Anyone Interested in Joining a Team? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am writing this as an open invitation for anyone who would like to join the Darkforest Development Team.
Who are we?
The Darkforest Group started in 1998 and in recent years has been home to some of the best flash developers who have produced some of the most well-known flash mobile themes for a range of phones (specifically Samsungs) like the Samsung Monte and Samsung Star/Tocco Lite.
Now we aim to replicate this success in producing a series of stable and reliable ROMs and modifications for as many devices as we can across a wide range of manufacturers.
ROMs
The ROMs can either be based on stock or built from source, its whichever you feel more comfortable with and all ROMs will eventually be given a custom theme (we have someone working on the specific design right now but other themers are still welcome).
To make the ROMs different to other ROMs, they will contain a series of user customizable tweaks and additional features.
Modifications
We are looking to include a range of modifications in the ROMs like hide and reorder quick settings, Advanced Power Menu's where the user can choose what items are on that menu and general UI tweaks specific to the device the ROM is being made for.
Therefore anyone interested should be aware that smali and/or java skills are preffered but not required as while they sound hard to do they are in reality fairly easy if familiar with smali.
Interested?
There are several ways to contact us regarding interest with this, you could leave a post in this thread, contact me via PM or register at the Darkforest forum and send a PM to Darkforest himself
Questions?
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have

I can teach, I'm trying to set up sort of a central place for us all to chat - any idea's? obvious ones are fb group or google+ hangout and maybe IRC though too much stuff gets lost in IRC whereas you can save it in a doc on fb or g+

Ok, for people intersted in joining the Darkforest Development Team I have created a board on our forums to discuss and develop there - of course we are not restricting posting of ROMs to just the Darkforest forums - all ROMs made are welcome to be posted in other forums as well.
The board is located here

Definitely willing to learn if there's a teaching method. I love android and have been wanting to learn to create ROMs for a while

I'd like to learn as well. I have a number of devices to work with, mostly Samsung. I have a flexible schedule with some free time on my hands, as well.
I have a ridiculous eye for detail and an obsession with order. I think I'd be a natural at coding.

Honestly i really REALLY want to get into developing but i have no idea where to start while a lot of free time, if you or any developer would like to be my mentor i would appreciate it more than anything! I just got this phone awhile ago and honestly am extremely smart, just graduated 1 nd 1/2 years early out of highschool so i dont think it would be too hard at all for me to catch on! I would LOvE to help! Ill eventually try donating as much as possible (could be anywhere from 10-800$) just depends on other things

I am a software dev. I use to dabble in linux kernel stuff. I also use to work with precentral on webos for original pre -. I am in a 4G area. I have been working on some old g tablet stuff. I always wanted to get into android dev but it just keeps getting away from me. Only problem is I only have one photon and its my only phone. Good news is I have no problem doing any testing as long as its possible to revert back. I would be up for any project. I want to see this phone used to it's full potential.

Whos the most skilled android developer on XDA ?

You may refer one person per each post with a little backup words, on why did you choose him ?
The point of this question is to find that skilled developer and try to know how he started on developing apps so we can try do the same as he did
1 2 3 start!!
Ps: Dont forget to link his profile and his work too.
Studing maybe?

Im sure those ports are using CYANOGENS code. So, with that said, it is by far Cyanogen. 99% of the custom ROM's use code from cyanogenmod.
I admire cotulla because of what he has done for the hd2, but I'm more than sure we have devs equally and more talented, just don't know them.

I couldn't agree more. All of the developers have their own niche. There are ROM devs, kernel devs, app developers.
Absolutely no offence to the op . It's kind of like asking who makes the best car parts (best analogy I could come up with off the top of my head ). There are so many parts that go into making that car work.
Edit: Thinking about it, maybe a better question would be "Who are some developers that you would like to recognize as being just plain awesome at what they do?" These are the people who do their best to improve the community by dedicating hours of their lives to giving away the cool "thing" they made without expecting anything in return. There are so many of those people around here.
Dsixda because he created such a wonderful kitchen for all of us and made Porting ROMs a breeze

Where did you learn to develop?

Alright, I've been going around the forums a bit, and more and more I'm seeing tons of "young'ns" developing. You know, along side everyone else.
My question is, where did you get all of this experience? Are there workshops open? Online classes? Did you just learn yourself? Do you have to be a son or daughter of Hephaestus? Do tell, I am intrigued.

There will be a xda-university (website) soon so you can learn more about developing.
I learned from xda users (devs, etc) Google and YouTube.

