is this rom only flashable through recovery or is it also possible to flash ist in fastboot mode?
Or are there other possibiities to flash this zip-file?

1) extract FTF by using 7zip
2) open flashtool go to Advanced --> SIN Editor --> Dump data
3) open file "system.ext4" using ext2explore
4) save

Ok guys, I got it. File location of extracted "system" folder is the same one where is system.sin file. If u don't see folder than the value (that u use for extract) is incorrect. Try all of them, 2048, 4096 or 8192. If that doesn't work u can try this method given on the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32499599&postcount=150
Hit THANKS button if this helps.
EDIT: And this only works with GB system.sin files.

Tried 2048, 8192. 4096, 16384, 32768 amd stošš "Page size parameter is wrong."

Not woking, no matter what i do it dosen't work.

ok i tried as you mentioned...its supposed to create a system directory in the folder where it is located but it doesnt......it doesnt actually extract system.sin even if it says it's done in the command prompt
Nice work matey, everything ran smoothly.
Not sure if i'm the only nab in the house, but as there's no boot.img i flashed sirkays xray (was on cm9 previously and was too lazy to flash stock and root).
I used your guide to root the nordic 4.0.4 i have on my pc and it installed fine. Only problem i got was the poxy update notification for last update kept popping up. searched the Q&A thread and as suggested by *boy*racer*, i used root explorer to delete the updatecenter.apk (can be found in /system/app/updatecenter.apk)
No more update popups
Hope this is of help to someone
I have SE Xperia Mini Pro SK17i and I followed the guide and it's a pretty straight forward tutorial and all went fine and I had a rom which installed successful.
But then I realized that I had actually downloaded the .ftf for Xperia Active (ST17i) and not Xperia Mini Pro (SK17i) so my physical keyboard didn't work.
I downloaded the right .ftf Xperia Mini Pro (SK17i) 4.1.B.0.431 and done the process again but I'm getting the Error: Page size parameter is wrong.
I've tried (twice) 4096, 2048 and 8192 but I still get the error.
Any ideas please?

Hi, tried it but wasnt able to extract using all the possible page sizes. must be something wrong with what i'm doing.
Alternatively, i pulled the system folder from the phone, then added the system files to the rooted zip file.
i was able to flash the resulting zip file... but i only got a bootloop

I just tried it, n now Im on edited stock rom.. haha but for better root acess u need to update busybox n superuser binary..
Fyi I uncompressed it with 2048, and successfull.. I dont know why u cant.. :S
@OP: can you remove "FOR ALL XPERIA PHONES" from thread title? Since this doesn't work for all xperias, like Arc S and Neo V.
Extracted .587 ftf, work only with 2048 compression.
Anyway, do you know how to save more space for /data or /vendor partition? Usually when flash, /vendor or /data/idd is created and leave some unuse space there.

Nice guide. But i was hoping the other way arround. Like making a flashable rom + custom kernel to be a full .ftf file. That way i and every1 else can easily flash any custom rom with custom kernel using only flashtool.
Anyway thanks for the guide. Might giv it a try.:good:
I thought it would explain how to root android by yourself not just copy/paste but some people would like this way more. Lazy people

I thought about that too, so i searched google and there is a thread about a guy who tried to do it. However, he could not do it because to create sin files you need signature keys that only Sony has. in other words, only Sony can make that happen. :silly:

I think you can. We need to unlock bootlader for flash kernel. So flash system no need to unlock boot loader.
One question how do you make .sin file after extract it?
now we hane extracted system.how can we use it when its extracted.
any way to compress it?
please complete your guide.
thanks.
You can't create/repack a "system.sin" since it is proprietary file/format .
ftf file is just a zip file ...with .ftf extension instead .zip
( like .cbz for comics/Creader )
Thats why update.zip is used .

I am able to extract the file when using 8192, but after its extracted I can't find the system folder. I've tried it on windows xp and 7, but still the same. I'm trying to extract from .587 firmware.

Nice tutorial, there are some typos though,
You wrote http://http://androxyde.github.com/, in other words you wrote twice times the http
also it's kernel, not kernal!
Anyway, awesome guide,
Thank you!

i dnt think tht it will be error of yaffs tool it might be error with flash tool.. try once more with flash tool
Flashtool above 0.9.0.0 version is giving broken image file.
For now, use flashtool 0.9.0.0.
