Static in all audio? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I just recently received the white s3 for tmobile and I was wondering if anyone has this static noise in the music app, but I thought it was just my phone but it transfers into my head phones and makes the noise as well
Any fixes?

S3 for V here. Mine does the same thing, but the music app doesn't even have to be on. Ive already posted in the bugs thread about this and a few others say they haven't had any issues, so I feel its an isolated incident. I only get it when I plug in a TRS jack. When I plug in a TRRS jack, I hear no static. I'm going out on a limb here and going to guess that the sleeve could be bridging connections in the receptacle. But if that's the case, the hardware/drivers should be able to handle that as I haven't had any issue with my iphone and that was a TRRS receptacle, along with a host of many other phones.

I have the Verizon variant and I get this same static. For me it sounds like a crackling/popping sound. Having the screen on makes it worse. I even get it during turn by turn navigation and through my car's bluetooth audio.
Verizon and Samsung support have been worthless. There are no stores with replacement stock within 100 miles of me.

I have the same issue with my sprint gs3. I'm hoping it's just a software issue.

I had this issue for a minute on my Sprint S3, then I realized that I hadn't plugged the headphones in quite all the way. They looked like they were in, but there's a final little click. Solved my issue.

The issue we're talking about happens on the speaker phone, earphones and even audio through bluetooth

I got my replacement shipped to me in several days. If it were a software issue then there would've been more reports. Pretty sure it's a hardware issue. Replace it asap before your return period expires.

Well I followed your advise and unrooted the phone to get a replacement.they of course didn't have any in stock so it'll be there by Tuesday. The rep played music through a set of earphones he had and no further questions were asked. I just hope the replacement doesn't have a different issue like the ones I've read around here. Even my battery life has been spectacular.

I only have this happen to me when I'm charging the phone as well. Have you tried only having the audio cable plugged in?

I've tried everything I can think of. When it happens while the phone rings I guess there's noting else to do. I even rechecked after unrooting it,downloading the latest sprint update but it seems it's hardware related.
it's not only music playing apps but even others like tune in radio do it as well.

I just tried putting the music on the my external sd card and it doesn't do the popping there. when it reads it off the internal storage is when all the popping begins.

Headphone jack issue!

I was wandering if anyone else had this problem? Every time I plug in to the Headphone jack my SD card unmounts. Has anyone else seen this?

don't have that issue BUT annoying is that when u plug in headphones it DISABLES THE MICROPHONE!! arg. so no way to listen to music & then answer a phone call without unplugging yer phones. How stupid is this?? its like the designers never actually used the phone

I know right? Its a damn shame that the guys here will fix all the problems that HTC should have caught
As for the Microphone issue, I think that has to do with the actual software.
Ok, I figured out that the tip of my connector was bent and it was pushing against the SD card.

Mic not working
Guess I didn't know this was an issues since every phone I have ever owned (feature phones) with a headphone jack d/c the mic when you plug it in. I always just picked up a nice pair of headphones with a mic on them to answer calls.
Found that out the hard way too. Right in the middle of a busy street, on an important call. Can't wait for CM7 so I dont have to deal with a stupid feature like that...
Audio Jack has a loose connection
I found a different issue in that if you bump the headphone jack just right, it cuts out the audio altogether. I took my Thunderbolt to the store thinking I had a defective unit and I was able to duplicate with their floor models too. Sounds like a manufacturing defect. I tested several headsets that to eliminate that as the problem.

Can you reproduce the issue with the battery cover off? Wondering if maybe the headphones aren't seated right. Taking the cover off would give more room to make sure they are all the way in there. (That's the only way I could type that last sentance without it sounding pornographic)
Note: don't bump it too hard with the cover off. You may knock the battery out.
no i have not encountered this problem, and i use headphone jack everytime i go out
Yea that definitely is a defect! If you can't easily fix it without potentially causing damage, I would get a replacement
The Disabled Microphone issue is really annoying, I can't wait for a dev to fix it!
That's lame. Have you heard of anyone figuring out a workaround yet?
Anyone found or asked a ROM developer about the mic shutting down when a headset is connected?

