How to completely wipe? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I've been having alot of issues, lag, freezes, reboots, and ive been having these issues on a few different roms ive tried. I had Been running the paranoid android one from Jamied81 and it worked great but then i switched around and on any rom including the PA one, and other cm10 roms, im having the same issues, So There must be something wrong with my phone... i guess?
How can i completely wipe clean and start fresh? because ive been wiping data, cache and dalvik cache but thats not helping...
Of course i could go back to best buy and cash in on my warranty.. but i really dont want to do that...
thanks

Well,
It depends on the level you want to take the "cleaning" too...
Data, cache, dalvik cache, and stats are a normal cleaning, and used by most folks to get an average clean.
Some roms even state to do this 3 times or more to be sure.
Two additional steps are needed to get the device "clean". and it involves moving everything off of the device to PC storage, and wiping the following two areas.
( by everything, I mean "anything" you want to keep. pictures etc.)
First, the SD card. As the device uses this memory location for cache of files, and bits of user data, it can be a source of misery when bouncing between roms. so a complete format to FAT32 on the PC will wipe this card clean.
Second, and my personal favorite, is wiping of the internal card space, or the EMMC partition.
This is performed through the recovery, under the advanced options menu, in the format sub-section.
Effectively, wiping the emmc "will" remove all rom data from the device, above the normal data wipe level, and leaves the device empty.
Note: the new rom will re-populate the needed files to run the rom upon the first boot cycle.
IMPORTANT !!!
If moving files back to your device from PC, you must ensure that they are clean too. It is very easy to forget that many files contain rom specific data, and should be avoided as a restore function, especially APK's....
The partitions from the last rom will remain in place, but they will be overwritten by using odin to restore the device. ( if you wish to restore the factory rom architecture )
If odin or kies are not used, the rom partitions remain, but are empty anyway.
"WARNING" !!!!
Although this method is considered safe, you "will lose "any" data or files left behind on the internal space of the device, or on your External SD card by formatting.
And you must place a new rom to your External card prior to placing the card back into the phone, and use CWM or TWRP recovery to flash a new rom in recovery mode. (unless odin or kies are used to return a device to stock condition)
Note: (no pun intended)
This method will "not" touch your recovery, Unless using odin or kies to push a non-rooted rom to the device, and the user must choose carefully when selecting any firmware image to flash.
It is up to the user to restore the factory partitions by flashing a stock odin rom, unless the last rom was a "stock" rom. (Note: kies may be used as well, but Odin is the most common, and works well )...
The standard recovery flash can be used, and is advised if you want to retain root...!!!!
"WARNING" !!!... THE USE OF ODIN OR KIES TO FLASH A STOCK FIRMWARE IMAGE WILL REMOVE YOUR ROOT, AND RECOVERY, FORCING THE DEVICE BACK TO A STOCK STATE....( choose carefully as you select any image to flash using Odin or Kies, as these roms are likely "NOT" rooted roms, and will jam you up)...
I hope this helps you.
Please ask if you have any questions, "before" attempting this procedure... PM included.
And could the Mods please move this thread to QA ? Thank you.....g

Wow.... first of all, thanks for the very detailed reply.
So i format the card separately, format the emmc in recovery, and install a new rom? do i need to deal with the other partitions? or will the new rom just take care of that?

Another easy way...go to this site: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25980-sgh-i717ucle2-official-leak/, follow the instructions, bam. Basically just throw into DL mode and hit start, its one of the one click Odin ICS leaks from designgears and it completely wipes everything on your phone.
I have run into similar sounding problems as yours where my phone won't wipe properly in cwm, and I've used this to completely nuke my internal storage and start over.
Of course, transfer all pictures, music, and important files to your computer first. Then after you use the one click Odin, just begin romming as usual

While i've seen and like the rootzwiki method, I prefer to manually wipe and install roms.
For me, it adds back in, that level of control I like to have when changing roms etc.
I'm the " do it myself " kinda user ...but I agree, it's a good system.
Thank you for posting it ....g

Yeah, I prefer the manual way in cwm as well, but I've run into an error a couple of times where it won't wipe properly. So I nuke my phone to fix the ability to wipe. There's no way I would do that every time I flash a ROM.

True ....and of course, my post was meant in the context of a device having severe problems.
I seldom use that method either, but in a pinch it's good to have available ......and if users see and retain either of the methods we've posted, they can repair virtually any problem going forward.
And hopefully avoid those JTAG moments we all dread ....g

That's for sure. Haha.

Thanks for the reply. But, i dont see any instructions... what do i do with the file?

Basically its a one click version of Odin with the files already loaded into it so you don't have to pick anything.
Download it to your comp, unzip the file (I believe?), open the program, put your phone into download mode, connect it to your comp, make sure Odin recognizes it, then click start.
Takes a bit because its a huge process that it's undertaking, but at times its necessary to go nuclear on your phone.
Really should only be used as a last resort to wiping your phone.

