Korean Custom Roms - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a GS3 from KT. I was just wanting to know if I rooted the phone could I use an international rom on the phone? I don't want to brick this thing because I just got it.

No. You will brick your device doing that. Your version is not the same as international version.

Damn. Oh well. I hate touchwiz UI and i just wanted some jelly bean action. I'm coming from a galaxy nexus

Flashing a i9300 rom, root, recovery, ect will result in your phone bricking. Read this if you dont want to brick your phone

I actually read all of that before I posted. I was trying to get into rom porting so that I can get the good stuff. All they have is rooted stock korean versions on the site. On top of that it still won't root using odin for some reason. I am not a newb. I shouldve got the international version.

[Q] How do I root and install cwm with the ICS update?

So...I returned my phone to stock, which was a nightmare because I already had a devs ICS and the instructions (for returning to stock) are for UCKH7...got endless errors and whatnot...
Finally figure it out. So now I'm back to 2.3.6 and I figured I connect to Kies and get the At&t ICS version. No problem...got it!
Now...if I want to root it and instal cwm, how would I do it? I mean the methods at the dev section are for the gingerbread os, right?
Any help will be appreciated. :good:
just flash a kernel with Odin. Far as I know it should work fine. Then again I haven't had to do it for a long while.

This is MUCH safer read this thread.....

EDIT: After a little more thought if I were you I wouldn't do anything else to your phone since you already flashed the kernel with the 99% confirmed eMMC "superbrick" bug (see the first link) until you research the best way, least possible chance to bricking your phone... Maybe Entropy512 can help with the best way to flash a new package!! GL if anything ever did happen I sure hope Samsung would give you a replacement.....
Another question (might be related)
Hey all,
I have just got a brand new i777, I just wanted to upgrade it to ICS and sim-unlock it.
The upgrade is to be done through kies, no problem in that.
The sim-unlocking is the issue .. i know it was easy in gingerbread to root and use herlroz app .. but now is there an easy way without using ODIN or flashing a kernel to sim-unlock this phone on the official ICS ?

downgrading to 2.3 to be able to root and go to ICS?

Hello,
Have done some searches and I just wanted to see if this is right as my Note was rooted with Gingerbread 2.3 and I stupidly upgraded with Kies to the official AT&T ICS software and lost my root. I have just a few questions.
Would the only way to get a rooted stock ICS rom on the phone (such as those available in the forum) be to downgrade to Gingerbread and root (which I have done before) then install one of the custom "stock" roms to have ICS but have root access? Or am I completely out of luck on rooting a stock ICS Note?
If so, could someone direct me to the thread with downgrading to gingerbread, as a search has not helped me to find instructions for doing so, and with all of the information on this site, I believe it has to be there and that I a just missing it?
Feel free to delete my post if I am completely lost and have posted erroneously in the wrong forum or anything to that effect.

Root with odin like you would on gb but on ICS. Just try the cm9 roms though, it will change your life
You do not need to downgrade to GB to root. What you need to do is boot the phone into download mode, and use Odin to flash a custom recovery (such as CWM). Once you have the custom recovery flashed, you can boot into recovery mode and flash the Superuser or Supersu zip file to give you root. Using this method is the most foolproof way.

Will rooting and those custom firmwares that was made for i9300 work?
Also, the phone came with a lot of random unneeded apps, how do i put on a fresh un modified FW from Samsung on my korean version?
Also, S Voice is in korean even when i set the language to English, how do i change it to english?
Thanks

Not sure about rooting and fw, for s-voice you have to enter the S-voice settings to change the language. Just hit menu when in Svoice.. you'll have to guess since it's in another language which to pick. lol.
Is that model you got the one with the quad and 2gb of ram? Are you using it in CA? if so what carrier and does it work fully? and last question.. where did you get it and how much? lol
The "SHW-M440S" is a Exynos 4 quad with 1gig of ram as far as I can tell.
I wouldnt flash anything meant for the i9300 (International version), take a look in this thread for more info on this device and other stuff
Well it's identical in terms of hardware to the i9300.
I want to get rid of all the things that this korean telecom company had preinstalled on the phone and have a clean phone.
Have anyone tried using any i9300 mods with the korean 3g S3

You get whatever firmware is for your phone as provided by the phone vendor . You do not get a base Android .

In the thread somebody linked above there are instructions on rooting the phone, there also is pre-rooted stock Rom and one custom Rom called prestige. Your best bet is to get rooted and use titanium to remove all the bloat ware. The few international Roms and mods I have tried have not worked but let me know if find one that does!

