All three audio channels to mute bug? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Has anyone had the bug where suddenly, all three audio channels are muted (the three icons have the crossed bar across them). The whistle notification still plays, and FM radio still plays, oddly, but can't play podcasts nor the audio player.
Rebooting seems to be the only way to fix.
Any ideas?
I don't recall getting that bug before installing a Time telling app (EQ STime). Will uninstall to see if that's the culprit...

As you already have guessed, usually apps are the culprit and playing around with the volumes.

Yeah, I'm fairly sure that's the culprit. But is there a way to restart the sound system without rebooting the phone? (Everytime I reboot I've to turn off wifi mode in #0011 which is annoying.)
(Killing the buggy app does not reboot the sound system obviously)

The audio server should be fine, most likely audio is only muted across the board.
Install the app 'Audio Manager ' to set the different volumes.

I do wonder, since all three volumes can be adjusted when pressing volume button, but I can't make them unmuted.
As for an Audio Manager, have you one to recommend that works great on the S3? The first few results from the play store have pretty negative reviews...

[Q] Audio Issues w/ DSP Manager?

Anyone else have issues using DSP Manager at high volumes? The issue happens when using the phone speaker or headphone jack (didn't test bluetooth) and setting volume to ~85% or higher. The resulting sound is a lot of high pitch squealing that I imagine would be similar to what you would hear with a decoder issue.
To replicate the issue:
1) Launch DSP Manager, choose Headset (if you choose headset, I wouldn't put your headphones on for this test...or if you're running a line out to a stereo receiver, turn your volume all the way down) or Phone Speaker and disable all effects or select Menu, Reset.
2) Play any mp3 or streaming audio (ie Slacker, Pandora), adjust the volume to be within 1-4 clicks of max.
3) Go back to DSP Manager, enable Equalizer, and then adjust the low frequency slider (leftmost slider) to be above 0.
4) At this point, the sound issue should be noticeable if you're experiencing the same issue I am.
If someone can please test this and confirm they have the same issue I would appreciate it. I didn't find any other reports of this issue, but if it's a known problem, can someone please point me in the right direction to resolve the issue? I've tried this on 4 different ROMs (I think they may all be Cyanogen based) and I have the same problem with all of them.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Sorry man I couldn't replicate it on Nonsensikal 8.8. Used Pandora, set volume to within 2 clicks of max, and set <100 hz to .2 .4 and .6. Didn't get any kind of squealing. This was on phone speaker. I have had weird DSP issues in the past though. Just didn't care enough to try it on all the froyo roms.
Sent from my nonsensikal froyo using XDA App

I have the same exact problem. I cant even move anything without it going crazy. im running CELBFROYO 2.9
Thanks for your feedback guys, I'm going to try out Nonsensikal 8.8, will report back later.
Edit: I tried Nonsensikal 8.8 and still had the audio issues. Did a little research and I thought maybe I was experiencing "clipping". I don't consider myself an audiophile so I wasn't really sure if this was an accurate diagnosis of my issue. This lead me down the path to try out the Mixzing app since it has a built in EQ. Since the Mixzing EQ only functions on audio thru the Mixzing player, it's not an end-all solution since I find myself pulling up Slacker when I want a change of pace from the mp3s I have on my SD card, and the Mixzing EQ does not function for streaming music.
Anyway, I found the EQ in Mixzing to be quite helpful as it appears to actually detect when clipping is occurring and notifies you by change the EQ bands to red. The clipping I experienced thru Mixzing is not comparable to what I hear when using DSPManager. The Mixzing clipping results in the audio cutting out for a given frequency range - for example when clipping occurs when a bass drum is playing, you don't hear the full range of sound of the bass drum, the low frequency is cut off. What's also noteworthy here is that thru Mixzing, I was able to rectify the clipping issue by simply re-adjusting the sliders to their previous positions and the sound output was corrected. Whereas with DSPManager, resetting the sliders didn't fully resolve the audio issue, I was still able to discern a high pitch whine especially during quiet portions of a song until either the song ended, or I disabled the EQ. If this were related to a clipping issue, I presume the squealing I hear would go away when I reset the sliders to their previous positions, since the squealing persists, I think it's probably a decoder issue.
Something else I learned here, perhaps already evident to other users, is that for each frequency band you adjust in Mixzing, it requires additional processor resources. This might explain why the Eris (not sure if this plagues other phones) struggles here. And on that note, I was using my Eris to test the waters and help me determine if it's worth rooting and dropping a custom ROM on my Incredible. Since this sounds like it can potentially be a resource issue, and I haven't found other users on different phones experiencing this issue, I guess I'll take the plunge and try a custom ROM on my Incredible.

