Does removing bloatware drain battery?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium

No.. helps battery life just freeze your the boat in your app settings.

disabling bloat helps keep less apps using cpu resources therefore less battery drain be careful on wat u freeze though

And why would you think it drains more battery?
The logic escapes me.

Well because i froze a ton of samsung and att bloatware and ive seen no improvement on my weak short battery life. I mean 4:30 hrs on battery with 3:01 screen on and im at 15%.... maybe the system is looking for the disabled apps??? I dont know..

3 hours of on screen is why your battery drained. Doubtful it's removing system apps.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

I've seen really varied battery life. The screen is the number one battery drain on our phones so I use my brightness as low as I can get away with. Monitor your battery life day to day and see if screen percent battery usage even when used for 3-5 hours should start to show closer to show 20-30% of your battery usage vs the likely 50% or higher you may be seeing now. I use a third party app to lower brightness even below our normal GS3 brightness when I know I'll be surfing or using the phone an extended period of time.
Common battery conservation knowledge consists of simple things like disabling GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth when possible. Limit or turn off sync when uneeded. Turn off led lit touch buttons if you get used to menu and back where they are. Turn off sprint network optimizer (sprint only) it seems to scan networks too often leading to too much battery discharge for me. Turn location services off if not used often certain ones not GPS effect battery too. Uninstall bloat which you did. Turn options in apps off not to sink.
Check battery usage during screen off and idle and make sure your phone is sleeping. If you have a sleep bug the phone is not shutting down cores and lowering speed while not used leading to multiple hours of battery life lost. I turn off vibrate and haptic feedback off except where I can. If your rooted take control of your cpu and when not needed clock it down yourself. If your browsing you may not need max frequency. 1ghz core or less is good to save power while just casually using the phone.
Just a rant on what I've had success with. No pic but I have had success getting 24 hours between charge with heavy use like 6+ hours screen on if I was really conservative. Most days of heavy use as long as I didn't use a giant overclock I get 9-10 hours between charge.

My favorite brightness widget for quick access and free on play store.
https:// play.google. com/store/apps/details?id=com.haxor
The great widget that's free on play store to adjust your brightness lower than current device brightness in a percent form. it can go 0-100% below your lowest brightness level or even below your highest brightness level if you prefer... as its based on your current set device brightness and is accomplished by using a screen overlay I believe. Adds a little lag when enabled but saves you the power when needed.

I might just check this out as well. The built in SGS3 brightness thingy is garbage so I have it set on max *I still get 4hours of screen on for max brightness tho haha*
Edit: Those apps are not what I thought they are.. I thought it was a different auto brightness thingy but its not that still useful I guess if you want to go crazy on battery.

Okay thank you kindly. I know much less than anyone here. I am new to this world and new to Android.
Those apps are not new brightness control as you have stated. ofirst one is a simple widget to change brightness from home screen so its just a shortcut. The second a screen overlay that doesn't get in the way of using apps and darkens the screen beyond minimum brightness that SG3 or any phone has. If a user does not need lower screen brightness than normal than the above apps are not going to be useful. Thank you for fixing links. I hope I can add to threads and around.
Like you I would love to see an app that creates a custom auto brIghtness function.

Thanks this looks great. that's what I was looking for in first place. Ill give it a try. That's definitely better yet.
A guy commented on app there and said useful info as follows which Ill try out myself just thought it was also interesting.
"On "automatic dynamic" mode- behaves buggy & erratic. USE: "automatic periodic" with updating at 5 sec intervals. Now works well. Set backlight zero to 10. Sample lux/% settings: 10/-55%, 100/10%, 500/35%, max/100%. Try it. Be nice if widget also showed Auto & %." -Heath
Edit: After trying the above app it easily replaces both apps I posted. Thanks jmorton10 for posting this great app.
Edit: After using all the apps. I found Lux can create lag in the touch interface and browsing etc just like the app"Screen Filter" I posted. On screen filter it causes lag when enabled and for some reason Lux also does this to my phone. Once I disabled and restarted the lag was gone again. I don't have to restart phone for Screen Filter just turning it off with a single button press fixes it. Lux has more features and actually makes a custom auto brightness profile. The free version is fairly limited but has enough to still make a fair brightness profile. Given the lag which is likely on just a few handsets is something most of us saving battery can deal with. Between all the apps I guess it depends on what you need. Lux is a top notch software but the free version is fairly limited vs the free brightness widget and screen filter but has no auto-brightness customization. The lag on Lux was not right away and was exactly like the lag in screen filter app so both must have issue in way the below normal brightness is overlayed over the screen. The paid version is likely very in depth.
Thanks for the app suggestion again.