[Q] Ghost of ROMs past haunts my Vibrant

I've been stuck in a weird place for some time with my phone. After I installed clockwork mod, backed up, installed some flavour of FroYo, and made the mistake of trying to flash back my old back up without properly wiping things have been getting weird. I can use ODIN to flash fresh ROMs, but I always get a bunch of FCs at startup, and most apps don't work. I tried to do all kinds of tricks to completely wipe the internal SD, but there is always some remnants of old fun hanging about causing cascading errors and FCs. No matter what I try to do, MyBackupPro and Rommanager is always present, but not working.
How I can completely rid myself of anything not stock ROM?
I've finally gotten back to root ADB, after a long and hard battle. I believe this may hold the key to salvation for my Vibrant.
Any and all suggestions are much appreciated!
Things I've already tried:
EUGENE373_SamsungS_Froyo_PDA -> Stock 2.1 T959UVJFD
EUGENE373_SamsungS_Froyo_PDA -> battery pull -> Stock 2.1 T959UVJFD
Stock 2.1 T959UVJFD -> EUGENE373_SamsungS_Froyo_PDA
Bionix1.9.zip - would not install due to some error I can't recall right now. Will update.
Factory wipe - from Settings menu
Wipe in Clockworkmod menu
Wipe all in adb shell
The weird *2767*3855#* factory wipe
UPDATE:
Strangest thing happened: I flashed an old ROM back onto the phone with Odin 1.52, then the Updated Stock 2.1 also via Odin the usual FC-ing was still there. Then I rebooted into recovery, reinstalled the Clockworkmod recovery menu, installed the root-update.zip in order to have root shell access. Then I pushed VibrantDeodexed1_2.zip and Vibrantfroyo_R3.zip on to the sd card. I tried to apply the VibrantDeodexed1_2.zip, but it aborted due to some catalog not present. However, I did notice that the installation erased /system and deleted some files, and I had the notion to try and install the VibrantFroyo_R3.zip. The installation succeeded, and Lo and Behold!
the phone has returned to the land of the living! Wohoo!!
I do not fully understand how this can be, but there is no Force Closing of programs any longer. What a relief!
Thanks to everybody who contributed ideas!
If you're having problems, back up whatever data you want to keep to your computer. Go download eugenes 2.2 that doesn't brick. Flash that, do a battery pull once it's done (don't reboot). Then go get a stock eclair file, flash that with odin and check repartition. This solved every problem I had from flashing way too many roms.
Yea, when in doubt I thank the deities for Eugene and flash his "Froyo that doesn't brick" followed by the stock JFD firmware.

Yeah, that's the weird part.. It doesn't really delete anything. Files are still there, and so are the un-wanted system files, too.
Does anyone know if I can manually partition the sdcard?
Had a similar issue, and couldn't fully erase my files. Figured out how to completely erase everything, before you proceed, backup your files and be ready to Odin. In rom manager, enable advanced mode in settings, then use the flash alternate recovery option. That set my current cwm version to 2.5.1.2, now when I reboot to cwm i have a menu that says something similar to "sd and storage" and within that menu are options to completely format all of the internal storage. Be careful in there, you can delete everything, incl the sd ext, but I think this is what you are looking for.
Edited - I rebooted and checked the menus, mounts and storage in cwm is what you are looking for after flashing the alternate recovery, I can confirm this removes remnants that an Odin repartition or factory format still leaves behind, let me reiterate, backup your personal files, cause this does remove everything
After formatting, Odin away

When I boot into recovery, I always have to reinstall packages to get to the CWM recovery menu. I tried to clear everything from the mounts and storage submenu; I cleared system, cache and data, then flashed stock eclair. STILL the same applications and files sit on the internal SD.
When performing the wiping, all looks normal. It does take a little time, and the system reports that all is going according to plan, yet no files are deleted.
What can possibly make the phone act this way? Are there no super secret samsung-technician codes that allow me to completely wipe clean the face of the sdcard?
When you get into the storage and mounts menu, I would format everything given what you're experiencing. Format boot, data, system, cache, and sdcard. Dont format the sd ext, thats the physical card. After formatting all of those your phone should be an odin ready blank slate, mine was. Hope this helps.

I was hoping that would help you friend, that process wiped mine clean of all remnants. Good luck in getting her back into a functional state.
After reading som more, contacting Samsung Service, I've decided to send the phone in for service. [sigh]
I've learnt a lot about ADB, pushing and pulling files, rooting, unrooting, swapping ROMS and whatnot. Still, the phone is stuck in that weird place where I cannot delete files.
Hopefully the service team can fix this poor, misguided phone

[Q] Total Wipe: How?

