OTA or Odin - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I picked up an sgs3 the other day. The firmware on it is XXLF2. I was just wondering what the experiences were with regards to OTA update? Is it recommended or would flashing the latest LG8 fw for UK via Odin be better?
Thanks for any advice.

One of the reasons why it might come in handy to restore a previous update could be due to the fact that the new update will not be optimized for our phone and waiting for the release of a more stable version, use Odin may serve us to go back. A very recent example is the first update to Android 4.0.3 on Galaxy S2 where there were several people who wanted to go back to Gingerbread ... Of course, another reason could be that we want to load a firmware later, but that in our country has not yet been made available ... see Notes Galaxy and the German ROM which runs the network.
But Odin is not only original Samsung firmware to load, but also allows you to load ROM cooked in order to have more personalized and optimized.
Odin's software runs on Windows PCs, and lets you do the above, but now we see how the program works.

Nice1 thank you devid801. I've used Odin to flash ROMs on my sgs1 but the OTA update on sgs3 has me interested Suppose I could always flash via Odin the latest FW if OTA FW isn't the latest.
Thanks again mate.

we say that the telephone operators are slow to release updates, even compared to the parent, so if you do not want to wait using odin! read a guide before, and you always make a nandroid backup before making any operation. ..

Odin is beeing used in official service and repair centers to flash samsung firmware

As always two paths for ease of use one via Samsung Kies or OTA .
OTA will probably fail on rooted phone .
Join XDA flash stock firmware as and when you want .
My view is if you want to stay with Samsung /official path then do so but its the attempts to mix and match that lead to trouble .

Thanks jje. I think i'll stay stock for now but see what update OTA offers me Saying that, XXLF2 fw does not seem bad so far.
Will look to find what the differences are between LF2 and LG8 fw.
Thanks for all the feedback.

I have recently flashed my Orange GS3 to XXLF2. I'm not getting any OTA updates post flashing and i know there is an update that gives you the option to auto aujust brightness on the drop down. Is this normal after flashing? Or has something gone a bit wrong?

You no longer have Orange firmware .
You no longer have phone codes that match any upgrade .
Their is no upgrade for your phone model
Plus all the other usual answers .
Choice flash roms from XDA or return to Orange for an update .

[Q] confused

Hi Peeps
So a few months back the wife managed to get a Samsung S2 from Orange
I Rooted it and unlocked it Thanks Chainfire
She then a look around xda and said she would like the lighting rom please. So Thats what I did. 1.5
Now 3 months later and Daughter has a s2 as well.
Wife now wants hers to latest stock.
Thing is I don't have a clue about all the firmware numbers. I just get confused by all the latest xxs and kes w and what ever plus 2.3.3. and 2.3.4 etc etc etc. would some nice person please point me at the latest unbranded stuff for Samsung S2 I have read the brilliant posts and threads by infatech but that just makes it worse lol.
Please help
Others may wish to take issue with this, but as far as I can tell, there is little difference between XXKG5, XXKG6 and XXKG7.
XXKG6 marginally pre-dated 5 & 7, and 5 seems to be better regarded than 7. 6 Seems to be a semi-official test version.
I guess the advice would probably be XXKG5, but I use 6 and am perfectly content with it.
Thanks Gustopher.
and I can get XXKG5 or XXKG6 or XXKG7 for UK from???
You can pretty much flash most Stock ROM with their modem (baseband). You just need to try which is best for you.
The webversion of Check Fus 2.0
There you can download CLI or Windows version of Fus Downloader. For Windows version, you need to have .NET framework 4 installed.
You can download most stock firmware using the Fus Downloader.
Example:
Last modified:
2011-08-02
Latest firmware:
I9100XXKG5/I9100OXAKG5/I9100XXKG5/I9100XXKG5
Version:
Android 2.3.4
Model GT-I9100
Product code GT-I9100LKAXEO
HIDSWVER I9100XXKE2/I9100OXAKE2/I9100XXKE2/I9100XXKE2
Just unzip the file you download, then select the *.tar file under Phone in Odin, and flash.
t xxkg6 from this thread and just change the csc for uk which isa one the files under the xxkg6 section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Forgot to mention, you can go to the Settings -> About Phone menu, and see what ROM+BASEBAND+KERNEL your daughter is using, then download that exact same rom. Which is probably better for you, since if one have problems, then they both have the exact same problems, and by association, THERE IS NO PROBLEMS... Just like Apple iPHONES.
I would go KG6 firmware and modem and drop back to KG3 if problems .

Because he used a custom rom which means as you know kies will not work on the phone to get an official update and he wants to go back to stock or the latest stock he can get.

[Q] 02 Branded SGS2 - Is it worth de-branding?

