Hello all. I am wondering if anyone can help me. I recently installed a head unit ( pioneer avic z120 by) and i notice that one way to play music of the phone is to connect it via Bluetooth. I did that method and the sound quality sucks. Do anyone know of any other way to listen music from the phone and controlled it on the z120 instead of just changing it on the phone.
Also when the phone is on usb mode can I receive calls / text / charge......
i just use the usb and not bt for music. or now i use a 32gb flash drive with music. that why it also keep my songs in the same place.
thats on both z120s and a z90
bluetooth just sounds bad in general and will drain ur batt likeno other.
ur settings on ur deck might b off cause plugging ur phone in by usb should b fine

I have the exact same head unit in one of my cars. It has sounded awesome since the day I installed it. Worked perfect with my Evo 4G and now also with my 3D. Whether playing my MP3's, Pandora, YouTube, or whatever, it never decreases sound quality. That's really weird about yours. Radio, cd's, DVD's, and everything else sound good?
Oh, my iPod Touch sounds the same whether using my iPod cable I bought and ran from the back of the head unit or using bluetooth....

I just use the headphone jack. I only have that option right now, but it would still be my first choice. I've generally heard BT comes out rather unimpressive.
As for USB mode, it does allow you to place/receive calls and text messages. However, for obvious reasons, you wouldn't have access to the sdcard
i actually bought a FM transmitter from walmart for 12 bucks and it works VERY well great quality the only thing i have noticed is you must find the right station for your radio i use 107.7 and it works well for me but play around with them and see which one works best for you and don't turn your phone all the way up usually 2-4 clicks from max volume works well. hope that helps i know i love mine and ive been using it since my evo 4g and works equally well on my 3vo
My buddy use's an bluetooth speaker/fm transmitter, works well.
downside is..can't control the music from the radio/steering controls/remote etc
Check and see if there is a firmware update for your headunit
all else fails..put it closer to the radio Doh!

This is what you will have to do to get better quality. BT does degrade the quality of the sound produced by your phone.
I don't know where to post this but ill put it here. The problem we have with the headphones jack, where the sounds cuts in and out, its it a hardware problem or software. If it is software is there anyway DEVS can builds roms with something stopping this from happening. And please don't say headset blocker that **** don't work. I'm driving and my sounds just cut for no reason at all and I can't do anything about it. Unplug, turn the widget on/off, start music, stop diff app nothing. Is anyone having this problem as extreme as me? It sucks waiting for it to play when it wants

I know what you mean, I've had it pull up voice commands/call people/change songs if you even just slightly touch the aux cable. This only happens in my car, I haven't reproduced it with headphones. I'm on my 2nd 3vo for this and the problems are even worse on this phone. Sometimes it will scroll through all of my songs really fast or play a whole song in fast forward.
I think it might have to do with the cable since my headphones don't do it, or it could be a voltage change/sensor problem that detects when you pull the jack out it turns the music off, could just be going haywire.

I repair cell phones and its one of two things. One the copper contacts inside the jack are bent. If one does not make contact and will not play or only play on one channel thus one speaker works the other does not. The second is your headphones are damaged or of low quality. Try different pairs. My skull candy set sucks. I doubt software although if your modding or installing sketch apps its possible. One possible fix is to take a q tip and 90 % alcohol and clean the jack. If there is gunk on the contacts this will fix otherwise hardware. Hope this helps.

Install headset blocker from market.
It is a toggle widget you put on your homescreen
Enable it when you plug in a cable.
This should stop the random control issues.

When answering the phone while in the car dock the audio is routed to the internal speaker rather than through the audio output to the stereo. Anyone know how to fix this?

When you're on a call uncheck "speaker" and it should go thru the car speakers.

I have 2 dumb questions as I spent the better part of the day yesterday looking. 1. Does it charge the photon when It's in car dock?
2. You mean I can play the music thru the speakers? How? it dock wired to stero?

Well Bluetooth works while in the car dock but if you want to hear your music through the car speakers you have to turn Bluetooth off. Then when you get a call, you can't answer it without taking the phone out of the cradle because by the time you turn the Bluetooth back on and wait for it to connect, you've lost the call. Either I'm stupid and missing something or this is a really dumb design.

