Hey fellow members of XDA, I hope you're all well!
Anyway, I have a question relating to Android phones. Recently, I purchased a Nexus 7 - I was previously an iOS user, but, after using the Nexus 7 - I found Android was actually on par, if not better than, the iOS experience.
So, although my original plan was to purchase an iPhone 4S - I have decided against that notion - and instead I am planning to buy an Android phone, and possibly even a Windows Phone - once Windows Phone 8 is released.
I will be using the phone for mainly internet browsing, social networking, music, movies, gaming, and perhaps even reading at times - although I already have a Nexus 7 for those, you cannot really take it everywhere despite the size of it, and no 3G/4G severely hamper it's connectivity. By that I mean, you can hardly fit it in your pocket.
Currently, I am thinking about purchasing either the HTC One X - or the Samsung Galaxy S III. Both are great phones, and while HTC has the advantage of Tegra 3 - and a staggering 0.1 GHz faster processor - the Galaxy S III has SuperAMOLED Plus, and it also has expandable storage. Both, in my opinion, are equal to each other: neither are truly better than the other, comprehensively, in any factor. GSMArena notes that the SGS3 chipset, the Enyxos, is not as good as the Tegra 3 chipset present in the One X. Tegra 3 is certainly preferable, since Tegra 3 offers a great gaming experience with exclusive games, such as the recently released Horn.
The Windows Phone 7 phones available right now, to me, are underwhelming, but if rumours are anything to go by, WP8 seems intruging, and may even be a possible contender to the current smartphone superpowers.
The deals I have found, though, note that the HTC One X is cheaper, however, presumably because it was announced earlier.
I have found a HTC One X available for £325 - or alternatively, on contract, £18.50 a month.
The Galaxy S 3, however, costs £410 (T-Mobile), and contract @ £22.75. (For purchase, both devices are second hand, but in Mint condition - boxed, unscratched, no faults etc.)
I used moneysupermarket to find the cheapest contract deals, and CEX to find the cheapest second hand, but mint condition, devices.
However, with the announcement of the Galaxy Note 2 at IFA, as well as, to a lesser extent, the Sony Xperia T (I think Sony phones are sexy), I am deciding whether to hold of for a couple of months. The Galaxy Note 2 may, however, be too big? I've seen the Galaxy Note, and it's a mammoth of a 'phone.' (Currently Galaxy Note users, can you comfortably use a 5.3 inch screen? And would you be able to handle a 5.5 inch screen? How comfortable is it in the hand, and are there times where the size just becomes overwhelming?)
I now think it would not be a good idea to purchase a phone now, a time where the next Nexus phone, and the next iPhone, are due to be released.
While both are most likely out of my price range, (£350 recommended, but £400 absolute limit - doesn't include top-ups, and for monthly deals, £25-£28 monthly - doesn't include upfront payment) would you think it would be worthwhile to wait until the release of the next Android/iOS/WP8 flagship phones, or do you think that nothing major will happen? By major, I mean the S3 or One X become virtually redundant compared to the newly released phones. I have seen recently that HTC are preparing a WP8 device, and are also preparing another flagship phone, for example, while all of us know that the iPhone 5 will soon be released, and the Galaxy Nexus is already approaching it's one year birthday.
Thanks for the help! I will listen to all suggestions, and I am also open to other phones available in the market now, or possibly in the future.
Please, though, do NOT mention BlackBerry's! Or any WP7 phones, at the moment.
EDIT: Ok, after researching the specs for the Galaxy Note 2 - it is basically an enlarged SGS3 - although it has 1GB more RAM, and it's processor is clocked 0.2GHz higher. In that case, I wont specifically wait for the Note 2.

TL;DR but if you want to get the note II just because of the processor you can overclock the S3 all the way to 2.1 ghz but I recommend not anymore than 1.8/1.9. The S3 is a great phone I have it right now.
Also the One X has a much faster CPU if you look at quadrant scores. But really you get 60 fps on all games basically and butter smooth.
Oh yes, I forgot that you could overclock Android devices... Nonetheless, I doubt 0.1Ghz clock difference will provide a completely different, and better, experience.
Wait for the next Nexus.

