wifi tether and CM7.2 problems - Motorola Droid X2

I have an issue with I try to use any tethering other than PDANet with my Droid x2. I actually had this issue when it was stock, and thought maybe they had some safety built into the stock ROM. When I switch on wifi or wired tether, as soon as I start using a bunch of data, (ie 60 k/s sustained for a half minute or so) my 3G magically goes away, and stays that way until my connection is idle again. If I go through this cycle a bunch of times, eventually it'll become stable for the better part of an hour before going through the same issue. Now, as far as I can tell, this has something to do with the way Verizon monitors tether usage, but I'm on CM7.2, so wouldn't that sort of 'safety' be gone by now?
When I use PDANet, I can use it as much as I like without even a hiccup, so I know it isn't my connection. Any suggestions as to the cause, and how I can go about correcting it? Thanks!

Strange problem and sorry I'm drawing a blank... although i do have an image of an old country doctor smacking you up side the head with a rubber chicken saying "well use PDAnet"!! (For you youngsters that a Hee Haw reference)...

It's hard to use PDANet with Linux. I like being able to use this with my laptop.

Never used tethering with Linux, almost sounds like the problem might be on the computer side as I've never had problems using it with Windows.
You might do better asking for advice concerning the best way to tether with the particular version of Linux your using.

It's not the computer, because it works fine with every other phone. Also, when I use the built in tether with my desktop, it does the same thing. When I use PDANet, it's fine.

[Q] Nat Issue with all Kernels Including OTA

im having a issue with NAT on all kernels, I just came from the D1 to the TB. I use my tethering mainly for xbox, and for some reason the Nat config is diffrent on TBs kernels , On the D1 with just about any custom kernel i ended up with moderate, im getting the same thing with even the OTA kernel on my TB only diffrence is for some reason i cant talk or join with anyone on xbox live. i can play online solo with people in game just not in a party or anything. Before it only affected me with other people with a fully closed nat, now on TB its everyone reguardless of NAT. I was wondering if maybe because the OTA kernel came Pre enabled if theres something being missed, or jus not looked at because it worked out of box? Any ideas would be welcome.
I have no idea where you could find those type of settings, if they are even available... Sorry man. I haven't tried on my Thunderbolt, but never had an issue on my dInc...
I would also be interested in a solution, ps3 is the same way, works direct but not in a group

There wont be settings in the phone for it, Its a Dev thing. Somethings changed in the Kernel its self. Just to make sure im not crazy i fired up my old D1, and it works like a charm. Its something in the kernel. Need Dev input i think.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Tethering, even if you pay for it, to a video-game console is frowned upon by the majority of people in the Android community.

Not when you have Mediacom... Internet is always out. I don't like doing it but it gets annoying.

Its not about tethering a box or whatever u want for that matter. Its about getting as close to a true isp as possible. Voip uses it for multi voip connections more so if the host is not wide open nat. So theres a nat issue....

Verizon has NAT at the tower level, not at the phone, which is why you cant go and run a server on your LTE connection. 100s of people probably share the same IP that you have on your phone. There's no way in the age of 1 or less blocks of ipv4 left that you have 1:1 ipv4 address mapping on a phone (unless the phone specifically says it does like blackberries do).
Indeed but the d1 has a less restrictive nat then the thunderbolt. Meaning its something in the phone itself. Kernel i would guess...... Love all the comments but would be great to get some real info on the issue

