I assume it is the same as an MHL connector. My questions are 1) Does it also charge your phone so it doesn't die if you're trying to watch a movie on an HDTV and 2) For the following product linked below, what is that small connector for that's next to the part that plugs into the back of your TV? I see that the other end of it plugs into your phone but can't figure out what the 3rd connector is for.

Wot ever you do don't buy one of them cables you've put a link to.I already brought the exact same of eBay.and trust me they don't work with Samsung galaxy s3.the only ones the work are genuine Samsung.because the genuine had 19 pins in cable and the one has like 16 or some thing like that.but trust me don't buy it

Even the one used for galaxy note doesnt work on sgs3 and when you buy one it should have this code.*(EPL-3FHUBEGSTD). Yeah ebay is scary

Hey guys I bought the authentic Samsung MHL (HDMI) adapter for my phone and when I plug it in nothing happens. When I connect it to the tv, nothing. I am on Unnamed 2.1

Let us know. I bought a menotek and it wont hold a connection. I had to get up 2x each movie just to push on the cable. I need to know if the Samsung does the same. If so, this whole feature is worthless.

You're not an idiot, you just didn't read the directions. I would have done the same thing if I hadn't already read through these threads, considering I never read the directions.

If i have a regulated power supply of 3.8 volts could this be done?
Have seen a similar thing done here to older phone just wondering if anybody did this before?
My reason for doing it is watching movies via host usb drains too much power and no way to charge and usb at same time.
Any thoughts on this being possible...???

Will do, I don't have another device to take the picture so I'll be using the mirror for my phone I found a old 3DS and remembered that it can record videos (sorry for the bad quality though and the mic is broke so there is no sound) and a different power source called the PocketJuice (http://tzumi.com/manuals/Solo2000mAh.pdf) which supplies a bit more power than a USB port, but just for portability sakes... I'll then edit my thread this post to tell you I've posted it... [right now the PocketJuice is charging/I decided to use clear tape to prove that my phone is connected by wires to prevent any more skeptical assumptions and the blue usb cord I'm using is from a Intel Play Digital Movie Creator that wasn't getting any use so I decided to take it's usb cord... You don't, it's automatic. If the dock isn't wired correctly then it will only charge.

I can't remember what phone/dock (might even be this phone) but I do remember reading that soldering a resistor between certain pins was enough to fool the phone into thinking it was an official dock.. Maybe you can search for that?

Are you talking about the USB cable? I lost my original S3 cable, hence I am using my old HTC Desire cable now. Didn't see any difference yet.

Apparently the Samsung one gave me troubles when charging. Like stopping at a certain percent and not charging anymore.. Tried another and that one has no problems.. How many pins does yours have?

Well, I guess, those extra pins won't make a difference, coz the slot in ur S3 may have the same no of contact points as there are pins in original S3 cable..!
I use a cheap no brand one when I'm at work and the Samsung cable at home. No differences at all.
Any suggestions for a desk dock? I'd really like usb 3 support since charging from usb it's so slow to begin with. I checked out Amazon, but everything looked really crappy. Sync would be nice, but I'm mainly using it for charging. I'm not using any cases or covers. Thanks all!

The OEM desk dock works great for me. It doesn't sync but has USB 3.0 connections and chatted very fast. It has a stereo speaker jack too.

I have one by victsing.com (I can't post links yet :/)
It's supposed to be able to connect via 3.0, but mine doesn't :/ that's not exactly the worst thing in the world for me. The dock itself is small and connects via a USB 3.0 cable (I just use my original samsung one) the dock also has a slot for an extra battery so you can charge a second battery while you're using your phone on it. It's a solid dock for $13ish.
