trying to push update and bricks? - HTC Rezound

I need some serious help. My ex-boyfriend rooted my phone, all I know is that it is s-off, locked, and rooted. Now it is trying to update to Ice cream sandwich all the time and it freezes my phone, or makes it shut off and occasionally bricks my phone. So I constantly have to keep pulling my battery and restarting my phone. What should I do? How do I get it to stop trying to push the update and messing up my phone? Or is there a way to get the update to go through?

It depends on the goal you're looking for.
If you want ICS, flash this: http://db.tt/M09JDsfq
Re-name it PH98IMG and place it on the root of your SD card, then reboot into boot loader.
If you want to stay with GB, I think there is an OTA blocker out there, not sure where though.
ICS is better IMO.

Ok so im back and im hoping you can still help. I want ICS but im unsure about how to get it. i dont have a root folder on my sd card so i dont know what to do. My phone was rooted using rEZoundRoot-v1.5-The Driver1. Then it was s-off'd using Rezound_SOFF_All-In-One_V1.0 by Hasoon. Then amon ra recovery was flashed. Nothing was flashed using the sd card.

"Root of the sdcard" isn't referring to a folder name. The root of the sdcard means its on the sdcard, but not in any folder.

Download the latest SuperSU zip (not SuperUser), put it on your SDCard, boot into recovery, and choose to install zip.
Edit: here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
Download the "CWM installable zip" link

I aparently no longer have a recovery. when i boot into recovery all i get is a picture of a phone with a red " ! "..... so how do i reinstall amon ra recovery? and why do i need to download the cwm?

Go download TWRP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613576 and follow the instructions. Make sure you remove any file also named PH98IMG.zip on your SD card as to not confuse them. From here you should be good so long as you are actually S OFF
1. Download the version for your firmware version NOT ROM VERSION
2. Flash the zip via PH98IMG.zip. If you want to flash via fastboot, use the command "fastboot flash recovery nameoffile.img" if and pull the recovery.img out of the PH98IMG.zip
Also side note, make sure you are in fact on GB and not on a leaked build of ICS before flashing by going into "about phone" under settings.

I believe Damsel has just flashed the latest leak...see an earlier post.
Damsel: if you want to stick with AmonRA recovery you can get it here. I offer it because that is what you were using before. (Ctrl-S to download, rename ph98img.zip and flash)

ugh ok well now im really confused. ok so if all i did was flash a leak where do i get the real one. and shouldnt i wait to flash the recovery until i slash the correct isc? and i tried flashing the supersu that carngeX told me to but nothing happend on the boot screen. and i just tried flashing amon and nothing happend. i just put that on my memory card and boot into hboot right?

Yes you can hold off on the recovery. The one I gave you needs to be renamed ph98img.zip, placed on the sd card. Then boot into bootloader (battery pull, volume down, power) and it will pick it up and ask you to update.
***EDIT*** ooops you are s-off, so amon ra SHOULD flash if you follow the directions above.
****EDIT **** Regarding the leak...the leak IS what was pushed to owners but with global capabilities and some other fixes. You should keep it...

Make sure it is named ph98img.zip vs. ph98img.zip.zip and that it is on the ext-sd card (the one that you can remove) .
Not sure what you mean by "all it did was show the green". If it scans for ph98img files and doesn't find this one, then its been mis-named or put in the wrong place.

Puzzling Please try getting the ph98img file from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339679 , down near the bottom of post 1 and give that a try.
to be honest, I'm thinking you've got it named PH98IMG.zip.zip . Perhaps you've checked it....view it in windows in the 'details' mode where the file extensions ae shown. Or right mouse click on it and check file name in "properties"..
If you're positive its named correctly, cool, but right now I'm at a loss if this other download doesn't work for you.
FYI: I was wondering about the case sensitive issue so I tried using ph98img.zip vs. PH98IMG.zip and it works.

Here is amon ra 3.15 no need to rename it's already named correctly just put on your SD card and flash in bootloader.

Yay, good news. For pointers, I would just look/read some of the info regarding various ROMS in the Dev section. You should go into recovery and back up what you have now, though. Then, you can flash a rom and if you don't like it, just restore the backup!.... Find an app like titanium backup to backup your apps so it makes restoring things after changing roms a bit easier. I always to to the playstore online from my computer and restore apps that way, and use titanium to just restore the data.....other than that...don't let boyfriends mess with your phone!:

How to flash PG05IMG.zip (new radio) with Clockwork?