HTC is a pain to s-off and you have to remove your void stickers and take apart your phone and use a wire to do it....its not fun and very easy to render your device unusable....gs3 is incredibly easy if you like customizing...get a gs3...

a lot of custom roms and kernels have different radios in them and if you cwm then root your HTC without s-off first then you will not be able to use your WiFi and your device will constantly try to turn it on and kill your battery....so you can unlock it then cwm then root but unless you take it apart first and s-off then it's pointless to Rom it. otherwise you will run into problems. a lot of roms say s-on is ok until you flash and realize your WiFi isn't working...so HTC will give you pain unless you know your device 100 percent inside and out....if you do it make sure you touch the right contacts with the wire at the right timing or you just ruin your phone....had that problem myself and went and bought a gs3 plug it into Odin and let Odin do the magic for you with out opening up your device just to completely unlock it (s-off) gs3 is the way to go....HTC has better processors but they have to turn down the clock because there batterys are horrible....if you want speed and battery life and the option to customize get a Samsung...

I've had my Desire HD for almost a year now and it's a great phone and has served me well but once again the new year has rolled around and my annual phone savings have started to swell so I'm looking to get a new phone.
The only phone at the minute that seems like a formidable upgrade from my desire HD and has caught my eye is the Galaxy Note, my main question however is:
Should I part with my money now or wait to see what 2012 has to offer?
Any replies/suggestions/opinions are appreciated, thankyou.
I heard that there's going to be a very fast phone coming in 2015.
I'd wait. quad core phones should be rolling out within the next few months.
unless you get a super good deal on a dual core phones out now, and don't need to have your new phone asap, really no reason not to wait just a couple months or so.
now why the heck would one need a quad core? one more way to uncharge your phone?!
ptt: if you don't need the best cam, i would def. lay down your money now on the GNex, best phone i ever owned... and the pure Google Android experience is awesome in my opinion
I'm not a massive fan of the nexus, just not my cup of tea design wise, if I'm to get a new one it'd be the note hands down.
I think I'll stick with my desire HD for now and get one of those lovely £10 a month GiffGaff simcards, upgrading so soon is a bit silly considering I only want the note because of it's superior browsing experience, everything else is just buffer.

No matter when you buy, the next generation will be out a month later.
If you want the best futureproofing ATM, Galaxy Nexus is the best choice. But if you are into the HTC experience since you had the DHD so long, HTC should announce their Tegra 3 quad core phones shortly after CES, in case you want to look out for that as well
I'm personally going to wait to see the selection of tegra 3 devices that come out or are announced over the next 4 or 5 months before making a purchase decision. My CM7 Touchpad will do for now.
I think it's better to wait for quad-core phones.
After a couple of days pass there'll be CES! I think a lot of great quad-cores (actually not only quad-core devices) will be shown at the exhibition. So, there'll be much more devices that can 'catch your eye' and more options to choose from
They're out to get you
No matter what you do, the manufacturers are all out to get you in the end. You buy one now, 3 months later, there's something new that's out that you can't just get an "upgrade" to your existing phone for.
Samsung is a classic example. They could deploy ICS to the Galaxy S, but instead of just doing it and giving their customers what they want, they make them go out and buy the S2 (which is a fine device... ), but it only helps the carriers lock people into another 3 year contract, when they only had a year in to begin with.
It's a serious cramp in consumer leverage.
Wait till Cortex A15 processors (and Qualcomm's Krait architecture) come out.
The only quad core devices that will be coming out in the next roughly 3 months will all likely be Tegra 3, which IMO has a lackluster GPU and is A9. Tegra 3 definitely is pretty nice, but I think A15 chips with more powerful GPUs will be much better than Tegra 3.
I think it's safe to say that the Galaxy S3 is going to be something special. I'd wait to see just how good it is rather than buying now.

I agree, the new S3 will be something. Wait mid year and see what gets announced.
S3 will no doubt be fantastic specs wise but I just don't like the plastic construction and the lack of a bit of weight in Samsung phones and I know I'm not alone in that, so will probably be buying the HTC Edge, although if it's disappointing or not right for some reason I'll probably just try to find a good 32GB Gnex deal, can't justify spending the €500-600 most are looking for on Ebay for the 16GB model atm.

