Droid Incredible 4G LTE FAQs - Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE

I've noticed a lot of similar questions around these forums, so I decided to collect some in the same place. This is by no means an exhaustive list.
I can haz root/S-OFF?
There are options for unlocking your bootloader by changing your SuperCID, also there are options for obtaining S-OFF.
Thanks to Team Fireballas for the root method, and thanks to unlimited.io for S-OFF.
Now, please, don't talk like that anymore. Proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation help us understand the question or point you're trying to get across.
My FriendStream (or another HTC) app is missing
HTC decided to remove the FriendStream widget from view in an attempt to de-bloat Sense. On the stock ROM, you can still access it via the lockscreen and somewhat through the Social Clock.
Lockscreen: Settings -> Personalize -> Lock Screen Style -> Friend Stream
Social Clock: Widgets -> Clock -> Social Clock
On the stock ROM, there are several HTC apps missing from our phone, including the beloved flashlight. However, not all the apps are truly missing, just hidden. If you have root, you can re-enable it in the default.xml file located in the /system/customize/MNS/ folder. Remove the listing for FriendStream or whatever app you want to view in the app drawer from the "application_hide" function. FriendStream might also require the listing under "shortcut_hide" to be removed, as well. If you are rooted, a custom ROM may not have this problem.
Why do I have this annoying Wi-Fi icon?
For whatever reason, HTC or Verizon decided to add an annoying Wi-Fi nag icon in the notification bar telling you that you should turn on Wi-Fi. Why Verizon wouldn't want you to go over your data limit and owe them more money is beyond me. If you have root, there is a pretty simple fix for this, or try a custom ROM.
Can I use 64GB MicroSD cards?:
Our phone lists 32GB as the largest capacity microSD card it is capable of utilizing. However, that is the largest capacity allowed by the SD 2.0 standard, SDHC. SD 3.0 currently allows 64GB SDXC cards to be backwards compatible with SD 2.0 ports. Since every single 64GB card isn't necessarily going to work, it's best to read around and find the specific models which do.
Why do the official specs say our phone has 8GB of internal storage but I have less?:
Due to the controversial naming scheme of hard drives and other forms of data storage, companies actually give you less storage than you anticipated. 'Giga' is an SI decimal prefix meaning 10^9, or 1 billion bytes. Before hard drive capacities were in the gigabytes, hard drives used the IEC binary capacity for megabytes (2^20), albeit with the SI prefix. RAM is still calculated with the IEC value but with the SI prefix. So, when your internal storage is calculated to be 8GB, it's actually 8 x 10^9 rather than 8 x 2^30. Since Microsoft has been around since the other standard was set, Windows still displays storage capacity in the binary fashion and labels it with the decimal format.
On top of that, the Android system takes up a sizable amount of storage space, which is included in our phone's internal storage capacity, so you're only allowed 4.15GiB of data storage, which is 4.457GB. In short, you've got 8 billion bytes, but only 4.457 billion bytes usable, which is 4.15GiB. A similar capacity change will be noticed on your MicroSD card size. For example, I have a 32GB MicroSD card, which is actually 29.7GiB. I have a 2TB hard drive, but I only have 1.818TiB available. That's almost 200GiB "missing" because of the naming scheme.
What's the deal with the SD card naming scheme?:
Android 4.0 introduced a new way that SD cards are handled by the system. Previously, the eMMC internal storage of the phone was in the '/emmc/' folder, and the SD card was '/sdcard/'. Makes perfect sense, right? Way to screw it up, Google. Now, the internal storage is in the '/sdcard/' folder, and the real SD card is '/sdcard2/'. There's nothing you can do about this without serious modding to the system. It was changed because Google considers our phones to be high capacity now, so the need for microSD has passed. Yes, portable storage isn't necessary. If you have root, there's a mod that can switch it for you.
Can I install apps to the SD Card?:
Unfortunately, if you are unrooted and on the stock ROM, as per the SD card naming scheme change mentioned immediately above, apps can no longer be installed to the SD card. Like I mentioned above, if you have root, there's a mod for that. Otherwise, when saved in the 'Internal storage', apps are saved in the normal location of apps, '/data/app/'. When saved in the 'Phone storage', apps are saved in the eMMC internal storage partition '/sdcard/.android_secure/' as a '.asec' file.
Can I use Google Wallet?:
If you are rooted, then there's an experimental method that may let you successfully run Google Wallet.
Is our phone capable of being used globally?:
The latest 2.17.605.2 update enabled global phone on our phone. Go to Settings -> Call, and change Preferred Network to Global.
These have been the most common questions I have seen, and I'll be updating this list with more pertinent information when it arises. There are plenty of other questions that have been answered, even more which haven't. Look around for questions, and if there isn't an answer, don't be afraid to ask.

