I don't know about everyone else, but my note is nearly a PC replacement at this point for me. I don't find much use in my laptop or desktop for anything besides the occasional file management, & playing PC games (rarely even that anymore). The quality of games are starting to rival consoles as well, especially with me now playing most of my mobile games with console controllers.
For me, since I'm near sighted, having a high resolution screen that I can hold up close is for me a much better option then looking at a TV monitor or PC monitor across the room for media viewing.
PLUS having the option of being able to put the thing in my pocket just makes it much more practical then taking any other device with me, including a tablet.
If needed I even have a Bluetooth keyboard that works great with the note as well as a USB dongle to hookup a mouse or any external drives to my note. Office emulation on mobile is also good enough for my needs, and web browsing IMO is much easier and more fluid on my note then both PC's I own.
I personally have little to no use for any other devices besides my phone at this point, and there is certainly nothing that even comes close to being more practical for my lifestyle. I Currently don't subscribe to cable or landline internet services, so being able to wirelessly tether my data connection from my phone to my other devices adds a whole new layer of practicality to the equation.
So for me, my phone has almost replaced not only my PC , but my TV and internet services as well. Am I the only one with this opinion?

I also bought a bluetooth keyboard but I bought the 5.3 inch one and it is honestly, the most awkward decision I have ever made because it's too small for regular typing, but kinda too big for thumb typing although that's how I use it. It just makes me look like I'm a crazy gamer without a console.
I am also near sighted and had the HTC Inspire. We're like twins!

But as for completely replacing my desktop, that'll never happen for me, i spent a relative lot of money on my rig and i play games on it a lot. And while mobile games are getting better... there is no comparison to the power/speed/freedom to modify the game itself to a full desktop.
Plus I can't develop for the phone on the phone, need my pc for that

Nope, browser is not good enough and screen is too small. I am mid 50's with presbyopia, (old eyes) and without readers, cannot see even this big screen. Lack of support from our IT guys keep me from network access, so it is mostly still laptop, tablet, note, in that order. Network support for VPN keeps me from using it more than I would like to do.

lol I almost made the same mistake when I was shopping for a keyboard but soon realized how in-between those things are and opted for a full sizer that's still pretty portable.

Ha. I actually have a pretty serious gaming PC as well, however as my life becomes more and more on-the-go, it just isn't something I can spend much time with unfortunately. But since I'm still a gamer at heart, Google play games are certainly good enough when I'm mobile. I guess I too would probably never truly untie myself from my desktop, but my laptop on the other hand is completely useless to me now. Im even Considering selling it. That said, since I'm not really a coder or developer I could still in theory rid myself of the PC life and move completely mobile if necessary.

Really nowhere close. My phone is used as a planner, gps and for browsing the interwebz on the couch or at work. My pc is used for far too much for my phone to be even remotely capable of replacing it. The phone lacks processing power and real world application support.....plus i can't game on this thing.

Being a glasses dependant, young 40 something , I don't really see myself being able to narrow down my "computer" use solely to my phone (SGS2). The headaches would get to me. That being said it certainly has worked in a pinch & I'd feel lost without it. What has happened for me, though, in the last few months, is that we moved & I hurt my back. So, although I'm getting around o.k., the last thing I want to do during my down time is sit at a desk and this is where my Sam Tab 10.1 comes in! It has certainly replaced my computer, we didn't even set my PC back up after the move and it's a great computer my husband custom built for me (I have concerns about it seriptiously becoming an organ donor though!) One thing I've found that I do miss is having two+ windows open simultaneously, re-enter my SGS2! I've caught my husband rolling his eyes at times but with these 2 devices and my wireless printer, I'm set. Besides, I always have his PC to do any rooting, etc. And funny, It turns out his PC is always very well maintained, updated, latest everything, etc., go figure. AND I find free tech support is always close at hand whenever I use his PC, he's like a nervous new mom trying very hard to trust some loser babysitter with his child.

