Hi, I have searched on this subject but can't seem to find an answer. So here goes; Google gave paid attendees of the 2011 IO, SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets. Is this device kept up to date by Google? If it hasn't already, is it expected to receive the update to Jelly Bean?
SAMSUNG haven't even updated their stock version to Ice Cream Sandwich yet, and ICS will have been released a year in October.

No,if i remember correctly the latest stock Android version for the IO Tab was the 3.1 honeycomb.
The thing that i'm not aware of ,is if there is a Custom rom (CM9) for this tab.

Hi nighthawk696969, thanks for your reply. I bought my girlfriend a Galaxy Tab around 6 months ago. She already had an ASUS Transformer, but the Galaxy Tab is batter suited to her needs. I flashed a custom ROM based on CM9 which runs fine, but isn't perfect. But better for her because the ICS version of Gapps are better.
My question arose from the fact that I'm thinking of getting a Galaxy Nexus to replace my LG O2X because I want OS updates to be timely, and not take years. Which reminded me that the Galaxy Tab, whilst never an official NEXUS device, it was given by Google to attendees at an IO slightly over a year ago.
But you say, the current stock Google release for this device is Honeycomb? WOW! That is lame of Google. My girlfriends old ASUS which is sitting in a box, already has had ICS since January, and two updates since then.
This situation is what I think of when I hear the term "fragmentation". Thanks. Anil

Very possible. Google Nexus is not that much of a hardware leap from the SGS2. It will come to the SII

watched the event myself as well... Not too much impressed tho... Its coming on verizon for now.
Give it time… you'll see a ROM or two out by Thanksgiving IMO. The sdk has been released, and once the Nexus hits the market, and a system dump is "in the wild", devs will cook ROMs like crazy!

Is ICS's native GUI hardware accelerated by GPU?? From the demo, it doesn't seems perfectly smooth to me. Although Android 3.x was promoted as hardware accelerated GUI, I still find it very laggy scrolling through the homepages when there are some widgets. Putting it besides iPads, it's really a negative to Android.
Not supposed to say this maybe, but I'm underwhelmed by the UI in ICS. Had the same feeling about much of Honeycomb, really.
The UI is looking more and more Metro-like and ultra minimalist to the point of absurdity with every iteration. :shudder:
Flame away, but Gingerbread looks far better to me aesthetically. Give me the under the hood fixes, better multiprocessor support, etc. , but leave what works alone, IMO. If I wanted a Win-doze phone 7 device, I'd buy one.

No but really that's a question only Samsung can answer. We have the SDK but we need a system dump and even then who knows what hurdles we have to jump to get it to function properly.
Just keep an eye on various development sections.

Okay, so we've already seen Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Nexus S, but that was decidedly... unofficial. We've just heard straight from Google's Gabe Cohen that the Nexus S will definitely be getting ICS. In fact, both he and Matias Duarte think most Gingerbread devices will see an upgrade, saying: "Currently in the process for releasing Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S. Theoretically should work for any 2.3 device." It's hardly a surprise and there's no specific word on timing just yet, but hopefully it won't take long to move that vanilla Android device up to something with a breaded exterior.
I guess that would be a yes, I can't see Samsung not updating a hugely popular handset (which has yet to have a real update) but I can not see them doing it anytime soon unless they drop the 2.3.5 update like they did with 2.3.4 to look at ICS.
As you know for Google phones it's immediately but for other brand it takes some time. Personally I think it will be after 3 or more months for official Samsung ROM.
They'll want to sell Galaxy Nexus for Christmas, but I don't expect Samsung to release for the SGS2 until New Year.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? 9 months? In 9 months Samsung ships Galaxy S4 with Android 5.0...

Android 2.3.5 was out on July and Samsung official 2.3.5 for S2 was out in October... It takes 3 months, pheraps 4 monts, not 9...

Of course it will kids...as soon as this stuff is out in the wild there'll be buggy stuff, and then good stuff. Wasn't the firmware for the SGS2 out before the phone was?

Last week I bought a new Samsung Galaxy Ace. I'm new to cell phones and did not know about the new ICS Android version that came out, or that this phone isn't (officially) compatible.
I'm sad to find out that it cannot be upgraded to the newest Android 4.0, since I thought that 2.3 was the newest (I now know better).
My question is, was it a really bad mistake to get this new Galaxy Ace since it can only run Gingerbread? I cannot exchange it. Since I'm locked into a 3 year contract, will this phone become completely obsolete quickly?
I'm hoping I will still be able to get decent compatibility with it (for apps) for the next 3 years until my contact is up.

I just want to make sure that I will be able to use the newest apps and other things with my new phone.
I talked with my provider and the store I bought it from.... I may be able to exchange this phone for a Samsung Nexus S or Sony Xperia Ray. Would that be a good one to get instead? Do you know if the hardware and CPU design is newer and if it can keep up better?
Would the Nexus S or Sony Xperia Ray be a decent choice for a new ICS compatible phone on a budget?

