Great phone, terrible camera :( - Motorola Droid RAZR

Just got a RAZR MAXX and I love the handset, screen, build quality, size, weight and battery life, but the camera absolutely sucks. It is beyond dreadful for a phone of this spec/price.
I am thinking it isn't just me because I saw a few threads complaining about this, but also if you compare the sample shots at GSMarena with say the SII and Galaxy Nexus (can't post links) then you can see this camera absolutely sucks, even compared to the 5MP Galaxy Nexus. My own experience is that it is barely acceptable in good daylight (even then the colours and contrast are dreadful) but in artificial light or poor light it is completely hopeless. Also it takes way too long to focus.
Is there anything I can do to improve it or should I just send it back and swap it for something else?

Keep the camera shutter button pressed until you are ready to take a pic. The camera will focus and when you are ready to take the pic just release it.

Yes but the picture it takes is still absolutely terrible - noisy, bad detail, terrible colour reproduction, bad contrast. Seriously, go to GSM Arena and compare the test photos, or grab someone's Samsung/HTC/iPhone and do a few shots yourself - there is just no comparison. I've had 2MP Nokia dumb phones that take better snaps.

I'm not an idiot. I have tried every setting combination and the thing just sucks big time. Have you ever seen the pics from a SII/S|II/4S/any Sony phone? Or done the comparison at GSM Arena? This just doesn't compare - it is embarrassingly bad. As bad as my old Acer Liquid MT and that is a £120 phone.

I know, sorry, I'm just gutted because I love everything else about the handset (it is an amazing design) and prefer it above all other current handsets, but the camera is just such a massive let down. I'm going to take it back tomorrow and see if I can exchange it... probably go for a Xperia S which was my original choice but I was put off by the crappy plastic design, lack of SD slot, and stupid flap over the USB port.
I should have stuck to my original choice but the MAXX turned my head!!

Instead if attacking the guy, read his post. He asked if there were any known fixes or should he exchange it. That is the problem I'm seeing in the RAZR forums, to many people just flaming each other instead of helping.
As to your question, there is something with the compression that moto used, and a post on how to fix it. Not sure were, but search the forum and you should find it. Not sure if it will help you, but it did seem to help my photo quality. You could also try camera ics from the market or any other third party to see if it helps.

Thanks dude. I have tried other apps, and I don't much like the look of the patch and suspect it wouldn't help as I don't believe it is a JPEG compression issue... more a sensor/lense/hardware issue so there is a limit to how much any software processing can help. Absolutely gutted as I love the handset but it's going to have to go back - my main reason to update from the Acer was for a better camera and this just doesn't cut it.
From looking around seems the best cameras are on SII/SIII and Xperia S. The Xperia has many other drawbacks though which means I might end up with a SIII which is annoying because I hate having the same phone as everyone else
I honestly think Motorola were SO CLOSE with the handset. Maybe the HD will have a better camera.

No problem just figured I'd offer some suggestions. I figured you had tried them already, but you never know. So of I was you I would choose the s3, at least it's comparable to the Maxx.

I figured out that the pictures quality is more better with another rom. Just with Black Widow AOKP Rom the pictures are much better than the other pictures taken with ICS stock rom.

do u mean is bad when u view it on the phone? cause when i transfer them to a pc or a tv there just average, i dont say they are good but there are just average 8mp pic. the difference with the nexus 5mp is when u zoom

That's interesting about the rom influencing image quality.
I was, and still am a bit impressed by the camera quality on the dinc, and I bought my Dare in part based on the lens/mp, but that was before I was more educated in photography. I'm by no means impressed by the Razr's camera, but knowing it's a cell phone, I see the camera as a convenience. I generally carry my canon s95 just in case, and will have one of my nikon's on hand if I know I'll be shooting. The razr's IQ may be sub par compared to other phones, but if my photos are a priority, I'm not looking to my phone as my camera.

Agreed. The camera is my biggest complaint with my maxx. I have a few third party camera apps but the quality is still lacking.
I'm gonna search for that patch mentioned earlier in the thread.
Stock ICS /w Root and some kernel tweaks.

I don't really think that the kernel modules are responsible for the picture quality..

I took a ton of photos yesterday in different conditions and with different lighting. Uploaded them to my PC and the results weren't good. It is very strong at close-up shots in good light which give really excellent detail and colours, but any long, mid-range, motion, or low light shots are extremely poor in comparison to the latest offerings from Sony/Samsung/HTC.
In the end I swapped it for a Galaxy S3, which I reluctantly admit is an awesome bit of kit.