Thanks for the input. I bought the onite 3800 mah extended battery, but im changing it for the qcell, or hyperion.

What brightness are you set at?

Hey xda,
I'm curious as to what you all use for your screen brightness settings. For the duration of my ownership of the fascinate, I've kept it at the lowest possible setting. I'm wondering if that's really doing that much for my battery life. I'm contemplating turning it to auto.
What do you guys think about screen brightness as it compares to battery life. Is the screen not lit with LEDs? If I'm not mistaken, a typical LED could run for like 40 years on a single AA battery.
I am on auto with GPS, Data, and sync on all time. I use it pretty heavily I would say. Nothing like hours at a time but 15 min here, 5 there, 10 there. I get about 16 - 18 hours out of my phone.

Yep...but i'll sacrifice in favor of beauty for a loss of thirty min. Of use
how long an LED runs on a AA depends, some might run a day (not 40 years), others less than an hour, and the most powerful ones need multiple D batteries just to turn on. these phones have a SAMOLED screen, broken down into: Super Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode. the important part here is the organic. instead of having a single, or a few LEDs behind or around the screen, the screen uses an organic (not organic like the meaningless buzzword, but no ****, it's organic cells) compound for each colour. these organic compounds produce light when electrically charged, and only when a colour is displayed. this gives you the possibility of a truly infinite contrast ratio, and brilliantly rich colours.
I leave mine on auto.
Was using the lowest setting, but I'm now using auto setting.
I normally have it at its lowest setting unless I'm outside. I used to have it on auto, but it didn't work exactly like I wanted. Now that the notification bar brightness feature was added with Froyo, I just use that to adjust the brightness without having to open up settings.
As long as you don't have the screen on for minutes at a time, the difference between automatic brightness and the lowest setting is minimal. I switch to automatic for days that I tend to be outside a lot, but I normally leave it on the lowest setting because I occasionally go on binges where I read the news when I'm bored. If I don't do that too much and don't have any phone calls that last over 15+ minutes then I get about 48 hours of battery life on JT's AOSP ROM.

Auto-brightness or manual

What gives you better battery life - keeping it on Auto or setting it manually to a lower setting?
People say auto brightness affects battery life because it utilizes CPU power. I call shenanigans on that though because it will use very little CPU power... I vote AUTO.. cause if your out in the sun and your settings are set to low... You are just going to tweak them to accommodate your needs.

Bet it does! just when it needs to brighten and dim, you never notice. I thought the same thing until I played with it for a while thenI noticed it working.
auto eats more power, but it does what it needs to.

It uses more power to make the display brighter. Think of it like those 3-way light bulbs. The lowest setting is like 25 watts, the middle 50 watts and the brightest is 100 watts.
There is a widget that lets you change it manually between 33, 67, and 100% brightness with the touch of the button. I have that on my 2nd screen (along with WiFi, GPS, etc) and keep it at 33% most of the day every day.
I use auto due to ease and I easily get through the day without charging. I do use manual if I am in a dark room b/c auto just doesn't seem to dim the screen enough.
I like the 3 setting Brightness widget also. I like to set it where I prefer, didn't really care for auto. Don't know about battery savings with either one.
Is this a stock brightness widget or do I have to get it in the market?
I keep mine low...
24 hours later... 55% battery.
I use battery level its a small widget to change every 25% its great my battery is amazing Im at 58% after 12 hrs using 25% the brightness level and of course WiFi always on and turn in mobile network when I leave the house which saves me SO much battery
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I always run mine at 100% brightness. I don't care about battery life. I prefer a bright screen.
Using a widget is probably no bad but I just auto , come on the phone was made with the sensor for it and it doesn't use much battery unless you have it a t 40% or lower all day long and struggle in the sun. I been using in auto since the iPhone I changed it for Android but i went back to auto cause it waste time just to change the setting everytime and annoying too

It's a stock HTC Widget, but they also put powerpanel in there. I just think the HTC widgets look nicer.
I wished the auto brightness function had user-defined options. I agree with it being way too bright at night.
I have been using the 3 setting brightness widget/button. Usually always leave it on medium till I'm at home with the wall charger then I use max brightness.

