[TEST][SENSE] Those with WiFi issues check this! - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

From personal experience on a sense rom WiFi drops in and out regularly even though my router is fine and every other device connected to it is fine. It is annoying as it always happens to drop when I need data such as when I'm browsing Google+ or need to search something on Google Now. WiFi drops, 3G connects, 3G disconnects, WiFi connects, all of that creates about a 5 second wait time which is NOT negligible.
Anyway, I started reading up on what manages the WiFi connections in Android, and more specifically Sense because I don't get this issue whatsoever on CM10. I may have found the possible verdict as I successfully no longer get WiFi drops and it stays constantly connected to my access point.
What I found was that the default settings.apk from sense is what manages the WiFi connections so I decided to stick in a stock AOSP settings.apk file in there in its' stead to see if that helped. It did greatly help, and on top of that on all settings screens such as app info screens and app instalation screens I get the AOSP look that I love. It really does complete any 'sense-less' ROM.
So without further ado, I have attatched the stock settings.apk with a few mods to make it work on sense flawlessly. Please make your /system partition writeable and overwrite the sense settings.apk in /system/app/ with the one attatched. Please let me know if this works for you guys too. For reporting make sure to put your ROM version in.

Do the permissions need to be changed?

Works perfectly. Thank you.

Can someone please explain how to do this, including what app to use for the permission changes? I'm really not comfortable with file managing apps and switching out system files yet. But I really want to try this out, mostly to complete my vanilla android look and feel.

Maybe I'm just missing it, but i dont see option in About Phone to update PRL, Profile.
Im i blind?
Edit: just like AOSP roms, you can't update them. My mistake.

It doesnt have those options I'm afraid. As for the permissions, learn something and use google

Cool, nice job man. This is the first I've seen of the AOSP menus, very cool. I'm looking forward to CM10 even more now. I wasn't having any wifi issues, but I liked the sound of having a little touch of AOSP to hold me over until an official release is out.
I used ES file explorer on Viper4G (you may wanna make a nandroid first):
1. Launch ES, open menu, go into settings
2. Make sure Up To Root, Root Explorer and Mount File System are enabled
3. Browse to the download location of the apk in the OP
4. Copy the apk
5. Browse to /system/app
6. Paste the apk and confirm overwrite
7. Reboot phone

Interesting. I had the same Wi-Fi cycling issues on cm10 8/1 build as I did in sense roms... I'll have to give this a try...

Tried using this with MeanROM 2.9 and Nova Launcher. Settings menu wouldn't come up for me at all.

Thank you very much, I'm gonna try this later! I learn from trying things hands on, and this will help get me started.
I'm on Viper4G as well. De-sensed. I can't think of any bit of Sense that will be visible... Other than maybe the icons in the status bar. I'm sure those are theme-able to ICS look too... I'll have to look into that!

You bet...you can download AOSP status bar icons through the Venom hub and then apply them in the Venom tweaks menu. I personally prefer the stock icons though because they are a bit more crisp looking.

To those with wifi issues. If you have sense, go to wifi settings choose frequency then change to 2.4 ghz.

Hey Art2Fly, I would suggest you either make a new thread or change the title of this one... This is a pretty big deal outside of the WiFi issue! I am more excited about the AOSP styled settings menu! That's pretty significant, and I would imagine that all the devs making non-Sense ROMs will be baking this into their ROM. Nice job - I love the new look!
Premo - I totally agree on the ICS theme... Not quite polished enough for me yet. So close to pure AOSP without having AOSP... Haha. It's really impressive how much Sense they removed.

That's strange. Yeah, factory reset won't help because that clears the data and cache partitions only, but this modification is to the system partition. You could try downloading a Sense based rom (like Mean, Clean, Fresh, etc.), open up the zip file and pull the settings.apk out of there to replace the one you've got now...it should be the same as the one you had originally. Did you do a nandroid backup first?

First, I would like to thank Wolfeyes30 for sending me here. Thanks!
I'm visually impaired and this settings.apk is absolutely freaking fantastic! Thanks so much Art2Fly, this is really really sweet.
I can't comment on the impact on wifi yet, as I just installed at work.
Currently on MeanROM 2.8
4x4 Rosie 360 Landscape
Running deSensed .07
Pushed to /system/app using ES Esplorer
Renamed original settings.apk (added .bak) & saved for later use
Original .apk permissions were rw-r--r--
Set permissions on Art's settings.apk
Rebooted
Profited
Goes without saying...nand'd before this process started.
Thanks so much Wolf & Art!

