Missing features in Xperia S (coming from SGS2)... suggested work-arounds? - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hey guys,
I recently had to switch from my SGS2 (much loved, but ultimately un-useable) to the Sony Xperia S.
This is my first Sony Android phone, and my third Android phone. I like to think that I am pretty well versed with the goings-on of the Android OS... but as can be expected - there is a little adjusting required when switching to a new device.
I am going to make a list of feature which I had grown pretty fond of during my time with the SGS2 - which I cannot seem to find in the Xperia S (I will also add general issues which hopefully you guys might have some solutions for). Hopefully you guys reading this will be able to advise and suggest solutions to these listed ailments, also feel free to add your own queries to this thread and I'll add them to the list.
1. No quick setting in notification bar pull-down (only link to system settings screen)
Solution 1 - Use 3rd party app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hb.settings&feature=more_from_developer#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEwMiwiY29tLmhiLnNldHRpbmdzIl0.
2. No USB mass storage mode.
3. No task killer.
4. No outgoing call confirmation (option for pop-up dialoge box to confirm outgoing call)
5. Weather widget does not support current location (GPS).
I will update and edit this list as the post is replied to - and when we find more issues.
Please note: some of the missing features I'm listing might have been from 3rd party apps which I had installed on my SGS2 rather than feature of my SGS2... if this is the case - please let me know.
I look forward to everyones input and feedback.
Cheers.

Switch too this rom, and you have all your missed things.

Use custom ROM it will fix everything.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I am a little hesitant to start bootloader unlocking/rooting/flashing and such.
There is so much info to take in regarding the process, I'm worried I might miss something or get the wrong information. There are plenty of tutorials - but its almost as if there are too many. One tutorial will be teaching something, and it will say "Before we begin... make sure you have read this [LINK]", and it all seems a bit much.
I guess you could say that I dont have the stomach for custom ROM flashing, I'm just overwhelmed with all the technical info.
Can you guys suggest a simpler tutorial or break-down the process to reduce the steepness of the learning curve?
Thanks for any help.

first i think also... but it isnt so hard
just go on step by step, read just for next step and do the things in the step and then go to the next step... then it isnt so much information and you don't forget something
and after you unlock the bootloader and flash the first Rom/kernel with working root, you know what the process was good for

1. For quick settings use app from market
2. There is no mass storage mode
3. Hold the home icon for task killer
4. No, but why do you need that?

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll have a think about flashing a custom ROM, I'll let you know what I decide on.
1. What is the Quick Settings app?
2. OK
3. Holding home button brings up the recent app list - then you can remove apps from this list. Is this the same as the task killer? the SGS2 had both features.
4. I just thought it was a handy option.
Cheers.

Task killer isn't the best thing. You only need it when you're really out of memory. Just swiping away is enough.
Quick settings is or an app or a mod that does the same thing from power controls on GS2.

You can have toggles in notifications. You only need to unlock bootloader and use a custom kernel to flash SystemUI.apk from xperia GX through CWM.
To unlock your bootloader follow these instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1527159
then flash the advanced custom kernel, which is the simplest one, using these:

I always hear this warning - android manages its own RAM and such.
But without trying to sound like a smart arse... what should we do when the facebook app is buggin out and running at 50% CPU usage - causing the device to lag and overheat?

Three simple questions

Hello folks.
I want to ask two questions->
* I hid some apps (dirty minds should not think about that....) in order to hide the tools i used for customizing my hpone. I hid them by opening app drawer, going to options->hide apps. But now i cant find any option to show them. Can anyone tell me where its located?
* When is final version of JB going to release for galaxy s3? Every rom has a new update almost every week. I am tired of updating my rom and installing things again and again. But now i have decided to wait till final release. So when is final JB going to be released?
* What is meaning of "ZipAlign". I see many roms zip align apps. How is it useful? What is its meaning?
Tnx to helper.

Obviously not that simpel or you wouldn`t have to post these questions:
1. Search with root explorer or similar app for that file
2. Official JB will roll out within 3-4 weeks i guess, maybe earlier leaks on sammobile
3. Zipalign, see http://developer.android.com/tools/help/zipalign.html
Use the search button, all your questions could have been googled and anwered under 2 minutes mate, but off course it is much more convenient for you to let others search for your answers

If you are in TW launcher go to settings, applications, press menu button (left below next to home) and select app preferences and restore original settings. That should make your hidden apps visible again.

