New Nook Tablet Wednesday?

Just saw something mentioned on verge as well as ifans.com about a possible new nook tablet (8 gig instead of 16) possibly coming out this wednesday? Anyone else heard any news on this?
http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/20/2811295/nook-8gb-tablet-to-launch-february-22nd
Take this how you will...but...brother in law does work for walmart as a manager in electronics and DID confirm a new one IS being released....was not sure what day though. So perhaps there IS truth to this rumor/post what have you?
Another new tablet?
Yes, I read an article early this morning when I giving my NT a CM7 makeover. I wonder if this one will have a camera. I am a serious fan of the Nook devices and grateful for devs who are willing to delve in and expose the true nature of these devices .

My bet is on a lower price point and fewer features to better compete against the Fire.
I'm guessing that in addition to lower storage, the new one'll have a certain miracle security hole blocked...

You win the bet! But 8G of memory instead of 16G seems to be the only change in features.

There also appears to be half the RAM for the 8 gig version.
Nook Color ????? Only difference I guess would be the processor.

The screen is better in the NT than the NC, and the weight is slightly less. I'm wondering what the price of the NC will drop to now?
NC is now $169

I wonder how that'll affect performance.
I compared the xloader and uboot source code for 1.4.1/1.4.2. The big differences I could see all had to do with accommodating for the new crappier memory chips. Also saw a reference to an "ELATION" device, which may be the codename for this crippled POS. Nothing that I found changed or related to the bauwks bl hack.
Seriously... 512MB is what the Nook Color has. I suppose if you look at this as an upgrade for the nook Color, it's okay. But it's a severe downgrade for $50 IMO. Dunno.

Should be fine with the 4 gigs of ram, use ccache some decent swap, and you might need to shrink the java emulator size, also be sure to use 64 bit ics+
Here is a commit to help with the java emulator while building

It might work. But very less chance of working in machines less than 4gigs of ram. 4gigs of ram would be the minimum configuration.

It's always worth maxing your memory you'll notice good performance gains and will speed up compile times significantly. 4 GB should be no more then $20-$40 so it's a great upgrade for the money

It should he just about enough to make a ROM, but I think you should install more RAM to your laptop, just in case.
RAM should be fairly easy to install...
Good luck on making your ROM!

In order to compile ROM's (AOSP from source) and kernels (From source) you will need to use a UNIX based operating system such as OSX or Linux, personally I would recommend dual booting your laptop with Ubuntu 11.10 to maximize compatibility for compiling ROM's and kernels. For making apps you can use either Linux or Windows, and I would recommend using the IDE Eclipse for Android app development. As far as actually building your hard drive is a little small and could run out of space if you intend on building a bunch of different ROM's and kernels (A full set of AOSP builds is 80+ GB), and with 3 GB of memory compile times, will be pretty slow (For example to compile an AOSP build of Android 4.2 for the Nexus 4 would probably take around 5-8 hours, kernels will take anywhere from 1-2 hours probably) also if your laptop only has a single or dual core processor this will also effect compile times.
O.k. thanks for your reply sir.so could you recommend a Linux computer that I should buy as long as what specs should I get as far as how much memory, hard drive, etc.and out of curiosity what would a computer like this cost me.I want to thank you for your time and expertise. Take care!!!

If your just building kernels and some apps then yes, your laptop should be fine. For kernel development it's important to at least have a solid understanding of C, the Linux Kernel, and embedded development for that I would recommend the following books:
Practical C Programming: 3rd Edition
Understanding the Linux Kernel Third Edition
Embedded Linux Primer: A Practical Real-World Approach (2nd Edition)
As far as book for app building goes make sure you understand Java and XML, I would check out these books:
Professional Android 4 Application Development
Head First Java (3rd Edition)

[Q] Will the gnex be a high end phone?

so will the gnex be a high end phone as in having desktop convergence? according to their website, for it to be a high end phone, it needs to have a quadcore a9 processor. otherwise it fulfills every other aspect. this phone has a dualcore a9 processor, so will there be desktop convergence. I really hope there will be I want to try it out.
Well from what I saw, every video demo etc. Was specifically the galaxy nexus. At one point I did see "a" phone connected using the desktop feature. Each phone I saw using the Ubuntu mobile has been the nexus.
Edit : I've also heard the specs released aren't final and just a figure for certain phones.

