S3 MHL only output 1080p 24hz which makes game choppy - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone having issue with the original samsung galaxy s3 EPL-3FHU MHL to HDMI outputing in 1080p at 24Hz.
I currently have a 60" 1080P LCD and a 47" 1080P LCD, when connected with the MHL to HDMI, it will only output to [email protected] which play video fine,
but game or menu have that lag/choppy look to it.
I did try it on a buddy 32" 720P LCD and the MHL output it to 720p @60Hz which display game without the choppiness.
Also test it on a 24" 1080P PC Monitor and MHL output 720p to it. Is there any way to change the MHL configuration so that it will output 720p @60Hz onto my big screen 60" and 47" or even a different Adaptor that will only do 720p.
I heard you can use a samsung galaxy s2 MHL with a 5 to 11 pin adapter, anyone have this combination to test what it output at on a 1080P LCD.
If that s2 MHL with adapter works, I will return this s3 MHL and go that route.

I can only get 1080i on all my devices, all my TVs / Monitors are capable of 1080p 60hz but there was no way of making the S3 output anything except 1080i seems it's quite buggy!!!

If it just could be more improved :S No possible settings on the phone, that sucks. I really wanted to choose the resolution myself. Samsung should work on this problem.1080i sucks on my tv, 720p is 1000 times better.
EDIT: Lolz, wtf?? Just tried to connect to my PC monitor, only get 576p, my monitor is 1680x1050p. And the best thing, no way to configurate the output signal :S
We need an app, or a point in the settings. Only then we can get the max out of our superphone.
And I never hard of that thing, that someone got a galaxys2 mhl connector working with a galaxys3.

What Hz or refresh rate are you guys getting with your 1080i, I have seen a picture of someone showing a 1080p @60Hz with a galaxy s2 MHL adapter. The S2 MHL adapter by itself won't work. You will need a samsung 5 to 11 pin adapter which connect in between the s3 phone and the s2 MHL.

guys, I actually didnt know it, but I have a 11-pin mhl-hdmi-adaptor, to be exactly, this one:
http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0080CXSOU/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
But I cant connect more devices over the micro-usb slot. I thought that it is possible with this connector, cause it supports USB OTG and MHL at the same time, so what is up with this ****?
Wikipedia said:
11-pin MHL-USB Connector
The Samsung Galaxy S III uses a connector that is similar to the original 5-pin MHL-USB connector, but it uses 11-pins in order to achieve a few functional improvements over the 5-pin design.
It supports the use of USB and MHL simultaneously (note that the new Samsung 11-pin MHL-HDMI adapter also has a USB-OTG port).
Samsung’s Galaxy S III can power the MHL-HDMI adapter. Although this can theoretically also be done with the standard 5-pin micro-USB connector, the Galaxy S III's 11-pin connector is believed to be the first smartphone that supports this functionality.

You will need this 5 pin to 11 pin adapter for your s2 MHL adapter to work with the s3, search amazon for it,
"Original Samsung HDTV Adapter TIP (5 to 11 Pin Converter) EPL-FU10BEBSTD"

Does anyone found a solution for what was the initial question?
I'm having the same issue also using the original samsung galaxy s3 EPL-3FHU except that the display is limited to 30 Hz for me.

Maybe it will be fixed in jellybean.. doubt it very much though.

I am having the same issues ... I have a Vizio 1080p 240hz and I am getting choppy gameplay too. Very disappointing, considering that gaming was the sole reason I bought it =(
I wish Samsung with come up with a solution.

Does anyone know if you can buy these any cheaper than £25 ($50)?

720p only
I have a whole different story going on...
With this aftermarket hdmi mhl adapter i only get 720p on tv, sound out of sync, flickering, display cutting in and out.
With same movie on droid charge via direct hdmi get 1080i on tv, perfect sync, all apps work flawless as usual.
This aftermarket adapter cant be that bad...?!
Any input?

no one more news or gadgets since?

I also have choppy output with my S3 MHL adaptor. I wonder if there's a way to force the refresh rate somehow?

