New LTE owner... Lagging? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Ok guys... coming over from the OG Evo 4G... I love this phone so far. I've had it for about 2 days. Everything is great, except it seems that I'm getting some serious lag when coming out of applications or interwebs using the home key. I get 2 or 3 seconds of "loading" and then it fills in. They phone is stock with very little added at this point. I did get the new OTA update right when I activated, so not sure if its an issue with that or not. Is anyone else getting this lag? With the power this phone has, I feel there should be zero lag when doing simple activities... 2 or 3 seconds isn't acceptable. Tried a factory reset... Didn't improve. Any suggestions????

You're experiencing multitasking issues with sense reloads. Rooting can really help with that sort of thing.
Its really too bad you took that OTA, You won't be able to get full S-OFF.
If you aren't the rooting type, changing launchers can help

Root it and flash rom htc totally failed with multitasking

Thanks for the responses guys... I have rooted/Rom'd my last 2 phones heavily (OG Droid, OG Evo) and am fairly comfortable with it. I guess I just wanted to enjoy this one stock for a while. After running ICS and JB Roms on my old EVO for the last 6 months... It is nice to have everything working at the same time (Netflix, Camera etc...). Plus, Rom'ing seems a little iffy on this Evo so far with reports of actual bricking (yes, I know.. usually user error) and borking Google Wallet. I am decent at this stuff, but I do make my share of mistakes. And seeing as how I bought this phone off eBay (not due for an upgrade), I can't afford to break it. Do you guys think this issue is being addressed by HTC? I hope so......

Clear wallet settings before flashing just to be sure if you're worried about that.
Unlock and root your phone, follow the 1.15 flashing instructions and get cm10, it will feel like a new phone. Well worth any risk (which IMO is low following instructions).

I think something might be wrong with your phone. We've taken a dive into these phones the last couple of weeks. I got an EVO Lte first. It came with the newest update. So I rooted, but no s-off, of course. Running stock ROM. Runs great. No complaints, except the multi-tasking, of course. No lags, though.
MIL decided to move into a smartphone and got the same phone a few days ago, with my help. Left it completely stock and worked on it extensively loading apps, configuring it, etc. I notice zero difference between the phones. Same performance, no lag on either one, etc.
P.S. Wife picked up an S3 on Saturday. I'm in charge of setting it up, too. I expected to be realy wowwed by it. But after a couple of days of playing with it, I think I like the Evo better. I like both phones, but I think I made the right choice for me. It would be nice if HTC was as developer friendly as Samsung, though.

Update: Factory reset fixed the lag... it was acting up still right after I did it, which is when I posted the thread. But, after letting it settle for a day or so, its fine. Awesomeness restored. Thanks for the help though, and when the modding bug hits me, I know where to go.

Sometimes after just flashing a new ROM its a good idea to factory reset first, it gets tested for the device intended and released for others but an image is basically a snapshot of the ROM and everything in it, when you factory restore a new ROM, you really start fresh

I hope you have better luck than I did. The lag came back. So far, minus the last few things that aren't working properly, CM10 is the way to go. It's like a whole new phone. No Lag, smooth as butter, no more waiting for Sense to load, just a much better all around experience. Thanks to Toast and Deck, incredible work!

Still running like a champ... I think the phone was just confused with activation, setup and the evil AirRave that hates all my phones... Factory reset seems to have worked. Trying to hold off on root/rom for now...

Problems were real for me

So I was very disappointed at first.
The browser was slow and disappeared often. The phone got hot. The battery was lasting like four hours. I was getting roaming warnings. Capacitive buttons wouldn't light up unless it was pitch black. Felt less than snappy. Launcher would take time to load up.
Basically all the problems most people were having except the wiffi bouncing.
The screen wasn't set quite right.
I took it back and now I have no problems except one. Now it does WiFi bounce.
Gonna take this one back too.
If your phone seems like its having problems most likely it is. Take it back.
FYI my experience.
I'll report back once I have chance to get to the sprint store again.
Cool phone but yes the two I have had are buggy.
I wish was text wrapping would get fixed too. Very annoying.
I know many are tired of problem threads but there are problems.
Just.out of.curiosty where did you get your phones at?
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
try setting wifi to 2.4 ghz, that made mine more stable. I don't thinka new phone is going to solve that problem, so I would keep the one you got and wait for HTC to fix
saying you know there are too many problem threads and making another one yourself does not make it ok.
Make it ok? Just letting people know man. Not trying be a downer. I want the thing to work is all. Chill.
I got both phones at a sprint corporate store. The guy told me he has seen all the same issues.
Now this phone has great battery life. Awesome really.
But now I'm missing calls, going to maps from the browser completely blacks out the screen. Goes to nothing.
Face it. The phone is buggy.
I think HTC probably held the phone up in customs after realizing they pushed to quick. Who knows.
Buggy. Face it.
I am going to try a third one.
Oh and changing the WiFi to any setting didn't work.
Best of luck.
The wifi issue seems to be software related...the One X (our Evo's sister phone) got an OTA update this evening to address several wifi issues so I'm guessing that ours will be getting one soon too.

