Probably fastest, power down nt, remove sdcard, place in pc, and copy. I sometimes use dropbox to transfer files to and from nt. How long depends on which way you use and connection speed if you ota.
Good Luck!
Lars for tobdaryl
there are also numerous ways to transfer between the two ota directly if you are inclined but certainly much slower than sdcard.

yes of course id do this if i had a sd card reader i mean ota. what is the best way, thanks

Google Drive
I use Google Drive. I hvae 5gb of online storage. The speed depends on your upload speed. It should be sufficient enough depending on how many files you're transferring.

People use dropbox, ubuntu one, google drive, etc The issue there is you transfer to and then from doubling your time.
wifi file explorer works for me and you just use your browser on pc ( i got the pro version when it was free-maybe getJar still has it free)
otherwise market for standard or $0.99 for pro in play google.
this assumes both units on same wifi network - in not please give us more info to work with

Use ES File Explorer and connect to the PC shared drive.

No USB file transfer with Mac

I can't believe you can't sync or transfer files via usb. Someone please tell me I'm wrong because I've been googling for an hour and looks like the transfer program from asus is for pc only. I can use dropbox for smaller files but video transfers are going to be a pain. Any ideas?

There's no reason to have to use a transfer program. Just mount as SD device
ASUS probably expects Mac users to be using a iPad.

Care to explain how? It doesn't mount as an SD device, or give the option to do that. It shows up as using MTP, like the Galaxy Tab.

Android file transfer has a file size limit! What the heck? Any ideas on transferring large files?

Internal Storage is pissing me off

Transferring files using USB is too slow. Even on a 3mb mp3 it asks if I want to copy it because it might not be usable. I press ok and it takes another 20 seconds to copy. So I copied 3gb (took about 15 minutes) of music over to the internal hd and then I get a strange error. I close the window and reopen the drive and see that all the music I just transferred is completely gone. WTF IS GOING ON?!?!
I'm getting so many errors accessing the internal drive, creating folders, and copying files. It's almost as if the internal 32gb is useless... I can't use it unless I want to wait 27 minutes to transfer a 1.5gb movie...
Someone reported the same with accessing microSD from USB connection.
Do you get any pop ups on the computer saying that "This device can perform faster if plugged into a USB 2.0 port"?
Also, can I suggest doing a local file transfer over the WiFi?
it's all due to MTP. it is the transfer protocol of the devil.
why google decided this is what their devices should use from 3.x onwards is beyond me.
google's company motto should really be "one step forward, fifteen steps back."

It's so they can unify app storage with data, apparently:
With the unified storage model we introduced in Honeycomb, we share your full 32GB (or 16GB or whatever) between app data and media data. That is, no more staring sadly at your 5GB free on Nexus S when your internal app data partition has filled up -- it's all one big happy volume.
However the cost is that Android can no longer ever yield up the storage for the host PC to molest directly over USB. Instead we use MTP. On Windows (which the majority of users use), it has built-in MTP support in Explorer that makes it look exactly like a disk. On Linux and Mac it's sadly not as easy, but I have confidence that we'll see some work to make this better.

Although I suppose there's no reason they couldn't offer a special Mass Storage mode that locks out running programs. The link also suggests that the external microSDHC card should support mass storage? I don't have a HC/ICS device to know yet, though.
This whole storage "issu" is so not a big deal at all.
It's that way on every honeycomb tablet and it works okay overall.
Sure maybe it's gonna take a while the first time to transfere all your content to your empty device but once all your **** is inside, you don't use it that much and never for such a big amount of data.
The thing with Android is that you can actually directly download the stuff you want on your tablet, no need to plug it into your computer 95% of the time.
^^
which begs the next question,
How easy is it to set up file transfer over the network between Prime and a Windows PC?
Setting up a network with a windows PC is hard, whatever the other device is.
But aside that I'm pretty sure it's fairly easy. And I think Asus software (myNet) can help you do this (never tried)

On my desktop PC I have a directory browser setup on my PC that I use any device that accepts IPs as input.
It's a Window's feature that has to be installed separately.
Internet Information Services
I use ES file explorer on N1. I connected it to my Windows PC over wi-fi once and it remembers it. I usually copy files back and forth using my phone only. It is pretty handy.
On prime, I have just installed it but not used it to transfer files, so cant comment on the speed.
DropBox if you're using Windows, SparkleShare if you're not.

