80 G9 gps problem... - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
After a few hours, my tablet was forget in plain sun in car, the GPS doesn't start. It appear to receive 6 to 8 sats, but none available. Restart, kill maps, tried again with 'GPS test'. Same result.
I'm stuck in Greece without gps...
Any ideas?

I don't think the heat had anything to do with it. Mine is the same way. You can get a USB GPS receiver that works great.

My GPS doesn't work either, I can see 8-9 satellites on GPS Test outdoor with a blue sky after 20 minutes but no fix.
I have contacted Archos support requesting a fix or an exchange.

My receiver was working properly. I don't want another external receiver, I want my tablet to work ok.

Don't we all. Just something that happens with the 80g9. The transformer prime has the same problem.

I did one experiment: I've set the CPU freq to 600MHz and the GPS was working again.

I went back to honeycomb and the GPS was fixing fine. I upgraded back to 4.0.7 and now it fixes as well as in Honeycomb !
I don't really understand what is going on but the problem is fixed for me.

I experienced the same problem with my device delivered with ICS 4.0.7.
After extensive testing I found out the following workaround:
Restart your device completely and then run google maps.
After stopping this app run your nacigation app ( for me SYGIC). Now gps is working again.
You can also validate with gps test.
It works well for me, but I'm waiting for an update from Archos which solves this problem.

GPS doesn't work

Hi guys
I bought a P500 on 25 October and GPS worked fine in that period.
I have been trying to localize my position for two weeks but I didn't succeeded. Apps like Foursquare or Mobile Maps don't work.
Can I hope about a software problem? Could I try to solve the problem with a reset?
Or it's a hardware problem and I have to send my O1 to the assistence?
Sorry for my English
But what it don't work?
Doesn't find the GPS?
Or desn't fix position?

How long did you wait after GPS was switched on? Where you outside?
Try the programm "gps status" so that you can see whether it finds really no satellite or if you only have to wait longer for the gps fix.
hi guys thanks for the answers
I had problems standing outside with apps like 4sq or layar
This morning I did a reset (from privacy settings) and after that layar and 4sq worked again
After some hours I had issues again and I decided to try the app you suggested me (gps status). I managed to find the satellite and now it works again with 4sq and Layar.
what do you think about my problem?
Sounds hardware to me!

GPS Issues on CM9 and CM10

GPS has not worked on my phone in any build of Cyanogenmod 9 or 10. I am currently using Paranoid Android based on CM10 right now. I do not have Google's location services enabled if it makes any difference. I know GPS is not listed as an issue with these ROMs. Does anyone know a solution? Thanks in advance!

Running Epinter's unofficial CM10 without problems now. However, a week or so ago I was having problems with GPS taking way too long to lock (2+ mins). I installed FasterGPS from the Play Store (requires root) and restarted my phone. This seemed to have solved my issue.
How long did you wait before concluding GPS wasn't working?

I rarely used the GPS on the Atrix and realized something was wrong after it not working for the 3rd time or so. I believe using a GPS information app fixed it by forcing a download of the A-GPS data. I moved on to another device but I believe that was a temporary fix. Even then, the GPS was rather inaccurate.
Confirmed that fastergps works wonders. Great app.

on CM7 now, no lock.
i've tried diff apps in store no luck.

my S3's GPS not working

hi guys i have been testing my galaxy s3's GPS. i am using osmand app as my GPS app. sadly the app could not find any satellites and pin point my current location. even if i leave my S3's GPS active for a more than 5 minutes it could not get any satellites even if i am standing on a open area.
what should i do? how can i reset my GPS?
thanks in advance
Turn mobile data/wifi on and then try to use GPS. If GPS receiver doesn't have fresh AGPS data, cold start will take from 10 minutes to infinity.