CM7 ROM & restoring apps

I recently flashed CM7 6.5.8 to my Optimus T (P-509)...it's really impresive. Anyway, the one thing I really liked (functionally & aesthetically) on the stock ROM is the Connection Manager that allows you to activate a data connection as well as monitor if wi-fi is being used or 3G data. It is true that CM7 provides this same functionality with the Power Controls widget...I just like the stock version more. Unfortunately, when I restore the stock Connection Manager via Titanium Backup, it doesn't seem to fully restore. For instance, placing the Connection Manager widget on my home screen only displays the title of the widget and nothing else. Clicking said widget does allow me to make my connection but the visual appeal is lacking.
Is it even possible to restore system apps/widgets to CM7 or is this a limitation of the ROM?
Thanks,
Is the widget you want called ConnectionManagerWidget.apk?if so here is the attachent.Install root explorer go to system/app mount as r/w place the ConnectionManagerWidget.apk there and change the permissions to rw-/r--/r--(if you don't know what is this look into the permissions off another app)
Thanks for the file! Seems like it should be what I want. However, do you know if it's possible to change the permissions without Root Explorer? Maybe with Terminal Emulator?
I've transfered the file to /system/app but it isn't even recoginized as a widget option. At least when I restored the original widget it appeared as an option and was semi-functional. I hate to waste money on Root Explorer if this widget won't work. I've already wasted money on Groove IP for less than stellar performance. Not that $4-$5 bucks here or there will kill me but buy enough apps that don't perform and it can add up quickly.
Regardless, thanks again.

HTC Note App?

From what I've seen on various review videos, it seems like Sprint has taken the HTC note app that is included with the international One X off the E4GLTE. Is there a way to transfer the app from a one X? Is it as simple as copying the apk file over from the other phone and installing?
should be
they are running the same android version
plus they are both sense 4.0
so yea
It should be, especially if it is on the One X.

Is there a way I can pull the apk out of an "RUU" file or ROM available from the international One X dev site?

Try pulling it out of a HTC ONE X ROM, then move it to the system/app on the HTC EVO 4G LTE and then fix permissions and reboot and it should work just fine.
Or you can try just straight up installing as a normal data app with the application installer, however I doubt it will work since it's an HTC Sense System app on the One X.

Ok, got SU access, then used ES file explorer to move the 3 .apk files to /system/app. Rebooted once. Tried tapping on them to install, but no success. How do I "fix permissions"? I see there's an app in the market for it (called "Fix Permissions") but when I open it, I don't see the apks I moved to the folder.

Try using Root Explorer. I have been using that app for years. once in the correct directory you can long press the file and a menu pops up. In that menu there is permissions option. Unfortunately you have to manually select the permissions you want, however if you look at the permissions of other apps in the same folder you can figure out what needs changed.
There are other programs where you can do a one-touch "fix permissions," but I cannot remember them off hand. If I remember I will update this post.
EDIT: Back on the EVO 3D i used Leedroid Tweaks to do a one-touch "fix permissions." Hopefully this will be updated/ported for this new device.

I have root access and tried copying the files in and changing permissions. Rebooted and the Apps still wont show up. Direct install fails as well
Tried again using root explorer - still no dice. Any ideas?
Methinks that moving those files into place and setting permissions is not enough. I was tinkering in root explorer and I believe there may be some lib files that need to be removed too. I'll check more tomorrow.
Awesome - thanks for the help. Look forward to seeing if you can get these installed.
One other thing - I noticed in system/app that many of the other apk's also have matching odex files. Could this be why I cannot install? Sorry, I recall reading somewhere about odex files and thinking that they get created during the installation process, but can't remember.
just finished porting one, its not the HTC one but still pretty good

[APP ViperRez] Htc Locations/ Footprints

For those of you running ViperRez and miss the Htc Locations;(Footprints) app from Venasaur, I have a quick solution to get it working again.
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/yxhovh7z35z9zbx/jRrZKD36JX
1. Download the zips and two folders in the link and place them on your phone
2. Flash the zips in recovery first
3. Take the files from system_app and copy them to /system/app using a file explorer(root explorer) and change the permissions to rw-r-r for all files
4. Take the files from system_lib and copy them to /system/lib using a file explorer(root explorer) and change the permissions to rw-r-r for all files
5. Reboot phone and enjoy the Htc locations app again
P.s. The reason I use Locations is because I live in a rural area without internet all the time and its nice to have offline gps maps when I go hiking and such without them expiring after 30 days like google maps, so if its not to much trouble could you put it in as an option in aroma Joelz? I'm sure others in rural areas would appreciate it as much as me. Plus your rom is the only sense 4.0 one that I've gotten Locations to work on.
can you get the HTC Twitter widget goin too?
I tried but I don't know which lib or framework files it needs to go along with the apk's, if someone else knows then I'm sure it would be just as easy as htc locations.
mine keeps telling me it cant connect to the server right after it tells me to download, retry gets the same result. Cancel leaves the program. Thos are my only options. Any ideas?