Crackling audio

I have noticed that the audio crackles when using the stock music player as well as the google play. This happens both through the speaker and multiple headsets. It also occurs also whether playing from a file stored locally or when streaming. It is most noticable when listening to a talk show since there are pauses of sllence which make the crackling stand out. It is not near as noticable when using the poweramp app. It is not the same issue as mentioned in the "Official Sound Quality" topic in the International Galaxy S3 forum since this occurs whether the screen is on or off. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes. At the gym today, my audio crackled about 2 times (headphones). Very annoying but w/e
The Onex I had would do this at times as well, arrgh. Was hoping this would not be an issue with the S3. Is this an android thing ?

How?
I'm getting crackling sound from the internal speaker when I use Gallery to play a video.
Also getting crackling from my left front tweeter when I use bluetooth in my car. I don't get it when I use the 3.5mm audio jack though. Nor does it come from any other speakers in the car.
And getting cracling from internal speaker while using Jango.
Don't get it while using iHeart though.
I am having the exact same issue as mentioned in the OP. I posted a thread in Q&A and no one else mentioned having the same problem.
I haven't noticed any streaming over Bluetooth

I got mine today from AT&T.
When connected to car's stereo via bluetooth ... it crackles/cracks/pops/chips after every 5 - 10 seconds. I tried playing different audio files - same results. Play video clip - same results. Played youtube video - same results.
When I connected the phone via FM transmitter ... there was no cracking/popping in sound. I will test it again with a 3.5 mm auxiliary jack and update the post.
It looks like its a hardware issue ... however since these phone are not in the stores yet. Its hard to get a replacement handset right now.
Problem is so bad that its impossible to carry on listening to music or podcast ...
Uh oh.
I have a U.S. (Canadian, same thing) model SIII and I have a SQ problem. It only appears at very low volumes but my quieter music sounds like it's passed through a kazoo. This disappears when I turn up the volume. I don't think it's the "crackle" issue I've seen frequently described on other forums, because it occurs continuously when I output audio through the headphone jack, not only when the screen is off. This problem occurs across apps and file formats, including my flawless FLAC collection. I've played the same files back on an iPod touch (320 kbp mp3s) and the iPod has no problems. I'm really, really hoping this isn't a hardware issue, because I've already exchanged 2 S IIIs at the shop I bought it from due to screen issues and the manager's visibly pissed at me for cutting into his margins If it is though, looks like I'll have to face him again... He might even refuse to exchange it :/
Samples:
In the attached .zip, one .wav was recorded from a video played back using the stock video player on the SIII on the lowest volume setting (this problem persists on other player applications).
The other .wav was recorded from an iPod Touch playing back the same video on its stock player, also on a very low volume setting (much more clearly than the SIII).
As you can see (hear), it's terrible on the SIII... any idea what's going on? I think I have the same issue as enaybee. If any of you with SQ issues could check out the samples and see if that's also what you're experiencing it'd be great

