2.13 WIFI still slow vs. GS3 (6mbps vs. 13mbps) - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I had read that the WIFI issues were fixed with the latest OTA.
I am now getting 1000kbps up to 6000kbps on the Evo with "Best WIFI performance" selected, and the GS3 sitting right next to it gets 13,000kbps. My laptop also gets around 13,000kbps. I have gotten faster speeds on the Evo, but it is very inconsistent.
Also, web pages are still frequently reloading, where I had read that that issue had been solved too.
Hmmm. Anyone else?

After flashing the deodexed, rooted ROM including the latest OTA, I surpassed 50 MB for the first time ever, about 5-10 MB more than before the OTA, FYI

Michael, great speed. But is it consistent? I get 13 MB, then less than 1 MB, then 6 MB...
Meanwhile the other equipment on the same wireless router all have very consistent speeds, and much faster.
I hope this gets worked out because I LOVE the screen on this thing.
Also, do your web pages reload when you revisit them?

I'm not very familiar with speed tests, but could it be limited to the write speed of wherever it is being to? SD card?
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

It is very consistent. The first test seems to "prime" the wireless connection, and I only get 20-30 MB down and 5 MB up. However, after setting wireless to operate at 5 Ghz,, after the priming, I get 45-50 MB down and 7.5-10 MB up consistently. I have a Cisco wireless router that operates at 2 bands, so you might need to hard code the LTEVO wireless setting to 2.5 GHz, depending on the bands your router operates at. Try that!

Also, I don't have reloading issues on webpages, although very rarely I have to recycle the WiFi, with pages not loading. That is like 1-5% of the time.

Cloaker, we are using the speedtest.net app to test wifi speeds only - unrelated to the memory cards.
Michael - the 2.4 settings seems to have helped a bit. It might be more consistent now, but it's still only about 2/3 as fast as the GS3...
Also, do your web pages reload when you revisit them?

I have my router set to Wireless N only and I getting 35Mb down and 8-10Mb up on the regular.

So, when you have to recycle, is the wifi completely off?
Also, re: the browser: are you saying that if you have several tabs open in the browser, and you swap from one to the other, there is no couple second delay while it reloads?? Mine reloads the pages every time. Facebook, for example, will reload and leave me with whatever new entries have shown up. (the SG3 does not do this, the older entries are still there at the top until I refresh it manually.)

I've got a question. I have FiOS quantum speeds with speeds that are supposed to be 75 down and 35 up. I get around 20/20 with the speed test app. Is this post saying I'm not getting that high of speeds because of this phone? Verizon told me "We don't guarantee WiFi speeds". Is there something I can do to jack up my speeds? The router is Verizon supplied. Thanks.

Huh, how many devices have you tried? I would try at least two computers, if it stays that low, I would try turning off/unplugging your modern for a couple minutes, retesting, if that doesn't work, I'd call my ISP. That's pretty low actual speed, especially if you're paying for 75/35

Yeah. I've called Verizon and they made me reset my modem and it didn't fix the WiFi then they told me they don't guarantee WiFi speeds. I only have this phone and my laptop so I can't test another computer. I only get speeds that fast if I plug in my Ethernet cord to the laptop.

Well obviously a cell phone carrier isn't going to guarantee another company's speeds. Call the ISP who supplies your 75/35.
Edit: I just realized you said you get the proper speeds with a wired connection, do you know if your modern/router, whatever is broadcasting, is using Wireless N? Or is it using B/G?

I never turned on the best performance thing as I hear it burns the battery like no tomorrow and never touched the band settings either.

Funny, my story is exactly the same. Always have a 4G phone, but have never had 4G coverage. I sometimes get 4G when I go to Columbus, but I don't go very often. Cincinnati also has it, but I don't travel there often either. I have 30mb broadband at home and an airrave, so my 3G speeds are good at home. Around town 3G is awful here. Even if I have a strong signal the 3G speeds are absolute ****. Hopefully the Network Vision will make it better, but I'll believe it when I see it.
I use it as much as possible. I mean, I get 5mb down out in town. So it makes downloading high definition porn a lot easier. XD
I use 4g a few times a week. I don't turn it on unless I'm downloading roms. otherwise uses to much battery and takes to long to turn on compaired to wifi. I get 7mb down on 4g, so its not like it isn't quick enough for a phone. My broadband is 10mb. 3g is usually fast enough. By the time I turn on 4g and start a download 3g usually is finished. For apps from the market that is.

