Can't mount External SD Card - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried my S3 with 3 types of card now, 2gb SanDisk, 16gb Kingston and a 32gb Samsung Ultra Mobile. Each of varying classes.
I have used countless ROMS from stock to CM10 and AOKP/AOSP and I can't get the option to mount my card in the storage menu to highlight.
I have formatted them on my laptop as Fat32 and exFat but neither have worked yet they have worked in other Galaxy handsets.
Can any of you guys think of something I need to do to solve it or is it a case of a faulty phone?
Thanks in advance
Paul

If the card works with other GS3 but not yours then it is very high possibility your GS3 is faulty. Send it back to Samsung.

Tried it in different phone's and formatted it again but still didn't work???
The s3's faulty for sure. Get an exchange.

Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and send it back. If I get a chance I'll see if I can get someone to try it in their S3.

i have the same prob

Got my 64GB working
I upgraded from 32GBPNY to 64GB SanDisk. Couldn't mount the 64. Tried many things, but in the end, I formatted the 64 to ExFat because it became damaged and I don't have the fat32 option on my mac. Next I put in the 32, and made sure it was readable and mount/unmounted twice, just to make sure, then I put in my 64. After I saw details (card cap, and available), I went to the dev options and set "protect external SD" to on. Rebooted to Recovery and backed-up to ex sd. Once the back up completed I rebooted, went into the settings / more tab / storage. I am now able to mount and unmount at will. Hope this helps!

Anybody with mtd based room have any luck with 32GB memory cards?

I've read many posts about people with sd card problems, but my question is a little bit different. I have not had any problems until I decided to upgrade to a 32GB card. my new sd card works fine on the touchwiz based stuff, but won't mount on any mtd based ROM at all. So if anyone does have a working 32GB sd card on an mtd ROM, I'd like to know the brand and class rating.

Mine works fine. I have a class 4 Sandisk MicroSDHC
Hmm, then i'm at a loss since that's the brand and class rating of my 32GB card as well.

I'm using the glitch kernel RC v13, I've formatted it through there, but when ever I booted my phone it can't read my 32GB, I have to pop it out, then put it back in.. Its a lot of hassle because I have case mate a 2 layer case. Is your sd readable after a reboot?

I have a 16gb pny class 10 and it is working great with no issues. Although my stock 16gb san disk would have those problems. I would have to keep pulling it out or reformat it every other reboot...but it works fine in TW roms.
I've actually gone through two 32 GB cards both sandisk class 4. The first one I think had a overheating issue, one day I look at my phone and it says the SD card could not be recognized... Put it into 3 different computers/readers and nothing would recognize it at all... also used R-studio and no dice. Once I got my second one now I'm actually getting issues again with some of my data being erased randomly. Other than these problems it works completely fine in CM7 with Glitch V12. When will I learn to backup my stuff more often

Upgrading the internal 16GB to 32GB

Is there any way to upgrade the internal 16GB storage to a 32GB? I'm not referring to the external MicroSD card.
It might be possible i think samsung use SD cards as their internal storage.
Yh of course there is sell ur 16gb version nd buy the 32gb version
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
ORRRRRRRR you can try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772234
is it even possible ? unless there are motherboard with 32 gb for sale ?
This is not possible for the conventional person unless you have access to some pro level reflow ovens and flash chips.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
You need a laptop hard drive, super glue and a hammer.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
So is that basically a no, without serious mods to the phone?
Dude the internal flash memory is what's called smd in electronics (surface mounted device). Basically they are miniaturized semiconductor components with tiny solder pads which can only be joined with specialized equipment.
It's impossible to mess with it at home, that's why I sprung the extra cash for the 32gb version.

This is indeed a very interesting notion since the galaxy s3 was my very first smartphone and android I thought to myself that with the 16gb internal SD with an extra external SD card it should suffice but I was very wrong as apps only install in the internal SD card and I'm almost at my limits since I have alot of HD games and apps installed.

Just buy a 64 GB micro sd card.
Have a look at Directory Bind. This should solve your space issues (assuming you have a micro sd card in your phone).