The phone supports AWS but not in this "state" of fw.

Head over to the Korean phone page here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749214), root your phone, use titanium to freeze or uninstall all those unwanted apps!
On another note found this on Korean dev site. Seems this guy is running the Siyah kernel with CM10 on his M440s
Edit: He posted his Siyah kernel and via translation seems you could use CM9/10 with it. Gonna get the mrs to make sure google translate is correct before trying. You can easily sign up at that site to access the files.

So, how do I proceed to debrand (remove sk telecom rom and get a stock debranded rom?
Ive only seen i9300 ones. Can I use i9300 stock rom on shw m440s as I use this phone in canada
As of right now you have two options that i know of. 1) root the phone and manually remove bloatware. 2) use a custom Rom (cm9/10/etc) with a custom kernel.
If you can't read Korean, can't figure out how to access sites for custom kernels PM me with email address and I'll email you the modified cm9/cm10/franco kernels I have found for our phone then you can test out which works best for you.

Hello I'm a Korean user
for custom ROMs, you have to flash a 'kernel converter' of a custom kernel for the shw-m440s after flashing the ROM for the firmware to work. sometimes, touchwiz based ROMs have problems with communication and photography but aosp based ROMs and CM based ROMs have worked perfectly so far. recovery you can flash the same one with the i9300 and have no problem. For rooting you have to have a visit to this thread
So I have a S3 and I am totally not sure if its the original I9300 or SHW M440S... I have flashed stock I9300 4.3 firmware and the result was a laggy firmware and my phone kept rebooting. I wasnt the first to own this phone, my uncle did and he said he just flashed the old i9300 4.3 firmware and the problem has occured which is a broken camera (cant connect to camera), not working speakers and headphone jack and mic...
Normally I would just get it fixed but.. Because of the broken cam, speakers and mic, my youtube or any online streaming videos does not load and mp3 musics dont play as the player apps force close when i press play...
Again, a broken hardware does not affect the software so I am not sure if it is really the hardware or I just flashed the wrong firmware on the wrong phone.
Has anyone ever tried to flash a I9300 4.3 official firmware on a S3 SHW M440S?
Did you get the same result as I did?
Do you recommend me to flash a SHW M440S firmware on my s3 just to check? Will it not brick my phone?
Please help me out..
Thanks and God Bless
You can't flash i9300 rom on a M440S without it being converted, or installing a kernel made for the m440s afterwards or using a kernel converter after the rom.

So hello there sgs3 community!
I just received my sgs3 yesterday and wanted to know what should i do first with it?
I mean root and etc, could anyone help me with that?
It depends, are you happy with stock firmware?? Only you can decide buddy, its your phone. I rooted mine because their are a lot of good ROMs out their, each with different assets etc, but mainly because I didn't want to be limited on what I can do with my device, but if you want my opinion, I'd root and flash Tamaseks kang of CM10 naked android is always the best p.s make sure you have the international S3 (quad core) before you flash anything in this section because inevitably you will brick your device if you dont. Good luck buddy

Triangle away isn't a recovery, its just an app that erases the flash counter in case you want to send your device to Samsung for repairs because you should know, unauthorized mods void your warranty. CF-Root has a recovery and will be installed upon flashing with Odin

The only way of switching to and from custom and stock, is to root, make a nandroid backup then flash custom firmware. The only downside is that your official firmware will always be rooted, unless you start afresh with Odin hope this helps buddy, welcome btw, good choice in switching from iPhone to S3....you won't regret it

Still no jelly bean for me? :(

I have unbranded galaxy s3 i9300...
Still running android 4.0.4
baseband version: I9300XXLF
Any idea why there is no OTA jelly bean for me yet?
Also, any idea if it should be even available for me ?
Updates are dependent on many factors, including where you live.
Ask Samsung directly
Or root and take control.
Good luck
When it comes to rooting - I'm a total rookie..
Where I can ask samsung about it ?
It's not difficult to root s3
Take an hour, a pc
Search s3 thread for root kit, it's all explained and semi automatic there
Odin is included in above and will be used to root in seconds.
Make sure you understand what you will be doing, follow steps properly. An hour should be enough to read and do rooting
If you need to ask Samsung, go to their website, check contact us section for your country.

press thanks if I helped you
relatively, you can go to sammobile.com and download the latest official jb firmware..
but take not that the updates also depend on the region are currently in.. so if let's say you download the Polish JB firmware, and you are not from Poland... then you won't have to get OTA updates.. you have to update your phone manually
Cheers!
You don't have to root to flash the latest software version...