+1. After my Prime charging cable fell apart when i tried to unplug it, I had to resort to network transfers and ES file explorer did the job rather painlessly. The only little hurdle I had to jump over, and this might have been user-error on my part, but it asked for a username and password to the machine I was trying to connect to. So I had to add a password to my user account which previously did not have one to get it to connect.
Same here. ES file explorer is great stuff. Just put in the needed IP address for your PC + username/password for the user account, and it gets you in and loads directories pain-free.
I don't intend on connecting my Prime to my PC until a one-click root is in the works =)

Because transfer over WiFi + ES has been significantly faster with every Android device I've ever connected to my laptop.

NICE! Using SwiFTP now and it transfers a lot faster than before. Thanks
Easiest way I found was, pop the MicroSD in my PC load it up. Pop it in the prime, use a file explorer and move it over fast and easy.

[Q] Fastest way to transfer files?

Phone to tablet, laptop to tablet, tablet to desktop whatever.
Wi-fi? Bluetooth? Usb stick? Sd card?
None of those options seems readily fast.
I typically transfer all files using ftp over wifi. It's the "quickest" in my personal opinion. But the overall speed also depends on what you are transferring and the speed of your network.
SD Card if you have a class 10 ought to be good, except for having to do it twice. I usually use SMB/CIFS or scp.

I don't get it how that's fast at all.
So if I want to transfer from my desktop to my tablet via Dropbox. I upload to Dropbox at 500 kbps then download on the tablet at 12mbps. I don't see how that's faster than a Wi-fi transfer at 300mbps.
A better Q is whether or not the Android client has the LAN support the desktop clients do.

I don't know what your expecting or hoping for as you should already know the limits of all possible methods & none are hella fast. Dropbox may not be the speed you want but it is very very convenient
Try Tornido. It is like a dropbox client but lets you access your local files on your computer. Amazing program.

ES File Explorer seems to do the trick for me.
I've heard USB transfers on hear are pretty slow and it doesn't give the speed during the transfer like on Windows. Same with Bluetooth.
I guess I don't get it, Dropbox seems like the least convenient and slowest to me.
Yeah I have folders of TV shows and each folder is 15Gb roughly. Dropbox is not gonna work. Dropbox is awesome for the random file/picture but not for transferring large amounts. The free account is only about 2GB of space so it wouldn't work well at all for movies/tv shows.
I have a 32GB microsd card I leave in all the time. I transfer files to that from my desktop, which is where I have all my goods, using a USB card reader. I haven't tried transferring from the card to internal yet though so I cannot comment on how fast that will be.
A program called SwiFTP seems to be a wifi solution people are happy with,. I haven't tried it.
Some of you need to check out AirDroid. 7000 downloads and 5 stars - that is rare. It is a badass app and I can transfer any file size to and from phone, tablet, computer, etc. And the GUI is crazy awesome. You can backup and transfer anything and it even allows for saving of MMS, ringtones, notifications, pictures, apps.
That's a pretty slick app. Definitely worth the 5 stars. So easy to use.

Dropbox beta - 5 gigs free on top of the initial 2 gigs

So just a heads up for everyone that uses dropbox or wants to start using dropbox, they are offering you up to 5 free gigs for using their new automatic camera upload feature on their beta software. The link for the desktop version of dropbox: http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=53104&replies=718
I believe they just came out with an android app as well where you can also get 5 free gigs (combined total though not 5 from desktop and 5 from android)
All you have to do is have some sort of external hard drive or sd card and have some .jpg files on there. You get 500 free megs for every 500 you upload for a max of 5 gigs.
Some tips:
1) If you already have a dropbox account with pictures of any file on there, you can just copy them from your dropbox folder to the sd card (CHANGE ANY NON-JPG EXTENSIONS TO JPG). That way when dropbox goes to find pictures and starts uploading, you will actually be syncing the files and not uploading (since those files are already in your account/cloud). You'll still get the 5 gigs as long as you let dropbox automatically upload pictures. You can delete the files afterwards.
2) Download this fake image zip (https://s3.amazonaws.com/picturesharing/fakeimages.tar.bz2) It's basically 17k zip file worth of jpg files but bloated so it actually reads 5 gigs. Now you can unzip the .tar.bz2 and unzip it again until you get a folder with jpgs (so unzip twice since it's a zip within a zip). Put these fake images onto your SD card, unmount the SD card, and load the SD card again (or USB drive). Dropbox will search for images when you plug in the sd card and will sync the jpgs.
From my own experience, just let the jpgs sync to your Camera Upload folder and you'll get the bonus space. You're not actually uploading 5gigs worth of jpgs because it's actually 17kb so don't you worry if you have slow upload speeds (like me).
3) If for some reason dropbox doesn't find the jpgs, try making a folder called DCIM and putting the jpgs in that folder.
If you don't have dropbox, it's a great way to save files and share on the cloud! You can sign up at dropbox.com or you can get another 250mb of free space by signing up as my referral, which I would love! my referral link is: http://db.tt/a4mt2G6
Enjoy!
I downloaded & installed v1.3.13 but cannot see any way to sync any portable devices - am I missing something?