FYI the debugfs root method doesn't look to be working... not sure if you saw that in the other thread or not.

Had to throw up a pic...64GB....the only way to go
Card is a Sandisk 64GB micro.

Hey self, nevermind. If anyone else wants to just copy over the APK that you need to modify, just do what I said here -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30679535&postcount=40. You will need root, though, and I understand a lot of people don't. All it is is removing a few images that for some reason stops the notifications as well.

lol. I appreciate you making it readily available for us, but most of us don't have root. Here's to hoping our spamming Verizon works quickly!

I added to and updated a few things on the list. Hopefully people will read it before asking the same things over and over.

IceDragon59, you've done a nice job with the FAQ, I wonder if you might also consider taking on the task of making an index post for ROMs, recoveries, unlock methods, scripts, themes, etc?
Oh, and it looks like you can remove the please sticky notice from the title.

That's not a bad idea. I'll make it my weekend project. And thanks for pointing out the fact that this thread finally got stickied after 5 months.

FYI, the direct link in the OP to the post with the .apk for killing the wifi nag is outdated. It takes you to post #40 in that thread, but that .apk may actually botch things up for folks running the latest stock Sense. There is a post a few posts later with an updated .apk to match the more recent Sense.

What is the advantage of cooking a ROM in a kitchen?

I did a bunch of searching but didn't come up with a clear answer (probably due to just how much info is out there on cooking).
Why do people cook ROM's in kitchens? What is the advantage of it, vs taking a clean rom, and installing the .cab's for the various programs / options you want, using a program like Sashimi or even manually?
It seems like if it's cooked into the ROM, a program can't be removed or upgraded. Is there a storage size benefit or some other benefit? Thanks in advance.
Well some people like to REMOVE stuff that they don't use. DCD includes a lot of stuff by default that I personally remove when I use the kitchen. Likewise, he doesn't include some of the stuff I like to install that isn't (officially) in CAB form.
A good example of this is that I remove all Voice-related stuff and add the Entertainment pack to my Kitchen ROMs, as well as some generic stuff like TomTom7.
As far as auto-installing using Sashimi or Autorun/etc, I can't really answer anything related to those, but integrating into an OEM eliminates the need to install via CAB (it's basically installed when u flash).
I hope that helps some. If not, ask away.
One benefit I see is if you have some form of a tracking tool, if someone steals your phone and does a hard reset, if you have it cooked in the rom via kitchen, then it restarts back up and will be able to help you recover your phone.
For tools that don't update on a regular schedule, there is the benefit of not having to reload it from a cab. In my case I have it auto-configure my exchange settings, owner info, load a few games that I don't have a cab for, and to change a few of the programs that DCD provides that I don't use.
I can hard reset my phone in the field and within 30 seconds my data is already being synced back to my phone with only a few clicks.

The hard-reset idea was what I used to claim, but not anymore. I flash a new ROM on this phone like every 2 weeks. (addiction?) Having most of my apps cooked on after flashing is the biggest benefit for me now. Since I've got all my apps in OEM form (some already made, some I created on my own), I just simply use them in whatever kitchen. So now, no matter what ROM I flash to, it's still the "same" for me
i do it mainly for convenience, its a lot easier for me to configure all my email, owner info, reg tweaks, and other stuff on my PC before flashing than on the phone after flashing
Great question!

If I can do that, then it would seem to make sense to put up as stripped a ROM as possible and load all my normal programs on the storage card.

So do you put all your data files (Excel workbooks, Word docs, databases, etc.) on your card? With 8 to 16 GB cards, there's little worry about running out of storage now.
I've installed nearly all of my (non-MS) apps on the card currently; loading doesn't seem to be a problem except for Skyfire. Next ROM image I assemble I will minimize everything in ROM and use your "CAB on Card" idea.
Thanks for the comment. cv
For quite some time, I used the kitchen on my Apache & then some with my Mogul.
For the Apache, the biggest benefit was saving memory by getting rid of all the crap Sprint loads on the phone. For the Mogul, memory isn't as big an issue, anymore.
I quit using the kitchen because the results were too buggy with my Mogul. I need my phone to operate every single time I use it and the one in a hundred times my kitchen-ized phone wouldn't work right was one time too many.
One of the annoying things about the kitchen, imo, is that there are dozens of wonderful apps with no explanation as to what they do. I've inquired about them a few times & rarely ever gotten a clear answer. Most of them can be Googled, but many can't. It seems like a waste.
In the end, I'm using Sprint's latest official ROM with lots and lots of upgrades. I also have figured out how to delete most of the files that are installed by default using various file explorers, so I've cleared up even more memory. Now, my phone is rock solid... doesn't have a single glitch... works 100% of the time at 100% capability. I do not worry that the bluetooth will decide it's not going to work, don't worry that the answer button won't work when I receive a call, don't worry that it's going to freeze up for no reason...
The kitchen is fun, and with my Apache, was a lifesaver.
I just don't feel the bugs I get from the kitchen outweigh the bugs Sprint's 6800 rom gives me (I haven't actually found any, yet.) With the Apache, the equation worked the other way around.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb Preview Image v04 - 2/7/2011

