Hey,
I'm running on CM7. Can the brightness on the phone be set lower than the slider-bar allows? I'm often inside dark rooms and would prefer the brightness to be at a lower level. I know the phone can be less bright, because when you turn Desk Clock mode on (from within the Clock App) it set the screen to a super-low brightness. I was wondering if I can have that brightness for normal use.

settings > cm settings > display > automatic backlight > use custom / edit other levels
not sure what settings would accomplish this, or if it is even possible - but those are the settings you are looking for.
I have -no- idea what the settings do, or how to enable it at all. I tried setting everything to the lowest it goes to (2) but it did nothing... Hmm.
Look for "screen filter" app in the market.

Won't this just set a "filter" on top of the screen, making it darker? It won't really affect the actual backlight, will it? I was hoping to both make the screen darker, and save a bit of battery. Don't know how screen work, just what I think is happening.
According to the description and some users it saves battery on amoled screens...but I haven't tested it...you could be right.

I believe the effect in the desk clock is essentially the same as Screen Filter. It just darkens it. Just like Desk Clock on the Captivate, evident because the status bar stays the same brightness but the clock lowers. That's why the CM7 app makes the status bar disappear, so the app can darken itself and you won't notice it's darker because it doesn't affect the system and the status bar would have stayed the same brightness. Screen filter is a wonderful option. I had it to "hold menu button" in CM7 settings.

I don't think AMOLED screens have a backlight, that's why they're LED and not LCD.
I have the same problem: at night, the screen is too bright. Cyanogen has an option to only display one of the 3 primary colors, so you can turn on only the red subpixels. Sure, you are left with a monochrome screen, but it is dim and uses less power.
Thinking of getting the GS2 or GS2 Skyrocket, but when I went to an AT&T store I observed tbat when you bring up the browser and go to google and then click the menu, the white area gets brighter, when you dismiss the menu, the white area gets dim (Almost seems like a lack of power issue)
It was very pronounced.
I did disable auto-brightness in settings
I did set brightness to full in browser settings also.
Is this a fluke or just a side effect of AMOLED screens
I tried this on 2 units they had running at the store.
There's auto brightness, but there's also the Analyze screen and adjust to save power. Did you get both?
Wow, I did not know about that setting and it may be cause of the effect I saw.

I use auto as it doesn't affect my battery much needed screen look nicer when it's brighter. But there r pple tat use lowest brightness settings for battery savings reason

I don't. It drain's my battery more than manual settings. Slide your finger over notification area to adjust brightness manually.
I'm on MIUI so I can change from the notification bar. It depends, if I'm charging I'll have full brightness to show off the sexy SAmoled+ display. But if I'm out and trying to conserve battery I'll have it on auto.

Use quick settings via notification, hate brightness changing all time so its all way down except when need to up brightness manually.

Off. Main reason is to conserve battery. Most of the time super amoled plus display is bright enough even when close to lowest brightness. Like the others said there's a shortcut to manually increase the brightness through sliding the notification bar when needed say for example outdoors.

I just can't unblock my handset when I'm out (thanks to australian sun) - I see nothing on the screen.

Off and almost always at maximum brightness. When using it in the dark (when I should be sleeping) I lower the brightness via the notification bar shortcut (that also works when the screen is locked using WidgetLocker).
No. Manual adjust is easy and more satisfying.

Im using auto.....because home is not like outdoor.....if i make it at the lowest i wont see any thing in the outdoor.......i have it on because it stimulate the sun and the low light condition.....plus .. i dont care about the battery...i bought the phone to use it and enjoy it not to sit and watch the battery all day long and keeping myself from enjoying this coool phone...........

Always off, adjust the brightness level where you suit.

Yes, what that feature does is that it adjust the brightness depending on the color currently displayed on the screen. With that feature on everything looks dark, and dim. Turn the feature off and watch everything look bright and vibrant, and for more "oomph" change the screen mode to "dynamic". Gorgeous colors.

I wonder how much effect it has on the battery I get more than enough battery out of 1 day of use so I figure why not enhance the phone

Just got the V10 and the second screen dims after 2 or 3 seconds after turning off the main screen. Is there a way to adjust the timing when the second screen dims? The dimmed second screen is almost unreadable because it is so dim.
Ditto, the idea that this is a replacement for a notification LED is really damaged by the dimming. (It's not just me that bought the phone based on that idea, right?) What I've found so far:
With the screen brightness set to 0, the second screen dims fully a few seconds after sleeping. Icons become about as noticeable as dust reflections.
With the screen brightness set to 100, the second screen follows the ambient light sensor after sleeping. Under bright light it turns itself up to the point where it's useable.
I've been playing with all the LEDs that Light Flow sees, but at least without root, nothing has any effect. I might look through the /sys files later. We probably need to get root first to figure this out.
On auto brightness it seems to be that the device adjusts the dimmed display for the ambient lighting? It's not the easiest thing in the world to see, but it's certainly not hard for me to see what notifications I have. I really prefer this over a colored LED.
Light Flow settings
For what it's worth, here's my current setup, now that the T-Mobile H901 is rooted. This does no one without root any good, and I don't know how it would translate to similar LED managers. I've been using Light Flow since the Sapphire (MyTouch 3G).
Light Flow device settings: check direct mode, root mode, and run every command as root. The Nexus 5 force reset option is checked by default and I don't know if that's relevant (no calls yet). Everything else in the menu is unchecked.
Let Light Flow control lcd-backlight-ex.
In a notification, set that "LED" to Solid and to 255 brightness. Check Enable Mixer and App controlled flash. With that last setting, the app will reset the brightness every few seconds even if the system dimmed it due to an ambient light change.
Now I need to edit some notification icons to be big and colorful. I wonder how this will impact battery life? Now the app is going to be awake all the time.
I've noticed that today on auto brightness the second screen will increase in light but not much. It also is not as smoth of a transition as on main display. It kinda jumps up real quick..
Yes for me I've noticed on Auto brightness the second screen will dim in a dark room and if you turn off your phone while in that room then come out... The second screen is still dim.... It's like th second screen doesn't respond to the light sensors at all unless the main screen is on.

Another one of many things that it would be cool to see baked into a custom stock rom. Good stuff. I wonder if Cloudyfa might come over and cook on this awhile. I have always loved his stock Roms....

Color would be cool. A classic CRT bright/lime green, for instance, would probably show up much better than the white.
We need to get on their forums with these ideas. Maybe some will get squeezed into an update
An app which turns off auto dim in case screen is off would be pretty much help. Maybe I'll develop one.
