Dropped my Note, squaretrade warranty tale - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Thought this might be interesting for some to see how a Square trade accident coverage situation goes. I will update the thread as new events occur. If this isn't kosher to some, please delete. I searched the forums hoping to find a similar thread but found nothing.
I accidentally dropped my phone in my basement Sunday the 19th and filled out a claim form online on the 20th at approximately 12:30 pm central time. I was asked if I preferred to be mailed a refurbished phone of same or similar specs but since I use my phone for work I chose repair mainly in hopes that they can fix it and I won't have to go through hassles of installing a tibu backup. If for some reason they opt not to repair it figure it'd be nice to start fresh with a new Note. I entered my credit card information to be charged the $99 deductible to begin the process.
After filing the claim you are given information that they will contact you within 1-2 business days from submitting. Currently I have not been contacted after 1.5 business days have gone by (full day today, half the day before). They state to call them if I am not contacted in this time but after 15 minutes of being on hold I figure I can waste time doing that tomorrow when a full 2 days are up. The current status online is that an agent is being assigned to my case.
About the phone: It fell about two feet from my couch to the basement cement floor and cracked the lcd diagonally across. There is a chip in the top right corner of the ceramic and dents in the metal around it. It was housed in an elago case which I now regret as it protected nothing. Phone is still functional and has been backed up for when I am able to send it in.

Well that was quick. Moments after posting I received an email with the prepaid next day air UPS label to send it to their depot in LA. What I am hoping is that if they choose to repair the lcd that the chipped corner will be addressed as well as it snags my shirt. Fingers crossed.

Definitely interested to see how this works out for you. Wish you nothing but the best. Good luck.

Ya i would love updates on this too. I have so many warrantees through them but have never had to use it yet.

I always read about how people bust their phone so easily and it baffles me that I've never broken a screen yet. I had my iPhone 4 in my lap sitting in a van and got out forgetting it was their and it fell off my lap face down onto concrete and no scratches to the screen. I had my Note in my hand and accidentally hit my hand on a car door when I was getting out and it bounced onto the concrete below, face down. Got a couple chips on the bezel but that's about it. But yours busted falling two feet off the couch. So weird....

What was weird was I expected it not to be broken. It's definitely not the first time it's slipped out of my hands, but it's been a trooper and kept in tact until the short drop.
Anywho...
Got bored and google searched the place they are having me mail it to. It's these guys: http://www.cfrepaircenter.com
Some spotty reviews online, so fingers crossed. Wouldn't be too happy to spend $100 + original cost of the warranty to get a shoddy repair. I'm going to add a note about the broken ceramic and jacked up metal portion in hopes that it is addressed. I'll post pictures tomorrow to show a before and after.

It depends a lot on how the phone falls. The corners of an LCD screen tend to be weak spots, so it can often crack if it lands on a corner which sounds like was the case here.

With this phone the LCD, front glass, and bezel (the silver band) are one unit. So a cracked glass = entire front replaced. The part costs about $200.

That's good to hear. Would be disappointing to have a marred up corner after the service.

There are a lot of little hairline cracks in the LCD as well that don't show too well. Using a Captivate right now and even with CM10 Jelly Bean, I know I'm going to be missing the Note immediately. Off it goes in the morning!

Is that after putting your note back to stock?

You could sneeze on this bezel and it dents it is weak....its unbelievable I am on my third and the bezel has had issues on all three after one minor drop each...the things soft like cookie dough

I haven't bothered doing more than rooting and unlocking it for travel. I need my phone 24/7 for work, and stock hasn't bothered me one bit (ICS or GB) on this. The phone is encrypted, if security was the question.