4G Speeds?

What is everyone's 4G speeds?? And what ROM and/or radio are you running??
When I first got my Rez on 1/22 my 4G speeds were insane. I could get a steady 28M down and 14M up anytime anywhere in my area (Columbia/Lexington SC). Now my speeds are 2-5M down and and 2M up, but the ping is still very good at 50ms, so it shouldn't be a poor connection issue. Also, I've got 4-5 bars at pretty much all times. Quite a drastic drop off. I've called Verizon and asked them WTF. They will not tell me if they have started throttling in this area on purpose or not. I'm also wondering if its the new radio in the OTA they sent out. My speeds were great pre-OTA and now they are terrible post-OTA, but I didnt test right after the OTA so I dont know if that was the cause or not. Also, now my wifi speeds seem to be limited to 5M down, where as my internet connection is 15M down and my Mac and my Win laptop both hit 15M down, so its not a router/cable modem issue.
I've thought about flashing backwards and testing the pre-OTA radio again now to see if the new radio is the culprit, but I'd like to see what everyone else's experiences are first before I flash back and lose everything on my phone.
So, please post your 4G speeds, location, and rom/radio. Thanks!
New radio on ineffabalis 1.3 and I get 8 down on a bad day 15 down regularly. Your speeds will drop with the more people that get LTE in your area. I used to get 38 down in Cincinnati when the thunderbolt first came out. I got it on launch day.

2-5 down and 2up, Thats about what I get on my fake 4G H+ and even some 3G guys get that. My 4G LTE speeds are about 5-20 down and 1.5-10Up. I am on stock. In jan my verizon speeds sucked like 3-4 down and 1up. My AT&T SGS2 was beating it bad for the first 1/2, but then got better by feb. (I could not play 1080p vids form youtube on it, but could on my SGS2.)
Any way do any of you drop data?
I think I may try and get a new sim to see if that will fix it.
I am averaging 21 up and 8.5 down. And I haven't had a single drop with 4G.

Yea, I realize that the more people get 4G the slower it'll get. That's what worries me. In just less than one month its gone from 28/14 all the way down to 5/2. And Verizon has announced that every smartphone in 2012 will be 4G. How slow will it get down to? My AT&T HSPA+ phone could get 3/1.5 consistently.
One test I did this morning with 4 bars was only 2211 down and 2771 up. Thats 3G speeds.
And the upload is super jerky, it bounces all over the place.

We have a lot of LTE users at work. But I think the tower is closer and is pumped up more.
I've been told, that none of the towers are at full capacity and have lots of room to "improve" as needed, meaning that as needed, they can boost them up to handle more traffic and users.

That was my understanding. From what I had been told the towers in my area are between 25-30% of full power. I haven't really seen speeds get faster since I first got my thunderbolt, but they are more stable. 4G LTE used to bounce ALL over the place. Now whatever speed I get it sits very consistant at.
Speedtest.net shows me getting 15 down it sits at 15 the whole go. It used to be say when I was getting 38 forever ago, that it'd bounce from 30-38 through the whole test.

Data issues, sprint, HTC drivers, or radio...

Hi, so ever since I've picked up this phone, I've had severe data issues and thought, holy hell, my og killed this phone just a day ago, what gives? Well from what I've noticed, I don't think It's HTC at all, I think It's sprint. And my reasoning for this is all day my data sucks, severely but at night about 11:30 pm magically kicks into overdrive, with three bars I get 2Mbps but during the day I can have full signal and I'm lucky to have 1Mbps... Can anyone else confirm this? And if so, what's really going on? I talked to sprint and they say towers are fine/shouldn't be any problems and I'll be lucky to ever see 4g LTE in my area before my contract is up so they aren't scewing with the towers or are they? Conformation from someone else or this beautiful phone goes back... Lol, thanks...

