kies will not update firmware on rooted phone - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have rooted my SGS3 using the ALLINONE root from SGS3 Toolkit (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488) and it works fine. About a month ago I got a notice about a firmware update and I installed it using kies. The root ofcause dissappeared but I used the toolkit to re-root the device. No problem so far.
a few days ago I got a new notice about another firmware update and wanted to install it using kies. Now however kies tells me that the device does not support upgrading (something with "initialising").
What can I do to get this firmware update installed?

Flashing stock rom wipes your settings. Make a choice, either get root and forget about Samsung updates or flash stock and forget about XDA, can`t have it both

Moved to Q/A

I am not in it for the ROMs but merely for the rooting. In general I like the stock-rom as it is but do need to have the device rooted in order to use some apps.

Last time, once you have root you can no longer install OTA`s, you can however upgrade witk Kies provided you have no custom kernel. You will loose root and you may loose all your settings. So it will be easier for you to download the new rom from sammobile and install it with Mobile Odin Pro and keep root and loose no settings and files.

I have the same doubts/problems...
Where do I find in SamMobile the ROMs? Are those the zip under OTA files?
Do I the use Odin? Is there a guide somewhere? (I did search and ended up in this post)
Cheers
P.S. I read on SamMobile something about not being flashable via recovery (correct?)

See my signature item 3 or 4 about Odin

Based on my experience you can take an update via Kies or OTA with root as long as the stock rom remains intact (no major mods). I have generally upgraded with a stock kernel. I have mostly lost root or at least had to fix permissions each time.
The settings have remained intact each time (titanium should take care of this any way)

You can download OTA`s but you can not install it as you have a custom recovery.
You can upgrade with Kies but you`ll loose root and you have to reroot it.
If you install the updated rom with Mobile Odin Pro you`ll upgrade and keep root, that is what i`am trying to say

Cool ... I should have mentioned I have always had a stock recovery if sticking with stock Rom. Because as you say the updates don't work with non stock recovery

[Q] unsuccesful root! plz help!

Hi guys noob here!
keepin it brief, i have brought a rooted galaxy s2 I9100.
it all works fine except:
- i cannot upload any data (songs/videos) to the fone
- update to ice cream sandwich (error message after data download)
- i cannot connect via kies air (browser error after connection)
attempting to re-root i have found a CNET how to root guide but with no luck
- my current kernel v is [email protected] #2
i have matched the closest insecure as well as secure kernel (I9100XWKDG) & attempted to flash them using Odin 3 but no luck
- i cannot unroot the phone either as i cannot flash a secure kernel using Odin 3
can anyone advise how to get the unusable phone features working again?
i dont mind if the phone is rooted or not
Grab a branded or unbranded stock rom or go to samfirmware and get a stock rom from there, flash the device and start fresh if you not bothered about root and want the stock apps back.
Selection of stock ics roms here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
im not to keen on wiping the fone just yet as i haven't backed it up fully,
in the meantime i downloaded odin3 v3.04 (was using v1.83 earlier) & re-attempted to flash the insecure kernel
the result was ''complete (write) operation failed''
any idea what this means ?
Edit: removed as I think I misunderstood some of your post.
So you are unable to flash the stock rom using ODIN?
Any how, not sure what it is going on, maybe you are not flashing the correct file.
I believe it is better not to use ODIN to root your phone, the new method to root is the safest and the easiest and you dont have to worry about your baseband version.
Here is the link on how to root GS2, the files needed can be downloaded from the link below the video.

Good Luck.

How did you get 4.0.3 software on your phone, the S3 comes with 4.0.4 firmware!
Afaik if you`re rooted and use a custom kernel upgrades will not be installed. The best thing to do is download the new rom from www.sammobile.com/firmware and and unstall it with Odin. Or unroot and reflash the original stock rom and to try install the upgrade.
Before unrooting reset the flash counter with TriangleAway 1.70, available on playstore and chainfires`s thread.
thanks.
it is not a custom rom it is the original rom just rooted it
when i reset it it kept the root so actually i just wiped out all content but root was still there
any thing i can do ?
thanks

You have to flash the whole original rom or the original kernel and than do a factory reset. Reset the binary flash counter first, see 2nd post.
thanks,
are you saying that just because i rooted the device i will not be able to update it and i will have to reinstall it all ?
it sounds a bit odd, as most of the devices are rooted and as far as i know they are getting updates.
i wouldn't want to start it all over from scratch and flush a new rom etc if not really needed
and then what ?
every time i will need to do that ?
so what's the point in rooting it ?

Once you root it, and update root will be overwritten and is gone.
What for me works best is to buy MobileOdin Pro and flash the latest rom of your country and by doing so you keep root. Uninstall Kies (exept the usb drivers) and forget about that. Just update your phone yourself when an upgrade is available
Apps and data can be stored with Titanium Backup.
not sure i understood what you're saying, sorry...
could you please try again ?