Did you try in both 3g (rev A), 3g (ehrpd) and LTE? I'd say no way it will work in the last two for sure.
Could just be your droid x had its own IP always or it was just implemented recently that no one does, because I don't see how you can get around the fact you're behind NAT at the network level without doing something like VPN. The only way I have seen to do so is use 1x mode (roaming), but that's obviously not too great.
See its never been open nat. Im coming from a Moto Droid 1. There are 3 accounts in my house all using the old droid, im using the thunderbolt. The Droid 1's are not having any of the issues my ThunderBolt is having all using the same tower in the same house from the same network. I dont have LTE in my area yet so were still on the old verizon hardware. For the life of me i cant see how its not a issue in the phone itself. The droid 1's back in the day were having the same issue, untill Devs came out with the tether enabled kernels. Then the D1 was fine. So im thinking because the kernel for the thunderbolt came tether rdy out of the box that its never really been looked at (as a issue i mean)
maybe so. i dont have any previous android experience to make that judgement so i wouldnt know where to look what it would be exactly in the kernel source that would cause it without craploads of time wasted. Maybe try asking Adrynalyne or Imoseyon since both have prior android phone experience with kernels. adrynalyne goes on the irc channel so you could wait for him to talk on there.
the other thing you might try is seeing if it's an issue with cyanogenmod. I dont think it would be since the kernel for that is basically the same regardless of phone (other than drivers and such).
Good idea. Ill track down a dev. Not really an issue other then voice chat from a comp or box. Works just fine on Older models. Even got a old htc inc i tried and its still working fine too. Just odd

Verizon blocking tethering from rooted phones?

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/verizon_blocks_hotspot_tethering_for_jailbroken_de.php
Found that article. Is it true?
Anyone out there confirm they are blocked?
Still works for me on CM7.
i just used barnacle on miui and it worked flawlessly
Interesting. I wonder if it only blocks those using roms that are still based on Samsung's code.
Above examples use pure GB code and nothing from Samsung/Verizon.

I tethered from my device (ED05 installed) a few hours ago and it worked fine. However I was using a custom ED05 kernel, they might only be blocking it on Samsung's stock kernels.
There has always been tethering monitoring in the stock kernel. They might just now be doing something about it officially, but how many people are still running the factory software on here?
I think they attempt to block the tethering apps from the market and put things in the kernel

I wish it said what program she was using, along with how much data she was using.
Maybe it's just Verizon scare tactics. How is changing the ROM on the phone any different than erasing Windows 7 and installing Ubuntu on my computer. I think people will read that and think twice about "jailbreaking" their phones. I'd be surprised to see if anything changes on our phones though.
blocked
nope. no scare tactics here. im blocked. was using WIFI Tether... after 4 hours of reading up on this forum to tether my droid x2 to my Asus Prime, I finally got it working... Only to get pushed to that damn Verizon HotSpot Data Page minutes later. PISSED!
Verizon contract ends in a month. looks like im heading to sprint.
Well yeah your going to get the pushed "Verizon pay a monthly few page" if you try to use tethering through the built in hotspot. Download wifi tether or barnacle wifi tether and it should work on rooted devices. For USB tethering download easy tether and that does not require root. Yes I do believe this is a scare tactic unless for some reason you are using a total ungodly amount of data, then they will throttle your speed or possibly cut it off for the rest of that months Billing cycle. I have never ever had a problem and I don't feel threatened

[Q] Wireless Tether

I came to the rezound from the incredible and had wifi tether on it too. I realize it works in infrastructure on the incredible and the rezound only works in ad hoc. But on the rezound it doesn't seem to work as well as my incredible did. And was just wondering if it was normal for this to be happening. Do any of you guys get on your laptop and it seems to hang up a lot when you try to load web pages? Sometimes it works fine for me and sometimes it just seems like it takes forever to load a web page. Or do i have some settings wrong on something?
The Rezound works perfectly fine in infrastructure mode. Mine is.
Running wifi tether v3.1-beta11 . And it's just as fast as my phone or better when tethered.

Thanks for the help. i did some snooping around and found out that apparently you must be running a custom rom for that to work. I was on stock rooted. Now on RezRom 1.2 and everything seems golden.
I am running stock rom and wireless tether is working fine for me...
yeah I need help with thiis as well, I can't seem to get any tether app to go infrastructure, I keep getting errors when trying a secured netsor and my ps3 can never find it when I try to connect. on my laptop is shows up as a group? Ido what its called, the icon is 3 monitors linked together. you can email me or something? cuz I've been searching and trying for 3 days. e mail is [email protected]. thanks in advance!