I've added "Footprints_system_files_signed.zip" to the dropbox folder, try flashing both of the zips in recovery first then replacing the system/app and system/lib files and be sure you fixed the permissions to read/write for user and read only for the other two (rw,r,r)
I added those but it still says can't connect to server for downloading location files (before the app launches). Any ideas? Maybe an alternate way to get them?

If I didn't work I have no clue as I'm not a really a developer or anything I just noticed another thread that got locations working on another phone so I just took the files needed for them to run from the team pkmn rom (since its a sense 4.0 rom for rezound that had locations working on it) put them in there right place on my phone rebooted and it worked for me. When I took the files from the other phone and tryed it didn't work and gave me the same problems your having. Silly question but your trying this in a rezound and not another phone right ? If you using a different phone you'll need to find a rom for that phone with a similar build that has locations working, pull the files from it and put them on your rom. Also some people say to install LocationsInstaller.apk but when I tryed to install it it wouldn't work so I just stuck it in system/app rebooted and the location app appeared in my launcher finally.
Also not sure if this has anything to do with it but when I was running xXx I downloaded the maps of the west and midwest to use offline, So I already had the offline data for the maps when I attempted to get this working. Also its off by about 50 feet but when I'm hiking the backcountry without internet I can live with 50 feet.
My advice would be to try and install the LocationsInstaller.apk and see if it actually installs and if it does reboot your phone and try to launch the app, if it launches it should tell you its out of date and needs to download files, let it do its thing reboot again and if all went well it should work. If it doesn't I'm out of ideas for now and maybe someone else (developer) can chime in with there thoughts.
I never intended for this to be for the community but I figured if it worked for me it might for others. If all else fails for you there's and app called "Maps (-)" in the market that appears to have offline maps and lots of customizing but to get full features you need "Maps (+)" which costs $2.99 and im a cheapskate lol. MapsWithMe also seems like a good alternative that is 100% free
Nice this got on the portal!
Hi,
I did exactly as it is in this instruction on my Desire HD with custom Jelly Android and have an error:
Unfortunately Location launcher has stopped.
Any ideas how to fix it?

[MOD] [CM10] MMS Fix (Sprint)

MMS has been extremely flakey for me on CM10. After some searching, I found some alternate APNS settings here, and tweaked the ones on the phone to work properly.
Installation directions are the same as the linked post, so full credit goes to AlpineMan for that. The only thing I did was remove the unnecessary crap from the file.
Download the APN config from here.
Install APN Backup & Restore.
Convert the "APN Backup & Restore" into a system app by either using Titanium Backup, or simply use Root Explorer/ES File Explorer (root enable it) to move the APK from /data/app to /system/app.
I didn't need to do so here (using Titanium Backup), but rebooting the phone may be necessary after moving the app.
Launch APN Backup & Restore. Close the warning, and click "Disable ICS Check" on the menu.
Click "Backup APNs" to backup your existing settings. This will create a directory called "ApnBackupRestore" in your /mnt/sdcard.
Copy the xml file from step 1 to the ApnBackupRestore folder.
Go back to the main app menu, click on "Delete APNs" and confirm it.
Choose the file you downloaded from step 1 and confirm it.
Reboot phone, and enjoy the MMS.
Again, this is based on AlpineMan's work, I just cleaned the APN list up. In my short testing, it completely fixed my MMS flakiness. I figured it's better to post it here, as in the past, submitting fixes to the cyanogenmod team has been a waste of time.
I thought APN's were obsolete since ICS, can you restore APN's in JB?
Thanks for posting this! Mms is the only reason that kept me from using cmx as a daily driver. Will be definitely using this after work tonight when I have time to play.

I finally had a chance to test it on the AOKP JB build 4. I dont live in an area with LTE service. I still have 3g and its the same speed as from before and after this mod.
I can confirm that it does work for me. I havent tested out LTE yet. Is that what you meant by the enhanced network?
Can anyone confirm if LTE still works with this apn?
as for now i guess i'll keep it. 3g has definitely gotten slower for sprint in the past years. definitely makes me consider leaving for another network.

