[Q] Help me get started with making apps - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I only got 10 posts on this forum and I'm kinda new to coding stuff, but I got experience with rooting, flashing, and theming. Just so you know I'm not all noobish to Android.
Now to the point. I have a great idea for a launcher that I came up with (not sure if I should share it with you guys). I want to base it on the stock Jelly Bean launcher and it will have some UI mods/changes.
I DON'T have any experience with Java yet though.
It would be very kind if someone could give me a few tips or something to get me going. I followed a guide on developers.android.com where you built a simple app that shows a message when you write something and hit Send.
So please help me to get started with developing apps.
Many thanks
//Christian

Thanks mate, thanks for taking your time.
More tips are welcome For example, can I mod the stock JB launcher and publish it without getting sued, and where can I get it to import it into Eclipse?

Yes you can mod the stock JB launcher and publish it without getting sued, that's the beauty of Android and it being opensource is you can take an application like the stock JB launcher and modify and change it to your hearts content.
Searching around a little more these video's might answer more of your questions:
How to make your own android launcher / program your own custom launcher
How To Retrieve The Source Code From A Compiled Android .Apk Or Application

[SEARCH] SOSA HQ + Dev Search! (Pix - 4/21/12)

Welcome to SOSA HQ for the E3D, though our roms will be featured in the development section, this will be home to all SOSA news, links and info (which will stay up to date with our website once it is built). So to get a few things out of the way:
1. What is SOSA (the name/rom/team)
- SOSA stands for "Supreme OS Android" and is soon to be the greatest AOSP rom provider in the android community. The goal is to create a fully functional (freeza pointed this out, 4G AND 3D not gonna happen, and this will not be 4.0 based so don't ask lol) android environment that houses performance, visual elegance and superb functionality in order to add much needed flair to the overall system and user approval. Our team is not a bunch of geniuses who eat Java, sleep C++ and crap XML, but rather a group of people that love android and aspire to exceed the knowledge of the typical user. We want to contribute to the community in the best way possible.
2. Why AOSP.?
- For one, the forums are loaded with sense roms, second we don't have to put up with HTC's crappy overloaded UI, and 3 AOSP is the way Android should be, raw, sleek and OEM skinless.
3. How many people will you allow on the team.?
- As many of you that wanna join as long as you show a commitment to this.!
4. How do I know if I am officially on the team.?
- once we establish an email/gtalk communication route and I send you the project goals email, you're in .
5. I have more questions, how can I ask.?
- pm/Gmail/gtalk me at [email protected]
Bookmark and subscribe to this to stay updated.! Currently, we need the following things on the team:
1. Devs (can't have enough)
2. Media team
- wallpaper maker(s)
- boot anim. Maker(s)
- audio producer(s) (notifications, etc.)
- Xllusion is supplying us with a live wallpaper suite.!
3. Web designer(s)
4. Social Media director(s)
5. Maybe more I can't think of.!
Thanks for your support.!
Team SOSA
Update: April 20th
Pics: Rom features part one.!
Let me begin by saying I want to be a rom Dev and not a chef. I don't wanna just load an rom w/ apps and call it a rom. Though the apps featured in the pics below will be in the rom, this is just giving a preview of some cosmetic changes that I feel need to be made along with some apps that will be a nice touch. Comment and tell me otherwise if they will not or give your professional opinion. Thank you.!

I've kinda always disliked the stock clock on the AOSP roms, so Im loading the rom with these three clocks instead. They offer a more visually appealing presentation and cater to both the digital and analog clock user.
2. Live Wallpapers
Xllusion is providing us with live wallpapers. They are customizable and dont strain the life out of your battery!
Media Center:
Before anyone asks, no RealPlayer wont be in this rom. This is to provide a concept of what I would like to be our Media Center on the Rom itself. Rather than have a gallery, music player and video player, its better to just have one app that houses all three (this will have to be built and may not be included on the first release depending on the time frame). Also, it will shave a couple megabytes off of the ROM. I also plan on combining the Dialer, Contacts and Messages into one, a couple "tool" apps (i.e. calculator, calender, etc.) into one in order to really downsize. My goal Rom size is 70MB (80 MB max) packed. This will take time but it can be done
Here again I say I am NOT a chef-style dev-in-training who just wants to give you a ROM packed with non-stock apps, but the AOSP roms are admittedly bland in visual appeal so these few minor changes will add to the user experience in the positive way. I have contacted all creators of these apps (minus minimal clock's dev) and have complete consent of the developer to use them (and have filed my emails for proof).
small update, but a good one nonetheless

I'll join the bandwagon. I know ROM development to a degree. I've made a couple test ROMs for E3D and OG Evo but never actually released any. Don't know **** about compiling kernels though, haha. I use Windows and Linux. Once we get a professional environment running, you'd have my phone number for 24/7 assistance.

Depends on what your wanting to do if you wanna pull bloat that part is easy.. If you wanna keep sense in that is easy too.. To make sense less you will need to do some reading on what needs to be edited..
Theme part it's self takes alot of time... Smali edits can be a pain at times because it can be a long log of stuff..
XML is easier to edit and read..
The dev section has info on how to do alot of stuff just need to read some of the guides on things..
I don't play with kernels since I prefer to keep things close to stock and not over clock..
Also I will find that guys kitchen which works well for new folks who wanna learn the very basics
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5626300#post5626300
Read that also if your on windows you will need CYGWIN installed then the kitchen the guide explains how to do it..
Works well for the basic..
Apktool is used to decompile apk files and to edit xml or smali or 9.png files then you can recompile when done.. You will need to resign em .. On most tho you can save the orignal sig

Agreed, smali is a pain buts its pretty much the heart of the app itself. And once we get a real stable rom out there, we will need to set up communication routes (Gmail, gtalk, numbers, etc.) Amongst one another. I think for now though gtalk an email is fine, doesn't require much and is very easy to keep in touch with it. Thx for support ppl

Cant add Multi View compatible apps to multi view bar *SOLVED*

Hey guys, up until a month ago I have been an avid iOS user until I recently made the glorious switch tk Android. I have figured most everything out except how to add apps that are multiview compatible to the multiview bar. I've tried drag and drop and a few other things but none seem to work. I was really hoping someone could help me, thanks in advance!