Agree with you. Turn mobile data on. GPS or Glonass receiver use mobile network to fix the signal. When your position is done, you can turn off mobile data.
oh do you really need the mobile data active? was it possible to get your exact location without the use of wifi or mobile data? just your GPS? because osmand can download the maps offline then just use the GPs data to pin point your location. have you guys tried using the osmand app?
thanks
GPS receiver needs to download some (4-5 kilobytes) of data from server. This is called A-GPS, Assisted GPS. Without it, GPS still will lock onto satellites, but it will be 20-30 minutes instead of 2-3 seconds.

U only need data/wifi for first location fix and to dl. extra GPS data.when your location is found,u can turn of data/wifi and never use it again if u got downloaded maps.
Its just to get faster location fix on first GPS fix
I just tested my s3's GPS today in open air and got a lock within two seconds. phone locked 15 satellites. My phone is running completely stock rom and kernel.
So as others suggested, you should turn wifi or mobile data on so that A-GPS could work.
If you are worried about your app downloading more data and cost you money eventually then you may try app named "GPS Test". Its a very simple app and gives you some key info like satellites in view and locked to plus accuracy etc. It doesn't download any maps etc. Once you get locked, you can close the app and open your desired maps app.

hey thanks, because last night i was testing my s3's GPS if i have wifi connection my S3 can fix my current location around 2~3 seconds. i also saw my cousin's s3 and he also gets a fix location within 2~3 seconds. but i am not sure if his mobile data is active. that i would like to ask him again.
hehe thanks guys
Hi there,
I also have an issue with my GPS. Navigation is stuck at Searching for GPS.
Also when I run GPS test, it does not see any Satellites. I have my mobile data and WIFI on, and also tried to update the agps data with fastergps.
I have found different threads suggesting to uninstall maps but that did not help either.
Any ideas? (the issue existed on 4.0.4 stock, and also on latest aokp 4.1.1 build 3)
Thanks.
Also the GPS icon flashes briefly (like twice) and then disappears. Watching the notifications the same thing happens - Searching for GPS- appears briefly and then dissappears.
Is this the normal behaviour?

That usually means the phone has stopped searching for satellites for any reason, these usually are app-related.
Please download GPS TEST from Play store and report if it can find and lock on any satellites. If not or if it keeps loosing the connections, then something is wrong.
Make sure you don't let the screen turn off during the fix since that will disable the GPS.

I have tried GPS Test and it sees 0 satellites. I have also tried a couple of other apps with no success.
Even with GPS test running, display on, I still observe the same flashing of the icon and notification popping up, then disappearing after 2 seconds and reappearing again...
Have same problem. I tried GPS test. It take about 5-10s to lock the GPS. However, it will dropped after sometimes.
If some of you guys are not running stock ROM, then there might be kernel related.
I tried Temasek's newest kernel yesterday on my AOSP MIUI ROM, but couldn’t get a gsp fix.
Went back to siyah kernel and got fix within seconds.
Also try setting your regional pool with fasterfix

Aluminum Case
I thought my GPS was busted as it showed which satelites were available (agps had downloaded) but it woudn't lock.
I then took my aluminum case off the phone and discovered that this was interfering with the GPS lock.
So take your case off before assuming that the GPS is buggered. *sigh*
"My gps wasn't working on my phone. I took it to the Verizon store after I had flashed back to stock, they messed with it for a little while and then ordered me a refurbished one. I received it the next day and when I powered it on guess what the gps didn't work. So I called tech support and to my surprise the person that answered the phone actually knew what she was talking about.
She told me the gps issue is a Samsung issue, (even though is only effects Verizon and sprint phones) they are working on an update to fix it. But in the mean time she told me how to do a work around to get it working. Here is what she had me do."
Go to Settings
Application manager
click all at top
go to Google services framework
clear data
go to settings
Application manager
click all at top
go to maps
clear data
uninstall updates
Go to location services
turn off VZW Location service(leave it off to)
Power cycle phone
update maps from android market
now the gps should be working.