Im back to mean rom. my 3g speeds were down to the floor with this mod. like 10-20 kbps. it was horrendous.
Everytime i use a aosp rom, my mms barely works, the 3g is flakey, and i have bluetooth connectivity issues. I miss my original evo 4g!
Thanks for the mod for the mms fix :good:. it does work if anyone was wondering. You just have to put up with slower 3g speeds and deal with all the other bugs that an aosp rom comes with unfortunately.
DC here just did a speed test with these APNs and got 884kbps DL and 748kbps UL. I did not do one beforehand though.
That sounds good. Especially considering I haven't used the APNs yet, and get this

Unfortunately this did not work for me ... I still get a constant "Downloading" after receiving a MMS.
I can confirm this works. Just wanted to add on a few things that I had to figure out on my own, though. This guide was nice but it made things a little confusing at times.
HOW I DID IT:
Install APN Backup & Restore from the playstore.
Convert APN Backup & Restore to a system app by downloading /system/app mover from the playstore.
Open /system/app mover and click "APN Backup & Restore". Click YES when it asks you to move to /system/app/. Reboot phone.
Open up APN Backup & Restore. Go to menu and click Disable ICS Check. Click Backup APNs and enter name or press OK.
Download the APN config (right click save as) and save it to the folder "ApnBackupRestore" found on your sdcard0 (phone storage).
Open back up APN Backup & Restore and click Delete APNS.
Click Restore APNS and select "sprint-mms-fixed-apns.xml".
Reboot phone.
Done. Try it out.
If this doesn't working out for you then try disabling the auto retrieve feature found in settings so you can manually retrieve your pictures when you're in a good area.

Sorry to quote such a long post, but.....can't all this be done just manually thru root explorer.
Also, isn't the 'delete all APNs' step a bit,..risky or bad.

nice, im slowly working up the confidence to go back! i didn't like the screen tears in that rom though :/ paranoid android had screen tear issues too.
After flashing a non sense rom...i inevitably always return back to sense..even though sense to me is boring and clunky. and i hate the lock screen.

The screen tears are annoying, however I despise sense ROMs. Contact picture size is pitiful, crap multi tasker pane, horrible lock screen etc.. I can deal with some screen tears haha.

I don't see how there would be a risk in deleting your apns. If you back them up as instructed you can restore them at another point in time. All that happens is you lose internet for a few seconds while you're making the swap .

[TWEAK][YP-GI1]Smoother Scrolling

Smoother Scrolling
NOTE: Not tested on any other framework except for XXLF1. Not sure if it works for anything else but I'm pretty sure it doesn't. Also, not tested on INTL devices so if you want you can test and please tell me how it goes
Hello xda, so using this guide here: [HOWTO]More smooth scroll..., I've decompiled the framework.jar and edited some lines to make scrolling smoother.
Here is what the author of the guide said about the scrolling.
"- Some android applications have some lag when they scroll.
I found in logcat that garbage collector is working to much when I do some scroll in application.
I googled about it and found the 'scrollingcache' function inside android making problem.
Some application developers recommend disable 'scrollingcache' in app's internal config.
But not all applications have disabled scrollingcache.
So the mod I'll do will disable the scrollingcache throughout the Android OS.
All apps will have no problem with scrollingcache.
I've had scrolling improvements with facebook, playerpro, poweramp, gallery apps , etc.
It is simillar with volume step mod but different value to change."
Installations Steps:
DISCLAIMER - I am not responsible for anything that happens to your device. Make sure you have a backup of your old framework.jar or else if it fails you will have bootloops and you will have to reflash your current ROM!
1. Make sure your player is the US version (YP-GI1CB/XAA)
2. Download the attachment at the end of this post
3. Place the framework.jar that you downloaded into your player's SD card.
4. Using a root file explorer, copy the framework.jar file and navigate to /system/framework/ and make sure the file system is read/write. replace the old framework.jar
5. Change the file system back to read only.
6. Reboot. The first reboot will take a while like always.
By the way you don't need to restore if anyone was wondering.
Enjoy this tweak! You might not see a difference at first, but there definitely is a difference! By the way, the only app that seems like it doesn't get affected by this tweak is Facebook, I haven't seen a difference in scrolling.
Nice job bud. Keep it up

No, it's only for the 4.2, but if you want I might be able to do it just E-mail me your framework.jar from system/framework at [email protected]

Thanks! This is awesome.
Great! Worked fine on my player, which is YP-GI1CW. It really makes a difference while scrolling.