Yes. That's true and that is exactly what causes the low resale value of an android phone, IMHO.

so you manufacturers keep cranking them out please because I don't do contracts
I cannot wait until the next batch of phones comes out because then I can grab a couple of extra S2's on craigslist
I am flat out impressed with a galaxy s 2 the only thing is really lacks is not enough resolution for the screen
for most things including games and videos you cannot notice the resolution lacking but the interface is too crowded things are too large I found lcd resolution allows me to change the dpi too an affective 160 dpi which simulates a 1200x720 screen resolution much much better
if a new galaxy s 3 has a 720 resolution screen keeps the SAMOLED screen feature I will buy it
otherwise I am perfectly happy with a S2's amazing feature set
If you're in America, don't wait for the S3. We most likely won't get them until late 2012 unless you fork over $800 for the international version.
Just my humble opinion, but quad cores are a bit early to adopt, there isn't going to me much application support utilizing all four cores till they flood the market, and there was already a bunch of new dual cores announced at CES - granted it's only the first day.
I think you better wait and buy something more worthwhile

I'm really leaning towards the AT&T Galaxy Note but I am somewhat swayed by the HTC One X. Leaning more towards the Note because of the development and SD card. I just love Samsung phones and have had bad experiences with HTC phones. But the one thing keeping me from the Galaxy Note is the horrible S3 processor. Its to bad we didn't get the Qualcomm S4 chip like the ONE X got.
HTC One X Pros:
-Great Design
-Awesome screen
-S4 Chip
Cons:
-Locked Bootloader (kind of a newbie at rooting but have been successful flashing roms with the i777, and skyrocket)
-16GB internal and THAT'S IT
-Horrible at multitasking (pretty much a deal breaker)
-Many report defects with the phone: screen issues, loose buttons, dust in screen
G-NOTE Pros:
Development support (Tons of ICS roms)
Very easy to root and flash rom
Love the form factor
Spacious
SD-Card
Cons:
Processor, while faster than the Exynos chip, its still out performed
Think I answered my own question, but would love to hear some thoughts on those who have been using the Note now for a couple months. I HATE LAG and read the Note suffers from this, but I plan on flashing Saurom.

I had the onx x first and exchanged it for about 5 times for defects. Good luck getting a perfect one.
screen is better quality on one x. But the note is almost as good with bigger size.
I'm done with the one x. Happy with the note since switch.

You pretty much said it yourself the not e is totally the way too go. I considered going to the X when it first came out but with all the little problems it seems to have and me loving everything about my Note i see no reason to get it.
I guess I've had two devices without lag or I just don't know what lag is. I guess that click an icon to and it takes half a second on occasion to do that action is lag but I'm just not that impatient.

If you were even considering the One X why not wait for the S3? It is very comparable in size to the X. The only real difference I see is a little bit of real estate and a pen.
I am seriously looking at the S3 as a backup phone to my Note. I can't see it replacing the Note though.
This is like comparing apples to oranges...
Unless you are buying international, the one x will not be quad. Since you mentioned att I'm assuming you want an att phone, might be wrong here.

The GNote is a great phone, which has been remarkably bug free for the most part. I am also going to pick up a SGSIII after launch. I just sold my skyrocket to make room for the SGSIII. I never even considered the HOX.
I like to switch out periodically.

With an ICS ROM there is no lag on the Note that I can tell. You would be sorry real quick with the limited storage and locked bootloader. The Note's processor has never been an issue to me. While not as "good" as the Exynos, still a quality chip with LTE support. Note is a great phone. I've owned it since day one.
I have an upgrade available and I was thinking about getting the HOX ---
but I think Im gonna wait for the S3 or the next iPhone. The HOX and its lack of features (removeable battery, expandable storage, unlocked bootloader) makes me think its going to be another Atrix. All the balls but noone to play with it. (Although the Atrix has come a long way since it was released).
If you want, get the Note first. When the gs3 comes, get that and sell the Note. I am really spoiled by the Huge screen....I dont think I will switch anytime soon. Unless 「Note 2」

The One-X has to many shortcomings which far overshadow the few good things about the device. I wouldn't even consider the device.
The S3 seems not special enough. My next device will probably be a note 2

If i were you i'd get the Htc one x, and share your experience with htc with us. I had it with htc, good design but lots of hardware issues. I had the titan, issue gallore.

