Los Angeles 4g - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

So's I just got off the phone w/sprint tech support and they confirmed that the 4g towers in LA are up and running. I have yet to see my 4g symbol light up. Is anyone else in my parts (downtown LA) getting a 4g signal? I could be wrong but I thought this wasn't supposed to happen till the end of september.

By on they just mean they aren't blocking your access to them.. You probably still have to go on a hunt to find it though. It will be very spotty.
Thats how it was in KC at least. I've got it at my house, and its at my parents house now. But a mile from Sprint headquarters, nothing, and the worst 3g imaginable. It's astonishing.

I had 4g on the OG EVO, but 4g LTE not up yet, I work in Downtown LA so no LTE yet.

There's a Site dedicated to the 4g rollout I haven't seen any reports in LA yet.

Thanks for the intel tall. I called sprint due to my lousy signal I have while around the armpit of dwntwn LA. Tech informed me that there's a couple of tickets open on two towers that apparently my phone uses. Since their is work being done on em she wasn't able to give me the green light on a signal booster. She did however inform me that said tickets should be closed by tomorrow and will call me wednesday morning to see if signal has improved. Not sure if this post interests anyone else but I will be more than happy to keep inquiring minds informed of any updates.
The U.S government wouldn't lie to us...would they?

I'm out in the SGV and 3G over the weekend just became really fast. Haven't noticed the LTE signal yet. I did notice my phone disconnects from the network when screen is off sometimes. Maybe it's something to do with the LTE testing

Yeah would love to be kept up to date on this lousy 3g in LA as of late. I figured they were doing something because it's really been terrible.

Passed thru la on my way to edwards afb this morning. No LTE. But 3g was awesome! Saw 2.5mbps down multiple times on the 5 thru all of la. But usually ended at 1.5+. Sure wish I could see these speeds at the office in Anaheim

I'm in Northridge (sfv) and haven't noticed any 3g increase or 4g at all. Hoping soon tho!

i live in los angeles county, San Pedro, and i do not receive 4g at all. With my old HTC EVO (og) i use to get 4g while at work in Long Beach but now i dont even get that with the evo 4g lte. I called sprint about a week ago because at my home i noticed my service dropped tremendously from 4 bars to 0-1 bar and they sent me a signal booster for my house, but this is a ****ty fix they have. It only boost signal at home not the rest of town where i seem to have no service! I hate paying the extra 10$ a month for a service the dont even provide yet.

Well you have to understand two things.....
1) Your old evo was using the 4g wimax technology. This new one is using the 4g lte technology which hasnt rolled out to LA yet. Hence why you don't have "4g" on the new phone.
2) The signal booster you got was a Airave mini cell tower. That will only boost your cell coverage in your home, but not anywhere else. The no service....is that no 4g service or no cell service. If its no cell then call sprint, because that shouldn't be happening

yeah i know about the airwave only doing service at the house. But i hate that this is their fix for this.

I'm near West Hollywood. I noticed a huge decrease in signal quality over my EVO og when I got this phone. Dropped calls too. It's reminding me of when I used to be with AT& T.
I travel to Glendale a lot. I'm rooted and running the original Rom.
Supposedly Sprint said September for L.A. while I don't really expect it, if they don't have it going by the beginning of November, I'm going to be starting to calculate the feasibility of moving to Verizon.
I know it will be more expensive, and seemingly not as good a deal, but right now Sprint is selling promises. I can't check traffic on promises.
Soon 2 gigs a month will look much better than 400 megs of unlimited. It will be a decision between unlimited drops vs. Limited buckets.
A big part of the reason I'm beginning to loose patience is their decision to start LTE in places like dumb bucket Tennessee, over L.A., San Francisco, etc.

I'm sure they meant 4g wimax. Some Sprint csr or even tech support for the other know what lte is or they will tell you have 4g but they don't tell you it's wimax.
When I bought my SGS3 I was told that I had 4g in my area and that I could use it with the sgs3....But I only have wimax in my area....