The best widget I've tried is Brightness Level made by Curvefish. You get easy access to preset levels, a slider to adjust brightness to any level, and enable or disable auto brightness.

it would be nice to find a widget that sets a daytime and nighttime level. i use tasker but i think it's just too big of a program for just this one little thing.
I shut off my auto brightness off yesterday after a few hours to see if it made a difference and set my level to 40%. I don't know if it was a fluke or not but after 13 hours when I plugged my phone back in to go to bed, I was at 63%.
That is a huge difference from what I have been seeing. I am going to see how it turns out today with the same setting but I must say it is looking pretty good so far. After 2.5 hours with some texts, a little web surfing, some theme changes and emails and I am at 93%.
I will post back my results later tonight. I am also using power control plus which has a brighness widget that you can set to a percentage for each hit. So in case I need fill brighness, one click and I am there. Another click I am back to 40%.

[Q] Display Killing Battery life :(

I'm not typically on the phone for long amounts of continuous time, just to text then i turn the screen off (the display is on auto brightness), and i'm getting half a days battery, and display is showing up as using about 70% of my battery at any given time. Any ideas on what could help or anything? Any help is much appreciated

Really you should try UV and UC and don't use force dual core if battery life is most important to you.
do you know what kernel would allow me to do this?
I take it most of you run manual w/ the screen fairly dim. I have had it on automatic. Im curious at about what percent auto hovers at. I know it auto adjusts but it probably has a general range it stays at - just curious if its like 35% or 55%.

I thought we've been over this. A high screen on percentage doesn't mean youre screen is killing the battery. It means its using the most amount of overall power. Technically that's a good thing. It means the rest of your phone (syncing, android processes, games, etc. Etc.) Aren't running wild in the background while the phone is asleep.
I'd be more worried if your display was only using 40% of the battery!
Turn auto brightness off.... It's too simple to pull down quick settings to change it that way,
Find an app to see running processes and services, might see stuff listed you have no idea was running.... Don't force close anything or mess with anything just use it as a refrence and find out if u really need the app or not, I use titanium back up to keep apps that I use just not to often and just restore them quickly use it and delete it.... I've seen a lot of games running in the background to give notifications and stuff, could be a lot of things... Best soulution to save batttery.... Buy a spare lol

what app can effectively track our battery drain in MA?
battery monitor widget is quite erratic, or is it really that high during idle

I had installed battery monitor and noticed, that when using phone in internet plussed in usb for charging - BM shows -430mA!!! Is usb port so weak? why phone consume so many power?

A suggestion to help with battery lifel, not cpu or radio related

Problem: For most of us, the big, bright screen eats up most of our battery power. One advantage of LED screens is the darker you make them (including using dark backgrounds), the fewer milliamps they use. So you could turn off auto-brightness and manually adjust the brightness to darker settings. Far from perfect since you must adjust it every time you go from a dark building to a bright sunny day - and vice-versa. A pain.
I recently installed Screen Filter by haxor industries. They only tout its ability to make the screen really dark for night-time viewing, with the side benefit that it will also save some battery. It works great for that. It will make the screen much, much darker than the lowest stock brightness level (even using apps which take it to its absolute lowest setting, which the stock brightness slider won't allow you to do). I've found going to 25% is perfect. It makes the screen a little gray when you go really dark but its a minor downside.
Solution: I realized it can also be set to only dim the screen a little, like 75%, or 80%. Not helpful at all in a dark room since it is still very bright. But I also noticed that it works along with the stock auto-brightness setting. So you can apply a fairly bright setting to Screen Filter and leave it on all the time, effectively lowering the stock auto-brightness level a few notches no matter what brightness it picks. You still get the benefit of auto, and you get to reduce the battery draw all the time, on the single-biggest battery user on the Note.
You can save multiple widgets on the home screen, each set to different levels, so you can turn off the 75% setting and apply a 25% setting at night with two button presses. Or turn it off with one button press in bright sun. And/or you can add it as an app shortcut which allows you to adjust the brightness from an "ongoing notification" in the notification bar.
I'm starting a test today, leaving mine on 75% all the time with auto-brightness on, and using 25% in dark situations which doesn't happen often. I expect this will produce a noticeable improvement in battery life.

I use screen filter and did not think to use it all the time with auto brightness, I will give it a go thanks for the idea.
Simply setting my brightness down to about 25% and leaving it I get 4.5~5 hours screen on time.
This is still working well for me, with a noticeable increase in battery time.
I've adjusted my lowest setting from 25% to 30%, too much of a gray cast to the screen at 25%. 30% is still pretty dark in a dark room. The 75% setting is good most of the time but I've found in full sun I usually have to turn it off.