I think the fact you can buy two spare batteries for the note for 15$ is a pretty good argument haha
add to the fact that you can have 48+ gb's on the note
I don't see what good a camera with zero shutter lag is if your going to fill up the 9 gb's the user has available in absolutely no time.
After upgrading to ICS, I've experienced no lags or hiccups with the S3 processor
The Note is better than the One X, but i dont think it is better the SGSIII so the SGS3 will have to give me my new phone Fix till the Note2 drops.........Cant wait on both of these devices.
I purchased the One X the day it came out, upgrading from a galaxy s2. Had to take first one back because of a broken speaker. Kept the "good" one for a week then took it back and was going to wait for the sgs3... then out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimmer of sunlight shining off the Galaxy note.
I said meh and figured I'd keep it a couple weeks and wait for the 3. Surprised to say that I cancelled my pre-order on the sgs3 yesterday (had the phone about a week now).
Love the note, the development community is great and diverse (even coming from the vastly populated sgs2 community), and the accessory / upgrade options that the note has well established.
One X multi tasking finished it off for me, sense took way too much memory, battery life hurt, screen was great but I'm spoiled by the perfect contrast of the amoled since the sgs2 (I am in darker environments most often and the inverted screens are unbeatable on amoled). Locked boot loader will eventually be cracked but I don't want to support a company (at&t or htc) doing that anyways, so it made the decision that much easier.
I'm a big benchmarker myself, so seeing some of the scores on the note felt like a punch in the gut at first. But after loading cm9 and tweaking a bit I've got mine running great with no noticeable lag at all, which is less than I can say for my sgs2 on cm9 and especially the HOX (even without sense).
Go grab the hox play with it for a bit, you get 30 days return with at&t. But know that the processor isn't something you're going to hold and look at daily (like the feel of the phone, or the bad ass screen- both of which the note wins out on IMO) :beer:

I hadn't even seen this thread until after I exchanged for an AT&T Note, but I got the AT&T HTC One X two weeks ago.
My summary of it was: ICS and the Hardware are nice, but coming from the SGS4G, I liked having an external sdcard.
Since the HOX bootloaders are locked and s-on, not really much rom development yet. I'm sure there will be awesome roms when they unlock.
So with that, I figured I'd keep my phone stock + root for a while and wait for unlocked bootloaders. But the software on the HOX is kinda flaky. I lost my job a few weeks ago and need phone calls from recruiters. The other day I got 5 emails stating that they tried calling me but no answer. That won't work for me.

I swap phones all the time. I am always curious about what is new.
That being said I am a huge fan of the note, but snagged a one x at launch.
Within the first hour, or the honeymoon phase, I was in love. The one x is well built, and is a snappy phone. However, with natural and practical use - the phone loses its luster with the multi tasking. While it may not seem like a big deal - imagine an app, or a web page re loading fresh at every view.
Also, imagine a phone with no sd slot, leaving you with no greater than 8gb storage for media once all of your apps were installed. The point of owning a smart phone is a one stop shop of a device - one that you can browse the web, listen to music, make calls, use apps etc. the point of a smartphone, for me at least is to NOT carry multiple devices for life's activies. I don't have an unlimited data plan, so te fact that I couldn't store my music on the phone was a deal breaker, since I use my phone at least 5 days a week for music.
Also, the gps performance was sub par. I can not confirm that this was or was not my particular unit- but if the phone wasn't under the window of my car it would quickly lose gps signal.
Note is one of the best phones I've used. The only downside is that it requires almost constant 2 handed use. Sure you may get away with some one handed action, but not while driving.

Don't get me wrong - rhe one x feels and looks superb. The display is, although smaller, just as beautiful as the note's. However, after the initial "wow" factor wears off, You begin to feel like the onex was kinda pushed out the gate. It's poor memory management is assumed to be directly related to allocating system resources to making sure sense runs well and good - which it does.
My final point being - of you were to try a device for 30 days, I would test a note. There are some cool things happening almost daily now to keep you interested and also improving an already awesome device. Give htc some time to figure out their situation and figure out if they want REALLY sell their flagship device or not.
When I saw the Note I just feel in love with this device from the bigging and watch story on it on youtube and web and forums about other people posted about the device.
I did look into the HTC ONE X
I was so upset it didn't support SD Card that really turn me down on this device.
don't get me wrong both are wonderful devices and it's up to you what device you would like to have and do research on it before you buy it.