Don't forget, TouchPad owners get a free 50GB account from Box.com (used to be .net) - you just have to sign up from withing webOS.
2GB and even 5GB just sounds so dinky.
Worked like a charm!!!! Thanks.
dwl99 after you insert your usb stick (if you have disabled the autoplay feature) you have to right click on it and choose import photos using dropbox and it should work great.

That is true. The Box.com deal is better but it is also good to have a Dropbox account with storage space if you use Titanium Backup.
Follow the link provided in the first post and download the windows client. I used this dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/Dropbox%201.3.13.exe
Box may have larger space, but you only have a 100mb file size limit. Dropbox the only limit you have is your total space.

Dropbox or.... Sugar Sync!
Hi thanks for that, the normal (free) dropbox size could always do with being bigger! I was amazed when I found out and signed up for box.net's free 50gb but found it to be garbage. The 25mb file limit (well sound's like it's now 100mb from your posts) was prohibitive for files that would actually make use of 50gb and the lack of desktop sync (unless you are a business customer) also combined to make it pointless of me.
Genuinely not trying to sound too salesman-like but.. I recently started using sugar sync. It's 5gb free vs 2gb with dropbox. And it has no file size limit (like box.net). And it has desktop sync (like dropbox). And you can sync *any* folders on your computer with a right click context menu (better than dropbox where they all have to be in dropbox folder). And any pics or music you sync can then be streamed to any mobile android/ios etc device via their app (cos often that right click is easier than connecting & uploading). It's more spacious, easy and powerful in my experience so far. And you can select your dropbox folder as one to sync giving you double cloud backup protection and easing the transition if you want to switch!
I still use dropbox cos that's what I'm used to but I'm thinking of dropping it soon. If you're interested in giving it a try, PM me your email and I'll send you an invite which will give us both an extra 0.5gb on top of the 5gb you normally get. (And another advantage - there's no limit to how much space you can get via recommendations! unlike dropbox...). Yes I am shamelessly trying to increase my sugar sync storage but I do genuinely find it better and so might you and you'll get another 0.5gb too.
i dont think it increased it to the max.... cause now i only have 6.75 amount of space not 7.25
I'm at 11.7gb from referrals, using the jpg zip i can still get another 5?

edit: im an idiot
Thanks for the fake pics. This worked perfectly!
This is weird. I have installed Dropbox 1.3.13 o2 2 different Win7 64-bit and 1 WinXP computers. I have tried the fake jpg's on a USB stick and a microSD card and also tried putting the jpg's inside a DCIM folder but Dropbox still looks exactly the same as before. When I right-click the Dropbox taskbar icon there is no option to sync the DCIM folder. If I right-click the DCIM folder or the USB/SD card there is also no option to do anything with Dropbox. Surely I'm missing something really obvious???
EDIT - I just enabled Autoplay on the SD card on the WinXP machine & it now gives an option to sync when the card is reinserted.
EDIT again - just got it working on the Win7 PC - I needed to enable Autoplay for pictures, reinsert the USB stick, right click on the drive and then select Autoplay & then Dropbox sync.
Thanks for the tip.I recently signed up for Dropbox and is pretty awesome compared to others like box.com which offers 50GB of free is you use certain device. And what a horrible experience it was....what is the point of having all that space if the features are so limited so Dropbox has loyal customer. Thanks to the OP for the tip and to Dropbox.
Thanks for this. I also got capped at 6.75 even though i had a couple referrals. Still more than I had.

Basically you transfer files like you would to a flash drive.
1. You plug your prime into your computer
2. open it on your computer(look for it like you would look for a flashdrive, if on windows a window might pop up. If it does click "view files" or something)
3. Transfer files by drag/dropping or copy/pasting.
This is the most basic way to directly transfer files. There are many other ways to transfer files such as wireless transfer, but those get a lot more complex.
Hope this helps and if you do want to try one of the other ways just ask and I'll try to help.
Hi cmat
Thank you for your prompt response, i will try it and keep u posted.
I clicked the thanks button for you.
>iTunes
*snigger*
Its just because you don't know how to yet. This is way simpler and faster than iTunes. I know because I have an Ipad also. Its as easy as copy n paste or dragging the files onto prime. Or as simple as transferring from memory to internal memory if you want.
Like me I like to download movies n such straight from the websites. I have the new Underworld movie inside my Prime now