First of all I have to thank the CM people, especially mbm, nemith, fattire and cvpcs for their work on gingerbread which helped me a lot in understanding where to look and what to patch.
The whole thing is based on the honeycomb preview emulator images, some of the B&N modules+driver, pieces from the upcoming CM7 and manual patching ARM assembler in libraries, writing ugly scripts to hack around various issues, a lot of time and many brain cells.
Use this on your own risk. I'm not responsible for any damages. This is not meant as a primetime ready rom. This is a preview after all.
The unzipped image is around 3.5gb and fits on 4GB SD cards.

patched in some graphics improvements. Can play non-hd videos from m.youtube.com
sdcard storage
v01 - 02/01/2011
initial release
Status
What works:
Graphics acceleration
Accelerometer
Wireless!
Touchscreen
Buttons
Sleep/Wakeup
Sound
Known issues:
The accelerometer behaves funky. Will try to fix this.
The Gallery app crashes when opening an image. Not my fault, it's broken in the emulator from google too.
Doesn't work:
DSP e.g. no hardware video decoding (and will possibly never work before the AOSP release)
FAQ
Q: Why?
A: I thought it would be fun. It was and still is. And now developers have an actual device to test their apps on instead of relying on the slow emulator.
Q: How?
A: I'm planning to write a blog post. Mostly learning how Android works, debugging, patching, reusing binaries from different sources, finding easy ways to reach a goal, try and error, a lot of brain power.
Q: During boot I get stuck at the Android screen with the blinking cursor.
A: It seems to be a timing issue with mounting the partitions. Sometimes rebooting helps to get it booting. If not a different SD card might to the trick.
Q: Why is there no Market app installed?
A: There's no legal way to distribute the google apps with a ROM.
Q: Angry Birds, Nook reader, Kindle app?
A: Yes.
Q: I want to port Honeycomb to device xyz... send me the instructions how to do that now!
A: I like the 'I' in that sentence - but there are no instructions, no source, no nothing. Learn and read about Android, Android porting, making custom roms, embedded systems, ARM assembly, driver programming, programming in general, the Linux Kernel and much more - and when you're comfortable and have experience with all of that come back and do your port.
Q: Can you port Honeycomb to device xyz?
A: I don't have xyz. And even if device xyz would magically appear at my front door doesn't necessarily mean I'll have the time and motivation to port anything to it.
Q: I want to use a different kernel what changes did you make in the kernel?
A: https://github.com/rbrune/nook_kernel
Q: Where can I donate?
A: I don't want any money. If you want to put your money to good use donate to a humanitarian organization and/or the EFF.

awesome, time to mess around with this.
Amazing work. I'm always impressed when people get an SDK image booting on a device and working properly, but this isn't even technically a tablet! It's an e-reader that was hacked. Unreal.
Keep up the good work.

Do you need money? I want an app for my son

As the title says, I need an app for my son and I want to pay for it..
So here is the deal:
If anyone can make me an super simple card game where you basicly have
a deck of cards, and when you swipe the deck (left to right) an animation
pushes the top card a way and the next card appears.
The cards must me stored in a array, xml or database (what ever is best)
so that i can add info for each card. IE: If the card is a "6 of dimonds" i want
to show description for that card.
This must be a simple task (I hope)? So, who is up for it and how much will
it cost me? If I get an response I will send the mockup for how the game works.
In the mean time, here is an tiny, simple javascript example I made just now.

I was thinking both, just that the tablet version had a diffrent layout.?
I'm a web-developer, so i know my way around PHP, Javascript and MySql Databases. I was also thinking this was a nice way for me to get an insight on
how android apps work, so if you can do this, It would be nice if you add a lot of comments in the code
If you send me an e-mail to myusername at gmail.com, I can send you my sketches?