Exactly, I was almost better off using my old 3.5 to RF adapter because at least then I could answer the phone without having to pull it all apart.
Depends on the car stereo i guess.
I have my phone connected using the 3.5mm cable to my stereo and bluetooth is always connected. when i get a call (no matter what audio source i'm using ) the bluetooth with take over and let me answer through my stereo.

go to your blue tooth settings and select your car head unit there you can edit how the phone acts when its connected then go to your incall settings and adjust those according to how you want it to work,,, I play music thru the bluetooth and it stops playing when a call comes thru the call is routed to the speakers in the car via bluetooth and I use the mic on the phone to talk,, after the call is ended it returns to playing music like normal,, if you have any further problems pm me!

my bluetooth and car dock work flawlessly together. i didn't even have to change settings. the stereo i installed does have a mic so that may be different than what some people are experiencing. it actually syncs my phonebook and tells me who is calling while stopping my music and playing a nice little ringtone through my speakers. highly suggest to anyone who is on the road alot and prefers not getting a ticket.

car dock + bluetooth streaming music = no wires, no hassles.
I have a Pioneer AVH-P5200BT DVD Player. Best Buy is installing it at 10:00AM tomorrow. I will let you know how it works at 11:00AM!
Sometimes my wife's stereo will not pick up BT calls (calls go to the phone, just no audio). And sometimes we realize the car is on (being warmed up or whatever) and get a call, but no audio since its being directed though the car stereo. If this sounds like what you are experiencing all you have to do is hit the bluetooth button from the incall screen. This will route it back to the phone.
There should be no reason to turn on and off BT.
OK Boys and Girls. My Pioneer AVH-P5200BT DVD Player is killing me. (This is a LONG learning process................) TeleNav for Navagation works perfect. I can play music from my playlist and still get directions. Phone works perfect and I have not gotten any complaints. Dialing the phone is easy.
I only have 2 complaints. One (and this is minor) I cannot watch or play DVD unless parking brake light is on. (I dont watch movies anyway) I cannot watch Movies on Photon if it's in the dock. (again, dont want to watch anyway. I was just playing)
Second, I cannot get my music to play thru Bluetooth no matter how hard I try. I turn it off/on, I pair it again and again. Funny thing though. I have BT Headphones, When I pair or look at them, I see Headphones. When I look at my stereo, (or my ear piece), I see a ear piece?
I really, really, really love the setup though. Everything is within easy reach and the way it tilts to me is entertainment delight! (I will take picture later!)

OK all, Pictures of my DVD Player Open and Closed with Car Dock below. You don't see my Photon for obvious reasons (I needed it to take the picture) but you get the idea. Also, If you notice its slanted to the left. That is for my easy use, but I can slant it the other way if passenger wants to change playlist and/or navigate directions somewhere. David

I don't think that you all understand the original question. The problem is NOT with bluetooth. The problem is that the internal microphone is muted when you shut off the speakerphone function. Therefore when the audio is routed through the aux jack while in a call people can't hear you

I looked and didn't see anything about this, so forgive me if it's been posted already.
I noticed, like a lot of people, the annoying humming that this phone makes when you listen to music (for me most apparent when I have it hooked to my car stereo) but I was listening to music with a portable speaker, speaker connected to my LAPTOP (not the phone), and I moved the phone close to where the 3.5mm plugs into the laptop, and I heard the same buzzing sound. 0__0 ... So I think the humming is coming from some one of the wireless radios.. not sure which one, but after a few seconds, it wouldn't hum anymore, which means the radio must have shut off...
Again, forgive me if this is already known information, but if it isn't ... this may help some people, maybe the GPS radio causes the noise?? or Wifi??

yeah its the 4G LTE radio. it makes your speakers make weird crazy signal noises when it's too close, too, just like the old GSM flip phones did back in the day

Yep found that out on day one. Switch to wi-fi or turn off data and all will be well. If you're streaming in the car, I barely notice it with the music turned up. Droid Charge didn't have this problem, but it also didn't have an amplified headphone jack. I had to turn my car radio up way higher than my iPod with that phone, not the case with this one.