why is the problem with the person making a thread, instead of the company who put out a problematic device.
Guys not trying to be a Debbie downer. I and many people have to live with a very promising device for a while. The developers quite frankly and hopefully will go nuts with the thing and make me and many kinda geeky. That's the fun.
But I need a solid device. I bought it to help me work better and embrace the technology that makes that happen.
I said on a different post the EVO 4g with mikg 3.11 for me was wonderful. That phone and Rom did my thing.
This is an EVO and branded as one. Don't settle and if you go for a brand like ne expect nothing less.
I had the first moto droid and that phone gave me amazing info without even touching it. I'm a fan. EVO helped me with work and music. Well slacker always made me nuts but that's slacker.
I don't mind a few minor bugs but hold the EVO to high standards.
I that's all we want.
Like I said developers will make it sing. I'm sure of it.

Should I keep my note and root it or not?

I have been using the HTC evo on sprint for 2 years. My girlfriend saw the note and fell in love, and I was intrigued by the huge screen, since I use my phone more as a smartphone and less as an actual phone. So we went to ATT and bought a couple and are giving them a try, but haven't cancelled our sprint yet. She seems to like it a lot, haven't heard a complaint yet.
Out of the box, I was impressed with the screen for sure. Didn't liek the way the default browser handled zooming/word wrap on a lot of web pages, but a new browser fixed that. Battery life was good, but not great compared to what I was used to on some roms on my rooted evo. I am trying to learn to use the S-pen more. I haven't been blown away by the Note, but my Evo sure does seem small now.
I have been itching to root this thing and start installing some roms, but obviously wanted to wait until I was sure I was keeping it.
A couple questions, if I stay with ATT, I will be porting my sprint number. Will rooting the phone or installing a rom cause any issues with the porting of my old number? The Evo was super easy to root and flash roms, and also super easy to unroot in case it ever needed service, which it hasn't yet. Is it just as easy to root/unroot the Note? More concerned about the unrootingt, I am sure I can figure out the root process from the stickies, but I didn't see anything for unrooting, maybe I missed it. Just want to make sure I can get the phone serviced if I need to.
Thanks!

Hey so, I recently switched from Verizon to AT&T. I kept my old number and rooted my note within three days of getting it. Haven't experienced any issues whatsoever and I think you will be blown away once you get hip deep into the Roms that are available. The only problem that I have come across is that I can't stop flashing new roms now.
But, it is super easy, really great guides on here and on Youtube if you're the visual type. I don't think you'll regret it. My only advice is just reading through the threads (or at least the last few pages) before flashing just to see the experiences of others and what to expect before you give it the go ahead. The rooting guides have guides toward the bottom on how to unroot and that's on youtube too.
Hope that helped.

I had rooted my evo and flashed so many roms I can't even count. So it's not that rooting/flashing scares me, and I am sure I can figure it out with the guides just fine. I was more worried about voiding my warranty or whatever. More so with this phone then with my evo for some reason.
There is an Odin image somewhere on these forums that will get you back to stock. It's pretty easy to do.
So far, this phone is the best phone I've ever had.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717
yes you can restore your phone to stock if needed (warranty is only reason I can think of). You can do it w/your PC and the stock ROM file as you can see in one of the forum stickies, I think the development forum.
Just get on one of the latest ICS leaked ROMS...I highly recommend the OnlyOne ROM/MOD since it is the based on the latest leak with a few key mods/etc added. Runs gREAt. And has some Samsung Galaxy III add-ons ported (i.e. new Touchwiz UI, S Note, S Voice, tethering). The OTHER ROMS are also solid and have more theming and custom stuff.
Get a PC then use it to Root, install CWM and then install your ROM of choice.
I like staying on Stock stuff and tried to on my Note for a few weeks but there were too many benefits to rooting, etc.
Have fun. Again...the ICS Leaked ROMS are sweet.
The Note, and most Samsung phones for that matter, are among the hardest to hard brick and some of the easiest to return back to stock as a result. Samsung phones are also very easy to root. The Note is no exception. As others have stated, we have an ODIN package to bring you back from everything but a hard brick. And you're not likely to do that so long as you stay on these forums and not the n7000's. That's pretty much the only way people have bricked their devices beyond saving. And even then you can send a hard brick in to some site and save it with JTAG repairs for $50, which is much cheaper than a replacement phone.
Also, in addition to the stock ODIN package, we have a flash counter reset, do ATT will have no indication you ripped whatsoever. People have returned their Note with the flash counter tripped, and had no issues, but it doesn't hurt to be careful. By using the ODIN package and flash counter reset, your warranty is again valid, so you really have nothing to worry about.