Yeah but there's a mod to swap the Internal and external SD cards so you could buy a 64gb card and have lots of app storage. Its also a matter of time before the app2 SD gets sorted for s3
Oh well no worries, I can live with it

[Q] New 64 Gb micro Sd advice?

Hello All,
Like many others I have started purchasing my accessories early, so that they are ready when I get my Note 2 delivered to my door. I just received my micro SD card, and I have a few questions. I am wanting to have all my music and pictures loaded onto the SD card prior to the phone arriving. My only questions is would it be better to keep it in the format that it was sent in which was exfat, or should i format it to Fat32? I did do a search but I was unable to find a definitive answer which was best. It sounds like the note 2 can support both formats. Also most people leaned toward the exfat due to it not having the 4gb size file limitation, but I have not heard anyone successfully doing this even with it as exfat.
Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Matt
I would ask the international folks since they actually have the device.
That being said, I will use exFAT as long as their isn't a drop in I/O performance.

It is best to format your card in a phone. I would wait till you have the Note2. I know people that have had issues formatting cards on their computer and using them in the galaxy s3

In order for CWM recovery to read the ext sd, it will need to be reformatted to fat32...also your pictures wont show up in the gallery, atleast this is how the gs3 is and I dont think the gn2 will be any different.

Just a note about the sd cards for this phone. I talked to a Samsung rep last night and asked them what size, speed and file format works in the Note II. He said up to a 64GB Class 10 card formatted to FAT32 will work, and that it can be formatted in the phone.
I just wanted something official since I was reading so many conflicting posts on-line about what works and what doesn't.
I'm using 64gb formated exfat and have no issues. See the file sizes?

64gb class 10 micro SD support

I just bought a new 64gb for my note and it doesn't work. I tried to format it and couldn't and then I put it in my friends note 2 and it formatted and worked fine. I went into settings in my phone and it doesn't show anything at all in the external sd slot. I know this is a noobie question but, could you guys throw a dog a bone.?

When I got mine I could not get it to work, there are several threads around on this, most say to format it using your phone which did not work for me. As I recall I ended up formatting with my PC and I had to use FAT32 filesystem. The ext32 filesystem that is suppose to handle 4GB files would not work for me.

Sdcard

Has anyone ran into a issue with their sdcard and their Note2?
Last night I used my Note2 with no issues. Woke up this morning and noticed I had a alert message saying that the sdcard had been unexpectedly unmounted. Couldnt get the sdcard to remount. The phone wouldn't/couldnt reconize thw sdcard. And even my laptop couldn't reconize it. But the phone reconized a different sdcard, so I know the phone reader is still working. But this is a Lexar 64gb class 10 xc sdcard. Not some cheap trash. I lost my nandroid backups, movies, pics, etc....
Just glad I wasn't running the Jellybeans v18 on the sdcard swap selection. Then I wouldn't be able to use my phone period. Lmk if you have seen these sdcards go out before. Just beware!!!

What he's referring to is JellyBeans additional "SD Swap" feature which basically makes your phone see your SD Card as the internal storage. I don't know why he thinks his phone wouldn't work though, as with any phone the Internal Storage/SD Card is not required for the device to operate.

I've ran into this issue with Lexar jump drives and had to use command prompt in W7 to make them work again. It always happened when I would write a Linux distro to the drive to use as a bootable disk.
The fix requires you completely wiping the drive, which the two jump drives in question that I always have issues with are actually micro SD card readers with whatever size card in them.
Here is the link explaining how to fix it:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/219693/unable-to-format-usb-stick-to-full-capacity/
What I have to do though is select the disk drive and once in it I have to use the Create Partition Primary command instead of selecting a partition because on my drives there are no partitions and it won't even show up under Computer most of the time. Give it a shot and see if it gets you back up and running, if not you may have a faulty card that Lexar needs to replace.

See I've never experienced any issues with either of my SanDisk 64 GB Class 10 and neither has anyone else I know that owns one. I wonder if they had a bad batch?
I haven't seen anything about other manufacturers 64GB Class 10 cards having issues yet but it is either something to do with Class 10 cards or a bad batch.

I reformatted both, but 16 gig will show blank card on the wife's phone until unmounted remounted. Both less than 6 months old, on the same day. I blame the solar flares, what else can I blame it on?
