Text Message Notification not working correctly - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not sure what's going on but lately, for some reason, whenever my wife and I get text messages, the notification only rings for half a second instead of the full notification going off. It's really easy to miss. Anyone else have this problem?

In messages hit menu and go to settings. Scroll down and uncheck the option to delete messages after a certain amount have been received. Message tone will now play in full.

We shouldn't have to uncheck that option to get full message tones. Kind of stupid. Is there any other way around it?

How to not dismiss calendar reminders

When the screen is locked, and a calendar remidner pops up, is the an option other than dismiss or snooze? For some reminders, I don't want to keep snoozing, and I don't want to dismiss cause it'll disappear. On the htc magic I would unlock the screen, check the reminder and then leave it or press home and it would stay in the notification pane until dismissed. But with the hero to even access it it seems I need to dismiss it. Any way around that?
On a completely unrelated matter, when you're talking on the phone and someone rings you, is it not possible to check the number afterwards? Seems that it doesn't register in missed calls.
Cheers.
I can answer the second question, when you go into your contacts (People shortcut), you can scroll to stuff in the bottom. When you slide all the way to the right, there is your call history. You can check incoming, outgoing and missed calls there.

Checked there, it doesn't seem to list missed calls that occurred while you were talking on the phone. So I hear the call waiting beeps, they stop, I end my call, and there's no record of the number that rang during my call.
the calendar thing is indeed a bummer, there should be the possibility to deactivate the alarm AND leaving the reminder unread, so it stays in the notification bar. i am wondering that i didn't notice this by myself yet, since i used to use the calendar this way all the time...
as for second question: just tried it, i see the missed call in the status bar, when i click on it i see it in the call history as missed call. i also see it when going by contacts -> most left icon in the bottom slidebar.
so far: 1. issue is a real annoying issue, 2. issue isn't a problem at all
hmm, thanks, maybe the beeping was in my head and not a call that was waiting!
On the calendar issue, seems to be an htc sense thing, as it worked fine on the htc magic that was plain android.
To not dismiss a reminder dont slide down but press the menu button on the lock screen, it removes the lock screen and takes you into the main screens.

Tried that, it still dismisses (or snoozes) the reminder. Which reminds me, in the calendar options, you can change the reminder display from 'show in notification bar' to ' show as alert' but both seem to do the same, at least when the screen is locked?!

What happens if you just hit the power/end button to turn teh screen off and then turn it in again?
same effect as snooze, pops up again a bit later

Getting multiple notifications for one message?!?

So when I get a new SMS I get multiple notifications. On the status bar, I get the little yellow envelope thing AND some kind of white envelope thing and that makes my phone beep twice. This has happened since I OTA'd to JI6.
I get two vibrates and two ding sounds ._.
Any help appreciated.

You have downloaded some kind of texting app (Handcent/Chompsms/SMS popup?) from the market. Just disable notification from one of them.
I haven't downloaded any of those In my settings, there's an option for notification, but I can turn the notification sound to "silent" but it still double vibrates + shows an extra icon at the top. In the SMS app, there's ALSO another notification setting. I want to use the SMS' app's notification because its not accurate.
Did you download a messaging widget?
I still haven't solved the problem, and no I didn't download a messaging widget =[
Have You tried disabling the notifications in the stock messaging app? what happens?
My wifes phone is doing this also. Hancent and stock set to silent, but still getting a ring and a envelope icon that takes you to the stock message app. Fail. We have the same apps, but mine is fine
"Supersonicly swyped while on the the pot at your moms house. "
Fixed it. Uninstall beautiful widget pack 2
"Supersonicly swyped while on the the pot at your moms house. "
Thank you!!!! I had the same problem and it was driving me mad for months!!! I thought it was CM6 doing it this whole time because I just couldn't figure out what was doing it after I disabled notifications in every sms app.....stupid widgets lmao

Notifications Help

I am having issues with getting notifications on this phone. There is no LED noification light and I don't always hear the audible alert.
Is there a way to make the lock screen light up when a text is received? I have the stock messages and the AT&T messages installed, and neither seem to do this. It will sit there blank until I press the power button and see that something has come in.
I am using the AT&T messages for the visual voicemail, but again, open to suggestions.
Thanks.
my screen comes on when i get a text message. stock messaging app.
you can try SMS Popup and play with the settings in it to get what you want, like text message reminders and screen on/off

Mine never has, even before I installed AT&T messages.
Is there a setting that I missed?
Thanks.
Personally I'd recommend looking into Handcent. It's a much better SMS app imo and it definitely allows a screen pop to occur when the phone is asleep upon receiving a new message. A lot more customization as well.

i would prefer GO SMS PRO over handcent, but thats a personal preference.
@026TB4U, there are no settings within the stock messaging app that would enable/disable screen activation. it just works. when i get a text message and my screen is off, it comes on, shows me the slide to text, then after a few more seconds it shuts off
SMS Popup will allow you to do all kinds of things while still using the stock messaging app.
Thanks for the recommendations, I'll look into them.
What about voicemail?Do any of these handle that? How are you getting notified?
I would really like to find out why mine is not lighting up....lol

I use google voice and love it. Free visual voicemail and they even transcribe it for you. Also +1 on handcent. Been using that for a long time now and love it.
Mine wakes on a new message and gives the audible alert, if you don't have it silenced.