- Go to www.sammobile.com/firmware and download your latest rom from your country
- Uninstall Kies except the usb drivers
- Buy Mobile Odin Pro
- Flash the rom you downloaded, extracted once and placed on your sd card (md5. file) with Mobile Odin
- Done
still i don't get why ?
why did it happen?
everybody roots the device - are all resetting and flushing on each update?

You have a different kernel, not stock so updates will not be installed
If you update yourself with Mobile Odin Pro you don`t need samsung ota updates.
When in the future opdates are available you download the rom from www.sammobile.com/firmware and flash it with Mobile Odin
Settings will not be removed, unless it`s a major update like jellybean.

CF Root 6.4?
ZeevG, I am in the same situation as you.
Because of the method required to root the S3, we have the clockwork mod installed, I understand that this is the reason the update is not being installed.
I will be doing it manually today with Odin
thanks pal, it is now OK
i used Kies from PC and it went like charm - it is now updated and all as said is OK
thank you for your kind assistance and good will

Oke i` am glad for you
I've also had the OTA update automatically download into my phone, and it keeps asking me if it's OK to install it - but as I'm rooted, I don't want to!
I'll upgrade it myself via Odin at some point, but short of continually pressing 'Later' every three hours for the rest of my life, how do I kill and fully delete this pending OTA update?

root again, back up all the apps, back up your personal data (like sms, call logs, music, photos, videos stored in the internal memory) and then flash the stock ROM in Odin.
It is not necessary to wait for OTA. Once the latest firmware available at sammobile, download it and backup your apps with titanium backup and flash the firmware with odin. Later just reroot and restore your apps using titanium backup.

i even did use Triangle away 2.10 but now unfortunately it seems it isn't able to reset counter in JB 4.1.1 as it did succeed before with ICS 4.0.4
What the heck to do now?

The root is there...my Titanium Backup is reporting that it can acquire root. The only problem is with the broken OTA functionality.
Did you stop and think you have the latest OTA, what's the point of downloading and flashing the same update every time you check...
Beside, you use ODIN to flash the latest update, whats the point of using the OTA function if every time it flashes an OTA you need to go and reflash cf-root...
Personally I use mobile ODIN after flashing and rooting so I don't need to keep re-installing root...

Thanks for the reply. This is more a workarround than a fix to the initial problem. I would like to use OTA even with a rooted phone.
Root fix?
Any further ideas on how to root the S3 on the ROM: I9300XXDLIH?
I have tried CF Root 6.4 using Odin 3.04 and 1.85, still no problems.
I'm not sure about the unchecking auto reboot when flashing the CF-Root 6.4 and then booting into recovery to prompt an install? I've booted into recovery but not sure about how to prompt it into an install?
I like the new 4.1.1 ROM, but disappointed my apps aren't running correctly because the phone's not rooted?

well that's somehow half true in our case
..and why i say that
when i had ICS 4.0.4 following the advices from xda i did succeed properly the following:
1. Achieve fast & safe root
2. Preserving the capacity of my device to get OTA updates
(3. TriangleAway did work as a charm- did reset flawless the counter)
as a summary of the above said all was superb
now - with stock 4.1.1 with root performed ( in the same manner) i get a superb msg: "device modified"
and TriangleAway doesn't reset at all the counter anymore
i must say i did follow the others advice and did - using ODIN Mobile- revert to stock ICS 4.0.4 and then flashed Stock rom vodafone 4.1.1 to try to avoid loosing root and to be able to get some OTA updates
it seems that at this point i did fail somewhere when i used TitaniumBackup in restoring some apps:
1. this one asked me if to revert to the old Mac Address- and i accepted in order that google apps keep recognizing the device - did this wreck up the clean status of my just flashed phone?
2. or did i wreck up the phone's status by restoring from a backup ( i think i did a restore from a backup that included system backup too) - in this case before flashing- i should do backup only for the apps- without any system backup?

[Q] Updating GT-I9500 From rooted Stock Rom to newer firmware ??

Guys I have a Samsung S4 GT-I9500 version running on XXUAMDK the official stock ROM. Rooted using the Adam's Kernel method with TWRP recovery.
Now I have to update it to the newer version XXUBMEA which cannot obviously be done by OTA or Kies
So my question is that if i use Odin and follow the normal procedure to flash the ROM
1. Would it brick my phone?
2. Would the phone be still rooted.?
3. Will it wipe out all my applications installed later?
If the phone will not have the root. What steps could i possibly perform to root it again
U see i dont wanna take risks on such a costly phone.
Please any experienced help would greatly be appreciated

You should make a backup of your installed applications using Titanium Backup. You will then need to Odin back to the original Firmware because you said you can't get OTA updates for some reason. This will cause a loss in root. It will also wipe all your data and programs off the device. If done correctly you will not brick your phone. Make sure the file is in the PDA slot. You can root the phone again by going here. Once everything is setup you can use Titanium Backup to restore all your applications. Then make sure to use TriangleAway to reset your flash counter.