Sprint compared to at&t

So was at the mall yesterday with a friend, she has an inspire on at&t i went to download a new game on my phone from the market the game was 20mb i was downloading it for like 20 mins and she downloaded it in like 2mins i was like wtf... Why is the sprint network so so slow? I was doing speed tests with almost full signal and was getting like 70kb
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
At&t has the fastest network, but they charge crazy amounts for overages.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Coverage differ eveywhere, speed is affect by tower load and backhaul, more users per tower, slower you get, so probably the sprint tower was serving more customer than ATT?
ATT 3G (which is also their psuedo 4G) is faster than sprint's 3G base on the technology, HSDPA vs CMDA/EVDO
i bet you weren't using the 4G right? if you can get a decent 4G signal then the speed should be comparable, but being inside a mall, unless the mall is right next to the tower.... hard to get a decent signal

VZW 4G is fastest, even faster than ATT HSDPA
I thought I saw Verizon scoring the highest.. but you maybe right.
I wasnt on 4g just 3g, me and her both were outside the mall when downloading, so ur saying her 3g is actually 4g?
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
From what I understand ATT has the fastest speed if and when you can get a slot on the tower--they are much better at this part than they were a year ago.
Verizon has middle of the road speed and expansive coverage.
Sprint has decent enough coverage and good roaming agreements, not over-saturated towers and WAS considerably faster than Verizon--until the EVO4G came out last year. I could actually notice my speeds dropping from day to day. They bottomed out 4 or 5 months ago and are stuck where they are...
Keep in mind this also changes based on time of day and population density and your data speed will be proportionate to your signal strength for the most part. If your buddy with ATT had full bars and you had almost none it doesn't matter whose phone or network is the fastest. Though I hear CDMA and GSM handle this differently I'm not so sure about that.
Even though with only 1/4 bar on my NS4G I get 1.5mbps in my apartment...the E3D went back primarily cuz its radios sucked for stability and performance. Hell, on my E4G I traded in yesterday I got 2.1mbps with 3/6 bars. The E3D couldn't touch that.

You likely weren't even on 3g, probably down to 1x, stock software wont show the difference though. Sprint's network blows in most places but I have faith that it'll get better.
I say stick with Sprint, they are adopting new technologies quicker than verizon and at&t. But speaking of 3g speed, at&t has the fastest but spotty coverage, then comes verizon with fast speed, excellent coverage, and t-mobile and sprint tied for third with ok speed and coverage. But I hear t-mobile's 3g speeds have been getting better with their introduction of 4g.
All in all, hopefully by 2012, sprint's standard 3g speeds will be better

for NOW, what AT&T call is 4G is actually faster version of their 3G tech same as Tmobile, which is HSPA+, AT&T won't BEGIN roll out their actual 4G LTE network until LATE this year.
Notice 4G LTE is the Tech Verizon have ALREADY deployed.
Early test with the not yet congested VZW 4G LTE show ACTUAL speeds download AND UPLOAD upward of 20mbps
AT&T's HSPA+ is MAX 14mbps, most day to day use see speed between 3-10mbps.
Tmo's HSPA+ is MAX 42mbps, most day to day use see speed about 10mbps.
Sprint and VZW's 3G is EVDO, that MAX out in day to day use about 2mbps, VZW on average is faster than Sprint, maybe about 200kbps-300kbps difference.
Sprint's 4G is WiMax, fastest i've seen is about 12mbps, usually more like 3-6mbps. so to have a chance to catch your friend's AT&T's speed, you need to have 4G on.
drawback of 4G Wimax and LTE... current generation chips suck battery juice super quick, our EVO 3D can be drain in 3-5hours of 4G usage
Pro of 4G Wimax and LTE, alot more spectrum/frequency efficient on the carrier's side, they can have more capacity in the same spectrum. Note that this is a mostly a Pro for the carrier and mostly a NULL factor to end users.
vice versa a CON of ATT/Tmo HSPA+ 3G/Psuedo 4G... they need more spectrum/frequency to acheive same capacity as 4G Wimax/LTE
Just the point that the signal with my 3d really sucks where ever i go, i dont know if its a hardware issue or a software issue, i dont wanna be stuck with a phone that gets horrible signal all the time, so should i take it back or keep it and hoping an update fixes the radios?