Proof that megapixels don't matter...smh for all the idiots

http://phandroid.com/2011/07/06/htc-evo-3d-vs-htc-evo-4g-2d-camera-comparison-forum-talk/
Mainly posted this for all the comments I read stating...I hate the evo 3d I wish it was the same phone just without the 3d and with the same camera as the evo because 8 is 3 more higher giggerpixels than 5...
point of the thread is...MEGAPIXELS ARE NOT A TRUE INDICATION OF WHAT IS "BETTER". same goes for quadrant scores...anyway thanks for reading, comment beeeeeeeeeeeeeeelow
While I agree that megapixels do not matter so much when it comes to picture quality I have to say my E4G took much better pictures than what he has there. It can't compete with my Canon T1i, but, as someone mentions in the comments there, the stock ROM was made to use the Evo's camera and takes much better pictures than anything I've seen CM7 take. Honestly I was impressed with the Evo 4Gs camera when it was used with proper lighting.
My 3d takes much better pics then my 4g. The colors and clarity have been much better for me on the 3d.
I do not understand why anyone has complained about the camera. The only complaint I have is I wish there was no delay when taking a picture and I would truly be happy. This of course is not a complaint just towards the 3d but seems to be the norm for all camera phones.

If you go to settings when in the stock camera app go to 'review duration' and select 'no review' and off and the delay is gone. Makes taking pics real snappy.
Is it just me or did a lot of the 8mp pics look much better, more life-like and realistic. Just the first picture looked better with the 5mp to me. Who knows though...I'm old and probably need glasses.

those M&Ms look awesome BTW...
Although I do love my phone very much, I think fanaticism is to blame... Fanatics are the guys who get mad at any little negative comment or personal opinion that does not agree with their logic. i.e.- the whole camera thing ii treated ii is mentioning... I swear it's like people use "Text search" on the page and look for threads that say IMO, or I THINK... It's kinda pathetic. A valid point I say OP.
IMO I think either camera can take amazing pictures depending on the circumstances. I own both phones and I can tell you, some pics look like crap, some look awesome. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.
Megapixels don't matter, sensor quality does. The Evo 3D sensor is a noisy mess, as are most small phone-friendly sensors, but the Evo 3D is just average at best.
Please. Massive rationalization. (Yeah, I know...from an idiot, lol).
You can only make judgements by using your own phone, your own eyes, vs other phones. Not shots via other cameras via other links/sites/unknown settings.
I've done so many comparisons...hundreds (E3D vs 4G; E3d vs SGS2; E3d vs other E3D's!....yeah camera quality was important to me this round!... that I'm really over this
But:
The average (all lighting) 2D pics in the Evo 3D are:
1. In the 2011 smartphone arena are p o o r! It's a great device but this is a fact.
.2.Are substandard vs the 4G (although settings workarounds can bring it close). Go to a sprint store. Fairly compare in average lighting.
3. Are flat out dull compared to the 8mp Sensation...which is a slight upgrade to 4G.
4. Vs SGS2, IPhone or Sony Arc? Don't need to go there!...although I think this is gonna change with HTC devices from here on out.
If you take your phone and compare to the other devices in various conditions I think you'll agree.
Still really like the E3D tho....thing smokes! Don't really know what updates/rooting will do but we'll see.
the bottom line for me is camera-wise, i want a phone that takes clear pictures that i can semi-blow up and keep "good" quality. I don't care how good they actually are, so long as i can see them and no areas are blotchy...but once again let me see to everyone, this had nothing to do with the quality of the evo 3d's camera. It has to do with the fact that people simply are assuming 8mp>5mp...not true. that is the point of my post, not that the evo 3d has a great or better than XXX's camera. wrong idea here...
Was trying to find a post somewhat related to the camera quality on the E3D (takes a while to do so on said phone) without making a new post. Here are a few pics I have taken with my phone.
Enjoy.
Edit: Seems that my phone didn't upload the same picture size for each photo even though they were all taken the same way...

http://pocketnow.com/android/motorola-dinara-revealed-tipped-for-att
Motorola just launched the Dinara this morning, but because it was shrouded as a China-only handset, no one really noticed. Well the dual-core, 720p, 13-megapixel XT928 is indeed coming to the US, we've learned, as the MB886 (and internationally as the XT885/XT920); like the MB860 Atrix and MB865 Atrix 2, Dinara is expected to land on AT&T, although possibly not as an exclusive.
This is the second time in recent memory that the company has quietly revealed the international version of a handset before launching the American variant: we saw the Droid 3 spoiled by the Milestone 3 only a few months back. However, with the RAZR having only recently begun shipping -- itself upstaging the Bionic -- it seems unlikely that Dinara will be announced in the US until at least CES.
Full specs on China's Dinara can be found in the press release, linked below. Although the XT928 is a 3G device, expect Dinara to be loaded with LTE radios by the time it arrives stateside (regardless of carrier).