Dual 21" monitors with HDMI out to a 55" flatscreen, 3.2ghz quad core booting from a solid state drive and 16gigs of ram will never be replaced by a phone. It is my server, media center, communication hub, entertainment system and gaming rig all in one. I built it 6 years ago and it gets upgraded piece by piece. Only thing that's the same is the power supply, optical drives and motherboard which I will switch next year when more devices start using USB 3.0

Yes it does. Windows is just as bad. Android is too. That's why I'm waiting for B2G so that I could have some type of freedom in my OS. Android is just the lesser of the evils, for now. Macs are up there though. There's a reason why I own a Leemote laptop.

It is quite expensive to buy tab so if I decide to buy it I would like to get the best there is for my money.
So please share your experience, are you happy about it? Are there any major problems or bugs which you experienced? Is stock ROM good? Is it worth rooting? Basically whatever you think it's worth mentioning before I buy it.

I have had it for a week now and yes, I would say it was worth it. My only disappointment was that it does not have 2G / 3G voice capabilities. So I still have to carry a regular cell phone. But I have used the data side with Skype and it works great. I am hoping someone on XDA will hack the dialler functionality soon!
Value is a personal thing, very subjective.
The fact that you're asking about plugging in a keyboard indicates the desire to use the tablet for more than content consumption (videos, music, simple web browsing, reading). Not sure if this would be your first tablet but if you're looking to do any type of serious work on one tread carefully.
I got my Verizon LTE version fully understanding that I'd use it purely as a content consumption device. As such I'm VERY satisfied with it. I have no expectations to do any work related stuff on it other than read and respond to emails as the kind of work I do can't be done on a tablet anyhow.
Things I like to do with it include web browsing, watching downloaded TV shows (EZTV.it downloads), watching my bluray rips (be warned, tegra 2 chipset has specific limitations on codec/encoding settings so don't expect all types of 1080p encodes to work) reading news, browsing youtube and listening to streaming music.
My tablet came with Honeycomb 3.1 and that was LAGGY out of the box. Changing to ADW Launcher EX helped a lot but going to the leaked 3.2 ROM and putting on a different kernel is what helped the most so to answer your question - hated stock, rooted . . love being on non-stock rom and kernels.

Reason why I'm asking is that my laptop died yesterday and I need mobility of a laptop around the house but I don't like them, they are often poorly build, battery is not doing well and it is expensive to change and many more reasons. So I think it's time to end that nonsense and buy desktop PC for all kind of work and tablet for entertainment, Web surfing, Ebay communication. However I do like to write long emails and I'm not a fun of touchable keyboard, that is why I'm asking is it possible to plug regular one.
I never had tablet before, but I have now two Android devices and I am aware about some limitations, that is why I will by desktop PC as well. Waiting for more opinions. Thanks.

if you have patience to wait for transformer prime, don't go for this tab.
Two suggestions:
1) don't judge a tablet just by its specs and performance (it's like a car: just because it has a great engine doesn't mean it's fast, and certainly doesn't mean the seats are comfortable....). A light and easy to hold tablet is worth way more than a fast tablet with many ports and sharp edges (take my word, I tried 6 tablets before I found the GT10.1.). (Just to be clear, the GT10.1 is and will be the fastest tablet you can get until the Transformer Prime is launched).
2) don't judge a tablet by the stock ROM performance. If you know enough to find XDA, you should know that stock ROM and custom ROM are night and day... Keep this in mind for new tablets (it will be a few months before the Transformer Prime ROMs mature).