Has anyone tried overclocking to boost the frame rate? I've had the same problem as everyone else when trying to watch 1080 video on a 46" 1080 TV, but it only skips once every second or two on random intervals. It's JUST enough skipping that you know something isn't right, but almost can't put your finger on it. I may try overclocking to boost it in the next few days. If I do I'll post back with results. For reference, I'm using an ATT GS3 rooted with the stock TW ROM.

I just get 1080I on my 1080P sony Led 55" and 1080I on my Dell 1080P monitor 24"
I rather get 720P than 1080I, but i cannot change it

Better but still an issue.
I just installed the Hyperdrive rom with the kernel that can overclock on my SCH-I535 S3 and tried the official 11 pin Samsung hdmi adapter and was getting 1080 at 30hz witch is better then before. Also my phone was syncing to 30hz. Before it was 1080 at 24hz and the phone was syncing to 60hz witch caused every thing to look extremely choppy. Now games are playable but still could be much better if we had 720 at 60hz.
I'm not sure what changed from the stock rom to Hyperdrive but it seems that the output can be changed some how.
Also I seen that the HTC One S has a kernel (ZeroMHL) that can force there hdmi output to 720 but I don't know if the same method could be applied here.
Edit:
It seems that ZeroMHL fixed the kernel by finding key words and changing the limitations. As a professional I'm a video game programmer but I'm going to try and see if I can modify kernel source to get 720 60hz. If I can do it ill post the kernel / source.

[Q] SGSII discharge while on MHL adapter, even when charging !

Hi Guys,
sorry for another thread about MHL, but I think this should be visible. I got MHL adapter directly from Samsung (borrowed for testing) and here are some troubles:
1) TV is showing that source is 1080p, but real picture is not that good. Maybe it is worse than 720p.
2) You cannot use the original Samsung MHL without charger in it. Simply the screen shows "no signal".
3) Bigger problem is the fact, that SGS II is discharging while on MHL, even the system is showing charging indicator. It is really weird and I will try to contact Samsung for some details.
Before I will send that email, can anyone check it? In my test it is enough to run some 1080p trailer at highest brightness for about minute or two. After that you will loose 1% from capacity.

What ROM you running?
On earlier ROMs, whilst playing Order & Chaos on charge, my phone would still lose battery.
My setup:
Android version: 2.3.3
Baseband version I9100BUKE1
Build number:GINGERBREAD.BUKE5
According to Kies, this is the latest version available.
interesting, what are you powering it with?, psu adapter into a plug socket or are you just using a usb port to power it, if you are using a USB port to power it then it may not be pumping enough amps.
In regard to the poor picture, The MHL is just HDMI digital and so it cannot effect the picture really, I suspect your player on the phone is doing something to it, alternatively does your TV have compression on that input channel to soften or deblock? - are you sure the video you are playing is full HD or just looks like full HD on your small sg2 screen?
Its a bit worrying if it still drains as this effectively defeats the object of it.
I'm using original charger, which is in the pack. I'm going to test it on second Galaxy S II today and see the result.
With the resolution - I've made the tests on Philips Cinema 21:9 (2560x1080) and even the menu is really awful. Photos taken by the SGS II are slightly blur and text in browser hard to read . The trailers are also bad, as I said above.
I used PC with that TV and same trailer is absolutely smooth, so problem maybe in the player on SGSII, but I bet on problem somewhere in MHL transfer.