I'm with ya man. I did both. If this gets fixed (and we get unlocked) I'll be back. But until then I'm rocking a NexusS4G with a crappy Samsung radio that is somehow more reliable than the 3D's radio--just sayin'.
It has everything to do with where you are. I am in Miami/South Miami/Coconut Grove, FL and Sprint dominates ATT and Verizon. The blackberry bold I have on Verizon from work is essentially worthless in a shocking amount of popular/urban places. The Droid X I had before the bb was equally as bad. It is so bad I have to shell out my own money for a sprint phone to get decent service.
I always figured Verizon had blanket coverage everywhere since they market it so well but their coverage where I am is really poor. Of course if you call them, they act shocked and reference their map that shows dense coverage.

I don't know what's up with this phones reception or data speeds. It Sux! I mean for phone reception, I get 2 less bars everywhere I go and for data I'm getting barley .5 mb when used to always get about .9 with og EVO.
Besides these issues the phone is top notch. I'm still have a couple of weeks to take it back, but I really don't want to. Hopefully these issues can be worked out soon.

Any word in sprint coverage?

Anybody here have any information regarding why sprints coverage has started to really suck in some areas? I've heard people talked about towers going down or what not and speeds decreasing. Is sprint planning on enhancing their coverage with lte but leave 3g in the dust or are they planning to upgrade everything over the next 5 years or so while they roll out their lte?
Anybody from sprint on here with any solid information?

We upgraded our phones awhile back (live in the Greenville, SC area) all the phones were 4g however our area doesn't have 4g yet. We have to pay the additional $10 per phone (3) for 4g access. Sprint guy assured us our area would have it soon. After months of paying an additional $30 finally got aggravated enough to call them to see what was up with it. Sprint rep informed us that 4g service isn't coming to our area anytime soon!
What happened? Does anyone know what's going on with Sprint rolling out 4g towers?
They are abandoning Wimax and going with lte.

Sprint has stopped WiMax roll out completely, if you don't have it, you ain't gettin it.
They are currently rolling out LTE - how long ago did you get these phones? They have known that WiMax Roll Out stopped months ago.
Also, your $10 isn't for 4G, its for "Premium Data Services" and all smart phones, with the exception of the Samsung Replenish and one other device now have this extra charge regardless of 4G access. It is true that the charge started with the EVO and Epic that are 4G devices and 4G was the initial cause of the charge, but it has now rolled to all new contract smart devices.
The LG Optimus S is 3G, and also gets the $10 charge, so yeah, its not for 4G access.
its because so many people were rooting nd using tethering apps instead of paying extra

Possibly moving to Sprint in the near future

Basically my company is changing the way they do phones and we now have to get out own phone plan which they will reimburse us for. I'm currently on AT&T with the HOX and the only other phone I would consider is the EVO 4G LTE. Actually I would prefer to have the EVO to be honest but I'm mainly worried about data speeds. I'm in Atlanta and the LTE speeds on AT&T here are absolutely insane, average around 35-40Mbps down on speedtest, and they reach way outside of the actual city, which is a huge plus for me. I actually live about 50 miles north of the city and still get a strong LTE connection. I see that Atlanta is on the first wave of LTE roll-outs for Sprint but I'm worried about the 3G speeds I may have to be on a lot of the time. Can anyone in the metro Atlanta area comment on the 3G speeds around here? I don't know anyone on Sprint personally. The other plus for me switching to Sprint is the unlimited data. The AT&T company plan I'm on now has unlimited but that is going away and I'll have to start a completely new plan if I stay on AT&T.
Generally sprint 3g will be slower because we don't have hspa and most att does, sometimes sprint is faster but I haven't seen that since sprint list the Alltel towers

When I actually do switch from ATT LTE to HSPA/HSPA+ I still pull over 5Mbps down consistently, so I don't doubt that the 3G will be slower, just how much slower is the question. All the Sprint speed tests I see are always showing how bad it is but I don't know anyone in the Metro Atlanta area to give me actual results.

Try it out - Get an EVO LTE and return it within 14 days
I am pretty sure that right now you can get at EVO LTE directly from Sprint with free activation. With the return policy, you could return it for a full refund for the phone within 14 days and only pay the prorated service charge.
So I suggest you try it out and get a new / temporary phone number from Sprint and then return it. That will give you a true real world experience of using the phone and its service.
I am in the Philly area and am hoping to see LTE by the end of the year. The service is OK in the area, but horrible in my house. To deal with that I use Roam Control to force roaming (which uses Verizon's towers) while at my house -works like a charm!
Good luck.
Sprint has the best plans but by far the worst/slowest network. It's a trade off..