I have a phone that is behaving very strangely after a boot loop that solved itself when I took the battery out mid-boot. The triangle has disappeared, although I did nothing to make this happen, and the OS is behaving strangely despite doing a full factory reset. Running VillainROM 2.0.
I would like to do a full rewipe of all software, right down to the bare metal. What's the procedure for doing this? I've done a factory reset from CWM but I'd like to do a wipe from the lowest level possible, akin to a formatting of the HDD on a PC. How would I go about this? Would using ODIN to flash a stock ROM achieve this?

It will do a factory reset on your phone, basically removes most crap and you end up with a nice clean phone.
If you are rooted you will not lose it but it does delete the stuff on your sdcard (internal storage) so do backup.

What i Used to do on my old SGS when i wanted a "full wipe" was :
- hard reset via *2767*3855# (given by JJEgan )
-Flash with Odin WITH pit file ( so you have to find one )
OR
If you are rooted and have access to CWM , going to "mount and storage" and use the options to format each partition works too( except probably "format /emmc", wasn't existing on the old SGS so not sure what happens if you format this one).
And then, as before, flash with Odin, with pit file.
With either way, you are guaranted to have a total "clean phone".
You can also format internal and external SDCards beforehand(especially Internal SD, since some Apps store part of their parameters on Internal SD (Like Zedge, Go Launcher and such...) , but that's a little overkill i think

I have seen that number quoted a few times on forums without much explanation and its a one way street.
The good thing is that now you have a nice clean phone, you shoulnt have lost you root (if you were) and will have fun installing and configuring your apps.
Its a little bit noty, like when linux gurus tell noobs to try rm -fr /.

Format Internal memory

Hi everyone
Right before finally updating to JB, I would like to delete EVERYTHING from the internal memory.
I have too many folders that came with apps that I deleted months ago, but I don't know which are those and which are suppose to be there.
How can I delete EVERYTHING before flashing the new JB?
Thank you

not from laziness, I guess I'm not sure what to search for, can you please refer me to such post?
So it didn't occur to you to do a factory reset in the first instance ? (And if it did, you didn't mention it in your OP; we're not mindreaders. We only know about your situation what you tell us).

All right...
I did factory reset in the past and it did not delete all folders.
When I emphasized EVERYTHING, I thought I made it clear that I want everything gone.
anyway... I already installed JB and it didn't erase anything of course.
I would be thankful if anyone could at least tell me where I can find a list of folders that come with the phone, so I won't delete important folders.
If your phone is rooted/has CWM, boot into CWRecovery & format cache, data, system, & internal sd card. Be warned, once you do this, you will need to flash a stock rom via Odin after. In the event Odin does not play nice with your phone, search. It's almost always something really obvious stopping it from working (I won't be answering any posts from you saying 'Help ! Odin doesn't work').
From there you'll have a 'clean' setup to flash whatever you want on.
Do not 'find a list of folders' and start deleting stuff from your existing setup; there's a fair chance you'll end up deleting something important & bork it.

Flash custom kernel like Siyah via CWM or ODIN.
Reboot into recovery.
Flash kernel cleaning script.
Format internalsd card (or /emmc)
Format external if needed.
Now flash custom rom via recovery or reboot into download mode and flash rom via ODIN. (As mentioned above do not ask how, plenty of info on this).

1. You can just wipe stock slot and install CM on it. You have to do it fresh and not restore a backup from another slot.
2. Why do you need to edit your build.prop?

1. No, stock slot, is stock slot... all of that is predetermined space of the partition... If you have titanium backup Pro and a custom launcher... all you will really lose is time. Make sure you are saving to ext. sd just to be safe, backup your user apps, backup again for modified data, and you are fine. For the custom launcher, save your setup. After you flash over, restore. Depending on what/how much you have it could take a couple hours... some games that require extra data, you will still have to download it but, your progress should still be there. Double check if it is a game, as some of them only save via a cloud.
2. I may be ignorant to your particular situation/apps, but, if your previous device was a an android device, and you saved your contacts to your google I.D. they should be waiting for you, when you reactivate from the wipe/flash. When I got my first droid years ago, I was coming from a crappy flip phone from att, they were able to flash my conacts from the att sim over to my new droid. All my contacts are now saved via google.. so it doesn't matter what phone I boot up.. my contacts are waiting for me.
If I helped you, hit the thanks!

Ok, I know what I'll be doing this weekend. Thanks!
EDIT:
Will everything will work out if I install CM on the stock, and then delete ROM-Slot1?

Keep slot 1 and it's backup til you have the stock slot the way you want it. That way, if you forgot something, you still have what you need til you figure out what you missed and it isn't gone for good.
When you do your wipes DO NOT TOUCH internal storage and micro SDcard... that is all your personal data.. there is where your backups are... you wipe them your screwed.. pictures.. music, all of it is gone, and no one can help you!