The 650 mA limit is in effect when it's connected to an AC charger, as determined by the resistance across the two data pins on the microUSB connector. Low resistance (< 200 ohm) indicates an AC charger; if the resistance is higher, it will treat the connection as a standard USB, in which case the current is limited to 450 mA (just below the 500 mA minimum +5VDC current in the USB 2.0 spec). Speculation is that the 650 mA limit is in place to keep the battery from overheating/exploding during charging.
What's almost certainly happening is that the SGS2's charge logic considers the MHL adapter connection to be a regular USB connection, thus limiting the charge current to 450 mA. If the SGS2 is drawing more than 450 mA as a result of its exertions (such as playing HD video), the battery will discharge.
There's probably a reason why Samsung did it this way -- the AC charger also has to power the MHL adapter, which has a bridge chip & support logic on it. If the SGS2 tried to draw a full 650 mA from it, the charger might not have enough capacity left to power the MHL logic.
The power issue has been covered now so it just leaves the output quality. So what you are saying is that you have played the same trailor on the TV using both a PC and your Phone and the phone output is bad?.
Any chance you could take some photos so we can see, I ask as HDMI is digital, you don't really get interference like old scart or S video adapters, usually the picture is either there and sharp or not there at all. If it is blurred it is either the player applying some sort of de-blocking / compression or the TV is, just cannot see this being the adapter.
The SGSII outputs in 1080i. Set your TV to 1080i instead of forcing it to 1080p and the image quality should improve. On mine, menus look crisp and games all work fine. The TV shows that it is 1080i, and I have set mine to accept all settings (720i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p)

HDMI Cable quick review

Just received my HDMI cable (http://electroniccrap.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=&products_id=27)from electronicCrap, it works perfectly. It also works as a DVI cable for connecting to business projectors (without sound of course) with a small adapter such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimited-ADP-3780-Female-Adapter/dp/B0018QTWH2
Great product if you need to do presentations or anything. Just be aware that most apps are fairly low resolution (ie will look pixelated) even if the tablet is outputting a full 1080p signal.
The only minor issue is the connector to the gTab, which is a bit bulkier than what is pictured on his site. This could be a problem with some cases, but it works well with mine (the FUSE).
Update 7/23:
-Cable works great on 1080p monitors and TVs.
-HW accelerated apps display at much higher resolution. Everything else is 1024x600 with poor (pixelated) scaling.
-Cable may not work on 720p TV's.
-May not display HW acclrrated 1080p properly on 720p TV even if other things work
-Audio is stereo only as far as I and others can tell. Does android as a platform even support 5.1?

...some [720p] TVs can handle the 1080p input and scale it down, while others cannot.
Lastly, playing a 1080p movie will not output to a 720p TV. For one reason or another when I played both Divx and H264 in 720p or other lower resolutions it showed up fine on my TV, however both Divx and h264 1080p movies just displayed a blank screen while they played fine on the display on the gtab.
Hope this helps some people...

Actually the dock is $43 shipped world wide (with CC "welcome").
And beside the HDMI cable you get a supplementary charging solution, stand, 2 USB port and LAN port.
I got this cable, but it is not working for me. I have a 720p plasma and am wondering if the Gtab output does not work with 720p TVs. I know the Gtab is detecting the HDMI connection because the sound goes off on the Gtab. But on the TV, all I get is a blank screen saying no signal.
Information to add
Just my two cents since receiving this cable.
I have successfully used the cable on my 50 inch Samsung 720p TV with a Froyo, Gingerbread, and Honeycomb rom. Any graphics that are NOT accelerated by the tegra chip looks VERY pixelated, so bad its almost unusable. However watching movies on a Froyo rom using the hardware decoder look VERY NICE! Also games designed for the tegra chip look great also, ie. Riptide rush. Software decoded movies suffer from the same horrible pixelation. I have not been able to determine if the HDMI cable or the tegra chip for that matter can process and pass 5.1 audio channels, but regular stereo audio worked on my TV. If anyone knows if 5.1 channel audio can be passed I'd love to know.
Additionally, I could NOT get the cord to work on my 32 inch Samsung. I think some TVs can handle the 1080p input and scale it down, while others cannot.
Hope this helps some people and I hope we can get some graphics acceleration for Honeycomb soon...heard someone has a Notion Ink kernel with full graphics acceleration, can that be ported to the gtab?
updated op. cable works great for me on 1080 screens. yes, 30 is a lot for only hdmi. but it is compact and easy to carry compared to the dock. basically we are paying for the r&d costs. I am just glad this thing exists.
Does the cable work with honeycomb roms? And does the power have to be plugged in for the cable to work? I'm having no luck with video showing up on my tv with the HDMI cable hooked up. I running gtabcomb atm.