You've got to be kidding me... That is nuts, and that buzzing drives me absolutely CRAZY! I noticed something that with my Beats over ears, every time I touched the screen the buzzing would start, couple seconds it would go away. I put the phone into airplane mode and presto, all the buzzing was gone! Verizon HAS to do something about this, it makes the headphone jack virtual unusable!

So after getting my second device from Verizon with the same issue I was finally transfered over to HTC. After an hour conversation and then some back and forth emails HTC is now aware! Very exciting as this issue has been bugging me for a while. They have now replicated the issue and are going to begin work on a fix!

Anyone try a Ferrite Split Core? Not sure if it would help but if you have one sitting around it would be worth a try. Just wrap your audio cable through it a few times, worth a shot. Maybe two one at each end. See attached image.
I've run into this myself, however.....the humming does go away on it's own after a few seconds even when I'm downloading a large file over LTE....that tells me that while it still may be a hardware issue, they likely have filters in place that the software isn't triggering in a timely fashion. So it's possible it could be fixed in software.

Did you ever hear anything more on this? I listen using quite sensitive molded ear buds, and am considering returning the phone. What good is an expensive media device that sounds like a lumber mill?

If you're using expensive IEMs, why are you driving them with the built-in amp? You need to use an external amp and use a player like Neutron MP to line-out to it.

Thank you! I have considered picking up an external USB DAC. Can you confirm that the stock ROM will support it, and are there compatibility concerns with specific DACs? I'm not an audio engineer any more, so I can't justify spending much...

The E17 is a great USB DAC, if that's too expensive, the E7 is a good alternative. You can use an OTG cable and do USB audio, or line out using Neutron. :good:

I turn off sync when I listen to music and it does the trick. But I also keep sync turned off when I'm not on WiFi so its not really a big deal.

It's not the LTE radio causing it. LTE does not use TDMA (time division multiple access, as opposed to CDMA) as in traditional GSM. It uses a different form of signal transmission called OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple access) which is continuous transmission like CDMA, which does not make speakers buzz. Most of the cause of this is the circuit being closely tuned with the flow of power in and out of the battery. If you plug in the phone to charge while using the headphone jack, it should be even louder and more apparent.
A quick fix for this is to put whatever you're using through a noise filter. This one is only $10 on amazon and is better for those listening through speakers rather than headphones. As for me, I don't really hear it much on my phone unless its plugged in, in which this little filter fixes the issue.

Really, then how come whenever I switch to 4g i get buzz, but while on 3g or WiFi it doesn't buzz. And on top of that HTC has said its the 4g antenna causing it.

Coincidence? I've never gotten any buzz, and I'm always on 4G.
Not happening here on stock. I use headset for about 3 hours a day. Best sound yet and i'm a picky listener with only high quality headsets. My Bose OE2 would have picked up any noise.
a little off topic... I havent tried to replicate this on my DNA yet but my iPhone 5 and everyone iPhone I've had since '07 (I've had them all) have this buzzing noise in the car when I have them playing through the aux jack AND charging simultaneously. when I unplug the charger, noise is gone...

Or is the Bluetooth FM Transmitter still the way to go? Is there one anyone can recommend? I have the old fashioned Monster wired cable, but it only has 3 channel options, and we often can't find a clear channel when we travel.
I assume you don't have a line in port on your head unit.
If all you have is am/fm radio and a cd slot then an FM transmitter is the only thing you can do.
I hope to not hijack this but when I plug mine into my aux jack, it plays fine. But holy hell, when I plug the power into it, there is a good awful noise until the audio actually starts playing. Just having everything plugged in without paying anything is too loud to stand. I'd there any thing that can be fine to stop this?

Get an A2DP radio player and you are set to go.
i use bluetooth, but audio stream has a bit delay tho, tried watching a hockey game live to confirm that, note 2 has no problem dunno y

If you're driving a Toyota or lexus, you can get a plug and play adapter like I have on mine. It's a Bluetooth receiver, look for the bt-35toy on Amazon. And by plug and play I mean you have to plug it into the back of the in dash unit. I did it this way because I wanted to keep the look of the original in dash unit and get Bluetooth support.