[MOD]remove power save notification icon [rooted only]

Hi
I'm not a developer, but a good observer and tester.
I found a clear and safe method (at least for me) to get ride of the annoying notification icon of power save even after booting.
I'm very sorry if this method was already founded (because i didn't do a deep search), so please guys you can tells me if this method exist already or not when you find it elsewhere.
OK, for this mod we need :
1. unlocked rooted hox+ (at least international, but i went some AT&T guys to test it for me) and i think it will wok for them also because this mod affect only the "com.htc.htcpowermanager".
2. Install "system tuner" from play store or any other apps that can modified the events in system apps (but i recommend the system tuner because it is free and very easy to modify the events).
3. Go to system apps tab and then htcpowermanager (power app) as shown in 1st photo.

Then go to details as below
Then go to the following event:
"powersaver.powersavernotificationreceiver" and unchecke it as below
Then reboot directly.
That it, after reboot you will find that there is no icon in the notification area for power saver.
Thank

I don't think this is the same solution because you freeze the power app completely (that's means you will loss the entire benefits of this amazing option in jelly bean, from reduce UI power supply to disabled the entire return vibration of the device).
But with my method, it will disabled only notification event without disabling the functionality of this amazing app
Thanks

its already mentioned in the description of the 1st post in red marker "alimentation is the French name of power" and you can also search for the same icon (green battery with white power supply sign on it) in the system app list
but you must sure it has the package name com.htc.htcpowermanager as in the 2nd screen-shot

At first the power save mode thing being persistent bugged me. But to be honest I actually like using it now. Unless it's a rare occasion that I'm gaming or something, I dont really notice the difference when it's on. but my battery sure notices. it does a decent job of extending battery life without really hurting user experience that much. of course if you're very frequently attached to USB and constantly charging at work or something it's a non-issue and is probably annoying... but especially on weekends if I'm out running errands all day it comes in handy.
That being said, it's great that you found this. most of the time HTC Sense stuff is so interdependent on random elements from stuff here and there that you don't expect. so it's cool that this option to disable it exists.

a complete and functional ROM

Hi all, i'm opening a thread here because i cant somewhere else .... (sorry bad english)
i've flashed few times different ROMs (and relative kernel) , and i can say that every time the last user, like me, must sacrifice an old function
to gain a new one , changing the rom...
here i want to make a list of "must have" functions/mods (imho) for what should be a good cooked android ROM:
(maybe it already exist, but for now i cant find it... please say if you know)
- Volume rocker moves cursor when keyboard is open
- Contacts and dialer apps should be linked, or best, a single app like in past (maybe 2.3.6?). It's boring chaning app every time.
- the dialer app, during a call, should have the button to record the conversation.
- the main launcher of the ROM should be turnable in landscape, a lot of roms need to have the launcher replaced for this reason, if the user need it...
also rotation for all apps should work in all degree 90 - 180 - 270
- a "lock" for the rotation siwtch: if locked in landscape, the phone and apps will stay in landscape also if the phone is vertical, covering the smartstay function also while without light
- multiwindow (from sgs3 and notes) okay, its not that useful for sgs2, but sometimes it could be...
- toggles in status bar should be visible with notifications, and the status bar should be closed only manually (boring when by using a switch the bar close automatically)
- the possibility to add as much as possible switches/toggles in the status bar (like adding hotspot , smartstay, torch , etc )
- while lockscreen open but locked, if home button (hardware button) hold pressed, the torch switch on, if done again > off .... maybe also use the same way for another function....
- flash and soft "menu" and "back" buttons , usable as notification leds
- camera: having both! standard camera with all functions working goods AND the "stolen" camera from nexus devices that have photo sphere...
(like me, someone could just skip a ROM because the lacks of photo sphere ... lol)
with the possibility to select the destination folders of photos and videos
- usb otg working , and if possible an already support for NTFS format ...
- NO bloatware
- more! say your opinion...
i voluntarily havent talk about colors, type of lockscreen, base personalizations: they come after!
In the base we need a ROM with all the functions, its sad jumping forward and back to ROM having always holes and lacks of functions....
I hope someone will understand me
what you guys think?
there is some other "must have" to add in this list? (probably yes i cant remember all now)
it would be fantastic if someone make roms like this, of if it already exists, ugh.. lemme know!
[EDIT]
tried time ago AIO-X-TremeXD Fully Reloaded with Bullets ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1999623 )
good rom.
multiwindows working enough good. no photosphere
dialer and contact apps "linked" together, but there is a small wait time when passing from one to other. it is possible to record conversations.
i changed this rom because it had a problem: lockscreen freeze when wifi on
[EDIT]
tried ReVolt JB ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1755884 )
volume rocker for keyboard's cursor work
no multiwindows, no photosphere
dialer and contact apps are separated. during a call the dialer app is missing the record function
toggles on status bar are somewhat un-intuitive to use, imho. and are separated from notifications. torch toggle dont work

