Will You Upgrade In The Future? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I have been using my SGS3 for about 6 weeks and I am loving it. This phone is loaded with so much technology that I can not really see what more I would need in a phone.
1.4 dual core CPU
2GB memory
LTE
GPS
Music and video player
Gorgeous 4.8" screen
Will this not last me a few years? This phone will not be obsolete any time soon.
What more would I really need in a phone? I know in the future phones will have more stuff built into them, but to what end? I can actually see myself using this phone until it is dead.
I know there are people who upgrade to the latest and greatest every time something new comes out, but the average person does not. So, will you upgrade to what ever comes out next , and if so, why? Or will you keep your phone for a while?
For those who will upgrade, what would you like to see in the next phone that the S3 does not already have? Coffee maker? Juice squeezer? Clothes Iron? Hamburger maker? Nail polish applier?
Ian

For me, is simply depends on my budget. If I got the money, I just change whatever best phone comes out

I've had the S1 S2 now with the S3, I've already set aside money for the Galaxy S4 next year.

this ^ plus there's bound to be a whole host of features... Soon (well I'm hoping) phones will be completely voice controlled. although I quite like the gesture control (someone over in the apps forum has developed something)

There are never "needs" to upgrade just "desires". I will be upgrading if the next phone has HD Super Amoled Plus.

I've had all iphones ... then changed to android with the S2 and now the S3, i'm prepare for iphone 5 or Galaxy S4 ...

Depending on the design of the next Google Nexus phone, I'll be getting that.
Most likely it will be a Motorola product

It will be obsolete in 15 months. Trust me.
When the S2 was released, about 1 and a half years ago, people said the same thing: it'd the "the phone" for years to come. Now that I've had my S3 for about the same time as you, I look at my old S2 (that I gave to my wife) and think how was I able to use such a tiny screen!
The thing is: our expectations will shift upwards, new technologies will emerge and things we don't even know that exist today are things that a couple years from now we won't be able to live without.
I refrain my self from saying "this will be my phone for xx years", because I am a tech addict, a gadget junkie! I remember clearly that a couple weeks before the release of the S3 I wrote in the XDA S2 forums that I wouldn't spend a dime on moving from my S2 to the S3... until I held it in my hands! I wrote that there is nothing in the S3 that I couldn't have from the S2.... how wrong was I ?

Exactly the same with me

If they make a phone with
- no wake up lag
- no physical home key
- 2 GB RAM
and leave everything else the same as SGS3, I'll buy it immediately.

Galaxy nexus would be a perfect phone for me if it has sd card slot and better SoC at least like s2, now when google put tegra 3 in nexus 7 which performs really well it's obvious that next nexus phone will be equipped like this or even better . So i'm 95% sure Nexus 4 or whatever it's called, will bey next one

Maybe we should all wait for the s10? With 20gig ram and octocore cpu!

Also IMO, they havent even officially launched ICS for it through any canadian carrier. So, Why would samsung go through the troubles of updating a phone hardware? let the success ride itself out for a bit.

I don't know i was kinda shock its like the shelf life of high end phones around 6 to 7 months then wham a new version. Now I did read that the slll will have only a duel core due to the quad doesn't play well with lte. Maybe that's why a duel core. Idk. One thing I've noticed is the phones are never complete to me. The one x has the quad core great camera but then no sd card. The note great but doesn't have the s4 chip. It's like all the phones have one major features lacking just so u may have to upgrade or move on to the next one.
What about a phone that has
Quad core
Sd card
2gb of ram
Super almoled screen
Lte
Lastest os
Thin
Great camera
Great processor
The ultimate phone all the best of the recent phones. Now that would be hot.
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
It won't be much longer and this phone will have been out for a year. My next Note will be an international one since LTE is not appealing to me. Bring it!
"Due to its incredible success Samsung has started to work on its predecessor the Galaxy Note 2."
Who writes these things? I doubt predecessor is the word they wanted to use.
Successor must have confused them
I don't buy it, the specs just don't add up. .2" bigger is quite bigger even though it doesn't seen so, only 1.5gb of ram whb the s3 has 2? The processor? Nah its a fake
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
Of course it's fake. Samsung has never stated that they intend to make another Note. It is pure conjecture.
Look what happened when they dropped the screen size half an inch with the S3. All of a sudden it is cool to have a ginormous screen. Hopefully it won't dissuade them to keep it above five inches.
The S3 is getting an SPen (called a CPen) very soon as well. Maybe the next Note will be one of the five Nexus phones dropping this year.
Who knows. Hell the one true fact of technology is you can't really keep up. There will always be the next hotness around the bend. Wow I didn't relize the note had been out so long I guess cuz Att just got it in March/April but i guess it has been out longer internationally.

