Upgrading to ics - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Tried a quick search but got overwhelmed with the info
I've had my gs2 since launch and I rooted it and run check checkrom v6 at the moment. I want to upgrade to ics but unsure which way to go as there is a lot of conflicting info
Any advice would be appreciated

You just need to decide if you want a stock or a custom ROM.
As your running checkrom you're obviously not a stranger to flashing ROMs so just do a bit of research into some and flash.
Make a back using clockwork mod and if you want to go back to your old set up you can
A few custom ROMs to try are:
Ressurection Remix
Slim ICS
Elite Rom
Cyanogenmod 9

Will probably try cyanogenmod.
Is it pretty much just flash through cmw as before?
sent from my fat little fingers

I would suggest rootbox. There is an ICS version and a JB, which is actually really stable

Thanks for the reply
This is where I got confused lol so is root box the new cwm? Or do I use cmw to flash root box then use root box to flash an ics rom?
I'm getting to old for all this

Rootbox is an version of ICS. You use cwm to flash Rootbox (an ics rom)

Yes, that is all it is about. Make a nandroid backup first. Then wipe it clean, cache and data, and then flash whatever ROM you choose.
I can relate to your problem, s2 seriously has a lot of ROMs so try them and stick with that which YOU like personally. If you want you can try CM9 only first or any other. Just go to that ROM's thread and they mention how to flash in the OP.

Why? There's so many people like this on xda who say this, but when I asked the Devs, its not even necessary or doesn't help.
I never ever flashed an ics rom and I went straight from stock gb to custom ics without a problem.

Hey ^^ I'm guessing from your post that your phone has not been rooted yet, correct?
If that is the case, you will first want to root your device using this app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953 (I think its easiest)
Or you can follow the directions in this nifty thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
Once you're rooted...I would suggest following the directions in the thread I posted above. Go DL titanium backup, backup all your apps. Download Rom manager and make sure you have a CWM installed. Then browse through our rom section and get yourself on Froyo to start. We have some awesome development for Froyo at the moment, and I would suggest you go with one by fishman0919 such as: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1769424
Be sure to read the "Noob Guide" that I posted thoroughly and come back and ask if you don't understand something.
Good luck!
I'm guessing we don't want to start down the Kies road. Just in case no one else warns you, don't touch Kies. I hard bricked my phone a few months ago using Kies after having used Odin umpteen times. Luckily Sammy was nice enough to replace my PCB for no cost. They probably won't be doing that for much longer, though. Stay safe and follow the steps in Xenoism's post.

Yes, as mentioned here. Don't go anywhere near Kies. Your phone will die.

You can definitely run ICS or GB.
I personally suggest ICS since many GB roms are buggy and are no longer being supported.
If you want to jump up to ICS you will have to first flash this rom to your phone: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/get/jenkins/5269/cm-7-20120729-NIGHTLY-vibrantmtd.zip
Once you have this flashed, you can flash whichever ICS rom you want.
Remember when flashing any rom to do a full wipe. This is:
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache (under advanced)
and then flash your rom
Good luck!

Here here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1464423
Give him some props!
Thanks for the nod Xeno.
One thing for the OP to remember. Some GB ROMs require Gingerbread Bootloaders, as do *some* ICS ROMs. You will need to check the OPs of those ROMs that you are going to want to flash to see. If you cannot connect to a computer or as your OP states you don't own a computer, you will NOT be able to flash Gingerbread Bootloaders to your phone.
They are not CMW flashable and just flashing a CM7 ROM does NOT give you GB bl's. Only in Odin can you flash GB bl's. Just something to take into consideration.

But even more so, your thread is far more helpful to the OP than the instructions that I've given...and I'd

> need help before i risk flasing my first rom <

This is my first post and i was wondering if people could answer some questions i have.
First off heres my phones specs
Samsung galaxy s2
Model number
GT-I9100
Android version
4.0.3
Baseband version
I9100XXLPQ
Kernel version
3.0.15-I9100XXLPQ-CL223505
[email protected] #3
Build number
IML74K.XXLPQ
I've rooted my phone using rachmat3 method and thats how far i've got because only just got phone as a gift and im scared to flash a new rom incase i brick my phone.
Is it safe to use the cwm.zip to flash a rom that i used from rachmat3 root method or do i need a updated version of cwm?
Can someone recommend a fully working paranoid android rom that i can use for daily use?
Which kernel would be best to use with paranoid android rom?
Should i flash a kernel before i flash a rom?
If i install paranoid android rom would i then have a permanant cwm on my device or would i still need to use my temporery cwm.zip?
What is the chances of me bricking my phone?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Flash what ever rom u want till its for GT-I9100
No need to worry
Just read the specific rom instructions carefully
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Yes mate now u can flash any Rom ....Just read the instruction before flashing
I would advise you to flash a safe kernel first before doing any wipe and flashing any roms. Siyah is a safe bet.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
1. Download ROM Manager and you'll be able to flash any ROMs you wish using that.
2. All the PA versions are working fine, so just browse through and choose for yourself.
3. Asking questions like that is against forum rules because they often lead to arguments. The best advice is just to download and flash different kernels and stick with which ever one you're happy with.
4. It really doesn't matter in which order you flash them. The result is still the same. I personally always flash the ROM first, but it doesn't make a difference.
5. If you use ROM Manager, as mentioned previously, even if you have to do a full wipe when flashing a different ROM, it doesn't matter because you can simply download it again anyway. Or just save it to your SD card.
6. The changes if bricking your phone are higher if you're worried about it. Just be sure to read all instructions given about installation and follow them perfectly and you'll be fine.
If after reading about flashing ROMs you are still worried, then you're better off waiting for a bit until you've done more research into what exactly is needed.
I'm a product of the system I was born to destroy!
Thanks for your replys.
just follow the steps mentioned and follow some video (like on youtube) and it'll be easy!