we should blacklist the certain activities, not the whole app.

Really nice !! Working good on Nexus 5 4.4.4 my little cusin will be mad because he won't able to mess with my phone while he is gameing
So this basically is Child Mode implementation if WP8? Or restricted profile in Android tablets right?
Great work for parents >)
Great app
Hi,
This is a great app and is working well but I just wanted to report a slight bug... if in kids mode the homebutton on my Samsung Galaxy S5 is held down then Google Now launches. This isn't so much of an issue but if a search is performed then Chrome opens and the kids are able to get on the Internet and mess with bookmarks etc.
Thanks for your great work on this

Hello,
On devices before s5 , long clicking home button started recents.
Didn't know S5 does that.
I attached below another version that should've fix your issue, care to try please and report back ?
Thank you for your feedback

Think of it as a launcher, only the apps you want in it can be seen.
What are the soft keys that you are using?

What is exactly happening ?
Is it reverting to home screen, recent screen or google search ?
Can you explain a bit more ?
Thanks for making this module! I was thinking that this is just what is needed using Xposed after looking into the parental controls that are in Amazon tablets, and things like the OLPC tablet, and Nabi.
I hope that this can grow into a full featured parental control app with usage time limits, and tracking of what apps are used most. Then no matter what android device I use can be safe from the kids messing up the device, or going where they shouldn't.
If the app usage tracking is added, it could serve much the same purpose as the OLPC tablet does in helping to see what your children are interested in. You could make available many different subject learning apps and see which your kids use most, and help encourage them to explore more deeply into that subject. All without having to report this information to some huge multinational company like google, amazon, or MS.
Thanks for the module! Has potential, however it isn't quite working on my Nexus 4 N5X ROM 4.4.4. I am able to add shortcuts and enable kids mode, but when I press the home key it takes me to my stock home screen not the kids mode home screen!

[APP][XPOSED] FingerLock - protect your apps with the fingerprint reader

I present you FingerLock.
FingerLock is an Xposed module compatible with Note 4 which gives you the ability to protect your apps with the fingerprint.
FingerLock does not need to run background services. When you launch a locked app, FingerLock detects the event and asks for your fingerprint without impacting performances or battery.

This is great thank you. Works perfect.
Would like it a lot more if I could set it to relock the apps when the phone locks

1. nice catch! I have tried it and you are right! I will have a look at it for sure and the problem is that something is lost during the transition.
2. Yes, you are right and it is a sort of compromise between a running background service and something that is launched only when it is needed.
I'll try to explain you how FingerLock work.
When you open a locked app, the locked app calls FingerLock and kill itself. If you pass the fingerprint check, FingerLock will reopen the now unlocked app. So your feeling is not bad

Sure! I'll do it as soon as I solve the small problems that are still present.
I think it's better to have a solid base prior of building features that could potentially add new bugs
I instal this app i select yahoo mail galery and whatsapp but when i try to open its open and not ask for fingerprint
Ani ideea why or wat i do rong

Have you installed xposed framework? If yes, is the module activated and phone rebooted after installing it?

Hello mate,
I was wondering how is this better than the app called finger security? I will choose one of them based on your answer.

I can't tell you which is better
The concept of FingerLock is basically one. Being able of locking apps without having to constantly run a background service on your phone.
This is why FingerLock doesn't work without xposed.
If you have more questions I'm here.