I've got a galaxy s2 from 02 and it is branded and running o2's flavour of software.
I've attached 2 screenshots to show the version I have.
Is it worth it for me to debrand, what would I realistically gain? I've looked through the forums and it seems there is newer generic firmware available. But there also seems to be mixed opinion as to weather it's worth upgrading. From what I can see I have 2.3.3 KF3 if that helps
It also appears that by flashing generic stock firmware via odin I will still be able to use kies so any future releases will download through kies using the firmware update feature?
Answers as always appreciated.
IF you download, from here, the latest stock Samsung ROM, then you will be able to fool KIES into thinking that your phone is no longer an O2 SGSII but a unbranded one. Thus you will be able to get the next available update of the official stock ROM when it is released via KIES.
The most important feature is an improvement in battery life.
If you stick with the branded ROM, then you have to wait a few months for the stock update to be customised by the operator and released.
This is the most important: if you flash an unbranded ROM, then you have invalidated your phone's warranty. You can simply reflash the O2 branded ROM, again available on here, this will put you phone back in warranty.
ok I see is there a link to the post that has the most recent fw? I will ofc check the dev forum stickies Many thanks for the swift reply and advice.
Without a doubt, so many good custom roms available and more newer stock firmwares. You can undo everything so no need to worry about putting it back to stock o2
cheers
Yeah I think I'll flash to generic stock rom then take in the updates from sammy, I'm blown away with this phone as it is running stock roms.
Will wait for ICS to be available on a un-official rom before I debate custom roms,
As soon as I got my sgs2 from O2, I debranded it straight away
Wow what a difference my phone is marginally faster one booted on 2.3.4 bootup is way quicker internet also seems faster.
Unlike X10i flashing new fw didn't basically factory reset the phone everything was as i left it bar the fw.
Had slight issue where it seemed to hang at the last big galaxy s screen for a minute or 2 when first booted but all phones seem to do this when flashed.
One question - my market hasn't changed os there a new one and should it automatically update?

[SOLVED] Cannot find correct stock firmware

Hi there
First of all, i have checked out intratech's thread but the links referring to the firmware are not working. I have also checked sammobile, and i found a firmware that supposedly was for my phone, but Kies begs to differ
Anyway, the phone i have is a GT-9100LKANEE, and it was shipped with
android: 2.3.5
baseband: I9100XXKI4
Build: GINGERBREAD.XWKI8
So i thought i struck luck at sammobile when i found this: I9100XWKI8_I9100OXXKI2_NEE.zip.html
It flashed allright and i thought i was out of the woods, but when i went through the startup wizard the language was danish (i am norwegian), and now Kies wont even bother looking for updates for my phone. It just says "this device's version cannot be updated"
So much for the "stock" experience
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You can use Check Fus Downloader to check and download stock ROMs directly from Samsung servers.
Here is a link to the Check Fus homepage => http://fus.nanzen.se/

I downloaded the right one, but it is the same as the one i flashed from sammobile. But for some reason Kies does not want to have anything to do with updating my device. I mean, it is fully updated now though, but whenever ICS comes along through kies, it wont let me update.
This was all easier when all i had was the HTC Hero
Unfortunately, that seems to be happening a lot to people who have gone back to stock firmware. Kies should work so far as receiving updates go, but for whatever reason they don't. It may be a case of having not downloaded the correct firmware in Checkfus. It may be some kind of country mismatch which is causing Kies not to allow you access to updates. Or it could also be that Kies has no updates available now.
Having not experienced the problem (and having not ever used Kies/not wanting to ever use Kies for anything/and not really being interested in ICS), I can't say why this is happening for sure.
Whatever the reason for the problem, when ICS is released, you'll be able to download this with Checkfus as well (Checkfus enables you to download any firmware updates available via Kies).

I'm in Norway too, and as far as I know KI8 is the most recent official stock firmware. I'm on Netcom, who's your operator?
Try an older stock firmware - KE7 for example, and see what Kies updates to. Back up first though.
Lykke til.

I am on Teliasonera (Tele 2)
I'll try your suggestion!
Takk.
So i think i have found out why Kies wont update my phone. It seems the product code on my phone has been changed somewhere along the flashing spree i've been on.
My phone is originally a GT-I9100LKANEE, but now it is GT-I9100LKAXEU. So what now? i downloaded the firmware for LKANEE on checkfus but it still comes out LKAXEU.
Do i have to change it manually? Like explained here: http://goangeek.wordpress.com/2011/10/11/how-to-change-sgs2-product-code/
And do i have to flash something again?
I am completely lost at the moment.
And i am threading around carefully because i dont want to brick my phone in the process.

[Q] Installing JB 4.1.1 and Baseband Version + CSC

Hello guys!
I have Galaxy S3 I9300 GSMH.
It's unbranded, i made a research in the forum and it's supposed to be a factory unlocked phone. following the coment "But as such there is no restriction to use any ROM for any country if your device is unlocked(carrier restriction free)" by dr.ketan in http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1801022
My actual firmware installed is the UBBLG2. It's running ICS 4.0.4.
So, here is the thing, I need to know if I can stall any Official Firmware from Samsung with Jelly Bean 4.1.1.
1. What Official firmware should I install?
2. Should I change the CSC too? indicated in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1646610
3. Can I install the latest Firmware from the I9300UBBLG2 - ICS 4.0.4? Or do I need to update to another firmware version before going for the 4.1.1?
5. will this affect future update notifications by Samsung and Android?
Looking at these site and post we know the lastest firmware is I9300XXDLIB. Should I go with this one?
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1646610
Will be this useful to root 4.1.1? http://getmovil.com/android/galaxy-s3-root/
Last thing. OR should I wait for the 4.1.1 release to this baseband version I9300UBBLG2 ?
Take care guys and thanks for all your help.