I own all three device types; four if you count my phone and my experience is this: my Tab used to be my wife's tab. Until she broke the screen, but she gave it to me because using it gave her RSI in her shoulder... the kind you need a fysiotherapist to look at and massage out. Holding it in front of you (lifting it) for extended periods time isn't recommended; you need to rest it on your lap or desk once in a while.
My experience with the tablet so far is that it's good for checking your email, your facebook/twitter/g+, browsing and the occasional game (Apparatus is really good on the Tab). However, if you're going to do more typing than 5 or 6 lines (long emails), you're better of with something that has a keyboard, like your desktop. Not only is it faster, it is way more comfortable. I wouldn't use my Tab to post this.
If you're planning on plugging a keyboard into a tablet, in other words: trying to make a tablet into a laptop, in my book you are doing it wrong and you would've been much better off buying a simple laptop. IMHO a tablet is not a laptop replacement. However, I do think it is possible using an OTG usb plug to use a keyboard with the Tab if you really want to; most likely you will need to run a custom 3.2 ROM. A mate of mine with a Transformer had loads of problems with the external keyboard on 3.1.
So what does it add to my desktop/laptop/phone I already have you may ask? Well, I'm gonna try and see if it works as an electronic notepad. My desk is littered with sheets of A5 paper filled with scribbles of meetings and ideas. I've ordered a Dagi P507 stylus (should be accurate with a capacitive screen) and I hope that it will work reasonably well in combination with handwriting recognition.
Also it just looks sexy on the coffee table.
So it's great for occasional use (look up imdb during a movie), but it's just not very good at "normal" productivity. IMHO it's a nice-to-have: I would not buy one if I didn't already have a laptop and a desktop.
If you use a custom Rom and one of the nice kernels this tablet performes well. There are some Keyboards availablefor example

Thanks for all the opinions guys, I will anyway w8 till price goes down, I am kind of sceptical about rooting and losing warranty on device worth 400 pounds. I already felt worried about this with my HTC sensation which was much cheaper. If the price will drop to about 300 our if I can get it fairly cheap second hand then I will buy it so I guess I will w8 with it.

Because of the constant bugs and my general disapproval of the device, I have decided I don't want it anymore; so I put it on Craigslist. One of the offers I got was for a cr-48 chromebook laptop with windows 7 installed and an upgraded graphics chip. The laptop is a 13" that looks like a matte black MacBook pro. I'd be using it primarily for school. I'm definitely interested, but I'm not sure what I should do.
Should I trade or not? I will most likely receive cash with it as well.
The cpu in that CR-48 is not powerful. Don't compare it to a Macbook, or even an Air. Its on par with netbooks, and netbooks can't do much else beyond running word processing
I had a CR-48. I hated it. Its uses were very limited, and the thing was SLOW. I didn't have Windows 7 installed on it, but I can't imagine Windows 7 being any better considering the low-end hardware inside. I would absolutely not do this.
I see. I kept thinking the same thing because of the tablet's quad core and how I'd be taking a performance hit by trading. I guess I'll just return it or whatever, lol

You can get a cr-48 for around $250 on ebay. Dude is trying to rip u off. It looks nice but the hardware is weak.

The form factor is really the only thing the cr-48 has going for it. Don't do it.
My CR-48 hasn't been turned on in 4 months. It was fun in the beginning but it cant even play 720p YouTube videos.

Because of the SSD, it runs surprisingly fast, even with the full OS loaded, and things like Aero on(the transparencies, and special effects in Windows 7). I can guarantee absolutely zero massive slowness, although I will safely say that it is no gaming PC, so don't expect it to play Crysis on it. Like I said before, I did upgrade the graphics card in it. That required that I remove the Globi 3000 chip, which was for the Verizon 3g data plan. That's because I had no use for the Verizon chip, and with the graphics card in, it does run much smoother than stock. The chip I used was the Broadcom BCM970012, if you wanted to look up more info on it. Yeah exactly, but this tablet can't do a lot of the things I do on Windows, and on top of that this tablet is buggy as hell right now. The 8MP camera is really the only thing keeping me from returning it, because I blog for youtube. I wanted to get a flip camera, but this seemed like a better investment.

I am debating on purchasing a tablet with a keyboard for school. Solely to use in class. I could use my smartphone while on the go, and my laptop for when I am in a dedicated studying area.

Tablets are great to have on the family room table to browse while you watch TV but pretty useless when it comes to getting real school work done. Take the laptop to class. The phone is just that, a phone. Occasionally it comes in handy as USB mass storage if you are short a thumb drive or to give your laptop a good internet connection if the schools wifi signal is weak.