[Q] My new PC... the S3!! MHL HDMI Resolution

Hey guys and gals,
Although I've been lurking on these forums for a few weeks I've finally decided to join and ask some questions.
I've completed my S3 PC, got a nice monitor with HDMI input, bluetooth keyboard and mouse and of course the MHL adapter. Everything works great.. time to get rid of the ageing PC in my office.
I have a question though, I've connected the S3 to my TV and the new monitor and I never get a 1080p connection.. it's always 1080i
Is there any way to force 1080p as I do get a slight flicker with 1080i
I'm totally amazed at what the S3 can do! BTW I was a total apple fanboy until I got my S3 a few weeks ago.
Cheers in advance... and yes I searched
so nobody else is having this issue?? I was really hoping to get some help here Anyone??
Sure your monitor supports 1080p? What hz does it run when using 1080i?

It doest output 1080p via hdmi just 1080i iv tested on all my tv sets and there are all top line and display tbe same i dont get any flicker tho are you using a good hdmi cable?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
thanks for confirming snowwhite007... I honestly thought it was able to output 1080p. I guess the slight flicker is due to the monitor then.
Flickering may also be due to the phone's HDMI chip. I'm not sure if it's clock source and other components are stable enough for a clean transmission of 31'104'000 (31,1million) pixels per second (1920 width*1080 height*30 images/second / 2 (interleaved) )
1080i and 1080p have the same native resolution of 1920x1080 pixels with the only difference being that "i" (interlaced) paints odd lines before even in 2 'ticks' while "p" (progressive) paints in one go from top to bottom.
So if there is any flickering it SHOULD only be every other line, can you confirm that?
Hi, i've got a question, can anyone give me a tip which keyboard and mouse works best with the s3?
I want to do exactly what you did. I want to use my phone as a pc.
So any Idea?
I bought a cheap bluetooth keyboard an mouse from Deal Extreme worka great
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Might sound like a silly thing, but just check your power saving isn't enabled, found that while it is enabled stuff like 1080 vids played really badly. That and what type of hdmi cable you are using could be factors.
I went on hols for two weeks and just took my S3 and a portable hard drive with hdmi and usb adapters and cables and used the hotels 1080p tvs as a full desktop, ubuntu and all
I am pretty positive that everytime I have used the hdmi it has been at 1080p. My guess is maybe a tv error unless it has run 1080p before?
EDIT: Oooh, just had another thought, what exact hdmi adapter did you use? Link included if that's not against forum rules? Know when I got mine I had to wade thru a lot of close immitations that don't display properly as they are cheap fakes sold as the real thing, one would only display 720p
can you tellme the model of bluetooth keyboard and mouse? i wanna do the same

I bought a generic mini bluetooth keyboard from amazon marketplace, it's not the bees knees but its about the size of the phone, bluetooth, rechargeable and only £10.
Works great for using the terminal or typing complex passwords etc when traveling or using as a desktop.
Also used the microsoft notebook bluetooth mouse 5000, got that cheap through amazon marketplace too.
Neither come with bluetooth adapters though so would need to by one seperately if ever using with a pc that doesn't have built in bluetooth.
1080i
Hi
I recently purchased MHL adapter from this website
http://www.clove.co.uk/samsung-galaxy-s3-mhlhdmi-adaptor
And I have same problem as you. My TV only gets 1080i not 1080p.
However I don't get flickering, I just see that there is not enough vertical pixels (visible difference)
Tried bunch of different hdmi cables (cables that work with various 1080p devices with no issues whatsoever) and I always get 1080i.
Even when I try to playback video which is 1080p.
I'll try later if there is any difference if I plug it in through AMP (onkyo) and not the tv and let you know if there is any difference.
Cheers

MHL output resolution

Anyone happen to know if my Galaxy S2 can use MHL with a 720p screen?
My main TV reports that the signal from the MHL adapter is 1080p, but can that be changed or does the adapter auto-select a resolution? (I mean the Galaxy S2 is 480p)
I'm thinking of buying a smaller TV for my bedroom but I cant find 1080p ones (so please don't suggest me to look for 1080p one).
You can resize the screen on the tv. the MHL is up to 1080p, so it can also get lower.
I have 20" syncmaster t2000hd (16:10, 1680x1050p)
Should work good on it i guess.