Multiview functionality is not part of android operating system. That is a propietary technology from samsung, and the applications that can be use in that mode have to be made to do so.

With stock you can only do a small handful of apps (and not all that useful either). But if you use certain Roms (I've been using Jelly Beans for a few months) some come with all apps enabled. I think there is also another way to hack it but probably requires at least root.

Re: Cant add Multi View compatible apps to multi view bar
Yes, there are mods to do so, or you could pretty much flash any TW ROM under the development section and have all apps available in multi window.

Okay, thanks! What about already compatible apps such as Chrome and Google Maps?? How do I add those to the multiview bar?
Also, I apologize for the "newbie-ness" of my questions, im brand new to Android.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
I don't think that Verizon lets you add any apps to the multiwindow view. If you want more apps in there, then you can flash a rom. If you like the look of your phone currently, then I suggest one of the CleanROMs, either the ACE, Verizon Special Edition. If you are stock and you don't want to flash a rom, then you can try this mod here.
Personally I would recommend that you flash a rom if you haven't already. There are so many great roms out there that unlock features that verizon didn't want us to have, or other things like the ability to make the phone look more like stock android.
Re: Cant add Multi View compatible apps to multi view bar
Hello, im a new android user (switched over from iOS last week) and I just had one question for you. Im fairly familar with Linux, so the first thing I did when I got my phone was obviously unlocking the bootloader and rooting it. Im running a stock ROM woth the Team Win Recovery and I was wondering how I would flash from my current ROM to the CleanROM VZW SE 1.5. As you can see below, I have the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II. I apologize for the "newbie-ness" of my question, thank you for your time!

David

I'd recommend picking a rom based on the first posts in the thread for each one (in the development section), and then read as much as possible in that thread. This is my first android phone too, but after reading the Jelly Beans thread (yes all of it, but I'm crazy like that) I feel I have a good grasp on everything. I'm no expert, but I'm not a newb either, and I've only tried Beans and Cleanrom thus far.
Now I just wanna get 10 (useful) posts so I can post on Beans' thread and thank him! :cyclops:

I was looking at the CleanROM VZW SE 1.5 but I am afraid of bricking my device. I was hoping someone had some useful tips to avoid this
What I'm trying to say is that there are TONS of such tips on this board, but they are already spelled out much better than I could explain, so you really have to put some time in and do the research. You should read the entire thread about that rom, and also read the thread on unlocking all the way through. Everything you need to know is there. It's very rare to completely brick one of these things.

[Q] Custom frameworks in rom building.[resolved]

Hey there, I'm currently building a rom based on aosp and would like some help or being pointed in the right direction for including xposed modules in the build? I have attempted to look on Google and the forums and i believe I'm using the wrong terms or just missing it each time.
Thankyou in advance to anyone who can tell me what to search, or even point me in the right direction.
For some reason the forums say this is the wrong location to post a question, I'm not sure where else this is meant to go, so I apologise if breaking rules.
------------
Solved
Xposed cannot easily be included in ROM without issues, but you can easily edit the source to resemble the required xposed mods I.e navbar size etc.
/frameworks/base/core/res/res/

You can include xposed but without activation the usual way of putting the apk in folder and adding to XML file with app list
Or similar
Thank you

Hey there, I'm currently building a rom based on aosp and would like some help or being pointed in the right direction for including xposed modules in the build? I have attempted to look on Google and the forums and i believe I'm using the wrong terms or just missing it each time.
Thankyou in advance to anyone who can tell me what to search, or even point me in the right direction.
For some reason the forums say this is the wrong location to post a question, I'm not sure where else this is meant to go, so I apologise if breaking rules.

[q]What programing skills do i need for compiling android from source

Hello i would like to make my first steps as an android developer..i know this **** is difficult and i know you should learn many staff about os stractures etc and of cource a good understanding of some programming[c java]... but i am intrigued by those things[i am also starting my studies about programming in university] but i dont know where to start and what exactly should i learn to have a good understanding about android and be ready to start compiling. building and porting android source to some devices[i know it will take some time but i dont care as i really like programming ]
[ i know some basic stuff about roms kitchens logcat porting and i have really basic level of programing skills [ but i suppose that is not enough]
The only skill required for compiling a rom is reading. There are thousands of tutorials about how to do this.
Porting ROMs to different devices will require some more skill, I think most of the difficulty is in the C part although I personally don't have experience with this.
Most important thing is java
if you successfully compiled ROM and found bugs like FC
you will find it very hard to fix
learn java then continue and then follow the guide by @jackeagle and his awesome team

Yup
But you must don't forget
android 50% of it is apps
Java required for help in fixing bugs in your ROM
For example if you have FC while choosing an option in settings
What you should do ?
Let's think a bit
Settings at the it is an apk file
apk = android app = written with java = can fixed with java
don't go to final phase fast
Start from zero and learn Java and then you can start with ROM development
and then Learn c/c++ then start with kernel development
Do that and make your life easier
you will find that hard a bit in the begins (nothing easy in this life and nothing impossible)
but at the end you will find your self an expert
Hit thanks if i helped you