If the first Transformer got ICS, I sure would hope the Transformer Prime gets Jelly Bean.
The update for the Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus and the Xoom is coming mid-July. I assume that Asus already as a copy of Jelly Bean since it build the Nexus 7. They should be already working on it for the Tf700, Tf300 and the Tf201. I assume sometime in late July or August.

That's what I was thinking. Excluding the keyboard, our device is identical to the Nexus 7 plus one addition camera and a microSD card slot. It shouldn't be too hard. Plus, with Google supervising the firmware, maybe they worked out all those weird driver glitches from Nvidia.
Give me some sweet Jelly Bean 4.1 to beta test please.

Remember, we still have another "update" that's being tested by beta testers and that's not even Android 4.04 I believe (I could be wrong). Although, the good news ... or think is good news is that.. Gary expected different "beta" testing update but didn't get it... thus, Asus is possibly switching their resource into Jellybean update for current products. But yea... just because Xoom is receiving Jellybean in mid-July doesn't mean Asus products will.....

Yup, Jellybean SDK is on Linux kernel 2.6.29
We will probably get it around or when the Infinity 700 gets it.. don't expect it before that releases stateside at least I'm not

Yes my LTE is on 3.0.8 on stock IMM76K... most tabs are still on 2.6 though
If i'm correct, Jelly Bean will first be exclusive to Nexus 7 for a certain period before they can release it to their tablet. Like before (Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich).
I hope the 'buttery smooth' project has actually really fixed the lags at random point.
I would rather see Asus release a stable and properly functioning version of ICS, instead of another half-assed attempt at a new version of the OS. I don't need the newest version number, I need a functional tablet.
Unless they give us 4.0.4 really soon, which I doubt since none of the beta testers have said there was a change, expect the same 4.0.3 IML74K build with just tweaks ("fixes") until they decide to push 4.1 to us.

It may be simpler for Asus to work from a better base i.e. Jelly Bean, to deliver that outcome. Lets hope that given the Nexus 7 runs a Tegra 3 processor Transformer Prime owners won't be too far behind!!
I heard rumors that google is still not working on Android 5.0 'key Lime Pie', and they will also not present it on Google I/O this month.
Apparently they will release a newer version of a Jelly bean ROM, Android 4.3, apperently with codename 'Android 4.3 JWR23B'.
Rumors told me that Google already tested Android 4.3 on a galaxy nexus 7 and nexus 4.
What my question is:
The Samsung galaxy tab10.1 had a timid start with android 4.2, it was laggy and it didn't respond at times, but it turned out to be one of the fastest ROM ever on my galaxy tab10.1 after hard and long work ( i'm flashing pershoot's ROM's (CyanogenMod) now since 11 months), thanks to pershoot.
Will there also be any chance to run a newer android version on this tablet after Android 4.2?
since there were doubts that android 4.2 would ever work on this tablet and turned out to be this smooth, it's giving me alot hope, what do you think?

I heard rumours about the last android version for dual core processor device is 4.2.2 to maintain the quality of later version (4.3++). Can't recall where I read it but if this true then the GT10.1 will stop at Jelly Bean 4.2.2. but, anything is possible..
On my 2nd thougt,if the above is true, this might be the opportunity to the level 17 API's developers and below to strengthen their apps stability, performance and thus give maximum performance to the devices. This might be a good news too.
I think if google upgrades it to android 4.3, most likely there will be bug fixes, like the strange back button It's supposed to bring us to the previous screen until we get to the home screen, but at times, it'll take you to places in apps you've never been, skips screens you've been too, it basically works only half of the time. and if i take a look on my parents's ipad, and if i rotate the screen, the transition is extremely smooth.
If i rotate my galaxy tab or my asus transformer it's kind of... Choppy... If i search the internet, the browser can't follow the speed of your finger on any device i've been on yet, maybe a little bit more browser responsiveness would be great, i'm not saying it isn't smooth yet, but it could be better!
And maybe they will work on more battery life? And if they're already working on it, maybe they should work on a new way to stay connected with people, what i mean is, don't use a stupid samsung app or asus vibe or whatever manufacturers use to connect to a social website, but make it a built-in app?? Like ubuntu does or WP8.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is already out on the Galaxy Nexus, but other phone are still waiting for manufacturers to do the work and update their handsets to the newest version of Android. What’s worse is that some handset will never officially get updated to Jelly Bean.
If you want to change that, you should be on XDA Developers where all the development happens and now the Samsung Galaxy Ace and Gio, some of the most affordable low-end Androids, got the CyanogenMod 10 ports.
CyanogenMod 10 is the Jelly Bean based version of the custom ROM. If you want to flash it, just check out the links below where you’ll find all the detailed information you need.
Interestingly, the Ace and Gio were never included in Samsung’s plans for the update to even ICS as they run on a pretty dated ARMv6 processors. Now, a very important disclaimer is that those ports are not yet final - they are alpha versions that are still not ready for prime time. You can get on and help the developer and also get a taste of what’s to come with them though.