No audio from browser, audio player but phone works. possibly skype related.

Hey together. I'm a noob *duck* - but I did quite some search on google and on these forums before posting, and I'm not a very stupid noob.
Today I got the situation that no audio is audible any longer from my browser, games, audio apps, or from an audio player (all of them previously worked). This is the case for headphone and also the built in speaker. The problem occurred very likely after using skype. I also still have audio in phone calls and also I still have sound for ringtones and other alarms. Handset functioms all still work fine.
The first obvious thing I did was checking volume settings in the android settings. There I moved all sliders - the one responsible for regular audio did not give me any feedback. If I use the volume buttons on the phone while I'm on my home screen I get audible feedback - but that doesn't influence my problem.
Funnily the sound in skype still works. More funnily: during skype calls the audio from my browser or the audio player is also audible (I tried this just out of couriousity as I suspected Skype to be the cause of my problem. Et voila - I got sound from a TV News page and also from the Walkman app while the call on skype was still running. As soon as the call in Skype ended the audio from browser and adio player got muted again.
I also tried to kill skype during a call in order to kill it before it can again mute the audio - No luck. as soon as the skype app is killed also the audio from audio player and Browser vanishes.
I also tried some audio apps - all have the same issue of having no sound.
I then tried different apps which control volumes - without any luck. So at the moment I don't have audio, except during skype calls.
I guess that skype has either access to some hardware settings which aren't used usually (I hated skype for things like this as long as it had existed) - or I'm missing something very obvious. Or something else. Does anybody of the developers here know about linux settings I could modify? (is there something like alsamixer which is only possible to access via jni or similar?)
// Edit:
Just found out that toggling airplane mode ON I have sound for media (audio player, browser). (but also lose the ability to use my cellphone and network). As soon as I switch back to airplainmode OFF also audio is muted again. And for sure - I also tried rebooting in different states of my phone quite often without any difference.
// Edit 2:
looks like I found a workaround but no permanent solution - I installed an app SoundAbout (free app) recommended for similar problems in an other thread: 89996-galaxy-s3-media-volume-stuck-mute.html (I have now put output permanently to "headphones" for media sounds. However as soon as this setting is reset to the default (let app decide) it is muted again when airplane mod is set to off - looks like an other app resets it? (could not find any app obviously doing this though as I stopped the usual suspects)
I still suspect Skype as the original reason for this problem as I just recently had it updated when the problem appeard and it also messes with this kind of stuff during usage (and I don't really use other apps dealing with audio except of browser, music player which weren't updated for a long time).
Maybe also of concern:
It's an sony xperia p, running Android 4.0.3 and it is currently rooted.

Volume Ghost Raising and Lowering Volume

Anyone else experiencing a sudden increase and sudden decrease in volume while playing music through google play? It's happened when it's hooked up to my IBolt dock as well as through bluetooth speakers. I have no clue what may be causing it, whether it's drivers on the phone itself or something screwy with Google Play music service.
I'm having the same exact issue. I'm not sure if it's Google play music or the phone causing the problem

I have the same issue too. Google Music, offline/cached songs, and I use a Klipsch S4i. I have one more day before the 14 day return policy is up. So I am guessing this is a wide known issue. I saw a review for Google Music about a S4 volume bug.
I have to assume it's a google music issue then that will be fixed. If it was a phone issue it'd happen on all music being played which I don't think it has for me off hand.

Has anyone tried turning off Adapt Sound for Music and see if that fixes the problem?
I never set up Adapt Sound therefore it's not turned on. I confirmed in the music app that Adapt Music was off, unless there is a simliar setting in Google Music I'm not aware of?

Yeah, I tried Google Music with Adapt Sound on and off, the problem is still there.
Equalizer? As I was typing this, I went into the equalizer and the volume instantly went back down to the "original" level. Ill tinker with it. I currently have it set to: Rock, Bass boost ~60%, and 3D effect Off. Ill set the equalizer to off and se what happens.
I use Apollo 1.1 and never had that issue with my music or any other sound.
Do you stream with Google Music? If yes, do you stream while connected to bluetooth and/or a dock?
So I think the equalizer is to blame. I had it off all day and there was no strange volume fluctuation.
interesting. I'll have to give that a shot as I do have mine on.

Thanks for the heads up. This has been driving me up a wall since launch.
There is a new Google Music update. Im testing it out with equalizer enabled. Ill report my results.
Results: Bug still there.