I'm in ATL, and I would say my 3G is good most of the time. I live and work just outside I-285, and I've always had good service. Is it the fastest, no. Have I been able to do everything I needed to do, pretty much yes. Now I do work in a Corp high rise, and its surrounded by two other high rise buildings, so the signal does fade in/out at times. Also, there is no using Sprint cell phones in the elevator based on my 10+ year experience with Sprint. When I travel around the city, I get good service (data/voice) and GPS reception. I only run into problems when I'm in or around large buildings. As far as call signal/quality, no issues. I get a few dropped calls, but those are in the same dead spots. I do have roaming on... Those dropped calls are few and far between.
I just came back from a 4 day trip to Chicago. Sprint phones have always held up well for me on vacations out of town. I never rent a GPS, as the phone does everything I need. I used the EVO LTE for car, public transportation, & walking navigation (GOOGLE NAV/MAPS by the way). It performed exceptionally... Like I said b/f, the signal may fade if you're around large buildings, but that didn't hinder my travels. FYI - the battery held up well. I used the camera, video, and GPS non-stop. I will have to say the camera has grown on me. That thing is quite impressive. The burst mode is a beast. Very impressive now that I know how to use it. I used to have a color saturation problem, but that's long gone. Guess the camera got better over time & me actually learning how to use helped too. My portable charger (Tylt Powerplant) I purchased from Sprint held up will and did a great job of keeping me juiced. I was out all day using the phone on Auto brightness. Sun glare/reflection didn't bother the EVO at all.
OP - Hope all this information helps.

[Q] Is anyone getting solid LTE connection?

Is anyone in the cities/communities that LTE went live in, connecting to the network and maintaining the connection? I am in San Antonio, and have only had LTE connect once and that was before the network went live. I checked the coverage map and it says it should connect but I am having no luck. I have read in other threads that people connect for a few seconds then go back to 3G service. I just wanted to see what everone else's mileage is. Thanks

I saw the 4g icon once about a month ago. And it was so sporadic I couldn't do anything with it.
Now that it's officially live in KC. Still haven't seen anything. Stuck on 3g and I'm about a mile and a half from the Sprint campus.
I was out of town last week and was hoping to come back to LTE. Sprint said the 15th, so I guess shouldn't expect much until the end of the month.
I am in DFW and where I live I get nothing.. not even a blip of 4G turning on. Where I work it turns on but it usually flips right back to 3G. I was able to hold it for about 15 mins at one point this morning but thats been it.
Unfortunately for me 3G coverage on my towers is god awful to the point im tempted to activate my OGEvo and use wimax till this is sorted.
I live 3 blocks from the sprint compound in KC and haven't seen a hair of LTE. Odd.
San Antonio, no service yet. Coverage map might be a prediction of complete service and not an actual "current serviceā€œ map

Went outside during lunch and did pick up 4g.
Ran a speedtest, 1.5 down, about the same up. Not real impressive. Although still better then the non-existent 3g as of late.
As soon as I walk back in the building it goes back to 3g.
I am in San Antonio as well, and no, it goes crazy 4G-3G-4G-3G etc etc but it does not maintain 4G... it switches back to 3G and stays there... if I force it to stay on 4G (##DATA#) it get good solid 4G speeds at one point 10down 8up... but it wont make or receive phone calls, if I reboot I get a "the process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly"
I seriously hope things improve in terms of the network. It would be a shame if all this NV stuff Sprint talked about was just hype.... I know LTE just went live but it should atleast be able to grab a decent connection. Let's just hope it can penetrate better and be more reliable than WiMAX....

