Face Detection Sensor TOO sensitive, screen turns off when entering voice-mail pin - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Has anyone else noticed the face detection sensor/proximity sensor is way too sensitive?
As soon as I try to enter the pin code for the voicemail, the screen turns off.
I figured out the problem...my fingers approaching the phones screen/keypad trigger the face detection/proximity sensor to turn the screen off.
Has anyone else noticed this issue and is there a suitable fix? Do all Galaxy S3's have this problem?
Using Verizon SGS3
* proximity sensor

figured out entering pin code from a bottom approach doesn't trigger the sensors but that's annoying to approach with your fingers carefully from the bottom

Thanks for the clarification, but you know what I meant

I too have found this a huge annoyance and would love a fix

I wonder if a software fix would fix the problem or if the hardware sensor is just too sensitive.

Take it apart again and make sure it's installed correctly - that's obviously the problem here. Don't use a bandaid for this problem.
I didn't do it because I don't have tools. Also I have read on many forums that every who replaced the glass has the same problem and so far to achieve bacon disabling the proximity sensor is the way to go. I just need a walk through. Please help. Thanks!

There is a tiny rubber cover for the sensor that needs to be there for it to work properly. It is easy to lose when you replace the screen. This is the problem.

Mine had issues too, I moved the rubber peice around, it has to fit a certain way IMO and after a few trys I got it to work properly. However i did sever my on/off button ribbon. heh. Thank god clockwork recovery has a "feature" that it'll power on the phone when usb or AC is connected.
I really need to disable the sensor I don't want it on can any one help???

Have same problem... Can you tell me what i need to do ?
perhaps with UpSoundDown can fix it
what I did was install a new dialer that doesn't use the proximity sensor, which is basically any of them.
Proximity Sensor/Black Screen Fix!!!
Had the same problem after replacing also. Wasn't aware of rubber gasket to isolate signal between the two sensors. Just found out this was causing it from prior posts. Put a stip of black double sided foam tape between the two and found out that this was the problem by testing it with AndroSensor on the app market (free). When I put it in direct sun light it would turn back on. Gets really annoying when you can't hang up! Ribbon is on the opposite side so carefully pry appart without dissasembling again and put a strip while using the app and quickly test by putting your finger over it. Should say PROXIMITY (0.5mA) and stay constantly at (mine) 0.4 in, and change to 0.0 in when covered.

[Q] Proximity Sensor Issues

I am having some problems with the proximity Sensor of My Razr XT 910...
Sometimes the sensor just wont activate In call leaving my display powered On resulting in unwanted taps...This has happened 3 times since I got my phone a couple of weeks back...
Once the sensor knocks off the only way to get it to work again is by restarting the phone...
Anybody else faced this problem with the Razr..
No... If it was a hardware problem I would tend to to think it would do it every time.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
Have you tried cleaning the screen? Do you have a case on it that might be overshadowing the sensor? Bubble under the screen protector?

Yes, me. Exactly the same problem.
The problem disappears after rebooting...
Try turning off "in pocket detection"
It's in settings/screen/
This causes the sensor to be on 100% of the time, which might be a problem.
Otherwise, try updating if you haven't.

I believe the kinda/sorta "disclaimer" says that the proximity sensor works while the phone is in use (making a call).

I dont know if its just sprint phones but i assume most Note 3's will experience this issue. Something about the sensors not reading accurately. When i clean the sensor area with a cloth it works correctly. Hold the phone to my ear for a few minutes and it stops working. Clean the sensor area while still on the call and it will start back working... Issue probably started day one but just now realizing its a issue.
I had issues with this as well, the screen wouldn't turn off during a call, but turned out to be my screen protector. Pulled it off and works perfect now. Cheers!
Returned mine yesterday with a little headache as the rep i first spoke to decided to play with my phone vs doing a exchange. Manager sorted it all out and gave me a new phone. Also knox was tripped but i don't think they care. Dont think im going to root again till KNOX is out the way.
The sensor works like it is suppose to now. Funny story is that the sensor tried to act right at the sprint store. They have spot lights so the sensor was reading correctly. Explained to them i didnt walk around under spot lights they agreed and did the exchange.
So, I had this issue on my phone. Tried a bunch of stuff. The fix for me: can of compressed air targeted into the earpiece. Immediately solved and perfect again.

Worked for me for about 5 min on my old note 3. Also wiping the screen were the sensor is works. Of the screen cuts off and you wipe that area with a microfiber cloth the screen comes back on. Lol

Will report back if problems return. Hoping for the best I already tripped knox.
Hello everyone. I found the cause of this I hope. The main culprit is hardware. 1st I will tell solution for this problem. Just push hard the earpiece chrome grill inside with ur nails and the proximity sensor will work properly. problem is when we use phone and it gets heated at top then the glue which is holding earpiece grill will loose itself. its hardware problem and eventually many note3 users will face this. im using exynos note3.

You can also get a micro fiber cloth a wipe the sensor area. And the light will cut back on. Before returning the defective one i did that a few times. Never even touched the ear speaker grill.
So once you have the phone to your ear and it cuts off....Wipe just the sensor are with the micro fiber cloth. The screen will come back on. It will happen again the next time you use the phone but i am just saying its not the ear speaker.

Yea pretty much, I dont know if there's anything in the settings that needs to be adjusted but it is so frustrating now, please help me over come it. Cheers
I do not have your model phone. I have a note 3. Open the phone as to dial a number amd hit the menu button. I have an option to disable the proximity sensor so the screen would stay on.

Hey! Thanks for the help! When on dial and press on the menu button I don't have any settings coming up, I am assuming you mean a long press, but I don't get anything coming up. Cheers
Are you using a case? If so remove it and see if it helps. Also I read dirt in the proximity sensor could cause the problem. So blow air into the sensor to clean.

enter in service menu and recalibrate the proximity sensor , if doesn't work , it's a hardware fault

I have just registered with xda forum so I think my reply may be quite late, but it's never too late, so they say
Anyway, I had the same issue with Huawei P Smart that I've just bought a few hours ago. And I got it resolved with the app called "Smart Screen On Off (New)", by LuuTinh Developer. You will find it on google play.
As long as you test the proximity sensor physically and it works fine, this app should help you get your problem disappear altogether
Happy calls (with a turned-off screen obviously )

infrared sensor

Every time I lay it down, the sensor turns on. Is there anyway to disable this? Has this happened to anyone else?

Infrared turns devices on. There is no sensor. Are you referring to proximity?