Looking at the reviews for that app, someone said that Dimmer takes the screen down farther. I tried Dimmer before Screen Filter (only for night time viewing) and can confirm it will take the Note down to the lowest allowed 10/255 where the stock brightness only allows you to go to 30/255. However, Screen Filter will make the screen even darker than Dimmer. Something to consider - not bashing any of the above. Just sounds like Screen Filter is better both for daytime and nightime use.
I use screen filter to read at night. I'm not sure about the battery savings but with screen filter set at 12.5% the screen is unreadable unless you are in a dark room. In a dark room at that level white text is more gray than white as well.

I'm getting just shy of and over 4 hours screen time, depending how long I'm actually talking on the phone for that day. Not using this app btw, wifi at home, LTE everywhere else
Actually, for me, the screen is the number 3 item for killing battery, trumped by phone calls at number one. And I dont even spend that much time on phone calls, usually less than an hour per night (I wish I could find a solution for this besides not making / taking calls).
Under Settings->Display->Auto Adjust Screen Power, I have this DISABLED.
This helps significantly with the 'greys' on a dark screen (to the best of my limited comprehension, this is being called black crush?) AND virtually eliminates the 'banding' I was seeing initially. Strangely however, I had to disable this option and it took a day or two before the banding almost completely disappeared (I was seeing it ALOT on the Google Market initial grey screen before it loads in the ads).
I use Auto Brightness.
I also have Settings->Power Saving->All Options are DISABLED.
Anyway, you might try disabling the power saving and auto adjust screen power and see if that helps with black appearing grey using the app you are mentioning.
Use the 15 toggle mod to turn of all cellular data when you don't use your phone. You can still receive messages/calls but there is no reason to leave mobile data on while at work or you're not using the phone.
I usually leave school with around 90% battery left and I'm on school from 8-1. All because I leave data off while not in use.

There is much discussion on mastering your battery life in other sections, but concentraining on the app part alone, I would say Juice Defender has made a huge difference for me. I can get over 24 hours unplugged with about 3-5 hours of screen on time. The free Juice Defender helped a bit, but it wasn''t until I bought Juice Defender Ultimate that I saw large gains in life. I basically run my phone set up so that it kills all data connections and checks periodically (5 minute intervals) for notifications. Also, I have it set to learn so that when it knows I'm in an aread (based on tower ID, not GPS) that I do not use Wife, it will not bother looking for it. There are a ton of little settings that you can tweak to find just the right balance of saving verse use.
I've heard good things about Juice Defender as well.
Juice Defender:

Juice Defender Battery Plotter

I agree with both above about Juice Defender. I've had JD since my Vibrant days and found it to be very useful. May I also suggest a "all black" wallpaper and lowering your brightness to its lowest, this has also help me tons.
GL to you!
I too rep juice Defender like a champ. however............
if your getting only 4 hours battery lift, then their is probably a more serious issues. Im not sure wakelocks alone could even account for such poor battery longevity.
I would also recommend CPUspy from the market. This is a helpful tool to make sure your phone is going into deep sleep mode.

The key question is 4 hours of what? If I sat and played games for 4 hours, my phone would be dead or close to it depending on the game.
Lol. Not even! Modern combat can drain 10% of my batt in 20 mins

you need to install BetterBatteryStats to find out what's eating your battery. I use to use JuiceDefender & my biggest complaint was it was having a hard time reconnecting to wifi once the screen was on. I got fed up & went to GreenPower which has more options, IMHO.
I can get 15-16 hours of run time with 4 hours of screen time with the following. No Juice Defender.
Wifi off. Data and BT on. Screen Filter set to 75% most of the time, and 30% in pitch black. Screen Filter is a biggie - even Juice Defender can't cut the power useage of the single biggest drain on this phone... the screen.
Pls say where I can find screen filter setting. Thnx

Turning off auto brightness, and turning off screen auto rotate (and enabling it only when needed) help quite a lot!
Screen Filter is an application. Its primary use is to dim your screen far lower than the stock "low" setting. In many people's opinion the low setting is still way too bright in a dark room - Screen Filter lets you go as dim as you want, although too low and it makes everything look gray which is why I stick to 30%.
I noticed that it works along with the built-in auto brightness setting, and the app will allow you to dim the screen only a little if you want, so I started using it all the time on a 75% setting. The screen will still brigten and dim based on ambient light, but it will just be a little dimmer than stock. I've found a 75% setting along with auto brightness works well in all situations except full sun or a dark room, so I have two Widgets on my home screen - one for 75% (most of the time), one for 30% (for a dark room), and I'll turn it off for full sun. A lot less fiddling around than turning auto brightness off and manually adjusting the brightness all the time.
Since LED screens use less energy the darker they are, this effectively extends your battery run-time.
