understand some of them are lazy and such, but many are driven away by the current "methods" to unlocking the bootloader for full customization. So, I've come here to sort everything into one nice little thread, because I'm bored and I have nothing to do on my Friday night. Unlike much of my generation, I don't leave high school to go to parties and consume kegs until I puke, roll blunts until I fly, or get on speed and run around around naked eating people's eyeballs out. I prefer to sit inside and type guides ^-^ So, without further ado, let's begin, shall we?
BTW: To anybody (Many people) who saw my Unlocked Bootloader Mods thread, this will include much of that, and other sections. Read onn maties.
Table of Contents
-Introduction (You read this.. I hope)
-Table of Contents (I wonder where that would be?)
-Getting Started (This is for the newbzors. Veteran users, read on)
-What's this bootloader thing? (A spiral of condemnation)
-The Fork in the Road (Choices, choices, choices)
-Now, what can I do with root? (Gee, I wonder what.)
-My phone is slow, can I have mods? (Sure!)
-My apps suck, can I have apps? (Of course not.)
-Bye (Read this and I'll feel cared for)
Getting Started
Okay, so, first off, if you're new, welcome to the forums! There's a lot of great guys here. Some are complete.. Well, I won't say that publicly. There are certain characters who I'm not fond of, but most of them are a fantastic group of guys! So, if you ever need help with something, ask one of these guys: @kuma82, @BioDesigner48, @Lelus, @carloswii5. They're awesome ^-^
So, with that being said, here's our current situation. We have a nice mid-high range phone. We CAN root it easily, however, we cannot unlock our bootloader using the standardized "adb reboot oem-unlock" command. Don't panic! It's really no need to get confused. I'll make this as simple as possible, until even the stupid little iSheep can understand a portion(;
So basically, we have root on the majority of our devices. What we do NOT have, is a majority of unlocked bootloaders. It seems quite randomized and pretty thrown-together if you ask me, so I haven't exactly gotten into it. BUT! I have experimented with modifications and tweaks that affect the stock ROM, to make it more intense. So basically, this thread is about everything on this phone. Because I'm bored. That's why.
What's This Bootloader Thing?
Remember how I said I'd make it simple to where iSheep, iDiots, iTards, and iPreps could understand? Well, here we go. Experienced users brace yourselves! Unspecific noob answer inbound! The bootloader, can be thought of, as what "loads" the "boot." I'll leave it at that. Since it's locked, you can't modify the "boot," therefore the system is left largely unchanged. There are a great plenty questions and a great less amount of confident answers, but with luck, and some faith, you can unlock it! Here are some links to some guides if you're interested.
Unspecific, outdated - HERE
Specific, Recent - HERE
Video, Specific - HERE
Best of luck. If you're intimidated, keep reading this post. Honestly, there's still some work left to be done ^-^
The Fork In The Road
Well, now you have a choice. You can either root, install busybox, obtain a "bootstrap" recovery, and flash mods to your build.prop and stuff for dayzzz. Or, you can take the dark, usually antagonizing way out, the unlocking of the bootloader. Best of luck ^-^ Simply remember that if you FUBAR your phone we aren't liable.
Personally, I recommend sticking with root and not unlocking the bootloader. But that's just me. Have I tried to unlock before? Yes, and I didn't succeed (PC hates me...) but I'm happy enough on my modded stock ROM.
Now, What Can I Do With Root?
This is as easy as it gets. HERE
Rooted? That's right! Go get 'em boy! Kidding, that's easy. Now, go to the Play Store and download a "Busybox" app, and install busybox. Then, go to THIS thread and install the L9 Bootstrap Recovery. It's easy as 1,2,3. Download, open, install. ^-^ I'd also recommend finding some "Xposed" framework modules, they're increasing in popularity. Plenty of them can be found on the web and especially these forums. (derp) You're incredibly welcome
Now, here's a brief list of things you can do!
-Theme your phone with XThemes here!
-Get more memory on your phone here!
-Overclock your phone here!
-Kick people from your WiFi here!
-Snoop through people's data over WiFi here!
-Hack your games here!
-Backup your phone here!
-Tether your phone here!
My phone is slow, Can I have mods?
Sure! I'll post a link to the Development and Hacking section of the General XDA forums. This is where developer modify and tweak stock Android files such as the build.prop (incredibly modifiable) and init.d scripts. Go to the Play Store and search "init.d" and find an app that installs it for you. It's quite simple, really. Now, are you ready?!
Go here. You're welcome. Find a mod that suits you, download it to your SD card, boot into recovery, and FLASH IT! MUAHAHA.
Now, if you'd like an old thread of mine with mods I found to work well together to improve our specific device, go visit this thread. It got popular at one point ^-^ Then I got tired of updating it with new mods. Lulz.
P.S. My personal favorite is the CrossBreeder mod.
My apps suck, can I have apps?
Sure! When I decide to make this section. It's 11:48 and I'm incredibly tired and craving a nice, tall glass of water. So, when I get bored again, I'll update this section. (Forewarning: There's a good bit of apps ;D) So, yeah. Sorry about this whole "I'm too lazy to finish this guide come back later" thing.
Bye
^^ Yepp. Adios. Tankzz ferr reeding. :3
My name is, my name is, not slim shady, lol
:good: Thanks for helping everyone out, and thanks for you kind words.
lol The only problem is @Kuma won't be able to help anyone, if they send him(or her) a PM.
Just thought I'll let you know
Lol I wonder if that's an old account I made way back when. I kind of remember making a account, but can't really remember.
Oh crap! Kuma82. My bad XD I'll fix it when I update it. On my phone ATM/:
