Tmobile SGS3, no LTE, deal breaker? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So im ready to upgrade my phones on Tmobile and I read that the SGS 3 does not support LTE on Tmobiles network. Is this a deal breaker? Ive read that LTE is a battery vampire. Tmobile LTE network isnt due till next year. I plan on keeping the SGS 3 for 2 years, hoping it would be a bit of future proofing for me since its the hottest phone right now.

It's up to you, if LTE speed (constant 15Mbps+) is necessary for you then get an LTE S3 like ATT. If 3-7Mbps speed is enough, then get an HSPA+ only S3 like T-Mo.
However, the T-Mo S3 has 42Mbps+ radio, so if you a near a T-Mo tower, you can potentially get 10-20Mbps download speed.
You might better off ask this at the T-Mobile S3 section.

yup false alarm...........
I don't think the retraction of the tweet is any indication T-Mob wont be getting the S2. With the Galaxy 4G coming out in a few days, if mainstream customers new there was a phone twice as good on the horizon it would obliterate S4G sales. Plus from my understanding there's nothing in the specs that eliminates T-Mob as a possibility. 90% chance T-Mob gets this phone, which I'm of course stoked about.
This phone is said to be shipping with AT&T's 3G, but that it will work with any carrier. So, for you T-Mobile users, it will probably work, but only for 2G speeds. Sorry.
There is absolutely no way Samsung will make this super phone and limit its data potential to Att's ****ty 3G.

dont forget tmobile has a 5gb limit its NOT unlimited
Per the link you supplied:
HSPA+ 21Mbps/ HSUPA 5.76Mbps
EDGE/ GPRS Class 12
Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900
Quad band UMTS 850/900/1900/2100
Seems to me T-mobile's HSPA+ will be compatible, unless I'm completely missing something.
And to the above comment, 5G is plenty, even for most heavy users.
Won't this device support both 3G company's? From the specs of the link

Sure, T-Mobile UK is compatible
T-Mobile US's HSPA+ uses 1700/2100 or AWS.

Gotcha. I don't see why T-mobile wouldn't get this phone, as i said before, suppressing of information seems to be just a marketing strategy to not crush S4G sales coming up.
they wont get this phone immediatley as it will complete with the sgs 4g which they are getting.. eventually they may get it.
If the device is coming out in march outside the states, I'd think the new one will come out in some form in June or July like the last one did. That will give tmo a few months to sell their vibrant 4g and then allow it to be a decent midrange model thereafter. Considering that the 4g is going to be 149 with contract, its already the price of of a non flagship T-Mobile device. That could mean we have a small chance of getting this phone in April or may. They still need to make an aws version in order for us to have the phone on tmo. Given how much market share they made with the last galaxy I really think Samsung will want to not lose their lead in android market share. We will get at least some version of this phone. I hope now that US carriers all have ffc and the other features left out of the previous galaxy s for the states, that they won't need to give us a stripped gs2. Just my 2 cents.

that's one thing you do not need to worry about
look at the line of Galaxy S (Generation 1) phones, they have practically 1 variant for each single cell phone carrier on the planet.
some carriers even have 3 models of the same Galaxy S family
for example Tmobile USA have:
Galaxy S Vibrant
Nexus S
Galaxy S 4G
so we'll see our own flavor of SGS2 in due time
knowing their crazy naming scheme
i'll not be surprised to hear Galaxy S Vibrant II LOL
and probably comes with something chopped off like missing FFC or who knows what.
Hopefully they'll get some version of it... ATT blows..
So... any idea on how we're going to know which is the original phone model?
I guess we would just go off of the one coming out in March, and then try to buy that model off of whichever carrier carries it?
Because I wasn't very fond of the different versions of the Galaxy S - the Vibrant, the I9000 (which might be the same), the Captivate, the... who knows what else? Each carrier here (Rogers, Telus and Bell) had different versions. I don't even know what other ones like Virgin or WIND may have had for it (if they carried it).

ATT Question

OK I have searched and can't find an answer to a couple of questions.
I am coming from a rooted Epic 4G on Sprint. I am not familiar with unlocked gsm phones. I am switching to att because i am moving to an area with bad sprint coverage.
I was going to buy an Infuse, but it seems the Galaxy S II is better. I understand i can use the SII on att's network but i am unsure about a couple things.
1) will i be able to utilize their semi 4G data network? When they get 4G LTE, will i be able to use that?
2) what downside is there to going the S II route vs an Infuse other than $$? Looks to me like the SII is way better.
Anything else I need to consider?

The international SGS2 phones you can buy today don't have LTE, so they won't work on the AT&T LTE network. They will, however, work on AT&T's HSPA+ network -- I regularly get about 4 Mbps, and have gotten as high as 7. You can use a regular 3G plan on the HSPA+ network; I have the old $30/month 3G smartphone unlimited data plan, and I haven't had any problems connecting to HSPA+ in places where it's available.
There is some speculation that the AT&T version of the SGS2 (called Attain) may have LTE support. Unfortunately, this phone isn't available yet, and as far as I know, no release date has been announced.
Thanks for the info. As a practical matter i shouldnt worry too much about LTE. I live in a rural area which just got 4G, but is very ulikely to upgrade to LTE anytime soon. I will probably want another phone by the time we see LTE here. Now i have to decide if i want to spend $450 more to get the SII over the Infuse. The SII has more RAM, dual core processor and higher res second camera (bfd). Im not sure what other improvements.
Any other advice or insight would be appreciated. Im sure gonna mis the hardware keyboard on my epic!

this is the best news for all T-MOBILE customers ever

soon we won't have to go through all the nonsense, not having the right bands for our phones.