This seems like a silly question, but I put the PG05IMG.zip on my SD card, reboot into clockwork, pick my file from the SD card and it fails to flash.
I dug around in some of the RUU threads but didn't see anything tutorials. Any tips on how to flash it?
I'm trying to flash just the radio by the way. Thanks!
Put it on the root of your sdcard, boot into the bootloader. It will load the .zip and ask if you want to update radio.

Wrong section. And wrong method. Clockwork has nothing to do with it. You do it in bootloader
Put the file on your SD card...don't put it in any folders, and reboot into the bootloader (not cwm), it'll find the update and ask you to install it.
oops - didnt see that someone already told you how..now I'll probably get yelled at by some of the cranky people here on XDA..lol
don't ever flash with CWM, Hboot only, dunno what happens but its probably not good

nothing really happened when I first did that by mistake, I don't think CMW can use the file anyway.
If you haven't figured out how to do it already, this is how.
1. Put the .IMG file in SD card main directory and then reboot to bootloader. ( use ./adb reboot bootloader on your command terminal or some other voodoo method you can think of)
2. While in bootloader, navigate up/down using volume buttons. Select with power button. Choose Bootloader (default option I believe) and I think it should flash.
3. Wait for it to be done (The screen should tell you something like that) and then choose reboot option
4. DONE
Thanks fellas. I wish the posts I kept reading that said "hboot" would have said bootloader instead. Update is flashing right now.
Great development thread!!!!!

[Q] im having problems after s-off

i installed the clockworkmod that comes with the revolution and i did the superuser part to grant me full acess so i tried installing twrp-shooter-1.0.0.img but it keep saying
--insatlling: /sdcard/PG86IMG-twrp-shooter-1.0.1.zip
finding update package...
opening update package...
Installing update package...
Installation aborted.
what im i doing wrong should i just stick with clockworkmod or keep trying to install twrp-shooter-1.0.0.img or is it installed already
Download TWRP as the PC86IMG.zip. Put it in the root of the sd card and boot into bootloader and let it scan for the update. It will ask to apply update and select yes. Much easier that way. Make sure it is all caps and name exactly PC86IMG.ZIP and not PC86IMG.ZIP.ZIP.

You don't flash that in recovery. Your supposed to rename the file to PG86IMG.zip ,put the file on the root of your sdcard, and go to your bootloader where it should find the img and update automatically.
I guess I can't type fast enough.
You could also flash it using fastboot, not 100% on commands but its something like fastboot flash recovery xxxx.img

Jayharper was correct with his instructions. Just make sure that when you download the file, you rename it to PG86IMG.zip, because it has some extra stuff in the file name when you download it. Just be sure it's exactly PG86IMG.zip, and then boot to bootloader. It'll find it and ask you to update.

please help im almost there...............
make sure you didn't rename it to PC86IMG.ZIP.zip
make sure you can see your file extensions, you might have them hidden, and you are accidentally renaming the file with a double extension
If the bootloader update method isn't working for you and you have ADB and fastboot set up correctly just follow the instructions on the 3rd post of this thread.

Not only that, Team Wins' Recovery isn't a piece of crappy like clockwork. Plus the visuals are nice too. I backed my phone up for the first time with clockwork and tried to restore, what do you know? It never backed my phone up. Then I was stuck with a ROM-less phone.Screw CWM.

i don't know if you got help or not yet but CWM isn't working properly yet. you need to download teamwin recovery (its kickass) and rename the file to PG86img and put it in the root of your sd card.
Then power off your phone(make sure fast boot is off), pull out the battery, put it back in and power into Bootload (Vol dwn,Power) and it will run a script for the pg86 file and Click yes to update. Then Reboot.
Enjoy