Volume control only affects right BT earbud

On a galaxy tab s7+, the tablet's volume control only changes the audio level for the right Bluetooth earbud (Bose quiet comfort).
The left earbud is stuck at a medium volume. The right earbud follows the media volume adjustments normally. In other words, it can be either louder or quieter than the left depending on how I set it. Of course, what I actually want is for both ears to stay equal across all volume settings.
Only the tablet is affected. The earbuds don't have this problem with other devices such as my android phone.
The tablet 's internal speakers work normally and stay balanced at all volumes.
Cold rebooting the tablet did not fix it. Neither did unpairing, resetting, and re-pairing the earbuds. Both the tablet and earbuds are up to date. The audio balance setting is normal in the Accessibility settings, and has never even been touched.
What a strange problem, isn't it? I've tried searching extensively, but all the results that show up are for audio entirely failing to come out of one side, or for people asking how to change the balance. This problem is totally different. Hopefully someone here is familiar with solving an issue like this! Any help is appreciated.
Try a network reset.
Clear system cache.
Try in safe mode.
Try a hard reboot.
Double check all audio settings... all of them.
If those don't work clear data on all associated apks. Try going back to their factory load versions.
Try updating them if still not working.
A hidden setting may have been alter. Poorly written 3rd party apps can do this. The issue may not appear until after the app is uninstalled.
It is preferable to find the root cause than do a factory reset as the issue is likely to reoccur.
Probably not a hardware issue.
Try reverse stereo and mono output if available and see how it behaves. It will give you clues to the cause.
If you factory reset be very careful which 3rd party apps you load. Load one at a time and test.
Thank you for your help! I've investigated it some more and found out more about the problem.
Once the headset is connected, three of the four volume sliders in the system audio controls no longer work as expected, and one of them is questionable. These are the results of testing the four sliders. (Each one plays a test sound through its own channel. I don't think channel is the right word, but I can't remember the right one.)
Ringtone: The test sound plays in both earbuds, as well as the internal speakers. It follows the volume slider perfectly, so no bug there. Still, I don't know whether it's normal to route the sound to both the headset and speaker outputs simultaneously.
Media: This channel has the volume bug. The test music plays at an unchangeable volume in the left, but it follows adjustments correctly in the right. The internal speakers are silent, as they should be.
Notifications: This volume slider has no effect, and the test sound's behavior is strange:
It plays through the left earbud at the unchangeable medium volume, but it plays through the right earbud at whatever level the Media slider is set. Internal speakers are silent, as they should be.
System: Same issue as Notifications.
Once bluetooth is disconnected, all sliders properly control the internal speakers.
What a rabbit hole this is turning out to be. I'm really hoping to avoid the hassle of a factory reset, but the following fixes have not worked:
Network reset, Clearing system cache, Safe mode, Hard reboot, Going over all audio and accessibility settings with a fine toothed comb, Muting and unmuting, Mono audio. (Even in mono, the left is unchangeable and the right obeys the Media slider.)
As for clearing the right apk data, I don't think it's even displaying the relevant apks. I don't see any of the ones I'd consider relevant if this were my Pixel phone. I looked for the option to display system apps, but all I found was a "Samsung apps" list with nothing that seems specific to bluetooth or audio.
My next move is uninstalling anything that plays media, though that'll probably be later this week. In the meantime, any more ideas on how to find and fix the root cause would be much appreciated! I'm hoping the info from the volume sliders can help narrow down the problem.
Update: fix found! I did both a network reset AND accessibility settings reset, then reconnected the headset. I'm thinking it was probably the accessibility reset that did it, but I'm mentioning both together in case that's the secret.
Do some Goggle searches.
Backup critical data. Unistalling apps is probably a waste of time. Play with for a bit until you fix or are tired of playing with it.
Factory reset. If that doesn't get it, it's either firmware or hardware.
Generally firmware doesn't get corrupted unless there's a hardware failure.
It's entirely possible you missed something. It's taken me a week or more sometimes to track something down. Give it some more thought.
When did it start?
What preceded it?
What codec is running when it works?
Try changing the codec and look at the bt options in Developer Options.
Play with it... Androids wuv attention

ATT LG V60 stops playing notifications when using quad DAC

So, if I play music through headphone jack with the QUAD DAC on for what seems to be at least five minutes, notification sounds no longer work until I reboot the phone.
By no longer work, I mean there is no audible sound at all. It's for all notifications, including the ringtone, and I can't play them by going into notification settings and trying to play them directly there.
If something comes in, the music will lower to allow the notification to play, nut no sound comes from it.
The weird thing, all music and in app sounds continue to work just fine.
I have the same problem. I think its a Android 10 issue. Not hardware related.
LG may have thought about this and made it default to not allow notifications to play over headsets to interrupt your experience....
I wish there was an option to enable or disable.

Only issue with that theory is that I am running Android 11, and have been from the start. Got the phone, went through the setup just enough to get it updated. Then did a factory reset once there were no more updates.