YES
1. What Official firmware should I install?
Only one JB official the Polish release .
2. Should I change the CSC too? indicated in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1646610
If you want to or have network problems .
3. Can I install the latest Firmware from the I9300UBBLG2 - ICS 4.0.4?
You can but why //
Or do I need to update to another firmware version before going for the 4.1.1?
No
5. will this affect future update notifications by Samsung and Android?
Yes no updates
Will be this useful to root 4.1.1? http://getmovil.com/android/galaxy-s3-root/
Use root from XDA only see the INDEX.
Last thing. OR should I wait for the 4.1.1 release to this baseband version I9300UBBLG2 ?
It will not be released its ICS .

Thanks for your reply JJEgan
so to make a complete picture we got.
1. I can install JB 4.1.1 Official Firmware Polish Release.
2. I don't have to change the CSC. That must remain untouched.
3. Why will this affect future updates if it is a Official Firmware used on a Factory unlocked I9300? so I won't ever get updates for bug fixes and improvements? How will I handle that?
And
4. JB is supposed to be released on the international Galaxy S3. Why do you say it's never coming to my baseband? being this a international factory unlocked.
5. I've seen too many people in the forum having issues installing JB in their Galaxy S3 like battery drain, Wi-Fi issues etc. That's why question #3. Will i have these issues too with no bug fix updates?
Thanks

Same way as you are now updating via XDA .
And
4. JB is supposed to be released on the international Galaxy S3.
It is being rolled out .
Why do you say it's never coming to my baseband?
Baseband is nothing to do with firmware .

Your choice make your mind up wait for official update for your phone and as you don't understand the basics that may be best .
Or read and learn and flash stock rom from XDA ,

Thank again for your help, I don't want to bother you, but you make me feel confused.
First you told me that JB 4.1.1 "will not be released its ICS ."
But you do not clarify Why this official firmware from Samsung does affect future updates. I mean the Reason. WHY?
And then you do not answers my question and just told me "Your choice make your mind up wait for official update for your phone and as you don't understand the basics that may be best ." even when you said before "will not be released its ICS ."
If there is something else i should know please point me in the right direction, i just want to know and learn more to be sure before installing because it doesn't make sense installing JB if you wont ever get updates from Samsung or android for bug fixes and improvement updates.
Sorry if I'm bothering you, don't take it personal.
Repeat you need to read and learn .
Update path official via Kies or OTA OK .
No problem whenever the update is released for your phone you get it .
Alternative via XDA and flash stock rom on day of release no waiting or custom rom .
Example official JB you let us say six weeks wait .
XDA has stock JB released for Poland you can install that .
But you may then lose your official upgrade path as the codes no longer match as you do not have official firmware for your phone .
First you told me that JB 4.1.1 "will not be released its ICS >> no sorry you are confused .
Official Kies and OTA upgrades are not part of XDA .
BASICS SGS3 I9300 International Only .

SGS2 Update Failed. HELP PLEASE

Hello, lovly xda-Members and Supporters,
I'll start so my mother and I use the same smartphone - Samsung Galaxy SII GT-I9100 ...
When she came back home from work and she told me that there is an update for this, I was blown away,
I was looking through the manual setting on the phone for an update, but it said: No update available ...
So, all well and good, then I tried to update via Samsung Kies, Samsung Kies now says to me: Software update via Samsung Kies is not supported by your device ...
I Did something really silly the other day as i flashed a rom to my Galaxy S2 i9100 and i stupidly forgot to back up my stock firmware.
Is there a possibility to get my old firmware again?
I live in Germany.
& I'd love to have this update on my phone.
Each answer is helpful and I thank you once in advance!

You most definitely can return to stock, but if you didn't back up whatever data you had before flashing the new ROM, then they're gone (assuming you wiped before flashing). You'll find all the firmwares you want here:
http://www.sammobile.com/
I'm assuming that you had ICS before flashing the custom ROM, because you said you didn't receive an update, so you can most definitely do that OR, you can manually flash the update you didn't receive yet, which is 4.1.2 JB Anyway, all firmwares are there
Viel Glück

it was for 4.1.2 JB ? my phone is actually 4.0.4, it was allways 4.0.4, so it isn't for my phone anyway ? where can i find stock everything for my phone ? on Sammobile it shows me Taiwan 4.1.2 ...
PS ; Your German ?
In case you still need ICS, Then I'd suggest you google for that. Just search for samsung galaxy S2 4.0.4 firmware. you should find it. It's also helpful if you add your service providor (O2, T-Mobile or any other) just to make sure the phone will work with that network. It's just safer that way
I don't know if we're allowed to post links to outside sources here, but it's enough to say that many German android forums have what you want you just need to search really well