Get the note 10.1 as your tablet. I experimented this last semester with using just my note for taking notes in class using smemo, and while the functionality was awesome being able to use Swype for text entry and the pen for equations and diagrams/sketches all in one document, the larger screen of the note 10.1 would be a great tool and make note taking flawless.

I got all three I barely touch my tablet anymore the note covers for the large gaming/browsing screen and the laptop covers everything else I need I don't think the tablets necessary but it's still nice to have

Ill tell you what. Ever since I got my note I barley use my laptop- even in school I use my note with my Bluetooth keypad and take notes via Google drive so i have it on cloud storage.
Sometimes I even write essays on it like a bau5 -
I only use my laptop now for like heavy Java and flash things that really don work on the note

Honestly...phablet (phone+tablet) and a laptop will be great for school. So go with a Galaxy Note or Note 2 and a laptop if you can afford it.

If you can only get one, get a laptop. No exceptions. A tablet is primarily a consumption device, a laptop lets you a lot more. Any school-specific software (office, photoshop, design apps, programming apps, compilers, web development, 3d modelling, etc...) is likely Windows (or Win/Mac/Linux) only. A tablet alone won't cut it.
Made my way through college (computer engineering) without a smartphone as well, had a laptop, desktop, tablet, and a mini-tablet (Android mp3 player) but just a basic prepaid phone. There's wireless everywhere on most college campuses, so you won't need a smartphone. Only bought my Note in May after graduation.
If you need high performance for school or gaming, I'd even recommend a nice custom desktop and a cheap netbook, you can always remote in to the desktop from the laptop.

If you need high performance for school or gaming, I'd even recommend a nice custom desktop and a cheap netbook, you can always remote in to the desktop from the laptop.

Side question. Do you think computer engineering major is suck, i do. I might not a smart student. However i just gained a lil knowledge from computer engineering major after got my BS(B****) degree. I wish i can go to Computer Science instead.

I guess it really depends on what you want to do. My first 2 degrees are in computer science. I have a friend who did computer engineering but we have totally different jobs. I run a training datacenter and he designs chips for Intel. I like my job better and he likes his better.

I was going to buy another tablet, like a prime with the keyboard dock, but when I saw that, I decided to wait. Our phones are powerhouses and that would be just freaking cool to have.
a lot of people here mentioned they don't use their tablets anymore and I'm one of them which is another reason why I haven't pulled the trigger on a prime. My Note covers almost everything I want to do on it. when at home I run my media center, RDP into my server for upgrades, drive my boxee box. Heck if I could find a universal IR controller that allowed me to do so via wifi I'd get rid of my universal remote. This phone is just sweet, it's big enough to play games on and small enough not to feel like a burden.
I own all three. Skip the tablet. Get a laptop and phablet.
You can choose according to your budget and needs.
1. Galaxy note 10.1 + desktop.
2. Note 2 + Surface pro.
3. Laptop + S3.
4. Note + (high end) desktop.

Yeah no worries!
I use the ps3 Bluetooth keypad. I'm sure there are better ones but its small- hooks onto things (like my steering wheel) and has a mouse function!
Its also like $20 on amazon and its a nice Sony product. Also the battery lasts like forever maybe 3 weeks idk maybe more I never actually drained it!

Computer engineering? I loved it! I love low-level software as well as digital electronics hardware, and CompE is basically a low-level CS and digital systems EE combination. Great for people like me who prefer discrete/binary math to complex, real-valued math that you face in upper-level CS.

Yep. I've actually been wondering whether I would be better off with a Nexus 7, but come to think of it since I carry a tablet as a replacement for a laptop I'll just use my phone when I need a smaller, lighter screen for in bed or whatever.