Ok, that's 3 people that have confirmed that my phone is not behaving correctly.
Anybody have any ideas why?
My phone wakes on incoming sms as well.

I uninstalled AT&T Messages and problem is solved.
I do wish it would stay lit longer though...lol

Stuck voicemail notification

I have a voicemail notification on my S that just won't go away.. It says "some notifications cannot be cleared" even though I have no notifications on my phone.. Restarting makes no difference. Any one have any ideas? Thanks in advance

you have to go to the voice mail notification and swipe it own and dismiss it by it self
I have the same problem. I tried doing it thru the watch and it is still there
Yea, its greyed out in the notification itself.. Its just stuck
I had to factory reset my gear to get it to go away. I think it has something to do with the new update
Took me a minute to figure it out - here's how to fix this issue in about 3 seconds.
Go to the voicemail notification on your Gear S.. long press it until the little red minus sign appears at the top right corner, and "remove" the actual screen itself (it doesn't get rid of your notification screen don't worry, it just deletes the voicemail notification)
Profit.
Ha!!!! That worked!! Thank you
Thanks
Worked for me as well. Thanks.
This is really weird. Thank you for the tip. It works, but it is soooooo strange!!!!!
There are two different sources that the trigger the VM notification indicator on the Gear - the phone and the Gear's discrete VM. If you look at the indicator it has two different icons (a phone and watch) so you can tell where the message resides. Clearing the VM notification when it comes from the watch is fine; it deletes like every other notification. The VM notification from the phone is the one that gets stuck and has to be deleted by long pressing it. I have Visual VM so disabled VM notifications from my phone to my Gear since they're redundant any way. Visual VM notifications on the Gear work fine.
Awesome So much frustration , solved with such simplicity
This did not solve my problem. I can long press the notification, but no option appears to let me delete it.

same here
model : SM-R730T
If that's the case, then you have to power up the watch, not connected to the phone, and check the WATCHES voicemail. Then delete it after listening to it.

[Q] Separate notification sound for text message?

I hate that every notification except email has the same sound. How can I change so that text messages have their own notification? Right now text messages and all other random notifications share the same ringtone so I never know if I got a text message or something else.

It doesn't work. If you change it, it changes it for all notifications. Not just texts.
I just figured it out.

I had been looking for this setting for days now and I just stumbled upon it. When you are editing a contact go to the bottom of the contacts information and hit the "ADD ANOTHER FIELD" button. There you will see the ability to add the "Message Tone" field as well as specify a "Vibration Pattern" if wanted. Not sure why they didn't put the Message Tone option on the contact by default.
Tony
Mind blow.
Dude, just set any ringtone for notifications via phone settings - it'l be your sms ringtone AND for any other applications having opportunity to create notifications you should open those applications, go their settings and find there option notifications and change notifications sound directly for that application. Logic!
Binrob, I get what you are after because I did a google search for the very same thing. No one here seems to get it.
What happens is all these other apps utilize the same NOTIFICATION sound as your text messages (like Facebook, or playing back-and-forth board games). Binrob and the rest of us want our TEXT messages TO BE DIFFERENT sounding than all the others. I don't want to look at my phone every time i get a notification, but i do want to look at my phone every time someone texts me. There doesn't seem to be a way to customize SMS/TEXT to its own notification sound. Android needs to fix this.
You've answered everyone's question! This should show up #1 on Google search!

Has there been updates since to change to separate notification for all contacts?
I get this issue and NEED them to fix as well! I don't want fb messenger and text messaging and any other notification to have the same sound. I want to know what app the notification is for WITHOUT unlocking and looking at my phone. Also, on my s5 I was able to change my led color for specific apps. If it blinking red I knew it was a text. Blinking green fb message. Blinking blue fb notification. Etc! Please add those back!
You CAN set the sound for messages, go to settings, notifications, advanced ......... choose messages, more settings (at the bottom of the screen), and the next screen is where you change the sound that is made. Not exactly user friendly though!
I think the answer is as simple.as: go to your message app, top right hit: more, Then go to settings and set whatever ringtone you want to have under notifications. I guess this should be what you are looking for.
Cheers

notificaton tone in message+
The comment that you can set message tones In contacts is correct except that apps like message+ , at least on the Galaxy , ignore that and use their own tones
I just found it....
open messages on the right top corner click there and pick customize ando under tones and there u can pick whatever ringtone for only SMS....
FOR SAMSUNG S9/S9+. To have a specific sound for you messages, go to messaging app/setting/notifications/general notications must be off/emergency alerts must be off. Go to new messages and choose your preferred sounds.