I was able to get LTE in the 1604/I10 area Friday night but now its nowhere to be found. I spoke with a customer rep and they did say that it will be a work in progress as they are making some sort of adjustments to the towers and that when that happens they may be taken down to make the switch and the overload of traffic on other towers is causing it to not connect properly to the LTE servers. I would have thought that this transition would have been made before going live but apparently not. Hopefully over the next few days the network gain strength.
Odessa texas here, Nothin man, nada. What pisses me off is that we're paying for 4g service and we cannt even get it. like paying for a meal you cant eat, a car you cant drive, a hooker you cant,,,,ok thats too much, Anyways you know what im saying ,,,right?
Another person in SA with no 4G here. I carpooled this morning and saw nothing the whole way to work. (Bandera & 1604 across 151 and then to Culebra & 410 if we're mapping this). Went out for lunch and didn't get any signal either. Oh well, I guess we'll see how things look in a week or so.
I talked to a Sprint rep and they said they are still working to get the coverage shown on the map for LTE. I gave them a couple zip codes and they came back and said they should go live soon
Try getting a hold of a Sprint rep on chat/phone and give them your zip if you are supposed to be getting LTE according to the map.
Personally I am getting blazing speeds in the south but 0 LTE in the north. I am being patient
I'm not in San Antonio at the moment. Live in Los Angeles and well...I'll let my screenshot speak for it's self.

The 10$ is for any smartphone regardless of 4g or not. They changed that charge a long time ago. Its premium data now. Every company does this..no big deal.

Originally it was a WiMAX charge but then they figured out that they couldn't legally charge for their WiMAX unless it was actually up and running in their entire proposed network. They then said it was for all smartphones to get around it. Yes its not a big deal because sprint is still cheaper than the other carriers but they still don't have a completely functioning WiMAX/lte network. We all know its a 4g charge no matter what they call it

Dacula, GA here. Got a 4g signal about a month ago, but only for a short while. Now the coverage map says that I am covered, but I haven't gotten any signal. So like everyone is saying, the map is pretty inaccurate right now. Hopefully i'll get some connection by the end of this month.
This is the best I could do today in the Vinings GA (burbs of of ATL) area. 4G has been flashing since Mon for me. It lasts for less than 5 mins, but long enough for me to do a few speed tests. 4G also flashes at my home, but its very brief. What's crazy is today I was told about the Open Signal app, so I downloaded it. It's really helpful... What I didn't know was the tower I see near my job is a Sprint Tower. I also have another tower about a mile away. I saw today I caught 4G from both. Makes me wonder what's really up? The tower is right outside my office, so is the LTE signal that weak, or are there some kind of signal/antenna issues? Oh by the way, the Sprint Tower is also really close to where I live. It's about 0.2-0.3 miles away...

Data Speeds In The Los Angeles Area?

If anyone has a suggestion of a better area to post this question, please let me know.
I am currently with Sprint, using an HTC EVO 4G LTE. I stupidly purchased the phone by pre-order. It has taken almost a full year for LTE to become available in my area, and my average download speeds have been tested by the Speedtest.net app as between 3 to 6Mbps. 3G speeds aren't even worth mentioning.
I am hoping to find out what download speeds I should expect in the L.A. area with T-Mobile, not necessarily with the HTC One (although that's probably the phone I'd go for), but with T-Mobile's phones in general.
I'm thinking of switching to T-Mobiles $30 100 minute, 5Gb data plan, which I figure could save me at least $30/mo over what I'm paying now. I would have to pay about a $300 ETF, but I think I would break even after 10 months.
If I can expect at least 6Mbps down, even on HSPA+, I might go for it. I would also want to root so I can occasionally tether. I don't go crazy with tethering, I currently average less than one Gig of data per month, total.

I was on sprint, then went to tmobile, then now to sprint because I had a chance to save about $40 a month and get HTC one... Its been a day, I'm about to beg T-Mobile to take me back... Sprint is **** nationwide still, Sven after network vision....
More on Los Angeles. I was there 4 months ago, and spent couple of days in SF Bay area as well. I've always gotten about 3-19mbps when I tested, never had issues. Basically never felt like I was having any network issues. I don't live there though, so probably somebody else would know better.

LA is big so it probably depends on where you're at.
I get around 10-12 Mbps down on HSPA+ around Culver City, Westside.
My data speeds seem to have improved w/ the HTC One, I had a GSII before.
We should have LTE in the LA area by June as well if you believe all the leaks(I do).
It makes sense for Tmobile to get LTE running in this area asap.
I'm from the East LA (Whittier) area and between there and Orange County I've never had speed issues with the exception being Disneyland. T-Mobile really needs to work on their data speeds there. My speedests are consistently between 5MB-21MB on HSPA+ overall which is impressive. When we get LTE it's going to be even better which is pretty amazing. T-Mobile is going to have the fastest primary and secondary networks in the country, and for the best price. Lol, sorry if I sound like a T-Mobile salesman. I'm just gushing because of my love for the One.
Also, the San Francisco bay area isn't considered part of LA. It's so far north it could be considered another state.