I'm learning to skin from Google, XDA, etc. More importantly, I'm also picking the brains of my Team members and huddle mates.
I had a personal phone call with Larry Page and he taught me everything.
Lolno, Google, bugging other people for help, more google, XDA, bugging even more people, taking chances, and something I read in a book lol

Apps and Roms have their similarities, but they are pretty different from each other, what I kinda did was took my base, and took another rom that was built off the same base and compared and contrasted the different files to see what did what, and made my own custimizations from there

There's an XDA Developers' Android Hacker's Toolkit available on Amazon, but according to the table of contents it only covers some theming stuff and no ROM building so it depends on what interests you.

Do you have unlimited data allowance? As I have found out first hand, this is a crucial factor in the way you will learn and progress because a lot of the good tutorials are in the form of YT videos.

Also depends on what you actually want to developer. ROMs? Android apps? Games? Something else? They all require slightly different routes. But a good understanding of programming in general will be a very good help in anything you do

I'm your age too I do developing primarily on computers though and I have been doing that for a couple of years now. I can say that the best place to start is to learn a programming language. Most Android apps are coded using Java so, if you have some experience with coding learning Java would help you alot. But if you have little to no experience coding I would suggest you start off with something like C maybe even python but syntax is very different compared to Java so C is recommended. After you have enough experience with that I'm sure you can jump into building ROMs.
Good Luck!

my problem is I don't have a unique and practical idea. I'd wish I could come up with something that would be lucrative & beneficial but those ideas are limited and I wouldn't want to do something someone else has already done.
If I wanted to learn I'd get the latest Android Studio & follow some "Hello World"- type walkthroughs. I'd think YouTube vids would be helpful.
Then try to latch on to an open source project since I'd have an existing project to see how it's done.

I've always found Head First Series to be good. Try Head First C or if your feeling confident try Head First Android Development. But adding on to what jawz101 said the best way to learn a programming language really well is to do your own project, also, check out "professional" open source projects to learn the style and even some tricks of the trade.

Need a logo designed for a new dev project for vz gs4

@Treken @hlxanthus and I are starting a new project under the team name OctOS.
I'm not entirely sure where the name came from fully. Treken and I were tossing names around for our collaborated git. All the super-cereal names were taken(like epic, uber, massive, greatness, betterthanĪ€^3, and manbearpig). Somehow we were talking about various animals and got on Octopi. I forget all the reasons for why an Octopus is cool, besides being able to camouflage, hunt, and ink stuff.
We could design our own logo(and will if we have to). But we are all busy working on our various projects for this and our current releases. Trek said I should post and ask the talented folks on here if they'd give it a shot.
So we need a logo, banner, and potentially ideas for future bootanimations. The logo primarily needs to be suitable for an aroma splash screen.
Basically, I'm sick of team logos that use:
block lettering from generic-fonts-r-us; anything morbid, death related, or dark/evilesque; lenseflares; seriousness(life is too serious)
I imagine it being a big cartoony googly eyed Octopus that is colorful and carefree.
If anyone wants to get involved with the project(logos, theming, or dev). Hit us up. We welcome anyone that's of similar mindset.
Why a team?
We wanted to work together on this and provide a great ROM with great user support. Too often you will find Devs(especially in teams) that are too good to answer questions from newbies, too proud to talk and discuss issues they are trying to overcome, and unwilling to help other dev groups out because it doesnt benefit them. We believe that Linux and Android are still community built and supported. Without sharing the information we gain we don't grow.
My friend Grommish has also setup a dedicated buildbot box for the project. Once we get rolling we can set scheduled updates. :good:
It's not so much about a team and banners as it is about the proven support the members give each other and the users
Info on the project:
The project will a source built, multi carrier, eventually multi platform, 4.3 AOSP based, Google Edition ROM. It will feature all the extras and mods that my current 4.2.2 build has and should be 100% stable in all the included aroma preconfigs.
Mod note:
I wasn't sure where exactly to put this as it directly relates to the Verizon gs4 first and foremost. Until we have the vzw version working the others will be waiting.

Not sure if I'll need this

The name comes from the Greek word "Okto" and Latin word "Octo" meaning eight. Eight is the number symbolizing new begining. We are assembling a team that is focused on advancement of android by working through problems together and overcoming any obstacles that may arise. It seems that there are some out there that are very haughty and feel like the community owes them. We want to change up the pace by offering a team that cares about not only finding solutions to problems in a ROM but listening to input the user has to offer because the bottom line is the user will remain loyal if they know their best interest is in mind. Hang in there, we're about to take you on an epic adventure that will for sure leave you satified.
wrx4memp is notorious for doing an outstanding job on bootanimations and he has helped many devs including myself with this.
He'd be my first pick for a logo.

This is just to potentially get logos/splash screens made. :good: it will be posted correctly in original Dev when it's ready.
If not it's not a huge deal because we know how to use gimp and pshop. But we think some others could do a better job.