The finale!
Well, I got my phone back today. Looks terrific. I'll post pics later if needed, but if you know what a new Note looks like, that's what it looks like. Even arrived with the annoying little stickers that came on the bezel. Looks like they even replaced the plastic battery cover.
One minor thing is the phone was returned reset to factory due to my refusal to give up the encryption password. It's not a big deal as I ran a backup, just thought I'd mention it. I understand they needed to do QC before calling it fixed.
Have a new Otterbox Commuter case on the way tomorrow!
Decent service, fast turnaround, and pretty impressed all around. A tad bit expensive at $100 deductible but considering the cost without accident insurance and having to install the LCD myself, this was well worth it.

Thanks for sharing!

This was dropped out of my pocket as I was getting out of the car... so not even from above waist height!
if you go to ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung-Galaxy-S-III-Teardown/9391/2 you can see it mentions the fact that the screen is a fused unit, will be very hard to get an "unofficial" one.
Looks like a sammy only repair job

Pictures posted. can you view them? just got that photobucket account as I am away from home right now.
I have dropped my old SGS2 and SGS from higher than this and I got a light scratch... this has made me loose ALL faith in the build quality.
How come the front and back got damaged at the same time /?????????????????????
Yeah been looking into getting it fixed. Around 3-400$ for the screen then plus the camera housing... may as well buy new phone. Hence the appeal for bricked devices on here...
Saying that, I dropped mine also getting out of the car... It didn't even scratch, just dented the plastic on the side of the screen.
The worrying thing is, the screen is exactly flush with the bezel and so is not protected at all when it falls - you might have been unlucky on how it landed!

Maan... today it happened to me. Dropped out of my pocket when I got out of a cab. The screen is ok, just some tiny scratches at the top right (I can live with that), but the bezel looks like crap at the bottom left, that's probably where it hit the ground after the fall, then falling onto the screen where it got the scratches.
Does anyone know whether the bezel can be repaired or replaced? I guess I was lucky, but still... now I have a shiny new phone that's just a few days old... and it looks like... an idiot dropped it.
Just my Own story
I didn't have my SGS3 for 24 hours yet, and I have broken the screen. I use my phone as a alarm clock, the alarm rang in the morning after getting the phone waking me up, I hit the snooze button and went to put the phone back onto the bedside table, about 3-4 feet off the ground, I guess I slightly miss positioned in in my not so awake state, it fell to the ground, I hadn't thought too much about it as I had way worse falls with my SGS2 and never anything, but wen I picked my phone back up I could not believe that there was a big crack across the screen... I thought Gorilla glass 2 would of been much stronger. I'm very disappointed with the durability, I can live with it but every time I look at the unit it just reminds me of how easily that was broken, and it disappoints me all over again, I don't see a big reason to spend the ridiculous amount of money to replace the screen for the one crack across the screen, BUT it sure is a sore thumb.
Overall I'm extremely happy with my Samsung Galaxy SIII but VERY disappointed with the durability. I guess it is also my fault, I was so EXTREMELY satisfied and happy with my SGS2 that wen they released the S3 I just jumped on the occasion to get it and never waited for any reviews and customer testimonials as I would normally do wen considering buying anything, especially something at this price range. I will however learn from my mistake.

Dropped my evo a few times already

Gotta say, thing is built sturdy. First dropped on the bottom, made a minor scruff you can barely notice. And then I dropped it on a weight, it hit the back of the phone thankfully and made a dent in the metal. If it was glass, gone. Still works, nothing is acting up, got a case to help further prevent these accidents. But I'm happy so far, HTC seems to make good build phones. I remember dropping my original evo 4g while biking and it only scruffed the edges up, and not even that bad.

