Activating first run setup - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am buying an android tablet for my friend for their birthday. I would like to be able to root it and install some apps for them so it is ready to go, and then afterwords set it so it will show the first run setup dialoge, so when they get it they can set up their account and settings. Question is how do I trigger that when I am done?

If you're planning to toss on a custom ROM then I believe you would just need to flash Gapps after the flash, ie, flash the ROM, do what you want, then flash Gapps and the power off. I would reccomend testing on another device first though, I am not totally sure that the one time initiation will come on or not.

You have to do a factory reset in order to do so...you won't lose root though..but the apps installed in the phone's memory will be gone too...you will have yo use a google account in order to download through play store, except if you use apks......if you areusing apks, then there's no need to add a google account before presenting it to your friend...play store will prompt him to add one on the first launch...

[Q] Will be buying HDX 7" soon, have some questions

Is there currently a way to have both the Amazon App store and the Google Play store working together? On the newest update?
Does rooting have any adverse affects from Amazon? Like will anything stop working?
I plan on buying a used tablet, how can I check to make sure the tablet is deactivated so that I can use my own Amazon stuff on it and it doesn't get marked as stolen?
I may think of other questions I need help with in the meantime, but thanks for any help.
everwhere

Check out the general section, you will find the anwser you seek. if you have any other questions there is also a search abilility..there are only about a half a dozen threads titled with the same or basically the same as yours...thanks for visiting and I hope you find all the information you need. Previous owner must unregister. the tablet from their account before u received it.and I would attempt to register it and setup your account before cash exchanges hands or contact amazon with id to verify that it has not been blackliisted already, it can either be unregistered by owner from tab then reset . Or done through ther online account..
A lot of the threads I have read seem to have people contradicting or trying to figure out what actually works or not, or is simply outdated.
Yeah, I'm with OP. I have a new Fire HDX and am trying to figure out the 'best' way to root it, and after reading through everything I'm more confused than before.
I haven't taken my Fire out of the box yet. There seems to be discussion that if I haven't downloaded an OTA yet, I can root in a way others can't because the new updates block it?
Is there a known "best" ROM someone can point us to?
Why do I keep seeing everyone say 'don't ever turn on wifi!'? I assume that is just to not get the OTA update at the beginning. But once rooted, obv we can use wifi right?
Is every root method dependant on creating a separate partition for the new ROM, and whenever we use the Kindle we have to choose to use the stock amazon rom or the new ROM we've flashed?
Thanks!
well

Well "root"has nothing to do with seperate partitions n such. root is all permission control over system.
The only way to flash anything currently is being on older os rooting, then installing safestrap which will set up alternate system and data boot path allowing you to flash a ROM separately from your factory os ,as to not disturb it. Because currently we do not have stable working fastboot for this device. As for BEST rom. In any situation is totally in one own experience and opinions. Currently there isn't any selection if u look in development section the only two that function only work on old firmware ...you can roll back to that firmware ..but also bootloader is locked tight thus the need for a "safe" type of recovery as of moment only works on older firmware also. Just.within the last couple of days have reveiled a couple of rooting options for lastest firmware so ...this tab per Amazon gives no warning nor asks permission to upgrade of firmware which unrooted a ton of people last few months...soooo no root no development....now we have root again we will get going again..Have fun and most of all be PATIENT and do not ask for ETA remember all the developers here are doing that on there FreeTime and free of pay most the time. AS FAR as rooting and adding gapps to newest firmware I heard that it has been achieved with HDXPOSED found in development and permission module . Then sideload gapps... As far as adverse effects... Like I said you will have to be patient if you want somebody else to find out bugs for you.. still to new .....due to new root releases..like last three days.
I'm perfectly fine with the stock rom honestly, as long as I can get Google Play store working alongside the Amazon app store. Now, assuming I can root when I receive the tablet, I will install safestrap. Is there any bugs or anything with safestrap but just using the stock rom? I saw some people mention getting permission errors and such but I think that was just for custom roms in another slot. I only want safestrap to make a backup.
Basically, is there any actual danger to modifying the stock rom at all, even something simply like play store? Or should it all be done on a custom rom slot? I would assume having the backup would mean if something got messed up I can just restore it.
Secondly, there is a SEPARATE play store mod you can do where they don't both work together right? I believe I saw something about it where you just have to install a custom launcher, and with the custom launcher the google play apps work but under the amazon launcher, amazon stuff works? If that's correct, does that work without root? Because I can live with that temporarily until root is secured.
Thanks.
nope