I'm going to the states (California) for Christmas with my friend and I am to buy a new phone.
I have set off $500 to it (as I too am buying Nexus 10 32gb), but I am having a hard time making a decision.
Originally I wanted a Nexus 4 (and still do), but I was not fortunate enough to order one when they were in stock, and now it has been two weeks and no news of when they will be, so I am thinking that I probably won't get one in time for the 19th of December... Here in Denmark the phone is about $700, and I really can't justify that. But $500 (taxes and shipping included?) I'd buy one.
My only concerns about the Nexus 4 is the screen (people say that is it worse than S3 & One X), battery life, camera and lack of internal storage. I also just heard that it does not have OTG (perhaps a software error). If I can't have the Nexus 4 I was wondering what phones you guys would recommend?
I am having a really hard time picking between the HTC One X and Galaxy S3, as I prefer to have the latest and greatest from android (4.2).
I like the SD card on the Galaxy S3, but I think the One X has a better design. I guess they are both equal in speed, but how about display and camera? What are your thoughts about the two phones?
If everything else fails, I could blow my budget and get a used $600 Galaxy S3 4G (Quad core version), but I would almost prefer a Nexus 4 over that.
What do you guys think, any other phones on the market that is worth looking at? High end devices, that you can get somewhere cheap on cyber monday unlocked at about $500-600?
I have also been looking at the Lumia 920, but I guess this is not really the forum for it I am afraid that it does not have enough app support to suit my needs
If you buy an S3 or a One X, you'll soon start cursing yourself for lack of software updates. Buy the Nexus 4, it will be well worth the wait. Oh, and the screen of N4 isn't bad, its just that the One X has the most awesome screen of any phone ever produced.

The thing is, we have no Google store in Denmark so I will have to pay a ridiculous price for it (more than a new S3). As long as the S3 and One X has proper development communities I am thinking it'll be OK.
If I can get a Galaxy S3 with 4G (quad core version) for even less than a Galaxy Nexus, I am thinking that might be the way? Unless google starts putting some on sale so I can get one before the 19th of December....
Or do you guys know where I can get a 16 gig version for $500?
There is quite a bit of development for the Galaxy S3. There is a stable CM10 ROM posted on Cyanogenmod's site.
Go for One X , overall better . Nexus 4 is lacking MicroSD slot which is a big minus and android version doesn't really matter , cyanogenmod is faster than stock roms

The one X has no Micro SD either
I help it in my hand today, I love the design, but it feels a bit chunky compared to the S3, also power button is placed weird.
Sense is lagging, and I don't see a Cyanogenmod for One X without bugs
Just curious as to what the next Android device you want to get? Things keep advancing so fast, quad cores are coming to trend now and with Kit-Kat, there are a lot of possibilities. I'm considering switching from Sprint to AT&T, to get the LG G2! I'm so tired of Sprint and how crazy slow they are... I can get more, and significantly faster data with AT&T. The beizels on the G2 are a huge selling point for me, fitting a 5.2 inch screen into the same form factor as an HTC One is impressive. Not to mention the quad core 2.2 GHz processor on it... That's ridiculous, and I love my Nexus, but my god, that makes this look average... What about y'all?

