S3 Contacts Problem - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

1. If a contact is on both SIM and phone, they merge into one and I can't assign ringtone to that contact. How can I make them not merge?
2. Some of my Whatsapp contacts are not showing up in address book as having Whatsapp. Have refreshed and restarted phone and stuff, still doesn't work. Some of the contacts show the Whatsapp logo just fine. Any way to fix?
Many thanks.

Have you try assigning only one either phone or sim?

Yup, works when I assign only phone.
Was wondering if there's a way to do it without deleting contacts from SIM..

Contacts are duplicated?

Here is my problem or annoyance if you will. I added my contacts to my phone and added their email accounts and numbers. I synced Facebook to my contacts so it would merge my contacts with their Facebook pictures and such. Well now my contacts show their name twice. One being Facebook and the other being the phone number on my sim card. Is there any way to merge them together and have my contacts listed just one time in my contacts folder?
Did that make any sense?
If you go to Contacts>Menu>Display Options you can edit the options to show contacts from SIM card or not, have you tried that?

Well the problem with that is that I can not edit the contacts with Facebook information. It will not let me add a phone number. This would be sweet if I could do that because then I would not need the contacts that I saved to the sim card.

Try copying your contacts from sim to phone. Then go to the options to only display phone contacts.

Most likely you have more that one vcf file on external sd being restored .

Thanks for the responses guys. I will try to copy the contacts to the phone and see if I can get a merge going.
Also it's better to have them all saved as Google contacts anyway so if you lose your sim or do a factory reset they'll all sync up again after you put in your gmail info on initial setup.

Looks like importing from the sim card to the phone fixed my problem. This merged all of my phone numbers to my friends list from Facebook. Thanks!

[Q] Duplicate contacts when creating text message

When I start a text and put in the name of the contact I want to message, duplicates are showing. I have it set so it doesn't do this for calls, but I can figure out how to do it for texts. It shows 2 of every contact. Is there a way to set it do it only pulls names from either the phone or sim?
Any sUggestions as to why this is happening?
do you use gmail to backup and save your contacts?

I already did that. i dont have this issue for when I make calls and look up names, just texts. Im not storing my stuff on gmail either
This all started after I tried to update my phone to the newest update thru mini kies. i ended up having to wipe my phone and restart. I did get the update, and now i noticed its doing this.
It looks as though the Messaging contacts display is ignoring the 'Contacts-->Display Options' settings. I have my phone contacts set to display just the names etc from the Phone memory, not the SIM memory and it works well - no duplicates. However, when composing a Message or Email and press the Contact button, the list of contacts shows 2 of everybody. I've gone through everything obvious but can't see it, now turning to the experts for advice please? What do i need to tick/untick remove or whatever to put this right?
Any suggestions how to make this stop?

Are you using gmail to backup your contacts? If so just go into gmail and consolidate all the dupes than delete the contacts saved on your phone and sim. Had the same problem with dupes in the messaging. If you need more help just shoot me a pm

Which ROM are you using?

My contacts are not backed up to gmail, and im just using the regular stock rom. I dont have phone phone flashed/rooted/whatever.
I had the same problem
sign in to gmail on your computer click contacts it will display all including the phone numbers stored on you your phone if you delete them all (contacts with phone numbers) it should take off all duplicate contacts away
but make sure all phone numbers stored already on your sim card
its something about MIUI if you ever used it before
if that didn't work I know for sure if you have a gmail contact and a phone number contact with the same name and you trying to send sms or mms it show both of them as to send to at that point I would edit the first name of gmail contact by adding * to the name
Hope that helps
But I dont have any contacts listed on my gmail contacts when I sign in on my laptop.

the only thing i can think of that after you restore your phone do you restore it from backup that it has a duplicate contacts ?
or go under contacts/press the first key to the left/display option/ choose phone, sim, gmail (all) then view your contact list and delete all duplicate contacts
best thing i found is to store contacts on sim only that allow you to import them to any phone and also to your own phone after you wipe it off
My contacts show up fine in my address book, no duplicates. So I know the issue isnt with that. There are no duplicates on my phone.
I dont know what to do. Ive tried everything, and its really annoying when trying to send a text to go thru all those duplicates.
when I go to create a text, there are also email addresses showing when I begin typing a name to search for a contact. I dont know where they are coming from