[Q] MHL 1080p output

Another MHL question from me.
Does the XZU support 1080p output over MHL? I have a feeling before the KitKat update that it did. With KitKat update, when I plug in the MHL to my monitor, the monitor reports a 720p signal. There was another post where someone stated you can change the resolution settings but I don't seem to have that.
I use mine with mhl latest kk build and it's 1080p I don't know where you can change the resolution. The only thing that bothers me is that the mhl 1 standard that the zu uses only supports 30hz

Thanks for the info. I tried two MHL adapters on two different monitors and both report 720p though I know these monitors will support 1080p through HDMI as I get that resolution when plugging in a monitor. Maybe something weird with the HDCP handshake? I'll try on my HDTV when I get home. Hopefully I don't have to go questing for a different MHL adapter (had to go through three to find one that would charge my phone while using HDMI out).
I have one that it charges my phone directly from the TV but the TV has one hdmi with mhl built in. If you use one that you needs 5v from charger or USB you should try the I9100(S3) mhl dongle works perfectly with our zu

Yes, same thing happens to me as well.
I bought this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/321336887491 and the output is 720p 60hz.
The image is blurry and it is very annoying
If I remember correctly same thing has happened both in 4.3 and in 4.4 (rooted locked bootloader)
Hi harisled, I haven't tried it on my HT setup yet but I think I know why it is not working (at least for me) on my computer monitors. I had forgotten that the MHL 1.0 spec only allows 1080p @ 30Hz until mr.joshuanice had mentioned it. The two monitors I tried it on initially are computer monitors so they probably don't support 1080p @ 30Hz. I'm guessing the HDCP handshake (or whatever it is called) reduced the resolution to 720p @ 60Hz which is supported by my monitor. However, this causes the monitor to upscale causing the image to be blurry (like you have experienced).
I will test it on my HT this weekend which should work (I remembered testing this out a while ago). The only thing that sucks is playing games @ 1080p. As some have experienced, playing PS Mobile games at 1080p resolution makes the game really sluggish (@ 720p is great). I remembered someone had show a screenshot of a menu which allowed you to change the resolution but it may have been a different Sony phone or a different ROM.
You are right, it did output 1080p 30hz on a tv

I use mine with mhl latest kk build and it's 1080p I don't know where you can change the resolution. The only thing that bothers me is that the mhl 1 standard that the zu uses only supports 30hz

You can enforce the output format by dialing *#*#7378423#*#* then navigate to Service tests -> TV-Out Test -> Video format. Note that "Video format" will only be modifiable when the MHL cable is plugged in.

I tried that on my PC monitor but, as expected, nothing changed since the monitor does not support 1080p 30hz

I know this is old, but is there an option to save the MHL-Setting in the Service menu permanently? After each reboot, the screen resolution is scaled to the default settings again.
Everybody who has problems with screen resolution can simply set the resolution and fps in the service menu under "second screen" .. For that type *#*#7378423#*#* in the phone dialer
For me its not even switching to 1080p when I select it in the service menu. It says reconnect but then again its set to 720p. Xperia Z and Z2 only outputing 720p. Are they even capable of 1080p MHL?
Is it possible the MHL cable is just crap?

The Z Ultra has MHL 1.0 or most likely 2.0 since 2.0 requires 900mA and therefore an external power source is needed (which my cable has) while 1.0 only requires 500mA, which is provided through a regular USB/HDMI. Both 1.0 and 2.0 support uncompressed 1080p and Dolby 7.1. MHL 3.0 was released just a month before the Ultra hit the market, so it doesn't have 3.0, which supports 4K and some other stuff.
The Z2 and beyond have MHL 3.0, and yes, it could be your cable. Be sure that it's 3.0 for the Z2 and 1.0/2.0 for the Z.
I tried 2 MHL1.0 adapters before and the output was 720p only for my Sony Tablet Z4...
Luckily I found the MHL3.0 adapter last night and the the output become 1080P 60Hz for my projector now. Try to find the MHL 3.0 from Taobao or eBay.