I am having the same issues of cracking and popping when using my bluetooth on the preinstalled car system on an 07 gl 320 mercedes. it appears in the "bugs" post re Samsung GS3 about the popping and cracking.
It is horribly annoying and obnoxious. it's so loud at times I can't even hear the other person on the other line.
I'm taking mine back to the VZ corp store I bought it at and going to work with a tech there to see if it's just mine or if it is on a replacement phone as well.
I had an HTC One X that would do this when playing music from Spotify and using a Bluetooth headset. I have not had this with the S3. I imagine that this is a software issue, likely related to Android.
Same issue here
I have the same cracking / popping issue. I spent 1 1/2 hours in a Verizon store last night convincing them there was a problem. I paired my headphones with an in store display and the sound was fine. Had them listen to my Galaxy and they could hear the cracking. The connected one of their headphones to my phone and heard the cracking. Finally, they agreed there is a problem with the phone. Unfortunately, there (apparently) are no white 32gb available anywhere at this time, so I am waiting for a backorder.
Not sure what they were looking at, but they later mentioned (while searching for a replacement device) that they have had other reports of the same problem.
UPDATE: cracking in Bluetooth/not with plug in speaker/headset/installed speaker
Last night contacted Samsung on Chat Tech Support. Their response was they haven't gotten anything listed yet and suggested I call back if the problem persists when data is more prevalent??? Reviewed multiple posts today on different forums. I listened to headphones via the 3.5mm jack, listened to the installed speaker, and no popping/cracking noted. Called my Corp VZ store in Ocala, FL this am and advised of situation so they would hold a 16g white GSIII for me. Arrived at 8p this evening. Had salesperson sit in my vehicle while I made several calls.
The first couple calls while connected to bluetooth there was scant noise. Then I received an incoming call that cracked/popped. The salesperson in his infinite wisdom advised me it sounded like the person was speaking too loud into their mic and that was causing feedback. (SERIOUSLY. I pay to be blonde! I'm a freaking techie! bygones..) Anyway, he said he would call level 2 tech support. After perusing my phone and it's setting I'm sure in an attempt to make sure I haven't rooted yet, which I hadn't, the Level 2 Tech support stated he didn't see any problems like this listed in the database and it's probably a lack of compatibility with the Bluetooth 4.0 and my system, so they would not replace the phone, as it's not their issue.
As my blood started to boil, again them assuming that because I'm female, I don't understand, Uggh!, I tried to control my temper and got stern advising them i've had the px for less than 48 hours. I drive 500 miles a week. I must have hands free communication and this SUCKS! I stated of course your system doesn't show the defect yet. The dang phone just came out. The salesperson witnessed the problem and blew me off. I advised him that I found the posts here on XDA and his response was "People on those forums lie about the problems they're having."
REALLY?????? Now the temper flared. I said "I may be female with blonde hair but have an advanced medical degree, am obviously more tech smart than he is, and advised him he was an idiot. (yes, I know that doesn't get anything accomplished, but it at least made me feel better.) His response was "what would you like me to do. If I give you another phone it may have the same problem." And my reply, "and IT MIGHT NOT!" Again I referred to the other listed people who have a similar issue that wasn't present on other devices. He blew me off. I told him I would have a new phone in my hands by morning and left the store.
On my long drive home I called VZ tech support on my phone, explained the above, and she advised me I had to call back on a different phone. I advised her I've already called Samsung, the factory reset didn't fix it, I'm NOT reseting it again, I unpaired and re-paired the bluetooth, the store person went through the settings already and was blown off by tech support, and that I WANTED to use the phone so she could hear the interference. She put me through to Level 2 Tech Support after she heard the interference as well. Had to explain AGAIN. Well, the tech noted my account and I should be getting a new px in the am at a different corporate store under the 14 day warranty for a new phone. Will keep you posted on the results.
Other than this bluetooth issue, the phone is awesome. Have not had any other glitches. But if this persists, it's a bust. Have to have bluetooth that works!

Discovery about headphone noise (humming)

I looked and didn't see anything about this, so forgive me if it's been posted already.
I noticed, like a lot of people, the annoying humming that this phone makes when you listen to music (for me most apparent when I have it hooked to my car stereo) but I was listening to music with a portable speaker, speaker connected to my LAPTOP (not the phone), and I moved the phone close to where the 3.5mm plugs into the laptop, and I heard the same buzzing sound. 0__0 ... So I think the humming is coming from some one of the wireless radios.. not sure which one, but after a few seconds, it wouldn't hum anymore, which means the radio must have shut off...
Again, forgive me if this is already known information, but if it isn't ... this may help some people, maybe the GPS radio causes the noise?? or Wifi??

Yep found that out on day one. Switch to wi-fi or turn off data and all will be well. If you're streaming in the car, I barely notice it with the music turned up. Droid Charge didn't have this problem, but it also didn't have an amplified headphone jack. I had to turn my car radio up way higher than my iPod with that phone, not the case with this one.

You've got to be kidding me... That is nuts, and that buzzing drives me absolutely CRAZY! I noticed something that with my Beats over ears, every time I touched the screen the buzzing would start, couple seconds it would go away. I put the phone into airplane mode and presto, all the buzzing was gone! Verizon HAS to do something about this, it makes the headphone jack virtual unusable!
HTC Is Aware Now
So after getting my second device from Verizon with the same issue I was finally transfered over to HTC. After an hour conversation and then some back and forth emails HTC is now aware! Very exciting as this issue has been bugging me for a while. They have now replicated the issue and are going to begin work on a fix!