Yeah, know what you mean....I said I wasn't going to get a tablet (i'm in college don't want/need to spend the money) , howeverrr I would much rather carry this around instead of my 15" Gateway laptop. An OTG cable and flashdrive i'm set with storage + cloud/wifi. The only thing is I wish there would be a microUSB slot. :-I The price wants me to forget that though...haha

Depends largely on what you need laptop for when you go outside with it. If for browsing - tablets are even better than laptops at it. My laptop haven't left home since I bought my first tablet.
I wonder is this has a big update to Chrome, as rumoured?
@rookiegenius Personally, a tablet with a physical keyboard will do what I need for school.
I know what you mean..but the big thing is the battery would probably last 2-3 times what my laptop would.

Which is precisely what I use a laptop for... there isn't much else to do on a laptop, really, unless you want to pay an extortionate price for a laptop that doesn't suck. Fo a lot of things that can only be done right now on a laptop, it's just down to the company that makes the program not having clocked on to the huge mobile market... for example, the tablet version of Photoshop can do a surprising amount of stuff. You also have AIDE for app developing, and there's probably a HTML/PHP/etc editor out there on Play somewhere, I haven't really looked. The main apps that don't exist in any real substantial form are 3d modelling, video and music/sound editing software (anyone think Blender might hit ARM?). Otherwise you're all good to chuck out the laptop for a tablet. The convenience far outweighs the losses, IMO.
Oh, and there isn't a real decent office suite, but Google ought to be working on it with Drive.
I think something like the Surface Pro could easily replace a laptop in all categories. The only problem is the premium laptop price that comes with it. Google has really stepped it up with the new Nexus devices though.

Yeah, I mean a tablet can't replace a laptop until it has a fully functional fan, right?
But really, there is no room for mechanical parts in this digital era. The Pro sounds awkward in just about every way as far as portability goes. I don't really like the idea of an x86 tablet either, I think it's just Intel desperately clinging on to their business. All we need are ARM apps which do what we're missing from x86.

As a sys admin and developer I use Unix/Linux at work. Android is Linux and with some proper apps and utils installed, I have a full shell command line. I can connect to the corporate network and having shell I'm able to perform a lot of daily tasks with my GalaxyTab. No need to carry my notebook all the time. I'm going to order N10/32G (screen resolution plus performance) and hope, a docking station with a usable keyboard will be available soon

I doubt you will see something like that, except in the unlikely event that this thing takes off and gets loads of custom made accessories. You'll probably have to prop it against a wall and use Bluetooth.

Yes, bluetooth is an alternative. I use b-t keyboard with my current tablet, but don't like the battery drain. On-screen keyboard covers too much, so maybe with the higher resolution will be also acceptable.

I bought the Nexus 10 32GB out of curiosity last week, unlocked it and installed AOKP And all the goodies, but now I ended up not even thinking about using it for anything.
I have been using the HTC DNA since it was released, so I wasn't impressed by the N10's screen quality but not disappointed either. For the first few hours, I thought it would replace my laptop but I found myself using my ASUS Zenbook more so than N10 or the DNA. It's not because the N10 Doesn't have any practical utilities, but rather because my laptop do things far more better. Also, I just can't figure out how to comfortably hold the tablet. I thought of buying a case with a built-in stand, but I figured that it would be more convenient to just carry my laptop around instead.
So I'm about to sell my N10 but I just wanted to know how you guys utilize it before I do.