I live in decently un-populated area of Michigan though. Most people are on Verizon here because they rolled out 4G LTE here a few months back.
I find it strange, when I talk to sprint in my area, they say it must be my phone, cause there aren't any updates here what so ever but I know it's not the phone, it gets amazing speeds at off peak times... And the other thing that bugs me is the signal strength doesn't correspond whatsoever to the data speeds I'm getting... Hopefully something/someone gets this cleared up cause technically it doesn't really make sense...

I get very inconsistent speeds through out the day; And when I spoke to Sprint, they gave the "towers are being upgraded" spiel. They also gave me this website to check which towers are being upgraded, or have been upgraded:
https:// network. sprint. com
*Note, they also gave me a $30 dollar credit on my next bill, which is a nice gesture, but I'd rather have better service.
I'm in Houston, and my 3g was acting up and my GPS put me in Joliet, I called sprint and they reset my service, powered phone off, powered phone on and reset my profile. so far, so good.
Edit: I couldn't send this post....dropped connection. I went to settings and set roaming to automatic and instant connection.

Ah totally forgot about that website. Thanks for the reminder. Looks like I'm getting 1 voice, 1 data speed, and 1 data capacity upgrade in the next six months and all at the two corners of my community... all right outside Verizon's socal HQ no less
I just spent 45 minutes on the phone with Sprint. Apparently they are getting a lot of calls with people complaining about data speeds on the 4G LTE.
The Sprint rep tried a bunch of things, but even though I'm showing three bars of signal, I have no Internet. It does work sometimes, just not at my phone or office!
She suggested taking it back to a Sprint store and having them reactivate my OG Evo until this phone gets fixed, either with some kind of software fix, or a new hardware version. She says they are logging all these issues, so they can figure out how to fix it.
I have the same issues (Chicago). Called Sprint last night and told them I'm not paying all this money to have 1990 speeds. They patched me over to Level 2 support (I think that's what they called it) and the guy told me that I didn't have data all day, actually. He did some kind of upgrade and everything popped into place. He asked if he solved my problem and I told him "Yeah... for NOW." We'll see how long it lasts. They have an open ticket for me to take the phone back to the Sprint store by close of business tomorrow if I want to have them test it or trade it. I asked them what for - the problem existed on two phones, it's the NETWORK! I also told them to remove the upgrade charge, which is a very small token for poor service... they did. I'm placated but not happy and I'm trying to be patient.
It could very well be your phone. The first one I had was having extremely slow data speeds and occasionally even dropped data connection, Sprint sent me a replacement phone and it has way better speeds than my original Evo ever did.

3G Connection problems in NW Houston

I spent some time in Northwest Houston recently and my 3G connection acted awfully strange. If I opened settings, it would frequently say "disconnected" under mobile network and would not sync gmail, open web, etc. It would frequently try to connect and stay on for a short bit (very slow connection) but go away again quickly.
I updated profile, prl, rebooted multiple times, but finally just gave up while I was there. Most of the time this was happening, I had 4 or 5 bars of signal and could make phone calls without any issues whatsoever.
Is this a Sprint Network NW Houston issue or is this an EVO LTE issue?
I did switch the network to CDMA only hoping this would help and it made no difference.
from what ive been reading this is common for locations that are doing work on getting the LTE upgraded on that tower. Phone is not the issue. I have seen similar stuff around here in Boston. Could be a good sign i am thinking.

There was a 3G outage yesterday afternoon that caused all of Houston 3G to fail. It was fixed around 1400.
That's standard Houston as of late. It varies. The past few days have been better, but last week was awful. Couldn't hold a 3g connection at all. Probably related to the tower upgrades.

hopefully it is related..... I've been bouncing from 1X to nothing all morning.... (by the beltway and 290)
edit: although when it shows nothing (no 1x or 3g), if I look at the Mobile Network Type under settings, it says CDMA - eHRDP (sometimes 'unknown')
I live NW of Houston, but work on NE side. Just connected to LTE a few times at work.