You need to backup all your contacts to gmail. First.
Go to accounts & Sync and tap your google account or any other email accounts you have on your phone. It will give your sync screen, see if "sync contacts" is ticked there. If it is then try unticking it, see if that helps.

go to contacts, display option, and then click on gmail account below the line "choose the contacts to display". Now unceck all box. click on "done"
Now only SIM contacts will be displayed.
thanks but i need the oppisit i dont need the sim contacts
I also have this problem. Did anyone get only Gmail contacts to display? Not the SIM contacts.
I am interested to know how to hide the sim card contacts also in 351 - anyone has succeeded?
I use Go contacts. It will solve ur problem and available free on android market. But works great when u hav rooted phone along with Go laincher. Wht I did is disabled dell stage and enabled Go launcher as default. It saves memory and works great.
Umm, what I did was:
1. Go into your contacts.
2. Click the middle button between "Home" and "Back".
3. Click "Display Options".
4. Uncheck SIM contacts.
That should do it.
My solution is a simple one: don't put contacts on the SIM card. Haven't done it in 2+ years, and see no need to do it now.

Anyone know where contacts are stored on your phone

My contacts wouldn't show up in contacts even after I imported from sim card, so i kept inporting them to try and get them to show up, however now in my message app, it shows the same contact about 7 times because I imported them so many times trying to get them to show up in the contacts list. Anyway because they don't show up in contacts i can't delete them, is there somewhere on the phone they are stored so i can delete the whole contacts file and start again?
doesn't matter figured it out myself
Can you share the info with us?
Goto contact then menu then view it gives you choices of what contacts you want

well i didn't figure out where they were stored, but i just went into phone settings then applictions then found the contacts app clicked on it, and hit the clear data button, it must have deleted all the contacts with this because it seem to fix the issue i was having also. And now my contacts show up.
also on my phone, there isn't a view options in the menu of contacts?? strange.
I tryed it but after importing my contacts from sd card it dosent show on contacts.
I wanted to get rid of groups from google.
Fixed the issue by going into display

Have you tried importing your contacts from your googlemail account? Go into settings on the contacts apparently and get it to sync the googlemail account.

[Q] Cannot copy SIM contacts to phone or sync with Gmaiol

Hi all -
My mom just inherited an AT&T Samsung Galaxy II (rooted, OS ICS 4.0.3, Build IML74K.117) and I am trying to move her contact from her SIM to her phone or, even better sync with her Gmail account.
From the Contacts app, I'm opening the menu and selecting SIM Management, then choosing Copy Contacts From SIM and selecting the option of the Gmail account (I've also tried selecting the Phone option as well). Instead of going to the screen where I can choose the contacts to copy, the phone just goes back to the SIM Management screen. (I took a screenshot of it but it's been 8 minutes and the text is still in Send mode on her phone.)
Any ideas on what is preventing me from being able to move the contacts? My next move is to take it back to stock and see if that doesn't help but that's really a last resort and something I'm trying to avoid.
Thanks in advance!
Lauren

Hi, thanks for responding...
No, because she is coming from a stone-age phone and has never had anything linked to her Gmail account before, which is also new. So in this case, I'm attempting to transfer the SIM contacts to her phone/Gmail account in order to A) get them on the phone in a more unified manner and B) sync with Gmail so that she now has an online backup of her contacts. She's coming from a Motorola Razr circa 2005. For real.
I couldn't say for sure, but the problem could be that the format in which the Razr stored the contacts is not being read by the SGS2 which is kicking you back out of the menu.
This is probably an old thread but no Gmail sync along with cannot send mms, indicate that you probably have no internet access.
Make sure you do have first, either wifi or mobil data turn on

Nope, the format is universal and can be read by pretty much any phone.