phone wont boot anymore, help needed

When i was trying to boot into recovery mode it failed and it gave a superuser error. At this moment i had leedroid rom evo 3d gsm that is s-off. When i still had stock rom i never had this error but it seems like it was there all the time with the leedroid rom. Well so i was trying to boot into recovery. Tried it with power button and volume down button at same time, but this was failing. So i did it with rom manager. I used rom manager before when i installed leedroids rom. But now it didnt boot into recovery. I tried installing superuser again but it didnt seem to make any difference. with rootchecker i checked if i had root acces but it seemed i lost root acces :S. after retrying a couple of times my phone didnt boot back to the leedroid rom. I was trying a lot of things, with and without sd and sim. After about 20 reboots i tried power and volume down to go to bootloader and know it loaded. At bootloader start it loads some things and i saw no image blalbla dont really know what it meant. I tried to go to recovery but it wont boot, i get a white screen with htc and wont load anything. I tried all other options in bootloader too, to check if anything works but even a factory reset failed.
For me it looked like somehow my rom is f*cked and now i cant go to recovery mode somehow. I have rom on my sd so if i could go to recovery i could still flash. Does anyone know how i still might get to recovery mode or is there another way to still flash another rom. Maybe there are some people who can tell me more about leedroids rom, are there more people who got trouble with root acces?
anyone who might be able to help plz let me know, im so frustrated right now because i cant use my phone, i even need to think about a way to wake me up this morning because i always used my phone for alarm
That is a very easy to fix problem. First, download Clockworkmod recovery for your device (evo 3D GSM) or another recovery.
CWM 5.2.0 Shooteru: http://www.mediafire.com/?5kdr0c7xux2c64p
After download/finding the recovery, rename it to PG86DIAG. (or whatever it tries to scan for in bootloader. If its 2 things, it is the bottom one)
Place the file on your SD card somehow. (in your case you would need to take out the SD card and put it in another phone/adapter)
Boot into bootloader with volume down + power and it should scan for the file. When it asks if you want to do the update, press yes. After the recovery is installed, press power to reboot.
Do a battery pull while you are on the splash screen. Reboot back into bootloader with vol down + power and click on recovery. Wipe everything and flash the rom again. Reboot and you should be able to load the ROM with root and everything.

Oke i did what you said but when i boot into bootloader nothing has changed. It doesnt ask if i want to update anything. And if i go to recovery and try to boot it keeps hanging at the white screen with htc

Do you mean it might be other name i have to make it? How do i know this?

It is probably a different name.
When you boot into bootloader, it scans for 2 files and says not found, right?
The second file it scans for is the one you want to rename it to.
hmke, ye it scans for files but its going fast so cant see it very well. I see about 5 things get scanned
oke first thing it scanned is called PG86DIAG.zip, 2nd is PG86DIAG.nbh, 3th is PG86IMG.zip, 4th is PG86IMG.nbh, 5th is PG86IMG.tar, 6th is PG86IMG.aes, 7th is PG86IMG.enc
All this things are scanned and then it says no image
From what I can read if you lost root then you are s-on on the bootloader right? if so installing recovery through bootloader wont work... check if you have S-on or S-off on bootloader if you have s-on you will need to use a official update to restore your phone...

So it acts as if there is no .zip at all? Like it says "No image found"?
Double check if its a zip and the file is named properly. If it doesn't recognize it, there is a problem with your SD card/bootloader.

Good catch on that one.
If you don't put it directly on the root of your sd card then the boot loader will not be able to find the zip and flash it.
Oke thx, i finally booted into recovery . I first had to delete the .zip again because it was trying to update again when i didnt. Im so happy now , couldnt done this without your help so i will push the thx button few times^^

There are 2 methods that currently work to install recovery. I will only discuss one because it is the easier one for noobs. If you know how to install it via fastboot, go ahead. You probably are above this thread knowledge wise.
Recovery Installation Method: The PH98IMG.zip
This method uses a file called PH98IMG.zip to install the custom recovery. This is the simplest and doesn't require knowledge of fastboot, adb, and doesn't need a computer.
1) Download the PH98IMGICSNEWOTA.zip of the recovery. Rename it to PH98IMG.zip
2) Connect your phone to your PC (if you downloaded the PH98IMG.zip directly from your phone's browser, use a file manager to duplicate these steps)
3) Enable USB Mass Storage (as if you wanted to copy a file to the memory card).
4) Copy the PH98IMG.zip to the root (not in any folders) of the external SD card. NOT the HTC Storage. This is extremely important. It should not be in ANY folders.
5) Disconnect the phone from the computer and shut the phone down.
6) Pull your phone's battery. It should not have the USB cable in it either.
7) Put the battery back in. Press and hold the volume down button and then press the power button. You should get taken to a white screen. This is HBOOT.
8) Some green text should scroll on the screen. At the bottom, it will prompt you if you would like to install the update. Press the button associated with YES. It is most likely volume up, but I cannot remember off the top of my head for sure.
9)When it finishes, it will ask you to press power to reboot. Do this. If you have no signal after booting, it is most likely because you forgot to put the battery door back on, as the antennas are in the door.
10) Delete the PH98IMG.zip from your memory card, or else you will not be able to get into recovery.
11) Custom recovery is installed.
How to access custom recovery.
1) Power down your phone and pull the battery. It should not be connected to a computer.
2) Press and hold volume down and power to get to HBOOT.
3) Use the volume buttons to scroll to recovery, then press the power button.
4) The HTC screen will flash briefly and you will be taken to recovery. You navigate with the power button and the volume buttons.
I highly recommend running a nandroid backup after this. This can be done in either recovery via the backup and restore sections. Google this if you don't know how. I figure most of you have used custom recovery before, so I won't go into it here.
Old Rooting Method(No longer works with ICS):
How to root (Permanently).
This rooting method again doesn't explicitly require a PC and is permanent until you actively remove it.
1) Flash AmonRa Recovery.
2) Boot into AmonRa Recovery.
3) Scroll to and enter the Developer menu.
4) Scroll to install Su. DO NOT INSTALL THE ENG (Unguarded) one. Use the other one.
5) Confirm this, when it is finished, go ahead and reboot. You should be rooted.

