The most important button in SGS2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I guess I overestimated how important Home button is in SGS2. I actually think now it was the biggest mistake of Samsung to make a physical button (isn't it also made Apple mad since it looks like a button from Iphone and that is why they are dragging them in courts). Anyway my Home button died unexpectedly. First I decided that I will survive but turns out that without this button my SGS2 can barely be used. Plus also to send it by warranty I need to wait now for the JIG in order to restore complete to factory since can not go to Download mode. Sorry if this is useless thread - just want to steam my sadnessr somewhere. Not I am really jealous for our friends from SkyRocket community since they don't have any hardware buttons in the same place - which makes SGS2 much better device then original. I guess I got a bit upset and even started to think about SGS3 upgrade however it also has this hardware button so potentially also can brake. Anyway if you have any thoughts just post them.

What caused the unexpected demise of the home button?

I think it is my daughter I think she pressed it too hard when she plays games on the phone. I know it is ridiculous answer but it is true.

It is not ROM related. I tested buttons in CWM and Home button doesn't respond at all. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for suggestion. However I need to wipe the flash count anyway - so I need a JIG. I know that I could have done through Chainfire remove the Triangale app but in the end it looks like JIG is better and cheaper solution. But thank you again for ideas.

triangle app is way better option especially if you have a new bootloader.
If you have new bootloader, jig will not even reset anything

Yes you need to flash old gingerbread bootloader to rest flash counter with jig. Triangle Away is free for XDA users.

Thanks you for help. I didn't know that you have to go back to old bootloader. I also didn't know that it was free for XDA users. Well I wanted to donate Chainfire long time anyway. All I need now is to put back stock ICS and I will send the device.

[Q] cannot get "download mode" or recovery

hey guys,
i bought a secondhand galaxy s II yesterday. when i first got it, it had MIUI on it.
i personally hate this so i went to flashing straight away. first a lot of research on the differences with Desire HD and Hero but when i had enough confidence the party could start!
what i did is try to flash exynos 7.0 through CWM 4.0. this didn't work because the volume keys don't work!! so eventually i flashed it using ROM manager and this worked it finally started flashing! but now i forgot to flash exynos 3.5 base system file first and went straight to exynos v7.0.zip
and now i'm stuck in bootloop but can't get in to download mode... because of the volume keys.
is there anything known about disabling volume keys or that people disconnect them because they press them all the time.
or is there a software way of forcing it into download mode (I am aware of the JIG way but looks to sketchy to me right now and i don't know if it works for S II!)
many thanks

have you tried odin?
I'm not an expert, but it seems to me you need repair the volume keys... I can't imagen there being a option to disable the volume keys on your phone.

no there isnt...best thing is to take it back to the person he got it from and get his money back i say
how can i try odin without volDown/download mode? is this possible? if so tell me how!
i am not going to take it back because i knew from the beginning there should be something wrong with it.
i thought it was because it had MIUI on it. it's a long story so lets skip it okay.
my question is does the 301k resistor trick work with sgs II???
Are you remembering to hold in the home button aswell as the power and volume buttons?

yes i am, but as i said earlier the volume buttons don't work
if you knew there was a problem with it why did you buy it? sorry that just does not make any sense...you need to get the volume keys repaired..thats the only solution i can think of..sorry
Search USB jig and use that to try to get into download mode or take it to a service centre your only choices .

because it was a lot cheaper! and the guy told me he bought it from someone else and there wasn't a original fw on it and it said that there was no sim card in the phone....but i knew this was because of miui together with unlocking your sim card too early! so i figured lets buy this thing and save some money! but now it seems that the volume keys are not working....but if you don't know you sh*t will you stay out of it please. the next guy told me to look for a JIG this sounds more promising doesn't it? i'm going to make one and we'll see what makes any sense.
i'm sorry if you feel insulted that's not my intention but i feel you are not bein very helpfull here. again sorry i am getting a bit frustrated from this whole thing i thought the S II wasn't give me a hard time because of the unlocked bootloader and such.

if you thought i was having a go then i apologise. but i was not..even if you do use a jig to fix it you will still have problems with the volume buttons. Hence why i said to either take it to the guy you got it from or take it back to samsung..Im not trying to make fun out of your pain bud, i actually want to help.
Use the jig stick the stock firmware on it and send it to them and say its yours. dont say you got it from a friend cause im not sure but they properly would not fix it under the warranty.
hope everything goes ok and keep us updated
My last phone (hd2) had a broken volume button also. I brought it to a local phone repair company and they fixed it in a hour for 35 euro, so I think there is still hope for your phone

[Q] How to turn it on without power button!

