Can I root my dinc4g - just got one yesterday - Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

So I finally got my dinc 4g!! I'm reading through the threads and it looks as though the htcdev site has been shut down.
I wanted to root mainly to remap my soft keys. So my question is, can I use the toolkit to root and apply the mod or am I screwed til further notice??

There is no other known way to root the device at this time. I'm sure something will come over the next weeks to months but at the moment you are "screwed".
To save yourself from being criticized post any questions in the Q and A forum and not in the dev forum.

Thanks!! Ill make sure to post there in the future.

I'm not 100% sure as I haven't looked, but I think you can temp-root the phone, do some search on that.

Ill look around. The main thing I wanna do I use the soft key remap to get rid of the black menu bar at the bottom!!!

I tried a couple different methods and found that none of them worked, mainly because I couldn't get any permissions on /data

root access wont remain after a reboot....you still can freeze/unfreeze with tibu

Gotcha, so a temp root is like a tethered jailbreak on the iphone. It'll work until I need to reboot. If I temp root I'm assuming I can flash a ROM and the softkey remap??

well you cant flash it because temproot doesnt allow you to install a recovery (afaik)
you could conceivably push the files to /system/ while temprooted and then reboot to apply the changes...but i dont know if the changes stick (never actually temp rooted, but there is some wackiness)...maybe someone else can chime in

From my experience:
Temp root simply adds the su command to the /system partition and allows user-apps to call on it when needed. If you can flash a recovery image via a su terminal, then it would allow a recovery, but I think that is where different phones vary in their temp root capabilities.
You can put files on the /system partition, but replacing the entire partition over ADB would be quite a stretch.

[Q] Update for HBoot 1.5 for Evo 3D?

I finally got the nerve to try and root my 3D today and all for nothing, with the latest update on the phone you cannot root with the current HBOOT 1.5 until a update is devoloped so how long will it be before we get an update for this?
I am very anxious to root so is there an update coming soon??? PLEASE!!!!!
Sorry guys, As I was writing this post it was aready being answered, well sort of..... I still would like to find out how long it will be before an update will be out.....
you can have root with hboot 1.5. Unlock using HTC's method and install CWM. From there you can install any rom with root access.
Sitting back and watching this one... btw this should be in general or q&a.

Why would you want a semi...cwm is a hit or miss. Plus only previous s-off phones it works on. The unlock is just the.bootloader

ok, i've successfully completed the htc unlock method. trying to install CWM, do you mean rom manager? that doesnt allow me to flash a recovery, comes up with some error.
i'm coming from samsung forums, so this(htc) is all new to me. can you point me in the right direction?
i'm just trying to figure out what you mean by "install cwm".

No, they didn't - they released something they call unlocked, but it can't be easily or reliably rooted. They are playing word games with us.
It's not easy but it can be done if pPl know what they are doing. And id they follow instruction. Mind you I did it without a guide on a Mac.

Because nobody around here actually reads the forum.

VirtualBox: For the few instances when you absolutely must have Windows to run a specific program. Much better than Parallels, imho. It runs flawlessly on my Mac, but in all honestly, I rarely have the need to boot Windows.

You're welcome. I had to ditch Parallels 5 when I upgraded to Lion because Nova Software refused to support it on 10.7. I did look into getting Fusion but I opted for Virtual Box since it was open source. Plus, like I said, I rarely have the need to boot Windows, so why pay for something I'll hardly use? I think the only time I've had to boot Windows is when I tried to theme a few apps for my phone. I've yet to find a decent Mac equivalent to zip7.

Assuming you just need ADB you can download an Ubuntu live CD and run it off that. Completely free and relatively easy.

It *should* be possible. The bootloader just locks the boot partition for one. Just not the system partition which is where ROM root access is. I'd have to go over it with a fine tooth comb to figure it out, just don't have the resources (or time) yet.
But again, I've been getting literally thrown around a gym and choked for the past week, so my brain isn't at a 100%. Anyone, feel free to chime in if I'm wrong.
I always thought you could get temp root, but it reverts back on a reboot.

As of now, no one has a method of rooting the phone without unlocking the bootloader through HTCDev.com. However, HTC no longer supports unlocking the bootloader on this phone, so everyone is SOL unless you unlocked before they dropped the support. We will have to wait until someone finds an exploit to add root functionality.

Anyone think the temp root method for the Rezound would work on the Dinc? Since they're almost the same phone....
If anyone wants to try the link is here http://www.jonamerica.com/technology/the-htc-rezound-root-guide/
Seriously doubt it would cause any errors or bricking or anything

there is no one click root anywhere for htc phones.. that was developed for motoroal and other model android phones.. to root htc you have to flash root from recovery.. for samsung some you can use the superoneclick or you can use odin (cuz superone click is built for fast automating odin)

question is your bootloader unlocked? because i just saw this video here on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L30M6j8Kt-8 that talks about this script... i'm not sure if you have the right one you might want to check with video.. just saw that, that script was from xboarder56 and i googled and found other instructions here http://theunlockr.com/2012/05/01/how-to-root-htc-amaze-4g/ but idk.. the normal way has always been the only way that has worked for me, but your welcomed to try

[Q] Possible to root Butterfly without losing all data?

First of all, I'm aware of [VERY EASY GUIDE]. Unfortunately it assumes unlocking bootloader using HTCDev.
And HTCDev unlock is wiping all the data.
I probably had to do it right away after I purchased my phone, but didn't. Now I have choice of losing all data (feel sick even thinking about it) or continue to suffer from limitations of unrooted phone.
But maybe there is way to root it without unlocking bootloader? I'm having fun with Androids for 3 years, so I could handle even "not-so-easy" guide, if I just could find it.
Just want to emphasize I have HTC Butterfly (chinese version), not DNA.
No, you have to unlock the bootloader to root it.
But you can backup your phone using adb then restore it after you root it.
But there's a butterfly section of xda, where this thread should be.

What happened is that I was complete idiot.
I tried it without typing additional command line parameters, just "adb backup". This one worked for me on CM10.1 so I thought on Sense it is disabled. But when I specified all parameters "adb backup -apk -all" it worked like a charm. Thanks again
Does it backup accounts, wifi passwords etc?

Tried for 4days. Read, reread and read again, still no root. Sent the phone back for a refund. Anybody get root on first try?
I got root on the first try, but I read my a## of like it was a final exam, lol. I noticed when I rooted the wind version, both the su and super user were pushed to the system but, the super user didn't have the right permission, I still had root, but not the governor (the governor is the superuser app, it makes everything ask for permission that require root privileges) was not enabled.