Bought my EVO LTE at best buy, I'll never make that mistake again, those people are idiots, anyway it only took a 3 foot drop to completely demolish the screen, because of my low post count I can't post the pic but you can follow the link just add the h t t p stuff in front of it --oi45.tinypic.com/292ognd.jpg
Asurion sent me a replacement, the broken one still worked so I didn't mind the 5 day wait, when the replacement got here I noticed something was wrong with it right away, got hot, reboots, settings changing at random etc etc... worst thing about it was connecting to my router through wifi would bring both the router and cable modem down, I never did figure that one out.
Called Asurion yesterday, told them the story, they tell me the lte is on backorder and they will send one out to me as soon as they get a shipment in, I thought wow this is turning out to be a major fiasco, came home from work today and the new phone was sitting in front of my door, that was FAST!
So far this 3rd LTE seems to be working good even though I've only had it a few hours, no problems yet, keeping my fingers crossed because I love these phones!
At least put a TPU case on that thing, just my two cents.
That dent would drive me crazy even if I put a case on it. Luckily I have full body shield and an otterbox commuter on mine
Sent from my HTC Evo LTE
I've got the Seidio Active Case. Best case ever. I had one on my EVO OG as well. This one is a way better fit.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I would HATE that dent. But I guess its good that you can live with it.
That being said, I can't stand cases anymore. I have an Otterbox on my og EVO and it drove me crazy after a couple weeks. Cases are too big and don;t slide in and out of my pocket easily. Also, it takes away from the aesthetics of the phone!
Good OP for not freaking out or going crazy. Too often around these parts you have people freaking the hell out about a tiny little scratch.
Yeah honestly it's not that bad. At first I didn't notice until I actually looked for it. It's hard to even take a picture in the camera, have to get the right angle. And I have my new case which covers it up anyway, hopefully it will keep it a bit safer. If something broke, then I'd be mad. But all is well so far!
Case seperation - Sprint won't fix
Ok so at least I'm not the only re-tard that drops his brand new $200 toy. I have had a run of bad luck lately with my Sprint phones. I broke my Evo 4g last winter when I fell with the phone in my pocket and cracked the screen. $100 later replacement from insurance and I'm out playing disc golf when I try to retrieve a disc from the lake...with my phone in my pocket.
Upgraded to the LTE ver, but there is something with the slick plastic and back on this phone, seems to slip out of pockets too easliy. Less than a week, and I dropped it out of my pocket onto a corner. To my suprise the screen did not crack, just a little divit in the plastic.
Two days later, BAM out of my pocket again, this time face down on a parking lot. Again screen intact, none the worse for wear. Then I put the phone in the pocket of a folding chair (wasn't going to let it fall out of my pocket again), but forgot until I went to fold up the chair and lift it up, BAM out of the chair onto the ground.
This time, not so lucky an got a little separation at the bottom between the two halves of the phone. I pay for insurance or "total equipment protection" so I took the phone into sprint only to hear that they can't work on the Evo LTE yet. I thought it was because I dropped it, but they said HTC would not yet Authorize Sprint Repair to work on the phone. Furious, I spoke to a manager who said the same thing. Out of luck unless I want to ship to HTC for repair. Phone still works, so for now I just got a gel case and I can't realy even see the damage now. Holding my breath that the phone keeps working.
but...im not a "re-tard"
but damn, that sucks. case is a must, at least if you want to make it look "pretty" after a some months.
I didn't drop my phone for the first time until after it was wrapped in the security of an OtterBox. I rarely walked around with it in my hand. I tried my best to keep it secure in a pocket of some sort. I figure it's a lot easier (and cheaper) to replace a case than it is to replace a phone.
I don't understand how people are cracking their screens so easily. I threw my 4G at a wall and the screen remained intact. It no longer worked, but it wasn't cracked. I dropped it numerous times onto various surfaces and the screen was not so much as scratched.

dropped you note?

How many times have you dropped your note?
I was terrified of dropping it at the beggining and I was so careful. I figured I would break easily because its so big.
I've dropped it many times. One time I dropped it from about 4-5 feet in the air onto a marble tiled floor, it fell with a deafening bang on its corner and bounced about 2 feet and dropped back down. It didn't even turn off. Just the card got ejected. So screw all you people who think plastic phones suck! They're so lightweight and so durable. Love those iPhone people walking around with cracked glass!!
I've probably dropped mine over 50 times, no scratches or anything its awesome, all I hear is iphone users whining about their screens being cracked

Yeah, and it shatters as soon as it hits the ground!
I've dropped mine twice. Once on concrete and the other I can't remember. Both chipped or dented the bezel but didn't damage the glass.