I don't. Sprint was promising LTE in LA "In a couple of months" when I was deciding whether to get the EVO LTE. I had the original EVO with Wimax, and I consistently got around 6 down.
I had to wait nearly a year b4 LTE really started showing up on my phone. Now the two year life cycle of my phone is half over. And so far, their "LTE" is less than Wimax, at least where I usually go. And while I was waiting not only did their 3G speeds go down, I would often get "roaming" warnings in downtown LA!
So I'm not going to rely on any promises of something that does not yet exist. But it sounds like it's not unreasonable for me to expect speeds on HSPA that are similar to Sprints current LTE (in LA anyway). And voice and data at the same time.
As to the quote above, Sprint has concentrated on getting LTE in small, less populated areas like armpit, Ohio since the beginning. But they're the ones with all the college degrees, so they must know what they're doing!

I just made the switch from Sprint to Tmo. I also had the Evo LTE, and the og Evo before that. I have had the ONE for two weeks now and have been very impressed with Tmobile's speeds in and around L.A. Even when the Evo picked up LTE, hspa+ was still faster 90 percent of the time.
Trust me, ditch Sprint and don't look back...

yeap. i was on the evo4gLTE before this and i just bought the HTC one last month, and swapped to tmobile. I'm out here in the greater OC but sometimes go up to LA. Before on the evoLTE when i went up to LA depending on where i was i could get some 4g and the speeds were fast but for the most part i was stuck on EVDO which was so slow it was like a tragedy. Sprint is set to roll out 4g in LA county very soon but the problem is that the initial blanket coverage will still only be like 50% done. it'll take them up to jan2014 to blanket all of LA county. (westside- UCLA and east side - up rowland heights) in the greater OC its going to be even longer. i live near the JWA airport and i can get 4g along the 405 and south coast plaza but other than that i'm SOL for 4g and 3g here is just bad.
After i swapped to TMO i have essentially HSDPA everywhere and in about 50-60% i have HSPAP(HSDPA+) speeds are very consistant at 5mbps+. with speeds sometimes reaching 10-15mbps. so far i'm pretty happy with the availability of bandwidth here in OC not sure about LA though. i've only been out there once since getting the phone. Though i didnt notice any hickups in speed that time either.
You shoulda canceled your sprint line last month when you coulda got out of it for free. I had a year left on contract with sprint and i got out ETF free and thats why i moved to TMO.

No, I got mine as soon as it came out, so I'm only half way through my contact.
I think I can still come out ahead with TMobile though, even after paying an ETF.
How did you get out without paying a fee? Did you roam your way out?
Btw, I just measured 207 kbps down in Glendale, CA. Awesome.

na not sure if you browsed the general section of the EVO4gLTE section but they had a thing where sprint changed some of their contract wording. so i ended up getting out ETF free since i just told them i didnt agree to the changes they were making. Not sure if you still can do it now cause they sent out the changes in late march and said you had up to a month to reply. there was a huge slickdeals thread about it showing people how to do it and call Customer care.
Heard abut that, but also some people said they tried but Sprint wouldn't budge. Hadn't heard about the Slickdeals thing though.
Anyway, I was busy trying to get my EVO 4G fixed, hoping that would satisfy me. Plus I don't think TMo had gone contractless yet.

I work at the T-Mobile near USC down the street from the Staples Center. I get roughly 15+ mbps download and 1 mbps upload on HSPA+. Pretty solid data speeds in most of LA. I have yet to really run into anywhere that data speeds absolutely sucks however there are certain stores that seem to be harder to get data connection like some Walmarts or Targets. Probably has something to do with how thick their ceilings and walls are.

Sounds pretty nice. 15 down on HSPA+ and I'm getting 3 down on LTE.
They market terms like LTE and 4G which actually don't seem to mean anything. Kind of like printing "New Formula" on a bottle of Tide.