As far as I know gapps aside from gmail will not work without root and HDXposed..(fixes permissions)and as far as doing any mods to stock slot it is not advised because of very difficult if even possible recovery due to no fastboot capabilities. Check for bugs for any mods in associated threads. As far as flashing anything ,again I am not sure safestrap is functioning on latest firmware .. And there hasn't been enough time for any development because of the recent rooting capabilities.
Alright, so it sounds like this is what I should do then:
Get tablet
Root it (If I can't, then I stop here)
Install safestrap
Backup
Install the backup on romslot 1??
Make the modifications I want to romslot 1
Is that right?
Also let's assume I can't root it, I can still sideload most apps I want like Gmail, Youtube, etc? (Those aren't on the amazon app store correct?)
yeap

Yeah I would say you just about got the idea .... If it is a brand-new unit you have a possibility that it will be on the old firmware still ... That is why they need to bypass activation skip set up . And check firmware before you hook it to any active Wi-Fi service .. And even if it does or is already updated there is now root available for the latest firmware ... It's just a question whether or not we can get anything else to work along with the latest firmware ... I would be advised if you attempt to run the OTA blocker which comes in the HDX utility you may have Wi-Fi glitches and reboots .... But like I said those bugs need to be checked for and follow through and repaired in their associated threads ... Not a new thread that only plugs up our forums but puts the helpful threads on the next page where cannot find them ... Remember there are multiple pages each forum section and some of the helpful threads have been buried on the next page due to people starting new threads with the same questions or problem... That have been resolved already... Remember reading is more informative than typing . And remember if anybody here is giving you their personal time to answer your questions and respond to your post it is courtesy here to hit the thanks button in the left lower corner of the post.End rant. thx

Re-rooting?

I have a Note 2 (obviously), and I have rooted my phone the first day I got it and have never updated the phone since I purchased it. So, I am still on 4.1.2. My phone has been super laggy and I want to take the oppurtunity the when I reset my phone that I can take advatages of the new features that mobile phones have by upgrading all the way to 5.1.x.
So, I downloaded CM 12.1 by wilson3q with 5.1 system. I first tried the 5.0 version since the 5.1 looked too new, and did not have time to deal with the bugs. When I flashed the 5.0 version, I got errors of not being able to flash gapps for 5.0 and that I lost my root. I tried downloading the new TWRP to see if I can get a newer version that would work better, but no luck. I got an error saying that I lost my root privileges and did I want TWRP to fix it. I slid yes to fix, but no luck.
The same problem occurred when I tried with 5.1.
So, I ended up restoring my nandroid backup and I am back on 4.1.2 again with root working again.
I am thinking that I am probably supposed to 'step up' the updates, but not sure. Does anyone have a solution or a link to the solution that they can help with?
PS: I did not like the camera that came with the new mod. I do like the stock one. Are there flashes of cameras that I can use as well when I do end up upgrading?
Thank you in advance!!!

Try Phiz recovery, I've never had trouble with "[I605][CWM Advanced Edition] PhilZ Touch". If I recall we had to start using that one when kit-kat was released (i reserve the right to recall poorly)
I have a link to download mirror here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60899023&postcount=146
from your new recovery, you should be able to install CM12.1 and 5.1 gaaps recommended in the Wilson3Q i605 thread. from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-2-verizon/development/rom-unofficial-build-i605-t3069506
FWIW, I am on the 20150803 build and still using the GApps Minimal Edition 2015-04-04 for Android 5.1 (91 MB) from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/gapps-google-apps-minimal-edition-t2943330
with no issues to report.
You may also need to track down updated radios (to flash from CWM). I think you can find a link to the updated ND7 Modem/Baseband here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2765021
somewhere in middle of first post
Good Luck!
PS you may want to flash superSU from recovery... get the zip from chainfire's xda thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
(I've been dirty flashing for so long I dont' remember if the rom came with SuperSU or superuser... as such I can't recall if I had to flash this zip or not, but I probably did if I had issues with root)
Note you may also need to enable root from the settings menu after enabling developer mode.
there should be a "root access" option (or somehting like that there)
PPS are you also remembering to wipe data & clear cache/dalvik?
I have found zoot's mega wipe useful...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1983489
it is for the N7100/N7105, butI have used it on the i605 quite a bit. Initial test result reported here:

that said zoot's script is probably overkill

I assume that you are giving steps in order, BUT I feel that I should flash the radio to 4.4.2 first, in which the link was broken. I have spent a couple hours trying to find another link, but I am afraid that I may be using an incorrect one. Do you have a good link for that, please?
Also, I have ready the newest Samsung 3.10 Odin downloaded and installed, as well as the USB driver installed and downloaded the ADB fastboot. If I remember correctly, I am supposed to move this onto C: and run it to access the device (Note 2). It has been since Android first came out since I have used the ADB though. So, I apologize for the ignorance. So, do I just make sure the adb is in the same directory and run Odin or did I not need ADB and just run Odin?
I also assume that I run the Philz touch after I have gotten to 4.4.2 rooted first. Am I correct by assuming that?