Hi
My power-button is broken.
Do you know any way to tun the phone on without it?
Any "trick" and special-combination to press?
Thanks a Lot
Francesco
A jig should get you into download mode (assuming there's nothing else stopping the phone from booting) which should enable you to flash stock firmware & get the phone back to a somewhat 'original' state. From there you can send it in for warranty service (assuming the busted home button is a hardware issue) & hope you get said service (definitely possible, but never a given).

My phone is in "original state".
The button doesn't work 'cause I broke it!
I know I can get it back to the warranty service, but I would like to turn it on without doing it
OK. So I take it you've never flashed a non-stock rom or kernel & that your flash counter isn't 1 or more ? Ahhh. You broke the button. Well I guess you're going to have to send it into Samsung & take pot luck as to whether they fix it under warranty. Or pay to have it repaired.
There's no way you're going to be able to easily switch that phone on with out your power button working. You're asking the impossible. You might be able to repair it yourself given screens can be replaced & other repairs can be carried out by users.
Do a Google search & see if there's a tutorial on how to replace the power button & what parts you might need.

He means you need to bridge the connections of the power button with a wire to make a circuit and see if the phone fires up. And I agree with DJ you've got some big cojones my son!

Use a jig to get your phone into download mode. Download Odin and flash either a kernel, modem or csc file (preferably for your firmware but not necessary). After about 10 seconds your phone will automatically reboot.

It's stuffed. Get it fixed under warranty. I'm not sure what the situation was when the button broke, but I hope that it is still solid in 1 piece so that it gets fixed under warranty. If it looks smashed, then they probably won't fix it under warranty.

Did you lose the actual button? If you have it it should still fit in the grooves on the back housing.
For now like I said earlier, download Odin and flash a modem and your phone will boot. Takes 30 seconds.
Edit: power button flex cable costs about $5 off eBay from China.

For the Odin solution, it's the best one. But I don't actually have an USB JIG to make the trick

Ok. I thought you said you lost the button. Good that you haven't.
15 day wait is a long time wait. You have a few options here:
1) in the meantime make your own jig. There are instructions for it all over the internet.
2) most phone repair shops have them so maybe pop past and ask them to do it for you.
3) There is a thread in the general.section where fellow members will allow you to use their jig. There are plenty of users in most countries. Check it out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1495867
I would also suggest buying one off eBay. Costs about $2 delivered.

Data on your sd card like pics, music etc on the memory card remain if you factory reset or flash a new firmware. Only your apps and settings get wiped.
Or you could flash a no-wipe rom like the current ics lpq. That way everything stays as is.

Thanks, I sorted it. Turns out it. Was hardware.... Nothing a screwdriver couldn't sort out.... My stuff was all on the internal memory not the memory card cause my memory card got corrupted. Having bad luck over the past few weeks.

Glad you got it sorted. For future reference, internal memory is split. Approximately:
1gb system
2gb apps
11.5 gb other stuff like pics, media etc.
Factory resetting will wipe the system and apps. The other stuff remain on the card unless you format it from settings or recovery.

Walk me through that one, no response to anything, power and up volume results in nothing. Plugging into usb results in nothing Windows, ODIN nor Kies registers it.

If you can see the samsung bootloader then yeah there's hope otherwise you're gonna need the $100 fix for it.
But at least people are responding, I got no love on my end, lol
keeping things in perspective, as I posted before, I have never seen anyone report that a jig does any good on this phone..
You would be better off either using JTAG, or calling Samsung, and playing stupid, and tell them it died after you did an update that the phone requested..they will send you a replacement, with no questions asked.
go through the general and q&a sections; you will see that a jig doesn't do anything for this phone..