Near 610 and Homestead, zip code 77028. I hope I can pick it up in other parts of town, on my way home later tonight.

Oh ok. That's about 25 mins away from me so I know I won't be picking up that signal. I hope they flip the switch all over the city soon though.
I have a terrible signal at work. Data is completely unusable on 3g (typical Houston). When I can connect to 4g, the signal is still weak, that part doesn't change, but data speeds are way up.

Yeah, LTE was in and out, for just that one evening. Haven't been able to connect since. That whole area, where I work, is completely neglected by Sprint. When you do get it, let us know.

How can I get Sprint to respond to this slow data?

I've been calling every day, every day they tell me no data outages in my area. Have another Sprint user in my building getting same speeds. I've resorted to installing a 3G roaming PRL because they simple won't do anything about it. Before 9/4 the data was fine, slow at times, but I could at least stream Pandora, etc...

Sorry that's so hard to see... but it's less than 100kbps download on almost ALL of them... It's slower than 56k modem most of the time. I have 3G symbol with 4/6 bars and never had bad data like this in the location before 9/4/2012.
Well you could hold your breath or move to city with lte... Jk but yeah I feel ya on the slow data.

Ever heard of "Sprint Vision"? Maybe its happening in your area now.
via EVO.
This is usually what happens when you contact Sprint for issues:
A Speedtest screenshot would've done this justice .vs the off centered text.

Is it common that when the roll out vision data speeds go to crap before they get better? It's funny as it only seems to be in this 2 mile range around my work. By my house, I'm getting 3G speeds above 1400kbps (which I've never got before). I've told Sprint that, told them that I've updated my profile, basically told them everything and that I just want them to tell an engineer despite what their system shows, that their is slow data in this address range... Still nothing.
Guess I'll just get my contract terminated for roaming...

A speedtest is ONE run. This is a speedtest export of MANY runs.

In the Speedtest Application, just hit the "RESULTS" tab below & it'll give you every run, (date + time, download, upload & ping)
I'm well aware of that, but I wanted more results than that displays, so I exported to CSV. I've fixed the first post so it was better formatting.

I have read that speeds can be affected during the switch over. In my personal experience, it also depends on geographic location. I live in Lake Worth FL, I get 2mb down and almost 900kb up from my house on 3g. Now, I work in North Miami Beach, I'm lucky if I get 100kb down and 3 kb up down here, even on 5 bars. This is even before the LTE rollout. Just because you have a good signal, doesn't mean your data will be fast. I think some areas may be over subscribed, they just don't have the bandwidth available for all their devices in some areas. Hopefully this will get better as they rollout LTE in my area.
If they are upgrading to vision it would be more likely that your speeds would fluctuate rather then stay at a constant low. They may be repairing towers in that area and pushing the load onto remaining towers. That essentially cripples available bandwidth. Had to put up with a similar issue for almost 3 straight months. They should tell you if there are any repairs or improvements being done. Have you tried having your call escalated?

+1 on this. That was going to be my recommendation as well.
CR will probably credit you which looks like you are entitled with the crappy service. And yes, data gets worse during NV upgrades, especially when they are working on the backhaul to the towers. It gets worse before it gets better then you will know its almost time to light up LTE. in short, nothing much more you can do other than leave Sprint but I'm thinking it will be regretted in the end.

Uh, fix it. No one should have data this slow consistently. Every single second. I understand periods of slowness, but this is absurd.
And, it looks like they fixed it last night... Back to normal 400-600kbps.
I've had data that slow at home for close to 15 months, all I got was an Airave (sounds like a motto on a t-shirt).

lol there are places that have had data that slow for 2+ years now with no fixes from sprint.
Get an Airave!, I just moved to a remote area of Hawaii, no data and 1bar at best. Two days after calling for an airave I recieved it. Now 5bars and full 3g. Best part is its free!