Yes, I have done a cache/dalvik wipe a few times (because I have tried reflashing to get it to work with no luck).
I have downloaded the .zip version of superSU as well, and gapps minimal 5.1 with wilson3q's 5.1 ROM. So, I am almost ready to go with the exception of the correct radio upgrade file.
Thank you so much for your help!!! Much appreciated!
PS Will my old WifiTether apk files still work with 5.1 or do I need to get a new one?
Thanks Again!

(Good read)
Just flash philz from twrp. Reboot recovery wipe/reset... then flash new ROM gaaps... Wipe/reset... Then reboot.
I can post the radio zip to my site later tonight. I believe you can flash that last, or later (from philz cwm, after getting on cm12.1)
Same as superSU. Check out ROM first. It comes with root that can be enabled in developer options. you can always reboot to recovery later and flash the zip.
PS. WiFi tether built into ROM "hotspot" (no VZW subscription required)
Pps try this for the nd7 radios

Sorry to bother you, but I still am getting errors with Failed root access for Titanium Backup Pro. I also cannot find Developer Options in the settings menu.
I have tried flashing the radio before and after wiping and installing the ROM then gapps then superSU. I get into superSU and it asks me for root access and I grant it, but Titanium Backup Pro still says that it has no root access.
Any ideas? Thank YOU!!

with SuperSU installed, you may need to just need to update binaries. open SuperSU and it should prompt you if necessary. the "normal" option should work (no need to flash from recovery)
for TiBu...
--within SuperSU settings you may need to disable (uncheck) "mount name separation".
--You may also have to enable unknown sources (under settings, security).
-- there might be something to enable for USB debugging as well (TIBU should prompt for it)
FWIW, you can restore user apps/data... but I would not attempt to restore any system data. Personally, I have found it best to get to know a fresh ROM for a while before trying to restore crap from an older ROM . there might be value in re-configuring apps manually and/or restoring them one at a time (after making sure the ROM is working properly) i.e. you won't need any of those aforementioned WiFi tether apps since it is built into the ROM now.
Instructions on enabling developer options in CM ROM, from here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Doc:_developer_options
1- In the Settings app, select About Phone (or About Tablet).
2- Scroll down, and tap the Build number entry seven times. On the seventh tap, you will be notified that "You are now a developer."
3- Return back to the main Settings menu. Developer options and Performance entries should now be visible.

(that is likely how to enable superuser that is "baked" into the rom, given you already installed SuperSU it may only complicate matters)
You may be rooted and just having TiBu issues. If all else fails you can check with an app. A long time ago, I've used "Simple Root Checker" by SimoneDev to check root/busybox. It is still in the play store.
Good Luck!

Thank you! It ended up being my version of Titanium Backup. I downloaded a new version and it is good. As far as restoring is concerned, I do not even want the apps themselves restored from there, because there may be a new version and would like a fresh install of those apps. I just want my data restored. For example, I have a surveillance software that I would just like to restore the entries (IP's usernames and passwords). I would like my email settings to be there, so that I do not have to re setup my 7 email addresses. My Text/SMS messages and my alarms. So, I am not trying to do a full restore.
On another note, I am trying to get my calendars back into my phone with no luck. I cannot install google calendar and get my google calendars to populate into my task widget, and the ROM is not letting me set up my POP email addresses. Also, I see no ringtones, so I have no ringers to ring my phone nor tones for my alarm clock. I flashed gapps for 5.1 and I see nothing extra from the ROM. I thought gapps was google apps. Am I trying to do stuff differently than you? There seems to be a few problems in that manner that I am trying to work with.
I am thinking of downgrading to 5.0. Maybe the 5.1 is too new?
Again, THANK YOU for your help!

I wouldn't downgrade, nobody is actively working on 5.0.2 anymore.... that thread is basically dead. Also, it is likely less "stable"/mature than what you have installed now (that is currently being maintained). i.e. you have the ROM that I would stick with.
like I said I wouldn't restore any thing into system (apps or data)... you can do whatever you please. (but it could be causing you more issues than just biting the bullet & configuring manually) i.e. restoring accounts might result in unanticipated issues, you came from a much older version of android.
all I had to do was install google calendar from play store and then the CM12 calendar stuff all worked (I might have had to restart and/or install the google calendar prior to setting up primary gmail). you might need to remove all your accounts and load them again (a factory reset might be faster though.)
also you might have to update google services and the play store before certain things "play nice".
I know you don't want to hear this but...
from here on out i'll likely point to all your issues being based on restoring system data. (based on my limited knowledge and personal experience). FWIW, I'd try to reconfigure/setup everything manually and you will likely have much better results.