Most ROM zips include kernels, so if somebody wants to stay with the same kernel, then it's necessary to flash custom kernel again.

You will need a pc if for example you flash a kernel and somethings not right. You cant get cwm, only download mode.

No, you can't flash a ICS ROM over a JB ROM. You can either restore an ICS backup then flash the ICS ROM you want or you can return to stock GB or ICS using Odin than reroot, flash an ICS ROM, etc. I always keep a stock ICS nandroid on my phone so if I want to flash an ICS ROM, I just restore it then flash what I want.

To the OP - YES u can flash any rom u want from recovery, be it gingerbread, ice cream sandwich or jellybean. Just do a full wipe of your data cache and system partitions in recovery before flashing the new rom.

If you already have CWM recovery why not use CWM to flash a custom 4.1.2 rom thats based on Stock firmware (like Android Revolution HD)?
Thats just as easy, has more support, rooted and you'll have future updates faster as well.
I already downloaded omega v34 but didn't flash it because people have lot of issues with it.. Lag, random reboot etc. Stock rom will be more stable I guess..
I haven't tried revolution though...
I'll try it now..

I already downloaded omega v34 but didn't flash it because people have lot of issues with it.. Lag, random reboot etc. Stock rom will be more stable I guess..
I haven't tried revolution though...
I'll try it now..
Any other rom you recommend?

I had the same experience, Omega had loads of launcher redraws and sudden lag. No such experience on ARHD with Perseus kernel. That kernel now even has the exynos exploit fixed.
Nope, all other roms i've tried i never used more then a few hours.
Can you give me a link to the ARHD page?
Thanks!

Yeah, everytime you flash the stock image, you'll have to root the phone again... but so what?? I have my mobile sine 8 weeks and i think i flashed it 10times now, and lots of custom-rom installations, configuring the phone etc....
It's not a hard work, you just have to read carefully BEFORE you start rooting, modding or whatever. This forum is awesome and till now i really found an answer to my questions everytime without bothering the ither guys with a question that is already answered a thousand times just have to use the search... so, good luck and have fun with your rooted mobile. By the way, i recommend the Omega-ROM for galaxy S2 and S3, the guys are.doing a great job with their ROMs. If you own a S3 LTE (i9305) i recommend the Pandoriam ROM, works best for me
Best regards

Haha.. Thanks buddy.
Btw, I am not new to rooting, I have flashed at least 15 rom's on my old phone(galaxy ace)
But I was not a member of XDA then.. I just used to read....
But since s3 is much more expensive I wanted to be absolutely clear about the smallest of things...
Because with great power comes great responsibility.

Help flashing Jellybam jb 4.2.1 status 7 error

Im using the Siyah-I777-v7.6.4-S kernal and did the norm whipe and all the cachs and such downloaded the rom 3-4 times on pc on phone directly and still get the error no matter what any help would be great thanks if you can tell me what kernel you are useing with this rom and were to get it thanks.
you have posted in the wrong section for one. to get rid of that error you need to odin back to stock and then root it and have cwm. then flash again. no other way of doing it. you could have asked in the jellybam thread. it has already been stated how to do it.

It's an error with the build prop. When I went from JellyBam to Avatar ROM I had the same issue. I fixed the build prop, and deleted the assert in the updater script

Might be a dumb question but is that the same kernel that came with thw rom? I had to wipe my phobe last night and reinstall an old rom to get a new one on there because I tried using a different kernel and I started getting a boot loop

Wouldn't be, that kernel was made by AJ for Sammy JB ROMs.

so i can using the same kernel i installed get hte shosock rom to work but i can not get this one to work i even reinstalled the task650 aokp rom and then did the whip and all that and still can not this rom to install my problem and the reason im going from the task 650 rom to a different one is battery life with the task650 my battery would drop like a percent a min and was killing me i want to have a JB 4.2.1 rom would like the multi window option like shoshock rom but i love the aokp stuff so any other rom options with kernals would be wonderful or mods but currently im got the sohshock rom on it 4.2.1 NS WILL GIVE IT A TRY FOR A WILE AND SEE HOW THAT WORKS i dont think im going to stay with it thow cus there not that much to change to customize .
This does not belong in the development section. Continue the conversation through PM and ask a dev to move it to q&a.

That is not correct. It is made for CM based ROMs and made to work on Samsung JB ROMs as a plus.
And this is in the wrong section.....please move this to the Q&A section.

No I just didn't want anyone reading it to get confused and think it is for Samsung only .
This thread will either be moved or closed soon.