Best thing I've done was root and flash this yesterday. The stock experience was driving me crazy (came from a flashed atrix). I say go for it and don't look back. This phone was pretty easy to root and flash.

Alright you all have convinced me. Off to read the root stickies/guide.
This is the method I want, correct? Looks like the other one isn't meant for custom roms, just to gain root access and leaves the flash counter at 0.

No need to worry about the flash counter. There's an easy method to reset it and go back completely stock.
My suggestion: flash cwm, root, flash one of the awesome ics roms, and worry about going back to stock later. Totally worth it.
Flapjaxx'a ROM is what I'm currently running and it's up there for the smoothest and best Android experience I've seen through 3 Android phones and many other friends' phones. It's seriously like iOS/WP7 smooth for me. And great battery life. Wouldn't trade my Note for a damn thing. =].

Either is fine. I use non touch because it's what I used on my captivate and infuse and I'm used to it, it has never failed me. I've never used touch, but apparently it's just as stable. It's really a matter of preference add far as I'm concerned and whether you like using the volume and power buttons or your screen.

New to the Evo LTE Community

I finally retired my Evo OG and loved it so much I had to go with it's successor. My Evo's LCD screen went out literally when I got home from the sprint store (talk about great timing). First of all RIP Evo OG. You are still the best phone I have ever owned. I'm gonna miss you.
Anyway, I am wondering what's the first things I should do with my new Evo LTE? Should I root right away? Any good rom suggestions? Kernels? My old phone was rooted since about the time I first bought it. I was running Deck's rom for about the last 8 months. Thanks for any advice.
My phone's hardware version is 0003 and software version 1.13.651.1 710RD. I haven't had a chance to check the Hboot and S-off stuff yet.

root... then s-off.. flash mean rom or cm10 if u like aosp roms.. i like sense myself.. i say mean rom the best sense and aosp would be cm10 for sure!
Sell it due to radio issues...
Or second.. Make sure you update to the latest baseband, pri, and all the pieces that go with it. Do not make the mistake of just updating the modem. Especially with all the issues the modem has now. Hopefully they will come out with some sort of fix but many of us are doubtful. Then from there test different roms to see what works for you.
Loved this phone for everything but uh the phone and data part. Getting a note 2 or s3 in a week and handing the evo down.

I may be of the minority, but I have had VERY FEW issues with my phone. It has worked well from the beginning and all but one issue has been resolved (contacts lagging, but not as bad for me as some report). I am not rooted and don't ever plan to be. I use Nova Launcher Prime, which took care for Sense reloads, and Chomp for texting as it syncs Facebook avitars for free. I absolutely love this phone. Good luck to you with yours!

If you're familiar with android at all you'll immediately see how broke the multitasking is. But AOSP ROMs fix that. I've read zeppelinroxs mod fixes it for sense. I'm starting its the s4 processor, cuz all I use is AOSP, and when I relaunch root explorer from recent button, root explorer always start from base level, not last open level.
hurled from my AOKP'd Evo LTE. Enjoy.
Thanks Digilbur for that info. I was actually having all sorts of trouble with data speeds for the past few days so I was starting to worry that the radio was gonna be a problem, but turns out I was worrying for nothing because sprint was having an unusual outage in my area. He said it would be fixed on the 26th so hopefully everything will be running smooth by then. I went ahead and took the OTA I received, prior to knowing about the outage, hoping it would fix my radios.
Coming from my last phone where I had to squeeze every last drop of battery life out of it, I'm loving how much longer this one lasts. I rarely played games on my OG because my phone would die, now I can spend a bunch of time playing 9 innings baseball 2013 (GO A'S!).
Anyway when I do root, which will likely be soon, I will have to try Mean rom, Flex rom, and CM10. I have been partial to AOSP roms because I like to use go launcher ex anyway, but never really liked cyanogen mod due to too some problems that are probably fixed. My main thing is without question battery life followed by functionality (everything working or working better than in stock). I'm hoping to have the multitasking fixed for sure and I'm still curious as to if there is any truth to the camera app or camera itself functioning better in sense?
Sense uses image sense with is basically post (denoise, color correction) but the camera is still leaps and bounds ahead of aosp camera in terms of functionality. The libs are supposed to have been ported but the chromatic aberration is terrible in aosp
Fleck's stock with goodies is a good ROM. Basically stock with a few features like quick toggles added. True multitasking as well but I haven't used it awhile. Cm10 is always nice.