See post #2. Personally I have no idea what ad hoc is or how to do it, I just turned on wireless tether and it just worked. It shows up on my laptop's available wireless networks and I connect to it.
EDIT: I just turned off wireless tether on my phone and then my laptop had a message that said "waiting for users to connect to your ad hoc network", so mine is ad hoc. Why is that a bad thing? I googled it but didn't get a grasp of it.

I have not been able to set up any security but you can see what's connected on the phone and allow or disallow them from what I can see. When I enable encryption and set a passphrase I can't seem to get to the point of entering it to connect and now I can't see the network showing up at all.

Ad-Hoc connections typically cannot act like a wireless access point (ie. multiple devices connecting to your phone effectively). Also, a lot of devices can't connect to ad-hoc networks. Laptops and computers are generally just fine with it.

On ineffibilis and I can tether both my laptop and my ipad at the same time...running wireless tether. Been doing this since that rom came out.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA App
Ad-hoc is a device to device network, aka connect your laptop to a friends laptop without having an access point. There are limitations to it, although the number of devices isn't one of them. Mainly I believe its security and speed (I think ad-hoc only connects at 11Mbps).
And like stated above, some devices can't connect, i.e. a PS3.

[Q]Bluetooth Tether?

Being a forum mod, it will be doubly bad if i have missed this somewhere, but i swear i searched, and found nothing much..
SO, I just joined the rezound family, up from my incredible.. my warrenty was void within hours..
One of the big things about my Inc was the ability to tether with WPA2 encryption.. handy in the work environment where they don't want too many open hotspots.
Now, i have already thrown a ICS rom on my Zound, since my current tab (Touchpad with CM9) does not support ad-hoc (from what i have found). But, i have always longed for BT tethering, since it is the least obvious (again, managed work enviroment).
For all the talk of wifi, has any real progress been made using BT? Given that ICS is still a but unstable, i wouldn't mind going back to GB, but would need other tethering instead of ad-hoc.
Any advice (aka.. your free chance to slap around a mod for not finding something obvious... )
I have searched far and wide for this with little success. I think the answer is to wait for cm9 to come to the rezound. But that is probably months away.. :/.

After more searching, i still come up short. We really cannot be the only two hat needs bt tether...
Doesn't open garden support BT tether?
I've looked as well and haven't found anything. I know PDA net has that option, but I've never gotten it to work properly.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
I use PDANet to Bluetooth tether my Mac. I'm on a mostly stock ROM. Works great but slowly (since my Mac is a 2004 model).
But I know it works on GB.
On ics, you should be able to select routing fix (and mms clamping?) And choose cdma GNex in google WiFi Tether app and use infrastructure.
I did it on Ineff ICS.
+1 to this problem. My phone's battery would make love to whoever figures this out.

[Q] CM7 Tethered?

So I see CM7 has been released for 2.3.4 on the DX2, but I see it says tethered. I know there is a difference between tethered and untethered. With the release for CM7 saying tethered, does that mean that everytime the phone dies or it is reset/shut-off you have to reapply the flash? Last time I tried to flash to this release I almost bricked my phone. Just afraid for it to happen again. Is this release worth the flash?
No, it's none of that stuff. It just means that it now supports tethering. It has a wireless hotspot app like verizons that you can use to tether your laptop, ipod, xoom or what have you to. It also supports usb tethering although I haven't tried it. The hotspot works great though.
In other words,,,, you can use your phone for internet access for whatever other devices you have if need be.
Ok so is this a stable ROM? Worth the flash?
Runs steady for me. Like all roms, it has it's own little quirks. Also, HDMI doesn't work on it. Don't know if that's a problem for you or not. Other than that, everything on it works great for me.