Ironically, I have dropped my note twice only after I got my otterbox defender case. Of course there was zero damage. I think I heard my otterbox case laugh and say, 'you call that a drop?'
Ive dropped mine once, but it was very low drop. it was fine, but reading other stories gives me chills.
I dropped it from about 4 ft, landed staright on its face and tons of cracks in the glass.
I put a screen protector over it, the pen works perfectly still since the screen isnt cracked and someone even told me they could barely tell because the colors are so vidvid.
I have insurance, but they want too much money and paperwork with the Note 2 right around the corner. I figure ill wait and try and find someone selling one for cheap/broken ports etc then give away 200$ AND my hardware that is still worth a bit of money.
the not cracked part has more area than a 3.5 in screen anyway
Dropped it agaim today. No case. Back popped off and battery fell out but no damage at all. Amazing.

I've dropped mine significantly only twice. Both times scuffed the silver housing, but the screen is still perfect. I could care less that samsung uses plastic, it holds up super well in drops. I have a tpu case, but I rarely use it...only when I'm out partying or doing yard work etc. Prefer to use phones nekkid.

My wife knocked mine out of my hand a few days ago (accidentally). It fell about 4 feet, and I went diving in for it... and missed. It skipped across the concrete a few times, and luckily only ended up with some scuff on the two side corners. I received more damage than the phone. It is truly quite durable. Apparently I need a skin protector for myself, more than a screen protector or case for my phone.

I guess I'll comment on what I've read so far.
I love the look and feel (and weight) of naked devices. Its a big device but its manageable without a case. So, though I've seen some nice cases, I'll keep it naked. Another thing, best buys insurance is much better, no deductible. It just doesn't cover theft.

Why S3 is like cheap toy?

Hi.
I've been my S3 from 3 weeks. In the last week my phone was dropped to the floor from 1 meters!

That all depends upon one the case and two the angle of the fall .
Mine certainly has prevented damage .

Agree on this. I never use my phone (s) without case and screen protector. I don't care if it has gorilla glass or not. Another advantage of this is that my phone looks like new even after couple of months.

Listen mate....I'm going to put you straight on one point here, so you just accept a few facts.
YOU dropped your phone, not Samsung, not anyone here, accept it and deal with it and take responsibility for your actions......and YES, you do need a case for your car if you are a rubbish driver and keep crashing......see the similarity?
This is what it is made of materials that cell, S1 and S2, so many times I fell down (on the asphalt, the tiles) and it worked, and S3, and the time it collapsed!

I don't believe in cases, I've had three smartphones and all three are working to date without cases. My first smartphone was the HTC Wildfire and when i first got it i also bought a $10 Hard case for it, one day my friend accidentally kicked the phone out of my hand and on the floor, the case shattered but the phone was intact. Since then I dont use any kind of case on my phones. On the S3 i use an screenprotector and an clear skin protector for the back(because it scratches easily), I have dropped it several times from a height of 1m-1,5m and the phone doesent even have a scratch on it. Either my phone is stronger than yours in some way or I'm just lucky

[Q] How to replace screen on Note 2?

Hello all,
I've done a search in this forum and only found one thread, but it wasn't clear to me how difficult it would be to replace the glass on my Note 2. There's a couple of YouTube videos that make it look somewhat easy... I dropped it today, and the glass is shattered all around. All the phone functions, including touch sensitivity, still work just fine.
I have absolutely no experience in replacing screens; do you guys recommend I go through insurance ($99), or try and replace it myself ($17 for a screen on ebay)? Also, how do I know if the digitizer is also broken?
Thanks!
Wow we both don't have good luck!
I just dropped my phone today as well, it fell out of my hand as I was getting out of the car but I thought it would be fine since it actually landed down my leg and onto my shoe, then onto the ground. I thought to myself "I hope I didn't scratch the glass!", but when I flipped it over the screen was completely shattered, no idea how.
I went through insurance last time I dropped my phone for $99, but that's because the display itself and not the glass was cracked, so if I go through insurance this time it will be cancelled after because I've files a claim twice. I did buy an Urban Armor Gear case for it right now so hopefully it won't break again.
Same issue for me though, just the glass is cracked, the touch screen still works perfectly. If I can replace the glass myself for $17 I'll go that route, but I'd like to hear from people who have done it or tried to do it.