If you're willing to wait a year or two...
I think it's great news. The only thing that has kept me at ATT was the family plan and t-mo 2g speeds with my ATT phones.
also this will allow tmo users to get phones directly from there german counterpart. deff give them an advantage because they wont have to have phones custom made for the aws band that they use now
I dont think T-Mobile and AT&T will be on the same LTE bands, and worldwide fragmentation of wireless spectrum is going to be much worse as well with LTE.

I'm still trying to figure out if our LTE will be compatible. I'm assuming our (tmo) will be linked with sprint.

Which Mega is the best to use with Tmobile?

I'm currently with sprint and switching to Tmobile. I have my heart set on the Mega. I have read people having mixed results with getting tmobile lte working is that correct? hell, i've never been able to use lte since sprint blows in my area but supossedly i have lte with tmobile here.
anyways, i can buy an unlocked international mega on ebay for like $400 and i've seen some used At&t mega's for around $300 as well.
which of these two models would be best for tmobile and why? thanks.

I dont think you can get lte with the i9205 as that has been my goal since I got this phone. This is the european version and runs on different frequencies from what i understand. The most i get is hspa+ which is great but the signal is very inconsistent. Get the i527 so you can enjoy lte.
Post above I think is correct... I get h+... And so forth but haven't seen LTE... I don't really have LTE around me either I don't believe but I'm happy with it at least.. I use wifi a lot too though

I second this.
I just got my AT&T unlocked Mega i527 today, and I get 16-18 Mbps download speed on T-mobile. The upload speed I get is around 3-6 Mbps.
It is definitely the one you wanna get if you want fast data on T-mobile.
I have the i9200 and get hspa+ speed of about 11-12mbps download and about 2.5mbps upload on t-mobile in nyc. I also have an at&t galaxy note lte unlocked that I use on t-mobile and get about 20mbps down and 10mbps up. I tested the internet speeds on both devices in my everyday usage (live streaming, internet surfing, email, etc.). Seems like whatever streamed smoothly on the galaxy note while on lte also streamed smoothly on the galaxy mega on hspa+. When something buffered on the mega while on hspa+ it also buffered on the note while on lte. They basically performed about the same in my everyday usage. My goal was to see the difference between lte and hspa+ on t-mobile.
I was seriously considering getting the i527 (unlocked so i could use it on t-mobile) just for the lte but I'm not sure it will be worth me spending the money. The only time I really saw a difference between hspa+ and lte on t-mobile is with Speedtest (which isn't real life usage but just the app i used to test the internet speed on both devices) and downloading very large files. Downloading large files took noticeably less time on lte. I don't download or upload large files on a regular basis so that's not an issue for me.
Fyi...I went to an AT&T store to try out their i527 on their lte network. The internet speed seemed slower than my i9200 on t-mobile's hspa+ network (both Speedtest and surfing/streaming). I thought it would have blown my phone out the water. I was NOT impressed. Also their locked, unrooted and bloated i527 seemed laggy compared to my unlocked, rooted and unbloated i9200. I haven't had the opportunity to test a rooted unbloated i527.
I got my phone when it first came out a few months ago and have not ran across 1 person yet with any version of the mega. Strange since different carriers have versions of this phone plus the unbranded versions that have been out for a few months already.

[Q] SCH-I545 T-Mobile Switch

Howdy all,
I bought the VZW S4 when it was brand new and am lucky enough to still have an mdk bootloader. But wow vzw is expensive and living in Denver and being a world traveler for work, T-Mobile has peaked my interest with their prices and the international data usage...
I am running hyperdrive 17.1 and the phone is great and running like butter. From what I've read I can get a T-Mobile Sim card, change the APN and voilĂ . But T-Mobile employees say my 4G LTE will go in and out and only work where T-Mobile has certain bands of 4G. The coverage map looks good but I have no idea what band of 4G LTE it is.
My question is if I can flash the T-Mobile version of hyperdrive or another T-Mobile rom onto my mdk vzw s4, change the APN and have a fully functioning T-Mobile S4? Or will it lack certain frequencies and drop 4G often? Anyone who has attempted the switch please feel free to comment on your experience so far. Thank you XDA!

Nothing you flash will add more bands than this phone has, it's a hardware issue, it only has AWS (which T-Mobile uses) and 700c (band13) which (I think only) Verizon uses.
I'm not sure exactly what other (if any) bands T-Mobile uses for LTE
I've got the sane setup in Chicago. I'm not a world traveler but while your her you can expect anywhere from 20 to 33 mbps. You should tell your job to get you a dedicated line w/ tmo.

That's great to hear! Did you flash a T-Mobile rom or just use the vzw rom with T-Mobile APN?
I just want to make sure that I still get a decent connection in most cities, not slugging along at 2g, 90% of the time because its not a T-Mobile phone. If that's the case, I might consider buying a T-Mobile phone, but that hurts the whole argument of ditching vzw to save $$

I changed mine to MetroPCS which runs on the T-Mobile network. the guy at the store did the swap and it runs on the network and 4G/LTE in most metro areas very well, but loses any data connection in remote areas (I live in east-central Wyoming and it only works data in the larger towns here but still gets calls and texts anywhere you get a signal. It will at times toggle between 3G to 4G in some areas. and foxfi will run on it too if you hide the data usage when tethering. hope it helps.