I've done what you've said, booted on to the stock ROM, and it's been on the CM boot screen for an hour, I still have the CM installed on stock ROM 1, what would've caused this problem?

Lol.. now you know why you wanted to keep slot 1. Either the stock ROM didn't get fully wiped, the CM11 didn't install properly, or it was a bad download.
So. Just a recap, you are using safestrap 3.65 or higher. When you did your wipe, did you just factory reset, or did you go into advanced wipe and wiped Dalvik cache, android secure, data, cache, and system? The CM thread recommends advanced wipe, and doing it three times!

OK, I am gonna just start from the absolute beginning again:
I am flashing the Razr back to factory default with RSD Lite... Complete
Booting into the stock Android installation... Complete
Rooting device with RazrBlade... Complete
Installing Safestrap V3.65... Complete
Rebooting into Safestrap recovery... Complete
Wiping ROM Slot 1 3 times, wiping the same as 2 steps below... Complete
ADB Push CM onto /sdcard/
Install and configure CM on ROM Slot 1 as a fallback...Complete
Advanced wipe Stock slot 3 times, wiping the Dalvik cache, Android secure, data, cache, and system, this is where I messed up... Complete
Install and configure CM on Stock slot...Complete
Delete ROM Slot 1... I'll delete it once I have the Stock ROM fully finished.
It works, thanks for dealing with my stupidity

Not stupidity. Ignorance (for lack of a better word... look up the true meaning if you are taking offense.)
And just so you know, you probably went through a few extra more steps than you needed too. Stock wasn't damaged, just needed to be thoroughly wiped then reinstalled. Also if you had a backup of Slot one, after you did the firmware reflash with RSD then root and recovery, you could have just restored your slot 1 backup.. same thing, less time. Just a couple of tips.
It is certainly good that you aren't afraid to just reflash a fresh firmware though, that can solve a lot more problems than you think. Hone your searching skills, and you are golden

[Q] So, Cyanogenmod installation on Nexus 5

Basically I have very vague idea of what to do. So far, I have backed up my Apps data using Titanium backup and put that backup folder on my PC. I googled around a bit, but the instruction that I found required me to have a SD card reader to backup my things (apps and ROM). So is there any way around that? Also, when wiping my phone to prepare for flashing Cyanogenmod, what type of data do I wipe? (cache, Dalvik, etc.)
Oh, I already downloaded the snapshot version for Nexus 5 and the gapp already. So far all I know is: Backup -> Wipe (which data?) -> flash ROM -> flash gapp -> done. Am I missing something else?
bump...
Obviously you must be rooted to use Titanium Backup, but do you also have the bootloader unlocked and custom recovery? If so, you can just put the rom zip and gapps zip on the internal storage, boot to recovery, perform a backup (called a nandroid) and then factory data reset and install rom zip and gapps. Reboot and enjoy. Your internal storage will not need to be wiped unless you have not unlocked your bootloader. At that point, just make sure you drag everything off the internal storage to the PC, then unlock the bootloader, install the custom recovery, and wipe and install.

So all I have to do now is flash the .zip files and not worry about my data? I am rooted and the bootloader is unlock, I just thought that flashing a new ROM would wipe the phone out (Nexus 5 only have one internal storage)
Depends on which data we're referring to. You will need to perform a factory reset which will wipe your phone as far as the accounts, passwords, settings, call log, texts, apps, contacts, etc. But the recoveries are made to skip wipe /data/media which is the internal storage or what the system considers your /sdcard/. Thus not needing to worry about your pics, music, backups, etc. However, it's always good practice to do a back up of anything super important before attempting any major modification to the system to a safe place. In case of emergency, I recommend having the stock img files to restore the phone to stock. This will save time in getting the phone working again should something go wrong. Never fear though, it's very hard to hard brick the Nexus.

Ok, I'm backing the phone up right now (barely made it within the available SD space). So next is wiping the phone, correct? Then I assume after that I can flashing the files. Next is... I have no idea...
K, so next is rebooting to recovery and going to Backup and backing up the rom you're on. Then it might be good to back that up too. After that, go to recovery and perform the factory data reset and then install rom, then gapps, and reboot. It'll take a while longer to reboot than usual. After that you'll be presented with the setup wizard that'll walk you through getting the phone ready again.

Wait, you do or don't have a custom recovery? Because that is needed. I recommend TWRP, but Philz is good as well. But really any of the newest ones will do what you need, just slightly different features and UIs.

Ok, few more dumb questions. After I back the phone up, where does the backup go? If it is the backup of the current ROM, should I transfer it to somewhere safe (like a PC) before I do a factory reset? Sorry, I'm just having a bad anxiety about all of this flashing and wiping and ROMing...
The backup is stored on your /sdcard/ but yes, I was recommending to also copy that to the computer for safe keeping.