There are a couple things to consider here. First, you currently have your choice of 2 recoveries: ClockworkMod (CWM) or AmonRa. These two recoveries are very similar in function. I prefer CWM, but that is just me. We will use AmonRa in the rooting section of this post but you can ignore that for now.The installation for either of these is the same and there are 2 methods that currently work for both of them. I will only discuss one because it is the easier one for noobs. If you know how to install it via fastboot, go ahead. You probably are above this thread knowledge wise.

1) Download the PH98IMG.zip of the recovery of your choice. I have them named with the type of recovery in front of it so you know which one to download. For example, CWMPH98IMG.zip is the PH98IMG.zip of CWM recovery. Just rename it to PH98IMG.zip
2) Connect your phone to your PC (if you downloaded the PH98IMG.zip directly from your phone's browser, use a file manager to duplicate these steps)

Hmm. I had to manually flash it through Fastboot. Same with the kernel. Might want to add it just in case.

That is strange. Which recovery/Kernel?
I got to step 8, some green text started scrolling, too fast to read. at the end all i caught was "parsing PH98IMG.zip" and it ended. im still on the hboot screen, it didnt ask me to restart or anything? I have HTC STORAGE (L and Removable Disk (M. I put the PH98IMG.zip in M which I'm assuming is my SDcard. I dont know what I did wrong.
Stupid ?. I though you need to have root before you could flash a recovery?
which recovery did you attempt to install?

AmonRaPH98IMG.zip. Just removed the "AmonRa" like you said.
try the CWM zip. I think I have an idea of what the issue is. If it wants you to install the CWM zip, there is a problem with the Amonra zip file

boot.img should work too. I think the zips don't work due to a difference in the android-info.txt. If bal1985 can install CWM then that is the issue. People have been able to install ziggy's kernel via the boot image I packed with a PH zip
Looks like we were having roughly the same thought at about the same time because your post didn't exist when I started mine
At least nobody should have problems getting up and running now between both our guides.

In my post right above yours I attached a new one. Try flashing that over CWM. It should work.

i just followed steps 1-11 and it worked, said something about "fat erased" lol and it asked me to restart. should i be able to get into recovery now and root? just continue your steps?

Unable to create back up using CWM

CWM Version 5.8.1.4, Stock rom, rooted.
Just wanted to create a back up before I flash any custom roms, I haven't been able to create a system back up. I've tried backing up to external SD card, and internal SD card but neither works.
Internal SD card will go all the way through the steps: Boot image, recovery image, system, data, and then it just hangs on the SU command at the very end of the data back up.
External SD card hangs on system back up with no commands.
Is there any fix around this? Would AmonRA be a better recovery manager to use? I used CWM because it's what I used on my Droid 2.
Also, once I create a recovery image, is there a way to manage and delete images through CWM? I know RomManager had a way, but there were issues with ROM manager on HTC phones so I stayed away from it.
edit: sorry I tried to link to other forum posts but I can't post links. there was a post I wanted to link to saying AmonRA is better, but it didn't go into detail as to why. Can I uninstall CWM and reinstall AmonRA without any problems?

Yes. Do it! That is, switch to AmonRA. One of the big problems with CWM is that it won't charge a dead battery if you happen to run it all the way down to zip.
I know AmonRA is in the roll-up sticky among other places.:highfive:

Ha! I've done everything through flashable files and only used adb and fastboot via hansoon's all in one tool when I rooted and later when I s-offed. Tonight was the first time I sat down and actually 'practiced' doing things with fastboot and adb....and I tried to do what I bet you just did...flash it using ADB?

In bootloader, you use fastboot commands. So it would be
Code:
fastboot devices
Then, assuming it sees your device
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
recovery.img is the recovery file, of course.