Same old GPS problems

Hello,
This is nothing new - this device has GPS problems with custom firmwares. However, I wanted to share my experience and thoughts and clarify a thing or two. Tried different ROMs, radios etc. with no success to get stable GPS for daily use with latest ROMs. So I discovered that GPS on older ROMs works differently than on newer ones. For example:
On CM 7.2 - GPS Status&Toolbox gets green even with one sattelite (fix/sat - 1/1) - it can get fix to 10+ sattelites but will never get a lock no matter how much time I'm waiting on it.
On CM 6.1, B 0.8.4, and probably stock - GPS Status&Toolbox firstly discovers sattelites (yellow), it needs at least 4 or more sattelites (yellow) to get a fix. Once it gets a fix (for example 4/4) it changes to green color and gets immediate lock. This is also how it works on my Hero and usually is pretty fast.
So could this be a GPS driver/software problem in the ROM and why can't we get it to work on CM 7.2 the same way it's on 6.1?
I really want to be able to use newer, beautiful custom ROM like HomICS, AOPK, but since there is GPS problems on them I'm stuck on 6.1 or stock.
Cm 7.2 is one of the few roms were GPS actually works properly for me, I've written much about my GPS experiances in quite a few threads and some of my own threads, have a look around, they might be worth a read.

Yes, I did read some threads even yours and tried practically everything mentioned there but without any luck. I've got a few locks with CM 7.2 but it was couple of times when I first flashed it (mobile network was active (3g), however, I dont use it, ever) and the next day it would fix to 10/10 or more but without any lock.
Even today I got practically immediate locks with 6.1. in 10 to 20 seconds. Frustrating that this is not working the same way on 7.2.
How about you, in GPS Status&Toolbox, is your device fixing to satellites one by one (becoming green) without getting a lock? Or it needs couple of yellows before it gets a fix?

I have found that GPS status and toolbox doesn't fully work with the legend, mainly using the clear GPS data and for downloading a-gps data. I used quite a few different apps and basically pulled my hair out through shear frustration till I found something that seamed to actually work.
I use GPS test by Mike Lockwood from the market, this seams to work for clearing GPS data and download a-gps, but generally don't use it as my primary GPS app,I use AndroiTS GPS test free from Alessandro Bonetti also from the market, but for some reason is very hard to search for.
Personalty on my device these apps are the only 2 that give me constantly good results were all the other GPS apps I've tried didn't.

Yes, I did read your thread and tried these apps too. With AndroiTS I was getting elev azim data but no success in getting it to lock.
What about your lock time in daily use, seconds/minutes/ tens of minutes?
I use cm 7.2 (latest nightly) out in the open my lock time can be any where between a few seconds (maybe like 10 seconds) and a few minutes (2-3).

To make things a bit more complicated, after using GPS once, I have to restart the phone. Otherwise, it will not lock again. The first time it will lock in under 1 minute.

Dell Venue 7 GPS not working

Hello, I need your help, xda.
I've bought Dell Venue 7 yesterday and GPS is not working at all.
Any idea why? I tried it with iGO and Google Maps. Also, I don't even have this "Localization" or "Location" (not sure, I'm not English native speaker) icon on top of my screen (taskbar?).
Do you know the solution to this problem? Or should I return my Venue? I still have 9 days to return it if I have to.
GPS is the most improtant feature for me, because I'm a truck driver and decided to go with GPS Tablet this time, instead of a normal GPS device.

I thought I had the same problem with my Venue 8 when I got it, but I found out somewhere that the first time you use gps it can take a long time to lock. I almost returned mine but I decided to give it a fair chance and downloaded a gps fix app and just left it searching for satellites until finally it started locking, and I got many more sats after updating the gps data as well. Now it works as it should and never takes more than a minute to get a lock so might wanna try that before you go through the hassle of a return. Also make sure you have your location set to high accuracy too! Good luck!

Hmm, you should have "Mode" under location settings where you can set the accuracy unless that just showed up on the newest update. Anyways good luck! If the next one has issues too then try a gps app and just let it search till it locks and update the gps data, took mine seemingly forever the first time.
