USB alimentation, UMS, country version... - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I just got my i9100 (and surprisingly not a G neither P..!) and i have few questions. It's running on ICS LPW firmware. First I'd like to know how i make sure this is a phone from my country and not another.
Next i'd like to know how to know how to be in UMS mode (mass storage transfer) when i connect the device to the computer, without having to go in settings, plus, usb, mass storage...
I've had a Galaxy Note before and when pluging USB, i just scroll down notifications, select usb and then just switch to UMS... Here selecting USB in the notification bring me to choose either MTP or some photo mode...
Last thing : Is there a way to make the i9100 able to power on some 2'5 external hard drive (i have Western Digital Passport) just like the Galaxy i9300 (SIII) can do? I just tried and nothing happened... Maybe with some other kernel..?
Thanks.

To connect in UMS mode,
Go to Settings > Wireless & Network > USB utilities and click the button > then (and ONLY then) plug in USB cable
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII

Made another thread for this. The rest remains... PS: Another thing : Flash player doesn't work anymore on any browser..?

Copying problem from/to storage (USB)

I have an Samsung GS2 and i'm happy, but i have a problem with Win 7 Ultimate X64:
After 2.3.4 update, when i try to copy something from/to Phone/Card, My computer stop responding and it shows the error: "A device attached to the system is not functioning " and the mobile is showing on display "synchronizing". I have reinstalled the Windows but the problem persists.
I tested on a Windows XP x86 and it works grate.
What can i do to fix this problem?
anyone know this problem?
Looks like a drivers problem to me, if you didnt already, try to reinstall latest version of Kies (but dont forget to kill the kies process before using Odin if you plan to use it)

I tryed to reinstall Kies and drivers but with no succes.
I have this problem too and i resolve it by turn the plane mode on, don't know why but now all is ok ..
Try this.
1. Go to settings --> wireless and network --> usb --> usb mass storage
2. connect the usb cable
3. turn the usb mass storage (the android icon changes to orange now)
Go to my computer and you will now see phone and sd card storage as seperate....you should be able to copy fine now.

Hello!
I know this topic is old but I had the same problem with my Galaxy Note this morning and the solution was to disable USB Debugging.
Just to at least mark this topic as solved.

I had this problem with my Galaxy Note 4. I was using the original USB cable which was supplied with the phone. The error was showing up at random stages of the file transfer process - sometimes near completion, sometimes after a second or so; which indicates to me that it may be a hardware problem. So, I then tried using a different USB cable (cheapie from eBay), and it works fine! No brainer fix :silly::silly:
Same issue here - bad cable again in my case. Got a decent quality one and it works fine.
This worked on my Note 4 - Simple Settings -> Developer opions -> Check USB Debugging

Android 4.2.2: Always mass storage mode when I plug in USB?

If it acted like secondary Launchers did and you could set it to default easily, then yes. Otherwise I don't know of a way to do that, but really, is going into the status bar and changing it that big of a deal?
AW: Android 4.2.2: Always mass storage mode when I plug in USB?
Just go to settings -> connections -> USB and choose what you would like to do for default
No connections option on 4.2.2
No connections option on 4.2.2

Select Settings>Storage and then select menu(In most phones the menu is the left touch button). Then you can see USB computer connection. Select it and tick Mass Storage. You are done.
4.2.2 does not have that option

I have been going out of my mind ..staying up late trying to figure out why my Galaxy S4 was not being recognized. It seemed like all I was getting was NO where fast. Mostly thinking I had to root and bla bla bla. But this may have been the answer. I just saw the USB symbol pop up on my phone. Fingers Crossed this is the solution
THANK YOUUUU

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (GT-P3113) . Here's the question. Can I use this on it and how do I punch it in? Right now it is A) showing a red x in the battery when plugged in, but still charging; and B) not recognized by my computer when I plug it in there, and yes, I have the correct drivers installed. Thank you.

[Tip] Re-enabling Mass Storage Mode Android 4.2.2

Just wanted to share some tips to those who wanted to re-enable the Mass Storage Mode on their Android 4.2.2
1. Connect your phone to a computer (The device will be connected in MTP mode as default)
2. Reboot your phone while connected to the computer
3. Wait until you see the USB icon on your Notification Bar
4. You will now have an option to select Mass Storage henceforth
:cyclops:
I'd appreciate a "THANKS" if this helps you.

Nope this does not work as advertised in the OP. Neither is there a "USB mass storage" option anywhere in the device's settings. Thanks anyhow.
Update: still no. I rebooted several times. No joy. I tried rebooting into recovery mode-- disabled if it's connected to a PC. Still no.

Will this option work for jelly bean 4.2.1?
No joy. This either never worked or this trick is obsolete. I have plain stock kitkat 4.4 on my phone (htc one google play ed) and mass storage appears to be completely removed now. stuck with sh!tty MTP/PTP that does not permit transfer of non "media" files. Best solution I can see is getting an SFTP client and xfer over wifi. Why oh why is Google turning evil and doing hacker-hostile and becoming as annoying as Apple?