I figured that, and feared that and the same time. So, what am I flashing onto the phone with gapps then? Also, one of the reasons I was wanting to go back was because there are a few apps that are not 'compatible' with this system. Meanwhile, I am going to wipe and reset again, and do what you suggested and just reconfigure.
Thanks again!

GAaps are the google apps... good read:
http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/Google_Apps
(hopefully I am not out of line for posting a link to that wiki)
many ROMS like CM don't' include gaaps due to licencing/legal issues. which is why the AOSP roms devs often have you flash the GAAPS package separately (also you can pick your package for your fact pattern... full gaaps/minimal gaaps/etc.).
Also the gaaps zip files you flash from recovery install the files into system. a lot of folks like the minimal editions of GAaps because it doesn't force all the apps into system. instead it just gets you up and running with the play store and a few essentials... that lets the user install all the other google apps as user apps, from the play store.
basically taking the "debloat" mentality as far as you can... keep stuff out of system and let the user decide what to install.

[GUIDE] install OpenGapps on Stock ROM (Chinese version, VIE-AL10C)

I have recently acquired a P9 Plus (Chinese Version) and one of the issues with all of the Android phones sold in China is that they don't have Google services (Google in banned in China because of its refusal to comply with the Chinese internet regulations). There are ways you can install bits and pieces from the Huawei app store but it would be difficult to get all of the Google services together. There are ways already posted on XDA where you can install contact sync and app store one by one, but to me downloading through apkmirror (or any other site) could be a risk since those are uploaded by anonymous users and unless you can decompile the code and try to understand what's in those, it would be difficult to know if the apk is or is not doing something that are not designed for.
This guide assumes that you have unlocked bootloader and installed TWRP on it. Also I am not sure if you need to root the phone (which is pretty much for free once you had TWRP installed) but I had my phone rooted by the time I installed OpenGapps, obviously during this process you would have got the ADB drivers installed.
This process will wipe all user data, so please make sure you do a backup on your phone first.
First step is to download the installer zip to PC (or to SD card, I didn't have a spare SD card so I just download directly to PC), go to http://opengapps.org/, choose ARM64 (I know it is not actually ARM processor but somehow this package works, may be ARM and Kirin have compatible instruction set? That will sure make custom ROM development a lot easier!), 6.0 for OS version and choose the package you would like to have. I used nano but I am sure for other packages would work too.
Now go to TWRP on your phone. If you have downloaded the installer on your SD card you can just do Install -> select the zip and flash. I downloaded to my PC so I have to use the Sideload route, basically go to Advanced -> ADB sideload and simply do adb sideload FILE_NAME.zip (replace FILE_NAME with the actual OpenGapps package name you have downloaded). After that I originally tried to wipe caches and simply reboot but that didn't work for me.
So here is the trick, you will need to wipe Data and Internal Storage as well. I know, this sounds crazy but this is how it worked for me. If you managed to get other combinations to work feel free to suggest here as well.
What I did was I went to Wipe -> Advanced Wipe wiped Cache/Dalvik Cache, Internal Storage and Data (i.e., check everything except System and Micro SDCard) and then did a wipe.
After that, Reboot -> System.
Now once you are done with the set up, you will be greeted with an "uglier" version of the original UI (no fancy gold color!), but guess what, you should be able to see Google Play Store and you should be able to add Google accounts in Settings -> accounts.
For some reason I noticed if you try to add Google accounts you seem to be able to add one only (may be I overlooked something) so what I did was I went to the GMail app then go to Settings -> Add Account and that allows me to add the other Google accounts. Once you add a Google account on the GMail app it should be visible in other Google apps (App Store/Movies/Games, for instance) as well.
Any questions/better ideas feel free to post them below.

If you have read my post above, KangVIP has stuff that can not be removed (not easily at least), the official 198 has none of that.
If you want to post about the KangVIP ROM at least have the decency to start your own thread.
Beyond that, I don't really understand what you are trying to say.