Thank you for the information. Unfortunately, it did not take me long to test the issue and replicate it with my personal device. Anyone try a Ferrite Split Core? Not sure if it would help but if you have one sitting around it would be worth a try. Just wrap your audio cable through it a few times, worth a shot. Maybe two one at each end. See attached image.
I've run into this myself, however.....the humming does go away on it's own after a few seconds even when I'm downloading a large file over LTE....that tells me that while it still may be a hardware issue, they likely have filters in place that the software isn't triggering in a timely fashion. So it's possible it could be fixed in software.

If you're using expensive IEMs, why are you driving them with the built-in amp? You need to use an external amp and use a player like Neutron MP to line-out to it.

The E17 is a great USB DAC, if that's too expensive, the E7 is a good alternative. You can use an OTG cable and do USB audio, or line out using Neutron. :good:

It's not the LTE radio causing it. LTE does not use TDMA (time division multiple access, as opposed to CDMA) as in traditional GSM. It uses a different form of signal transmission called OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple access) which is continuous transmission like CDMA, which does not make speakers buzz. Most of the cause of this is the circuit being closely tuned with the flow of power in and out of the battery. If you plug in the phone to charge while using the headphone jack, it should be even louder and more apparent.
A quick fix for this is to put whatever you're using through a noise filter. This one is only $10 on amazon and is better for those listening through speakers rather than headphones. As for me, I don't really hear it much on my phone unless its plugged in, in which this little filter fixes the issue.

Coincidence? I've never gotten any buzz, and I'm always on 4G.
Not happening here on stock. I use headset for about 3 hours a day. Best sound yet and i'm a picky listener with only high quality headsets. My Bose OE2 would have picked up any noise.
a little off topic... I havent tried to replicate this on my DNA yet but my iPhone 5 and everyone iPhone I've had since '07 (I've had them all) have this buzzing noise in the car when I have them playing through the aux jack AND charging simultaneously. when I unplug the charger, noise is gone...

Headphone jack problem?

When I use the headphones that came with the S4 everything sounds fine but when I plug the phone into my car to hear over the cars audio system it makes a crackling/popping sound.
Is there a know issue with the headphone jack?
Yes before I got my VZW S4 on launch day i read that some phones were not nice with some sets of headphones. I believe i read it somewhere like gottabemobile.com or androidpolice.com. One guy actually did a signal analysis and isolated it out and found the frequency of the crackling.
That was why i didn't pre-order my phone but went to a corporate store and checked them out before i bought one.
I did a search and found what might be a fix but i'd still have it exchanged.

Well this made me sad today. I thought maybe a firmware update would help, but I have the latest and still using auxiliary as an audio out is no longer an option for me as it still sounds like I'm streaming a 96kbps song over Real Audio. Haha. It's horrible. Luckily I have the GoGroove BlueGate that makes anything with an aux in BT compatible. BT audio sounds fine. It just kind of upsets me that something like this was able to slip by QC for such a major release.
the headphones came with s4 has it own length at jack white divider line replace the car jack with that type may be it would work

Static when connected to Aux input in car and charger plugged in

I just got my S4 this week. I recently changed phones from the Note 2.
When I play music via the 3.5mm cable to my car's Aux input I hear static only when no sound is playing. Also, the quality of the music isn't as good as the Note 2. I would suspect that the clarity, range and overall quality of the S4 would at least be at par to my Note 2.
Just this morning I unplugged the usb charger and the static stopped. I have not been able to replicate this issue with headphones or other chargers. Normally, I would suspect that one of the cables are going bad. However, the same cables work fine with the Note 2.
There appears to be the metal of the charger is hitting the metal bezel/border around the phone that the 3.5mm input is resting on causing (grounding?) the static. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a known issue? I want to make sure it's not a defect on the phone.
If anybody have any solutions or recommendations on better cables please let me know.
Thanks

I just got my S4 this week. I recently changed phones from the Note 2.
When I play music via the 3.5mm cable to my car's Aux input I hear static only when no sound is playing. Also, the quality of the music isn't as good as the Note 2. I would suspect that the clarity, range and overall quality of the S4 would at least be at par to my Note 2.

The metal-looking bezel around the phone is just painted plastic. I can't say I've experienced this issue, and it's strange that it doesn't happen with other headphones.