Well smokestack76 told you differently yesterday. He said over 20 times with a jig. Plus for $1.60 I will give it a try.
yes, for the price, if it makes you feel better, try it..
and, if you believe him, when you can find 20 others that said it did absolutely nothing, then that's your choice.
the sooner you send it in to Samsung, the sooner you will have a working phone..
If Samsung is wiling to send you a loaner phone while you're under warranty i can't see why you wouldnt do that.
I know Nintendo is awesome like that but apparently Samsung reps are quite jaded when you do something silly like ask an honest question.
I wish Samsung would honor warranty services if the device hasn't been on the market longer than year.
I'm A. Maybe he Made a mistake and wants to own up for it insted of weasling into a fraudulent phone.
B. I would be a little jaded as well when I get people calling me all day that have messed up their own phone and are now trying to steal from me.
C. Samsung does honor warranties a year after the device has been on market. YOUR WARRANTY DOES NOT GO INTO EFFECT UNTIL THE ORIGINAL DATE OF PURCHASE. not when the first one of its kind rolls off the assembly line.
Also, wase a jig does work of you are not actually bricked, if you were to be soft bricked the jig would force download mode. I had a captivate I built a jig for, first thing I did was try it on my note. Bam, download mode.
And finally op it's a micro usb jig not mini. Mini is bigger than micro
yeah bro, I know a jig works for SOME phones; it helped me bring my S2 back to life..
However, I have read many many reports of it doing nothing for the Note, so that was why I said what I did..
Plus, people are using the term "Bricked" around here in so many ways, that its hard to know what they mean when they say it..to me, a bricked phone is DEAD, and nothing but an expensive paperweight.....
I can take a video of my note going from off to download mode with nothing but my jig. However the same jig that works on both my phones is out of resistance tolerance on my brothers sgs2.
And yes bricked is used much too often,it is a term to describe when your phone is inert, has no pliability and just sits there, like the baked red clay building material it was named for.
was curious to see if the OP had any luck with the jig....
Well the jig did nothing for me. I suggest send your phone to mobiletechvideos.com for repair, he goes through the JTAG recovery method, and he also unlocked mine... he did a great job. I bricked my Note flashing a ROM for another device by mistake, could not use the jig for anything, so had it repaired. Feeling really happy now... hope this helps.
the jig isn't and was never meant to fix a hard brick...
[history lesson]
Back on captivate, certain bootloaders would disable the button combos for download and recovery, making a simple (I hate the term... But) soft brick into a much stickier situation, so it was discovered that using 300k ohms of resistance across certain pins on the usb port from a powered off state would trigger download mode in seconds, making you then able to simply odin a stock rom and try again.
It was later discovered that the jig had the same effect on the sgs2 with the added benefit of restting the flash counter.
[/history lesson]
If you flash a firmware for the international note on an i717 you will need jtag because you are indeed bricked of the hard variety.

Nope gig still in the mail, however took Note to ATT Device Service Center and they told me mother board failure and replaced it. So might not have been related to flashing, inspection seem pretty in depth, removed back cover, using multi meter type of tool and said mother board didn't provide correct response to input. My mandatory 10 days to return no functioning unit is 17 Dec so don't think will have chance to try the jig before I send it back or be charged $549 for non-functioning unit.

Cheers mate. My point is not that i cant get into download/revovery, i mean to say that its unlikely that its a firmware bug but more likely that it is a hardware bug seince it also occurs when the phone is not on jet -> doesnt reconise that i press the home button so it wont boot into recovery.
EDIT:
I just booted into recovery to see if i could do a keytest and it reconises all the keys apart from the home button... Is there a hardware fix to this? Or something that could be wrong? cheers
Try to clean it ? Or go to your carrier or Samsung service.

I've already taken the phone appart to see if i could see something was up. Nothing to see there... It seems like a hardware failure. The problem is that my warrenty is already void. Replacing the home button requires you to dissasamble the complete lcd and i dont want to risk that, because an LCD replacement costs about a 170 euros...

I have encountered a rather strange problem. My phone was acting a bit strange before i did anything (Fast battery drains) , so i did a factory reset as recommended by samsung.
It seemed to solved the issue, then i decided to enable force GPU in developer options, and then my phone started acting up. It would not want to shut down (the lights of the keypad wont go off), and now it wont want to turn on
I have tried reinserting battery, letting it charge, but all i got was the camera part of the phone getting hot. Nothing else, no display, nothing
I cant even enter recovery/download mode (accessed by reinsert battery + Hold Vol buttons+Home + power button right?)
What can i do to resolve this? Strangely enough, I am running totally stock ROM and Kernal. I have no knowledge on how to use odin and all. I have no more warranty, so i can only ask for your help. Any help would be really appreciated

Where can i find a USB jig? Might be worth a shot
And personally i hate all apple products, and i never use their products before
I have been using android for nearly 2 years, except that i never dared to delve into root/flash as i did not want to void warranties.
There's a thread in General where people offer to lend their jigs to other people. Check; there might be someone near you who can help. Alternatively, search eBay (and probably elsewhere online) "Samsung Galaxy S2 jig". Costs a few dollars.
Re: the Apple thing, it's his sig. He didn't post "go back to your iPhone since you are an Android n00b".

Oh i see, i didnt know it was his sig...oops
Ok, I'll see if i can find/get my hands on a jig somewhere around...Just hoping to bring this expensive brick back to life....somehow
Actually, now that I look at it. I'm not sure it is his sig, per se. It seems to be a standard line he ads to his posts. Perhaps TheUnderling can clarify ?
Good luck. If the jig is no go, given your warranty isn't good, look for JTAG repairers. Do a Google search, or look here, or ask local mobile repair shops. If it ends up not being JTAG'able, as TheUnderling mentioned, you'll need a motherboard replacement. If you get to that point, you can either source one from a 'donor' phone (broken screen or whatever; search eBay), or you can pay Samsung/authorised repairer to replace it.