that's OEM specs, which doesn't mean much for download/install version potentially. The values of which would have been decided are best to give the full desktop experience - including downloading alot of desktop apps. Time will tell, but I suspect desktop version will run perfectly on GNEX, or any other internal memory only phone - it's just a matter of keeping your eye on space available when you are installing Ubuntu native apps.
I'm also wondering if the Desktop Feature will simply be disabled on devices with lower than recommended specs. I have seen some Ubuntu on Android videos using a Motorolla Atrix II which has exactly the same hardware as the GNex. It ran the desktop and even Ubuntu TV pretty good considering it was early in development (1 year ago) and running ontop of Android with bridges to access the phone settings and apps.

Intel HD 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce 740M (Optimus)
4GB RAM, 500GB HDD
Works great, with AnTuTu score of 125k. Even multitouch on the touchpad works, including gestures, but works terribly with the file manager.
Toshiba Satellite L55
i5 5th gen 2.40hz
8gb ram
1tb HDD split into three partitions 450gb for Windows, 500gb for Linux Mint, and 32gb for RemixOS on an ext4 format.
I also have a 16gb USB drive for other computers.
Dell Inspiron 7548 with UHD Display
i7 5500U 3.0GHz
16GB RAM
32GB Sandisk USB 3 Flashdrive with UEFI boot
Works amazingly well. No WiFi After sleep, however.
Acer R14 Convertible, Triple Boot (Windows 10, Ubuntu, Remix OS), Core I7, 1 TeraByte drive, 8 GB Ram.
About 18 months ago I tried to install Androidx86 directly onto my sole laptopn, an Acer Aspire 1410 (2011 I think), single core netbook, but a decent one at that.
I'm pretty dran good at making/breaking things, but this time I screwed up and lost my Windows OS, with Android never working. Then life's dramas took over, and fixing it became low-priority.
But I needed a laptop again and, right on time, Remix OS drops, and right now I have my old faithful laptop back, running my favourite OS (I really just do not need Windows anymore).
Sadly, I'm limited to running it off USB2, and I've not found a clever way of installing it to the HDD without an initial copy of Windows to work off.
Use Universal USB Formatter with a non-Linux installation method install to local drive then use rmxtools to expand the data image to whatever size you want. Then you Acer boot to RMX OS.

it should be some of the best machine to use this windowed android experience, except right now it is a pain in the ass to make it work with bigger space than standard 4gb data img, because it is one of those 32bit uefi/32bit windows on 64bit capable system...

What are your PC specs?

I'm just curious how everyone's computers hold up to one another. Here's what I'm rocking:
Manjaros Linux KDE Edition
i7 5820k (4.4ghz overclock, up from 3.3ghz)
ASRock X99 Taichi motherboard
8gb of Crucial Ballistic (DDR4) at 2400mhz (2133mhz) with stock timings
Gigabyte AMD R9 280X Windforce Edition (stock settings, opensource driver)
500gb 7200 RPM HDD Seagate
1tb 7200 RPM WD Black
Corsair CX650M PSU
Fractal Design R5 Case (I love this thing)
So that's that. I've got a disk drive in there too. So what's everyone else rocking? I know for the Haswell E platform my specs are pretty underwhelm vut I've been pretty happy with it over the last 2 years and it will be my desktop for years to come with a few upgrades like an SSD and more RAM.
All I can say is you have 8GB RAM and no SSD yet such a expensive CPU/Motherboard??

At one point there used to be a thread that posted specs and build times. It was one of the few places that, before we started covering this, you could start to figure out what was good for builds.
My "daily driver" is actually busted at the moment and I'm trying to track down a new AM4 mITX motherboard to get it going again. So the Coffee Lake test bench is what I work off for the day job and have recently been playing Destiny 2 on. I pull that m.2 drive though nowadays when I start testing - I have no desire to reinstall Windows. Again. (Linux I'm okay with doing.)
Kind of low specs here, but worth mentioning

My "daily driver" for non-development usage is a pretty old laptop

Does yours seem quiet? I need to get a longer USB cable and a boom for it but that's one of my biggest reasons for not using it when I stream at the moment.