I actually wussed out and ended up paying $99 for a replacement. Though the online videos make the screen replacement look somewhat easy, I was reading reviews of screen replacements for the Note 2 on Amazon, and a couple people damaged their digitizers trying to pry the screen off.. and ended up not getting insurance or a new screen . I don't have that kind of money to gamble with at this point.
Let me know if you are able to do it and how difficult it is. Just in case this sad situation occurs again.

I'll probably do the same thing. I'm waiting for my case to come in so when I get my second and last refurb through Asurion I can put it right in.
I read that when the screen is cracked it makes it really difficult to remove it as it will be in lots of pieces. This is what mine looks like after a small drop to pavement.

I had an epic failure when I tried to replace glass on gs3. I used a heat gun. And ended up burning the LCD trying to heat the glue.
You have to be really patient and skilled. So worst case.... You waste 17 dollars

I thought about that, but decided that since I didn't have a heat gun I'd either try it in the oven heating it to around 180, or just give in and go through insurance.
In in the same situation. Contemplating paying a repair shop to do it as it would be my second insurance claim.
Don't have experience on my note 2 but just replaced my wife's s3 glass. It shattered when she threw it at me and missed... Enough on that. Anyways watched a couple YouTube and did it myself. Turned out pretty good for never doing it before. Her screen was shattered. Here is what I did.
Things needed: hairdryer, utility knife, tweezers, small flathead screwdriver like the ones you use to fix eyeglasses, wd40, wipe cloth, 2mm double sided tape, about 2-3 house depending on how bad your screen is.
1. Order glass from amazon... Approx 12 bucks
2. Removed battery and backing
3. Used hair dryer on low to melt glue. I propped the hairdryer so it would blow on the screen constantly and still have both my hands free to work on glass.
4. Started in the spot where it was most shattered and used a utility knife to get out one of the small pieces along the side as my starting point.
5. Once I got the first piece out, I used the small screwdriver to go along and pry up the other pieces, using tweezers as needed for the small pieces.
Slowly work your way around phone. The small pieces were actually easier to take off than the bigger ones. Actually broke some of the big pieces trying to get them off. Need to be very patient here and make sure glue is melted while prying up. Also be careful to not dig to hard with screwdriver to get under glass or you may scratch, mark the lcd screen itself.
6. Once you get most if not all glass off, use WD40 and a cloth to wipe off left over glue. This really helps get glue residue off phone.
7. Wipe clean and tape along side and place on new glass.
Tip: before taping and placing new screen, put battery back in and start up phone. Line up and tape back/menu buttons. Did not do this the first time and they did not light up properly... Got cut off because was not aligned properly.
Total cost was around 15 for new glass and tape online. Noticed some minor nick marks from my screwdriver but cannot tell when screen is on. 98% happy with it and saved alot of money.

yeah fixing the screen is not for the faint of heart..they have some powerful adhesive thats connected to ribbon cables on the bottom around the capacitive buttons and if not done correctly youll tear those off or damage them. youll need proper tools and such to do it. A friend of mine felt very confident about it and tried fixing my screen and destroyed it. I got lucky and my sister let me use her eligibility to get a new one and now I have a (very expensive) external battery charger =)

Have you had any sensitivity issues?
Nope... Wife has been using with no issues. One tip... Make sure you tape/glue all around. If it is not securely down, you may have sensor issues. First time didn't tape properly and a corner of the glass was slightly up. This caused the touch screen to be unresponsive in that corner.