I like that that one can search for the best available FM channel, but in general I find the FM transmitters to be a last resort.
I am in an area with lots of radio stations (Atlanta) and for the last 28 years I've had commutes of 40-55 miles, and family scattered widely. When I used these devices I never went over 20 minutes without having to stop listening and find a new frequency due to having so many radio stations in the area. I also have been in traffic and had horrible interference from other electronic devices, possibly radios in nearby vehicles.
If your factory radio doesn't have a Bluetooth receiver the next best choice IMHO is a cable or Bluetooth receiver plugged into an auxiliary input jack. Many factory radios don't have those of course, so you should find a forum for owners of your car and get suggestions about affordable ways to add one. You may find instructions for a DIY method to add one that doesn't cost $125 or more. If you have the money those expensive ones will sound good, but after buying a $700 phone, $20 to $45 case, $8 to $35 tempered glass screen protector, $10 Qi wireless receiver, $20 to $70 Qi charger, plus who knows what for a car mount... Well, most of us have some limit to our disposable income.

Seems like a massive ground-loop issue! Not too sure on solutions though.
A couple years ago, I installed a Pioneer head unit w/bluetooth in one of my cars. Nice being able to play music without wires. Also great for handling my calls as well

This. I don't listen to music very often, but for podcast commutes the functionality of this product is amazing. Still just an FM but done really well. 2003 Lincoln Town Car Cartier Edition, just so there is no comment about put in aftermarket. The wires.....oh the wires...and computers....that aren't really computers....and the wiring manual that is totally not a wiring manual...wtf...but the ride...oh the RIDE.... whatwhatwhat

Back in the day I used to have this problem often. It was always feedback from the alternator.
There were line adapters you could use that would soften the noise, but no solution ever really worked very well.
Since my current head unit doesn't have bluetooth built in, but does have a line-in, I got this:

And it works fairly well. I can now charge my phone, play music through the adapter and not have the horrible high pitched noise.
Only problem is you can't power the adapter and stream through it at the same time. Kinda silly, but oh well.
Oh, and I forgot to mention but that adapted can pair using NFC. I just powered it on, tapped my phone to it and it paired right up.
2014 Camry hybrid + Note 3
I've got a 2014 Camry hybrid and it uses Toyota's eTune software.
Music, pandora, navigation, google voice, keyboard taps, everything worked natively.
I can even use the multimedia controls on the steering wheel to pause/skip music.
Only minor issue is that sometimes it will not go to the next track if the screen is off.
My workaround for this was to dual screen pandora with maps to disable automatic sleep.

I have used the PARROT MKi9200 for about a year and it works great. It has a USB connection on it, so I ran a cable for charging.
I connect through a Fiio e-18 straight to a 1600w and 900w amp hooked to 4 5 1/4 pioneer components and 4 6x8 3 way pioneers and one 12 respectivly. It sounds nice and my only limitation is the bit rate on my music. If i can I usually buy dvd audio and rip it at 192/24 and that usually satisfies my ears

Check GROM audio stuff, the GROM-USB2P can take a bluetooth, AUX, or straight USB connection. With the USB connection, you can use a USB drive(thumb or 2.5") or plug your android phone in and stream any audio through the USB port.
Not all phones/tablets are compatible, but is software limitation only. I have a Nexus 7 connected to my factory car radio via USB.

It sounds good. I read one review that said it gets interference in cars, but I have had possibly two barely-noticable audio glitches in 6 months of using it.
I like the fact that it has no battery and relies on USB power to operate. When the car is switched off, the BTA 10 powers off, disconnecting from the phone which automatically stops playback. Prevously when I used an audio cable from the headphone jack to the car aux, playback continued when the car was switched off (soundlessly if I left it plugged in) - meaning occasionally I'd have podcasts deleted before I heard them if I didn't manually stop playback, thanks to "autodelete on complete" by BeyondPod.