I don't think locking does (at least with my experience in using the dload method), however if you want to unlock again later on it will wipe the phone. I'd recommend you to backup the phone before performing any of these actions though.

why is the dload not working in some instances? like on AL10, I cannot perform the dload update method, i have the latest update of emui 5.0 thats why i wanna re-lock then downgrade using hi-suit, then flash twrp and flash the updated version. it sucks,
but maybe you can help me on how to do the dload update.

Malware filled phone?

Hey guys, how are y'all doing?
Here's a little background on my problem:
A year ago bought a cheap-ass smartphone for my mom, from a big supermarket chain in my country that was selling french phones cheaply, it was only 60€ and my mom needed a phone, so there it is!
Anyway cut to the present, the phone is riddled of what I suspect is malware that installs itself as soon as I remove it such as Free Games, com.google.toolkit, MiniChrome, N62Androidpt, System Component, adservice, and a couple others.
It also keeps switching wi-fi off, and turning on that option that allows apps to be installed from unknown sources, and worst of all it keeps opening the phone in built browser with adds, and even porn sites on occasion, which is really not desirable as my very young aged nieces love stealing the phone and try to use it.
I installed malwarebytes, also did a factory reset to no avail it fixed nothing.
So I decided to flash a stock rom to see if I could get rid of it, searched around and found a repository of stock roms or firmwares or whatever it's called (I'm not too familiar with this side of smartphones), which I'd love to post, but apparently can't because I've last than 10 posts: doc-doapi.com/EM/selecline/smartphone/
It has a lot of roms for different models of my brand.
Used the UpgradeDownload - R2.9.2015 tool that was in that folder and flashed it successfully.
After I turned on the device it opened the new phone setup process, logged in to my google account, and restores my stuff like contacts, and a few trusted google apps from before the flash, but it soon started again to install those malware apps I stated up there on it's own, and it was soon in the same state as before...
Anyway here's some info about my phone that probably should've gone to the top.
It's a Selecline phone
Model S4S5in3g
Android version: 5.1
Kernel version: 3.10.65
Compilation number: S3S5in3g.V1.2_20160307
At the back it has a sticker and another model number 870712 which I used to find the folder on that repository of stock roms.
And that's all in a big nutshell, anyone has any tips?
Thanks.
lil' bump
Do you have login credentials for this Auchan website where you found the ROMs? It is asking for a login ID and password. I need ROM for Model S6S5IN3G.
Quick tip for getting rid of Malware even before they start. Go to Settings and check Data Usage. See which apps are using lots of data (downloading junk into your device). Note if there are any strange sounding apps that are downloading a lot of data, especially if it is not an app that you yourself were directly using.
Next, flash the stock ROM again. Once you flash the new ROM, you have to find a way to root the device. Try KingRoot. Then after the phone is rooted, go to Playstore and download SD Maid. Run SD Maid and give it root access. In the settings for AppControl of SD Maid, allow it to show system apps. Then run app control and freeze any strange-looking user apps (or anyone that was downloading a lot of data) and system app that are not required.
Please, let me know about the website and how to access the ROMs.
As mentioned before, install a clean room again. Copy virustotal app from the attachment of these post (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77053739&postcount=11) to SD-card and install it. Turn wifi on and let it run. Control every app and the system-apps. Post a screenshot of the findings. If there are findings, then the room is infected. The only way to deal with this, is to root it, install rootexplorer an kill the infected app. This can be dangerous, if for example, the lauchner is infected, an alternative launcher must first be installed and set as default, before you can kill the infected one (otherwise you will own a useless phone until you flash it again ;o).
Hey guys, thanks for trying to help.
I tried literally everything before, I've even somehow got a kitchen up and running and I removed everything that looked suspicious and all those bran add-ons from the rom, but even then I'd still get infected.
I didn't really try the antivirus route though and to be honest I already shelved that phone, but I'm kinda bored, so I'll try y'all suggestions, an extra working phone can always come in handy.

Changing roms and banking app

Before using my banking app the bank requires that I come in and they activate the app at the bank so whenever I install a new custom rom the app requires me to go back to the bank to activate. How would I install a new rom without having to go to the bank every time?
Not the smoothest way but, what I did was to create a NAND backup (with the bank app working). Then when using a new/different ROM and needing to use the app, restore that backup. Of course the complete process takes a while, but worked for me. At least for a while, maybe they updated their app and they detected the change so now it's blocked so I have to call the bank to unlock it.
Maybe dual boot would work better?
Found the solution on Android 9.0. Find what the app ID is for the banking app on the rom it's working on, save it somewhere for future use. On the new rom, use https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/app-device-id-changer-oreo-13-aprv0-9-2-t3777299 to change the app's ID back to its original one and reboot your phone.
Cool will try that next time i flash