That's how it usually works. International first and then the Americas. I am surprised the S3 is being released this quickly in the U.S. to be honest. Maybe they are trying to soak up some of the 'would be' iPhone 5 buyers although it is probably more along the lines of supply and demand.
Yea...I agree with you!

To many little things in this article don't add up fire me to believe any more than maybe the timing.
First, it's either written by someone whose native tongue is not English or something... And why would the SG3 get quad core and the revised note be dual core? Just because if the lte thing? Makes no sense.
And why would they repeat the crap about over 300 dpi again as they do.
The while thing: Smells funny to this kid and when it smells like poop, it usually is.

How does S3 rank vs its competition now?

I for one believe the s3 is still at the top or equal with the nexus 4 or note 2....maybe note 2 has a minor edge but as far as performance and speed I feel like the s3 is still and the top of the rankings I scored higher than the note 2 on the antutu app easily....but what are your thoughts?

How do you figure that? In what way is it inferior?
The N4 has a better CPU, GPU, screen and software.
The S3 has removable storage, that's about all that is better.
We all like our phones but lets not talk sh*t.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I wouldn't say Nexus 4 is inferior, but has it's drawbacks. Non-removable battery, no possibility of adding storage and maybe lack of LTE, but that's the end of it. Well, and its manufacturer is LG, that's a drawback for me, but thats all.
The fact that it sells for 300$ is it's main selling point, besides it's processing power (which I am beggining to consider is starting to be overkill). 2Gb of RAM is fairly nice too. If I did not own a SGSIII rigth now, I would be kicking my ass in a rush for getting one, that's for sure.

Removable battery is meh, got the nexus 7 and was concerned about freezes from overclocking too much and not being able to pull the battery, but if you hold the power button for like ten seconds it does a hard reboot so problem solved.
Storage is a kick in the ass alright but I have unlimited data and my music on Google music so I can get around that problem too and as for LTE well Ireland doesn't have LTE so that's a moot point.
It all depends on each persons situation I guess.

I believe the top 3 phones are the S3, N4, and Note 2...I would like to have a Note 2 but just to expensive....I played with one for a while and it just felt like a big S3...but the N4 seems to be different or more interesting in my opinion and the price is just right lol....but you cant go wrong with any of these phones...they are all awesome...
S3 have better screen then nexus 4..............read reviews
s3 is iphone killer , so yeap its stacking up pretty high in the competition
S3 still wins it for me. Hate those onscreen buttons. Hate that n4 doesn't have support for SD card. My 16 internal is filled with game and apps data while my 32g sd card only has 4gigs memory left from backups and videos, etc. My S3 rarely lags and at 1.6GHz, my benchmarks are all higher than that of stock Note2. Multiwindow support is coming so the only real advantage of note2 is the RAM which i think is overkill because i never fill up the 1gig i have bec i removed all the freaking bloatwares from samsung. I dont know though if it would be enough when the multiwindow comes.

We must understand that manufacturers are looking at profits and increasing utility is their main focus. Consider that there were people asking this same question when the s2 came out. Yes, it was "the best" in most areas, design, hardware etc. But that was then, this is now with the s3 replacing the s2 as the name suggests. We must consider the future developing prospects for the Android as a platform and what they hold and how soon manufacturers will release this "new technology". The reason why I put new technology in inverted commas is because when manufacturers introduced new products as "new", they have long been aware of the latter but only introduce it to the market now as it is better (more competitive) that the current devices.
Manufacturers are able (based on demand) to determine when a product is at its peak (in terms of sales) and so introduce a "new product" which they have developed long ago to gain new demand thus maintaining or increasing profits, the latter is most likely.
So in terms of the utility of our devices, yes we have "the best" but for how long is the real question? The new s4 is already developed IMHO but they are just waiting to release, I'm sure they monitor this forum to see what user demands are in the future, I "too much lag here, multi windows there, device getting too hot)" and so they adapt their product to meet user requirements thus increasing utility and potential profit.
Right now (given that there are no subjectively better products on the market) I am very happy and would not what anything else but let's see the "new" stuff in the future.