I used a different charger when I tested the headphones. I'm going to try headphones with the same charger tonight. Is it possible there's an internal short or ground causing this? I read other people having static over the audio but I only hear the static when no music is playing that includes changing songs.
There is a known issue with SOME GS4's and their headphone jacks causing static or crackling noise during playback. It is a random issue and seems to be an issue with certain types of headphones or whatever is plugged into the jack. For example, you can use the headphones the phone came with and they are fine but some aftermarket headphones have the issue. This is 1 reason why i didn't preorder my phone online but went into a corporate store and had them test it before they set it up.
My advice, is since you're inside your 14 day return policy i would return for a new unit.

I will do. Thank you for the advice.
Could be a grounding issue between the audio in car and your charger. May need to isolate the ground....

The only thing is that any other device I tried including my old note 2 and ky tablet works without issue with the same cables. And I just noticed now that the syayic is louder wyen changing songs then when 5he music is stopped or paused.

Same issue here
I'm having the same issue with static/buzz between tracks with the charger plugged in. I believe there is a grounding issue in the phone itself. I've had several other devices plugged into the same cable with no issues. It's really annoying. What's odd is that there's zero buzz when a track is playing. It only happens when the tracks change.
Update: I just checked it with a coworker's S4 and the same issue is happening. Also, if an audio application is not running the buzz is heard when the charger is plugged in. As soon as an audio application runs the buzz goes away until the songs/tracks change and then it's only making noise between the tracks. Seems like something in the audio section disconnects when there's no audio. Definitely a Samsung issue.
Im also having the exactvsame issue that Icecreaman is describing to the T. So my big question of the evening, is it all VZW S4s or are there a bad batch? Because if its a bad batch I can return my still for a new one...
Thoughts.

Ok so it gets more interesting. I grabbed my wifes S4 which I got from a differnt store 3 weeks apart from my as well as the fact that mine is the white variant hers is black.
Now what I have realized at least in my vehicle is that it only does it for her phone when I have the aux cable plugged in AND micro USB is plugged in and charging. If I remove the micro USB the cutting/popping is none existant. I will try it with mine tomorrow. I suggest you guys try the same thing and post results.

I do have the exact same results with both phones tested when micro USB and Aux Cable plugged in. Sorry for not making that more clear in my last post.
99% sure this is a grounding issue in your car, and not a problem with the phone. My old Droid Bionic, Droid RAZR, and now my Galaxy S4 all do the same. It's a grounding issue, not the phone. Do I know how to fix it? Unfortunately no.

Definitely not a grounding issue with car. Once an audio app turns on there is no noise, even when music is paused it's dead silent. I also was able to reproduce the issue with a set of computer speakers in the house to eliminate the possibility of the car causing the issue. It is a ground problem but it's in the phone. Samsung is disconnecting something in the headphone section of the phone when there's no audio apps running. If I plug in my micro USB and AUX jack in the car with all audio apps closed I get a constant buzz. It sounds similar to the sound you get when you touch an audio cable that's plugged into an amp. I've tested three phones now all with the same problem in different cars.

Wow, so I'm definitely am not alone. It's exactly as everyone describes it. I also tried using the same micro usb charger and a headset instead of my aux cable and no issue. However, I just bought this off Amazon which eliminated the issue with my current phone. :
Kensington Noise Reducing Car Audio AUX Cable for MP3 or SmartPhone, including iPhone 4S (I can't post links but that's the title on Amazon)
I'm also Verizon also sent me a new phone to exchange my current but it sounds like the new phone will still have the same issue with my old cable. I'm debating on whether to just send the new one back or not since i just burned one of my three screen protectors.
But I can defintely confirm that if it's not a defect and an actual flaw in the phone then those headsets eliminates the issue.

Seems like its a wider-spread issue and no you aren't alone. I also have an issue with the volume dramatically increasing and decreasing while plugged into my AUX in my Tahoe. I was poking around the other S4 forums for the ATT, TMo and Sprint variants and its apparent there too. However the consensus is that issue is related to The Google Play Music app and more specifically the EQ.
I have had 'noise' on my AUX line in my truck before and it would be expected without a ground isolator however it seems worse with my S4.
So it seems that common wisdom here would say that a new replacement phone would not do any good?
-Lil'
I had the same issue in my truck with the s3. I think it was a ground issue.
There was improvement with the replacement device bu5 the issue wad still present. But the Kensington wire does eliminate the noise so it's definitely worth checking out.