Thanks. But I don't see anything really eye catching. meh
Feels like I just got butthurt
I'm disappointed only because they could have put the 13MP camera in the RAZR, it isn't bigger. The RAZR would have costed like 80€ more than now, but well, it could have been a real highend superior device.
And it isn't a chipset limitation: OMAP4430 supports it FULLY.
I'm bored of this. As soon as replacements for Dinara will be out, I'll buy its replacement 13MP camera, mount it in the RAZR and port its driver, other than write a guide on how to mount that $%£$%£ camera in it.
And obviously I hope its pinout will be compatible/adaptable on our RAZR.

I feel like im troll posting, but this is the kinda thing that pulls me towards the Nexus line of phones. The atrix lasted 4 months before it was bested on the same carrier, droid 4 is coming out soon and the bionic came out 2 months ago. HTC does the same thing. Diarrhea of phone productions.
I dont care if they put 33mp camera inside it unless the sensor is great. I would prefer my Zn5's 5mp kodak sensor over anything.

This.
If the Dinara is, like is rumored, an LCD screen and a sub-par camera (if the sensor sucks, 13MP might actually be a downgrade since it will make for noisy shots), I would consider it a downgrade from the RAZR. Also, Verizon > AT&T (in my area, and most others; YMMV).
Nothing to see, here. The RAZR will be outclassed soon enough, but not by this.

So? Just because a new Nexus comes only once a year doesn't mean that they're not outdated quickly. The Nexus S came out right before the emergence of dual-core headsets and was literally outdated within weeks and even the Galaxy Nexus will be replaced soon enough; quad-core devices are literally only months away at this point.
Options are the beauty of this platform.
Want incremental, yearly updates? Go get an iPhone, simple as that.

That's your opinion. I've used both phones and Zn5 is hands down winner against the XT720 when it comes to image quality. XT720 was also good but it wasn't near nowhere to zn5 !
Honestly, that looks like a RAZR had sex with a Droid X. I appreciate the camera and the screen, but their design is moving backwards now..
And Moto is trying desperately to stay on top, just like everyone else. Android is a quickly-evolving platform, there's always something new around the corner to jam into a device. And when potential buyers are looking for a phone, they always want the newest technology. While it might seem like a bad decision to keep throwing phones out every other week that make yours look like crap, in order to hold their own, they kindof have to. That's why you don't see them cranking out seven tablets every week, tablets are more like "okay well as long as we have the newest processor and a decent GPU we're pretty well off let's check back in 4 months"

ICS might actually improve the picture quality. There may be mods as well that make things better. You gotta think what's more important, the phone as a whole or the camera.

Mmm HTC hasn't been TOO bad about pushing out devices, and even then the specs are either equal, lesser, or slightly better. Moto just seems to be pushing devices out left and right. It is pretty disappointing to drop $300 + on a device and then a few weeks later you see something with higher specs come out. The HD screen vs qHD does make a fairly decent difference from what I've noticed so far. Tbh the upcoming Nexus phone isn't anything revolutionary or spectacular except for ICS. Android phones are just coming out too fast and hopefully it slows down a bit.
damn, i can't wait for this phone! looks like a mean upgrade from my current one.

HTC ONE X camera not all that great

I know everybody wants to switch to a new phone, and one of the reasons is the newest htc camera is so much better than anything else...or is it? Maybe waiting one more generation is the way to go.....http://www.gsmarena.com/pureview_blind_test-review-773.php
This thread says otherwise
well of course it does, they all own the phone and they are coming from older phones. Fact is no one in the 1000 people sampled could pick out the htc photos. Well maybe thats a good thing?
There is alot more to a smartphone than its camera, the evo 3d is the exception because 3d is the headline feature.....point being HTC has designed a good phone (albeit with a few niggles for a selected bunch of models), The camera is the cherry on the cake, now people can decide if they want the whole experience i.e. the cake, or just the cherry i.e. the standout feature from the proverbial or literal sh**

That might not be true, actually cell phones are so much alike that one phone having a much better camera than the others might turn out to be it's biggest feature. At any given moment there might be almost as many people taking pictures with a cell phone as there are making a call, heck a lot of people just text or use it for web surfing.
I think the real question here is, what camera would meet YOUR standards? There are a lot of people out there who say the camera is raising the bar, and obviously, you're a skeptic. Am I right?