I know what you mean! Things are progressing at such a ridiculous rate in the mobile world; its incredible. Especially Intel. They've made an absolutely shocking amount of progress in the past year. They've basically done what took ARM companies 3-4 years in 12 months. I'm really looking forward to Intel chips in our smartphones and tablets; we'll finally be able to crush Apple's in-house designs!
As for my next device, I'm definitely going to be getting the Nexus 5. A 5" device with a Snapdragon 800, OIS, Android 4.4 and other incredible hardware? Count me in! I sold my Galaxy Nexus a few weeks back, after the Nexus 4 price drop (I got a shockingly good price for it, too) in preparation for the N5. Now, I realize that SOME of the leaked specifications may not be totally accurate, but I am also hoping that we get the 5" display in the smaller-than-Nexus 4 frame. That would totally sell it for me.
I will probably will continue to use my galaxy nexus until it dies. It have been an excellent phone.
If it dies however I will buy the Nexus 5 midst likely.
I don't think i could use anything else other than a Nexus and be happy with it. Mainly because of the updates.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition. Used the Spencer features and they can't be beat if doing a large amount of sketching.
But I may wait until spring as the N10 is still great. Use a capacitive stylus with good results.
I only got the Nexus 10 this summer, so I'm good with my tablet for a long while I hope.
My Droid RAZR M I got last October, so I would sooner replace that. If I decide to leave Verizon next time, then I may well go for a Nexus for a phone as well. I love getting the latest official updates OTA.

I actually gave this some more thought, and I do not think I will go Nexus on my next phone for one reason, I want to keep a microsd slot. I keep a ton of music and other files on my phone I simply don't need on my tablet, and it irritates me such a simple convenience is being phased out by so many new phones. Screw the cloud model, I want my files on me when I want them without a connection.

Sigh... me, too. I've been wanting to come on this thread and pledge allegiance to the phone I hope the Nexus 5 will be. If it's a Snapdragon 800 / Adreno 330 / 1080p / 3000 mAh G2 with standard button placement and at least 2 Gb of RAM... running pure, unbloated, updated Android... then the Nexus 5 will be a stun-gun of a phone for 2013. (darn it... just drooled on my N10.)
But... we get all that and no removable memory? I know, that would mean space, weight, cost, whatever. But Samsung can do it on their flagships (with the added benefit of replaceable batteries). Seems like such a simple thing for winning freedom from needing access to a good WiFi signal.
If the N5 overcomes the N4's hardware limitations that now prevent the use of Nexus Media Importer -- and along with it the unrooted read/write use of USB card readers & memory sticks -- that'd go a long way. Let's just say I'm not holding my breath, since Google appears to have a different agenda.
For a brand that touts such an open OS, the box they put it in sure is closed.

I always only had 16 gb Sd cards so going from 16 gb s3 to 32 gb HTC didnt make a single difference for me I have 8 gb of music and about 10 gb free on device for movies, and i think thats the space i need.

OK... But you had to pay a lot more for that 32GB model I bet. My Droid RAZR M came with 8GB built in, and for only $20 I added another 32GB. I can even upgrade it to a 64GB microsd for less than $50. Good luck trying to get that kind of bargin upgrade on a non-microsd phone. Another added benefit... Let's say your phone meets an untimely death in the laundry machine, well at least with microsd your photos and music are perfectly safe.

I'll get a Galaxy Nexus 2 when it comes (I hope it does). My Galaxy Nexus holds up for a while and I use my Nexus 10 for gaming. I'm not a fan of lg. I hope Samsung will produce a Nexus phone again.

I'm hoping with the SG Note 3, the LG G2 -- and hopefully the Nexus 5 -- already or soon to be running the Snapdragon 800, we'll start to see some cool 64-bit apps. When the 64-bit world takes hold, that could be a nice time to pick up a SG S5. Samsung should have multitasking to a new level by then, too.

Hope Snapdragon 800 has better battery management than Snapdragon 600 or else i wouldnt worth it to upgrade imho. The speed upgrade means nothing, only think that makes your phone faster is a well tuned rom/kernel. My ex Galaxy S3 with Cm10.2 and a custom kernel is the fastest thing i've ever used by a ridiculous mergin. Everything happens instanlty and its last gen,
Also my HTC ONE with the 4.3 official Rom is also like a new phone. So much faster and battery life is like 2x what it used to be.
SideNote for Lg G2. Will lg EVER make a decent looking phone? I am sorry but i dont care if Lg G2 is the best phone ever released, its so boring looking i would never consider buying.
Maybe Nexus 5, need to wait and see
I agree, the G2 looks kinda plain -- at least while viewing it on a 2D screen. Could be pretty comfortable in the hand, though, with those backside curves. I was a little surprised, papakaliati, to hear you say you're interested in the Nexus 5 after what you had to say about LG and specifically their G2. Most folks are thinking it will be LG manufacturing the Nexus 5 and that it'll look a lot like the G2.
Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 32GB model. Already have it on pre-order. I had always said that the perfect device would be the Note 10.1 with the Nexus 10 screen, and voila! Can't wait!
An 8 inch Android tablet, probably the LG G Pad 8.3 because it's the first one to have 1080p. Or the next Note 8.0.
The Nexus 10 is too big to play games, etc.
Also maybe the next Nexus 5.