I feel you. I stopped using anything i[whatever] for any reason because of the stupidity of the storage and transfer software. Now google is doing it. Must join google+ to give feedback on an app? Seriously? Can't access content on my SD card unless the file type meets an arbitrary set of criteria? I'm just waiting for Ubuntu Touch to be ready for an SGH-T989 and I'll dump google next. Either that, or I go back to a damn flip phone and leave all this crap behind.
@bejunk
thanks for the build.prop suggestion, although i cant get the option "MTP, PTP, UMS" in Storage setting, at least i can use UMS...
here's what my opinion;
using MTP;
-faster data transfer
-less reliable; prone to get "cant copy file, phone not responding"
-and if delete file while in phone, connect to PC the file is still there
using UMS;
-slower data transfer
-more reliable than MTP, in my case its secure, no error unless youre "massaging" your phone (blame cable)
-if delete a file while in phone, connect to PC the file is deleted (which is good, no evidence )
UMS is better than MTP in my case
btw, im GT-i9100G SlimKat 4.4.2 (yes, i know this is Sony section)
nope
not working on asus transformer TF701T , thanks anyway

I do not yet have root on my trasformer pad, until last night I thought that UMS was required to get root. I just need to install the fastboot drivers which I thought I had already done. I will update if it turns out I'm wrong (again), all this stuff with the ADB's, fastboot and cmd is confusing me; I have had to root, unroot, wipe, flash etc. loads of times on my galaxy ace but all that had could be done from the phones recovery almost instantly. geuss i'll just have to sort of evolve and get used to it being harder to root and install a recoveries now!

[Q] Usb connection error, usb not recognized

Hy everyone!
I have problem with my samsung galaxy tab P7500..it wont recognize my usb. in notification bar shows that is connected but it is not. there is no folder od something with my usb staff. it worked fine, and then just stopped. i dont know why
before, when i connected usb, tab opened a folder of usb, but now nothing..
did i miss something? where did i get wrong??
please heelp!!
P.S. sorry for my english
Switch to a different USB port. It seems like a stupid answer, but it is a common problem. Switching from the form factor USB ports (front panel) to the board mounted ports (rear panel) or visa-verse often works.
i know this may be an old post but here goes, i have the same problem, my PC tells me that the drivers for my tab are installed but i can not see it in my PC.
i connected it to different USB ports but still i can not see it.
i tried turning the debugging on/off still to no successes.

1) did you enable mtp under the storage options on your tab?
2) your USB cable might be defective. Try a different cable.

Hi
Hope somebody could help me.
my tab is p7500. official ics and rooted. i try to connect usb otg and it working by showing "USB connector connect" .
I can connect it with 1gb flash drive. But when i connect with 2 gb flash drive or higher, the tab will show "High-power usb device connected. cannot access to this device".
why it show like that? is the tab only can access flash drive with 1gb memory and below? or there is some setting that need to be done if want to connect with higher than 1gb flash drive?

I can't believe that the p7500 wouldn't support flash memory over 1gb. I've heard of people using a USB hub that has it's own power supply for OTG.

Test on another PC, and if that doesn't work - replace USB board - look for Keithross39's guide in General (search for 'replacing USB charger board'), has all the info you need to get this done yourself quickly/easily/cheaply (~US$10).

thanks for the reply sir... that's the only thing left out for me to do... to try my device to another desktop or loptop.. since i only have one desktop at home....
sir how can i tell whether my phone is a genuine one? can fake samsung devices be recognize by kies? on usb or wifi kies?
Verify that your phone is closed all applications (hold "home" key -
management activities - close applications) and move to the main screen.
Open the Samsung Kies program first and then connect the usb cable.
If the fault persists, uninstall the driver (Samsung Mobile Usb) from "Device Manager" on PC
and restart your computer.
Once you restart your PC, and open the Samsung Kies, plug the phone in order to re-install the
driver.
If still no go even restart the phone and try again
Try also another usb port and finally try another pc / laptop

Compare your phone to pics (Google search) of genuine devices, also Google & you'll find pics of fakes that you can also compare against (we've seen a few fakes on here over the past couple of yrs but not many, search for threads about this). Get an app like Android Hardware Info/similar (there are a number of similar apps on GP) which will give you the hardware details (CPU/GPU/etc) of your device & compare that to I9100 specs.
What makes you think it's fake ?
Cpu-z is a good app (free on google play) for see Android's details about hardware/software.
I've never heard of fake s2. It sounds so strange
Quiet, that you are neither the first nor the last to have problems with USB connectivity to PC. They are quite common problems.

coz there's a a lot of fake samsung products here in the Philippines... and by now it's really hard to identify which is original or fake.
those people who created those clone phones is getting better day by day. way cheaper but looks exactly the same.. i think they made

Don't forget to test different USB ports in your laptop or PC. Last resort could also be (if you're under windows, obviously) deleting the USB root controllers within the Control Panel > System > Device Admin and then reboot. In my experience, I don't need to reinstall Samsung's drivers and usualy recover the USB cable connection.