ehhh that's based on your usage really I like to go out and travel a lot, I'm an amateur photographer and i also do vfx stuffs so my laptop is pretty bulky. I only use it when I have to. Other than that when I go out for coffee or photo day I usually carry my nexus 10 and otg usb so I could view them in a bigger screen and sort out what I don't need or need. I also use my nex during relax for youtube, web surfing...etc, I also found myself using it for a recipe in cooking lol :silly: and yes it is not as practical as a laptop but I use it because of portability. But maybe it's not for you since you have the Zenbook :silly:
In addition to checking bookmarked news sites and social networks, I use the kindle and comixology apps (the latter mainly for marvel comics). For reading, I find the N10 superior to a laptop, and for web it's most of the time only slightly inferior (except when you're thrown into an ugly mobile site designed for 3" screens).
As for holding it, I slouch with my feet on the table and find I can keep the N10 at a usable angle and distance by dropping it in my lap. You may want to experiment with various couches/tables to find your ideal position
I'm a unix system administrator by profession, and I wouldn't ever consider using the N10 for work. I still have my cheapo laptop with linux for when I need to work from home.
I use my Nexus 10 for a variety of things, but mainly for reading, gaming, communication through apps like Hangouts, Voxer, and others, and study. I use EZPDF for annotation, best annotator out there. I also use it for music, since the speakers are quite loud. I also use it to time my efforts in volunteer work and record any necessary information (Ministry Assistant), and more. I've been trying to find more uses for it myself, I've only owned it for a week now. Best Android tablet I've used, for sure!

I use it with my hands and fingers.
I found that whenever I owned a laptop it would always sit in one place plugged in constantly. I now stick with a more powerful and more reliable desktop and have a Nexus for when I go out and about since they're much more portable.
I'm at university studying computer science. I use it all the time to type notes and read pdf versions of the numerous textbooks I need, so saves a huge amount of space and weight in my bag. I also use it a lot for the web, like if I'm on a site that requires a lot of reading, I'll often load it up on my tablet even if I'm on it on my laptop just to read it, just because the screen is so much easier to read off for me than my laptops. I use my n10 a lot and it's possibly the best thing I have bought in years, the 10 inch tab fits in my life perfectly. Although I am used to the 10 inch form factor as I had the galaxy tab 10.1 for a year before I got the nexus 10 and 7.
I also have the nexus 4 and the nexus 7. The nexus 7 I mainly use as a ebook reader, to play some games that are awkward on a 4.7 and 10.05 inch screen. Also use it a lot between the large amount of time it takes to charge my n10 up
I do the same as the person above. Also use it for reading books in general, my friends steal it to play games, and it's useful for long car rides even without internet.
Only problem is, is that I am too lazy to figure out how to compile my programming assignments on my Nexus 10 :/

Mighty Text. Its even notify you when someone is calling.
I generally don't really use mine at home unless my Desktop is in some kind of inoperable state (I used my N10 earlier to look up some info on a few BIOS settings for my Desktop). If I hear a notification go off, I usually go to my N4, or just minimize the game I'm playing on my Desktop and check Gmail.
I'd love to get some more use out of my N10, just need to figure out how... lol
I use it to play games. test out different ROMs. for skype/chatting when I am playing a game on my desktop. browsing the web. Sometimes watch youtube videos when I am away from desktop. listen to music.
Thanks for Mighty Text. Also what's the best combo to use it as a streaming player of my files on my computer? I wanna use it as a player and make my computer the "server".

I gave up my PC when I bought my nexus 10 so I use it for everything. Most days I just use it for the basic email, news (while on the toilet ), calendar, phone. I have a galaxy nexus but when I'm home I usually just use hangouts,Facebook, or Skype for calls off my tablet.
Its also my Netflix, hooked up to a TV. I went through 3 HDMI cables before I found one that worked on the nexus 10. For some reason it's picky.
Torrents, I have a wifi external HD I use to back things up.
I really want to add a Bluetooth speaker but I spent too much money on my Bose back when I had iPhone 3gs. Now I have to suffer with it.
GPS in the car, tethered to my phone (NFC tag). Gaming, though obviously its far from what my PC was.

Everything! Watching movies, reading emails, social media sites. For editing and sharing pictures and videos. It pretty much replaced a laptop and a desktop.
Web browsing when I'm outside in the backyard smoking or grilling, occasional games, netflix in bed, etc. I should probably use it more for how much I paid for it, but I love it as a tablet. After having a HORRIBLE experience with a TF300t it's perfect for me. No lags unless the app I'm using is laggy on all devices.
Mostly reading (news, books, comics, pocket) I also have a Zenbook but for reading the N10 is far better.