I agree that there's no point in trying to go any faster than 'instantly' ...sounds like you had a sweet setup with your S3!
With Kit Kat supposedly supporting ARM-64 and with Qualcomm, Tegra & Exynos -- and AMD & Intel? -- all producing 64-bit mobile processors in 2014, some interesting 64-bit applications might not be far behind, as well as some significant energy demands, like you've pointed to. I bet power-management & battery-design teams are putting in all-nighters to bring us more innovations like big.LITTLE... and to overcome the downsides of lithium-sulfur technology, which could increase battery life by a factor of 4.
Yeah, I wasn't talking about new processors running 32-bit apps faster, though there will, of course, be some performance gains as we'll as some overhead hits. I was thinking about the new capabilities heading our way once applications cross over into 64-bit territory -- whenever that is -- and not just better encryption and data-bunkering.
We'll be looking at real-time audio and image editing, providing such things as on-the-fly video-effects management... and faster vector processing, which game devs will surely take advantage of, like Infinity Blade III has for Apple's new phone. I'm eager to see the impact of 64 bit on multimedia multitasking. General improvements in multitasking could get us to the 32-bit 4Gb RAM ceiling surprisingly soon.
After that, the 64-bit RAM upper limit of 16 Exbibytes -- 17.18B Gigabytes -- should hold us a while!

I am hoping it will keep a more nexus line than LG but then again I might be just dreaming. New Note would be an instant by if I didn't have the nexus 10.

They already have pics of the nexus 5 and a 3d rendering. You should check them out. The phone is a. Little plain. They got rid of the glass back and went with that rubbery plastic which is better durability i guess but not as good looking. They also got a bigger screen then nexus 4 with a smaller frame. :sly:

I look at my friends at university with iphone 5s' they've had for >2 years and they work like they're brand new. Is that the case with android phones? I recently just bought a samsung galaxy s7 and then canceled the order because of my realisation that the price was ridiculous. What I am asking is that if I opted for the s6 now, will the lack of updates (as its older) reduce the life of the phone? Or does it not matter - a new s6 will last just as long as an s7?
I feel that any phone should work decently for atleast 2 years from its release date given that it has decent specs. After 2 years, the device usually starts to slow down. And this slowing down is inevitable.
This slow down happens because of all the software updates your apps gets. As apps introduces new features, it often requires more resources from the device. The weaker the specs are, the harder it is for the phone to keep up with the software updates.
If you only plan to use 2-3 apps on your smartphone and keep it in a condition similar to when you bought it (no root, no custom roms or anything like that), it would perform great. I have seen my parents take very good care of their old phones and they still work great!
So to answer your question, do you need the lastest one?
No, you just need to ask yourself how long do you plan to stick with the phone you buy.
With both s6 and s7 you should be able to use them for 3 years easily from their release date. So with s7 you got about 3 years and s6 you got about 2 years. After that who knows how much resource hungry would the new version of android or apps would be.
In my opinion, you could get OnePlus 3 and that too should last you for around 2.5 - 3 years with ease! That phone has 6 gigs of ram with snapdragon 820 and its half the price of s7 !!
Phones can easily last 3 to 4 years; the battery is going to be the first to go. Like the other poster stated, it's usually app updates and software updates that slow a phone down over time.
If you buy any upper tier phone made in the past 2 years, however, you'll be set for at least 3.
Keep in mind, slowdowns and problems with performance over time really only show when playing really demanding games. If you're just browsing or taking pictures or are on Facebook or Instagram the phone really won't ever be a problem.
But yea, I would highly suggest checking out models on Swappa if you're OK with buying used. I just grabbed a Nexus 6 (2014 release) from there this weekend. Tons of phones are in mint condition at steep discounts.