After working around a while, I've got a button which prints a random card with a random card type and a random card number with the remaining cards.
But still I've got the issue that the program doesn't yet list all the drawn cards. It just draws e.g. "Cards left: 38 Card: spades 51
But the draws before are removed.

Did you look at the javascript code here http://jsbin.com/eluseh/3/edit#source ?
As you can see there, when the game is created, an array containing the cards are created. When ever a new card is delt, one card is removed from the array. Now what you can do, is first put in in a new array, ie. "deltcards". Then remove it from the deck..

Even though WinRT and WP8 run a similar kernel, there are some differences to the certificates. All we can do right now is wait.

this is an article about reading from the SD Card. Yes, that is possible but it means nothing to getting root access right now. You still canNOT read from outside of the Documents, Music, Pictures folders and the isolated storage of the local app you are trying to read. As long as you can't touch the System partition, you won't be able to do anything. So we are back at square one mate

but a file Manager that reads documents photos and sdcard is missing as simmilar as a Version that has root accses
im missing usb thetering on phone
Microsoft decided that phone apps should not be able to read most common file formats. We can't even read a god forsaken XML file from SD cards.

You truly are NOT getting the point are you... lol.
We are stuck at waiting until someone with experience can potentially find the smallest fluke to exploit. As it's looking right now, Microsoft put the epic lock & chain on WP8.
I am pretty sure they will make it possible eventually, just the way they did in WinRT. The kernels are not yet fully unified yet.
Hopefully.

it is a Basic function of Windows that has make Windows big and then they stoped it very bad
They didn't just leave it out, they left it out for a reason. The file system is a huge security vulnerability. They probably made it a priority to get it working on RT first then WP.

ihope you are rigth
isn't it NTFS?=== but the source Settings -> Mobilephone Memory can read it
The operating system is clearly not a mallware.
Yeah... security is about preventing unauthorized actions. If I'm explicitly authorizing an app to access my filesystem (hell, make it a popup message box confirmation, like for apps that use the GPS), it's because I want the app to access the goddamn filesystem.
WRT at least still has Explorer and CMD and Powershell and such... WP8 lockdown is not about "security" in the proper sense, it's about control. The average user doesn't know enough about security to make good decisions there, but Android's popularity has only increased as it has gotten easier to root the devices. Meanwhile, iPhones (which are also all about control, and it's not in the hands of the user) are in a relative decline (marketshare, not absolute numbers) and have lost nearly all their first-mover advantage in the "modern" smartphone wave. Microsoft never had that advantage (they squandered what they had with WinMo and were late to the current wave) and their control-freak-ism is directly hurting them (as a random example, VPN apps were possible on Android even before there was on official VPN API; you just needed root).
A lot of developers have expressed their need to use the file system. I am sure Microsoft will eventually allow it.

Imaging software

Hi all, I have two Samsung S8+ phones purchased at the same time and now I have to turn one in for an upgrade, while planning to keep the other. The issue is the one with all of the info/apps I want to keep has a giant scratch on it, while the other is in perfect shape.
Since they are identical phones, it doesn't seem like a stretch to take a direct snapshot image of the phone and copy it over, i.e. EVERYTHING is preserved, apps, their status, all settings, etc. But I don't know if there is such software that will do this. I'm enough of a script kiddie to be able to follow directions of creating an image/flash an image, if anyone can kindly point out such directions.
Fingers crossed. Thanks in advance!

The software you need is already on both devices
The Samsung Smart Switch app works just fine.
My wife has upgraded her phone every year since the Note 2 and has never used anything else.
All text, call logs, ringtones, music, apps and settings are transferred without error.

Unfortunately this is totally wrong. Smart Switch does not support backup/restore of application data:

Strange it has worked for us without an issue for almost 8 years
Exactly what app data are you worried about loosing ?
Facebook chat logs ?
Aren't all modern apps data saved to the cloud in one form or another ?

What is strange is that you feel that your requirements being met must neccessarily suffice for the rest of the world.
The ask is the ask. If you don't have the answer, there's no need to get me to accept what you perceive is an adequete solution.

You programmatically create a ( complete ) backup ( clone ) of phone #1 - only a small script is necessary to do this - on a high capacity external SD-card plugged into phone #1, then move that SD-card to phone #2, finally being on phone #2 ( what must be rooted if Android system is also backed up !!! ) programmatically restore the backup - again only a small script is necessary to achieve that.
The necessary scripts preferredly are Windows batch-files that make use of ADB.