I would love to have the lte\one x camera on my evo3d, i'm not that great at taking pictures and would like to get better. I just like to read and found the camera comparison to be quite interesting. Maybe I should have said camera great but not the greatest? Let me add one thing, is there anyone who wouldn't want this camera on their next phone? And i mean camera only. That would be raising the bar by a huge amount.

Thats not exactly what I mean.... You don't buy the phone JUST based on the camera alone... Its the whole package.... The one x camera is great, but in these tests all the settings have to be equal and thats a user oriented thing as to how each individuals perception of a good quality image is, there are too many variables.
IMO HTCs camera settings have never been the best straight out the box... My desire hd had that issue and the same with the evo 3d, but then its to my taste and everyone's is different, unless the image is just **** lol

Glad to see people comparing the One X/EVO 4G LTE with a phone that isn't even in their hand yet.
I'm okay with the camera being only slightly better than other phones, given the amazing speed at which it takes photos.

I'm not purchasing either device,
But I've been lucky enough to play with them side by side already.
And I'm a huge HTC fan
It pains me to admit, HTC kinda lost there ass this time.

The one x camera is what they said it would be. Awesome for a smartphone! Well atleast my evo lte cam is,which I'm pretty sure it's the same. Mind you I'm 26 year's old and have a busy nightlife, this camera captures it ALL!

But, you do realize that the One Series and the EVO 4G LTE were both completed by design and announced before official rumors of the S3 was complete. So, of course Samsung would 1up the competition. It's just like if a new phone is announced later in the year, it's obviously gonna have better specs than one that was designed before.
And HTC definitely didn't lose their ass with this new phone (Especially the EVO 4G LTE). The One series is a step in the right direction for the company. No more quantity over quality. They're taking things down the right road this time.

What I meant by lost their ass is by pitching a huge marketing campaign based on the power of their new cameras and than they get beat out.
I stumbled on this post searching for something. What a dumb post. Just delete his whole thread. I myself am.dumber for reading it. Camera quality is subjective when quality is this good. No one is using a phone to take aerial photos of property to show off. HTC has a hit. S3 is good but another same looking samsung phone. What innovation there. I am a big Samsung fan but S3 is a disappointment on looks and design for its exterior.

Sorry you didn't like the article, i thought it was interesting to see a phone have a camera that good and somewhat surprised to see the htc phone rated that low. The phone was a hit at the last show because of the camera, they rated it a top 5 show item. I would think these people are more knowledgeable in the phone technology area, they certainly are smarter than mehttp://www.engadget.com/2012/06/18/nokia-808-pureview-united-states/ I did also see that engadget has their review up for the S3 and they say the S3 camera, except for a faster shutter, is not much better than the S2. They also say the camera is about the same as the htc camera. So while that makes the cameras both pretty good I guess they are not a huge leap forward.http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/20/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-review-shootout-atandt-vs-sprint/

Have a look at the quality in this picture I took, and explain how this can get beat out.
Sent from my EVO using XDA
Nice picture, no doubt, but if htc took the time to install a 3d camera on last years flagship phone, maybe a year from now they could install something similar to the nokia's camera and have something that is actually a "huge" improvement. We are now shown the technology is there and is being used and mass produced.

[Q] HTC One Camera Quality?

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing or noticing this, or if it's just me, but the pictures produced by my HTC One are often soft around the edges while sharp in the middle and seem to have a fair bit of noise. Attached are sample images. I have not unlocked the bootloader, it is completely bone stock.

Not sure if just me or if my expectations of the camera were higher than they should have been.
The camera is one of questionable execution. 4mp bundled with a high quality image sensor capable of 13mp and image cpu. I would not be surprised if HTC releases a camera update that lets the end user choose above 4mp.
I'm still skeptical of the camera but this phone is the most powerful I've owned.

Try taking down Sharpness to -1 or -2.
yea same dmobile1337. i dont know if i have to change some setting or what. every time i take a picture, i notice lots of noise and when i zoom in a little, clarity is significantly gone. i know a 4mp cant have the same res as a higher mp camera but after reading that the htc one camera is short of amazing, i am now starting to wonder if i got a defective unit.
wrong section
and i think the camera is fine give the devs some time and its going to get lots better the default camera on the onex was great after some tweaks it was OMFG !!! good
The softness is the ois. If you read anandtechs review he points this out. Its a software bug I imagine HTC will fix.