Was 3D just a phase or would you like a 3D capable note?

I was just thinking about what kind of things the Note 3 would need to make me get it when I'm eligible for an upgrade (feb 2014). The note 2 seems pretty nice and would be cheap or free with an upgrade by the time I'm eligible, but if the note 3 had some insane stuff or was capable of making 3D video, I would probably wait for it.
But the whole 3D thing seems outdated. Maybe because even though it's kind of cool, it really does f#*k up your eyes.
How else could the next note be better besides better internal processor or having a flexible/ indestructible screen?

I run dual quad Xeons in my server at home and unless you're running virtualization on it I can tell you it doesn't make a lick of difference. Most software programs and their OSs aren't optimized to run multiple cores let alone 8 cores. I love new tech but until android optimizes itself for multiple cores, it'll be nothing but bragging rights. Sure JB optimized for better running on multiple cores, but still doesn't utilize them effectively as most developers have no idea how to write multi-threaded applications. One of these days software applications will stay on par with hardware. Heck who here can remember how long we had 64 bit cores before an effective mainstream 64 bit operating system came out? At least 6 years. by then we had dual processors (which OS writers had to accommodate for) and most of us had gotten a new car.
I hope by the time I have an 8 core phone, there's an OS on it that can effectively use it as well as software I can install on it to use it as well.
I only go one good eye any way it all looks the same to me

When i heard the S4 was going to be an octa-core phone i was like "Hell yeah!", now that we know were only getting a quad core? pass. I MIGHT have gone for the S4 mini if they didn't nerf the specs so much. No HD, no quad core, slower processor... wtf samsung?
For now im fine with my phone. If it breaks i can buy another one used in excellent condition for $150. We got Jellybean, we got a quick enough dual core, we have a decent screen, not HD but doesnt need it at that size... Really what i have is enough, software can always be updated and ported over and thus far the hardware has not advanced enough to justify laying down $500+. If only HTC would unlock their bootloaders and add expandable memory and have amoled screens, i much rather the form factor (and front speakers) of the One... lol. Oh well, cant have it all eh?
Fantastic. Another one of these threads. Exactly what XDA needs.

Anyone leaving the S4 for the Note 3?

The G2 thread is quite popular with some good discussion going on, so I thought I'd start a discussion about my next device; the Note 3. It's going to be introduced at an unboxing event on Sept 4th in Berlin, Germany; just ahead of the IFA 2013 the conference the previous two Notes have been introduced from. The specifications are hefty:
5.68″ Full HD Super AMOLED display (1920 x 1080)
Octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz (depending on the market)
3GB of RAM
13MP back-facing camera with OIS technology
ARM Mali-T628 MP6 GPU
4G LTE
16GB/32GB/64GB storage options
microSD slot supportable of additional 64GB
Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
3,200mAh battery
I'll be using Verizon's Device Payment Program to both upgrade my device early and retain my unlimited data.

As the OP says...why???
No. Sorry, but a screen/device that large is simply too big. Also, Samsung can pack as much horsepower they want under the hood in terms of specs, but they really should focus on the software optimization to get a truly great phone. That's where performance is lacking.
With that said, no, the S4 will stay for now. Outside of a bigger device and screen, I probably wouldn't notice much difference.

As the guy above me basically states, the phone is crap if the software isn't optimized. In a perfect world I wouldn't resort to modding my device. However, with all the stuff Samsung loads in I need to because I feel a degradation in performance compared to previous devices. Samsung just makes the software and hopes that the high end specs will make for a smooth experience. This just won't cut it anymore. People can complain about the iPhone all they want but with the "meh" specs its packing Apple makes up for it with their excellent software optimizations. Not sure what my next device would be though.