It is kind of awkward for HTC to brand an "enhanced" 4mp camera for it's "epic" phone, but then again compare it to other phones on the prepaid side that are still stuck with 5mp cameras and run on decent hardware, the quality is noticeably better on the HTC one.
The unit is not defective, I doubt HTC would have left out the option to utilize a high quality 4mp mode with the ability to shoot in higher resolution.

The Camera is Beautiful take i assure you. i mean its not no SLR but still :good: this is a picture of the virgin Mary statue i have in my home
I've had the same problem. If I take a picture of something, the entire picture doesn't seem in focus. There's usually a corner of the picture that's blurry or soft and it's really aggravating me. After what all the reviews said about the camera I'm just not seeing anything to be impressed about. It's also really noisy like someone else said.

Yeah, camera feels not much better than my note 2 personally, but I wish I still had it so I could compare and find out, as it is I've just got a samsung focus flash to compare with, and of course that offers no real comparison.

That picture looks great! Tell me though, are you stock or running a custom rom? The international base is a later revision than stock ATT and I read somewhere when I was drunk (so I guess it might have been nothing but I remember reading it...) that HTC made some camera improvements later on. Makes me wonder if those are in the base that the international version is running, or that the lion's share of custom roms available to us are on.
Not trying to gripe, I love everything about this phone. In fact, it's such a great device that I expect it is something I am doing wrong or something that HTC has already fixed that hasn't trickled down yet.
I've been pleasantly surprised with the quality of pictures, particularly in daylight.

Just finished unlocking the bootloader, installing a recovery and getting AR HD installed. It was clearly a random software issue that not everyone is experiencing, and has been corrected. My camera seems better than ever at the moment. Thank you all!
Its because the international ROMs have updated software. Past several ROM leaks improved the camera, video, and other stuff

I wonder how many months it will be until the AT&T model gets this simple update?

They are probably busy compatibility testing their preloaded apps or making updates and tweaks of their own for performance. Or making sure that if you use one of their preloaded apps on the new build it doesn't brick the device or something horribly sinister like that. I am an instant gratification type, but working in corporate america taught me that software updates are far from an overnight thing. I wish it had come out closer to release so I didn't have to install a custom ROM but I am sincerely glad I took the time to do so. Back button hold for menu is a real life saver in some apps and the camera improvements are worth it as well. If you choose to wait and keep stock, good things are right around the corner.

LG G2 or S4 (Camera is important)

Advice please, don't know which to go for, I know the battery and screen are probably better on the LG G2 but camera is important to me and I'm worried about the known framerate and focus issues and problems with lowlight pictures and videos on the LG G2.
So what would you recommend i do?
Thanks.

Hm. Camera.. Let the others tell you but for me..LG G2 has some of the worst cameras out there.
S3 camera is superior to G2 camera (softare perhaps..). S4 is also better than G2.
Speed, battery etc etc... is on the side from LG G2 .
I hope the camera would behave better when and if they update the software ( camera software ..? )

Afraid I agree with Bender. We have both G2 and S4 in the house. In every other way, G2 is king.
But Camera/Video my friend, goes to the S4.
Easily.
G2 ranges wildly from meh to very good. S4 stays at excellent all the time.

I have the G2 also as a secondary device ... Battery and speed are amazing but camera I believe its a hit and miss .. Sometimes I find them way overexposed. My wife has my old S4 and I believe its way better than the G2.
The G2 was running a stock G2 ROM not an AOSP ROM in case you are wondering.
With the mods on my N5 camera I've seen better quality pics in my N5 than my G2

G2 camera software is a mess.
HDR mode is not supporting flash. Video recording don't have manual focus or not even focus lock which makes focusing difficult in low light situations.
It took some time foe me to adjust which setting and mode for what lighting situation. After sometime, I got used to it and now my pictures are great in all scenarios. BUT, the shutter speed is less comparing to HTC ONE and S4. So, you need steady hands.
For an overall best USABLE camera in almost all situations especially low light, it's the HTC ONE. Then comes S4.

that gotta be the biggest joke. S3 had a very average camera even for it's days.
this thread should be taken with a huge grain of salt. G2 camera combined with Xdabbeb's mod (considering you understand the basics of photography) is the best phone camera experience you can get aside from few Nokia phones.