The Amaze Won!

Thanks to most of you for your help.
The Amaze has been replaced with an S3.
I spent way to many hours on that phone and with that being my 3rd HTC phone issue I will not be purchasing one again.
On a plus note it is for sale with a ballistic case/powerskin and galaxy S2 for $375.
Phone works fine but just cannot see recocery or bootloader.

I gave up on this phone. But since all my latests phones were HTC I feel a bit orfan now...
I'm looking to move to a different brand but I can't stop thinking of HTC thinking of getting any other brand makes me feel like a traitor...
I've been lucky with the previous ones but this one is a different game, may be they come out with a good upgrade option from this one.

Congrats. I hope you are happy with your new phone. I've had none of the troubles that seem to plague the Amaze for some people on the Forum. I put the NRG ROM on first thing and have been happy ever since. It did take some tweaking to get the power profile right so it lasts all day.
I also have never had any real issues with this phone. I've used NRG for most of the last year. Combined with Faux kernels, my battery issues have been tamed. There has had a couple blips, to be expected when fooling around with non stock ROMS. Overall it's been very stable and trouble free.
I recently have been using Stock Deodexed, bloat removed, and faux's latest kernel. It definitely feels like the quickest Sense 3.6 Rom I've used, is very stable without any discernible lag, PLUS EVERYTHING WORKS!
I believe folks create more problems when flashing by not completely wiping, even for a restore. I'm even considering a second Amaze(or Sensation) for my wife. She has been clambering her phone is to slow.
HTC better get back to the removable battery and micro sd card if they want to reclaim a flagship handsets status.
Thirded! Also been running Faux and NRG and have had 0 issues with my phone. Love it and it's stability!

I was in the same situation but just one day the phone decided to start acting out and since thenthere is no rom, no kernel that works properly (not even stock ruu anymore) I guess I have hardware issues.
I don't even care about battery lasting since I have threeof them but it's really annoying when you try to pick up a call and you can't because the darn screen would not turn on.

Yeah, that sounds like a hardware issue. I saw on thread that fixed this by simply wiping the proximity sensor with a cloth. Probably not your issue, but did you try cleaning that?

I'm interested in the ROM you describe, but I don't see exactly which one it is in the development forum. Can you post a link?
Sure

Yes that was one of the first things I tried.
I've been doing different tests and it's still random but it's more frequent if I have it in my pocket and then I pull it out so I started to suspect it was related to service signal so I tried turning the screen on without the back cover installed and yes it seems worse that way but sometimes just to throw me off it does work.
I cannot find a solid pattern as to figure out what the problem is.
The only thing I can think of is just before this whole mess started, I was hooked with Hill climb racing game and playing it for quite a bit of time and remember feeling the phone getting pretty warm (more than I ever felt before) so I don't know if something blew up.

continuing on with the Rezound?...

I've had the Rezound for some time now and am actually on my 3rd replacement(issues before with overheating & signal drops). Anyway, the current Rezound I've had for awhile & never bothered unlocking/rooting thinking it'd eventually encounter problems like my previous ones. I finally decided I'd like to tinker with some ROMs but been having a hell of a time getting a recovery to stick/work properly & getting S-OFF(It updated to the most recent ICS not too long ago).
It's now almost 1AM(been at it since around 9PM)... read lot's of guides from multiple forums, tried multiple procedures, etc... & so far only got the phone unlocked and a delightful **TAMPERED*** msg in HBOOT. - although the phone still boots up & functions just fine. I've been having that urge to "throw in the towel" & even as is, someone's offered me $200 for the phone. If I sell it, I can pick up either a GS3 for an extra $100 or a RAZR MAXX HD for an extra $75. I remember the original RAZR's screen bothered my eyes and didn't like the G Nexus I had briefly.
I do have a bit of an attachment to this Rezound but this S-OFF/root bit is really pissing me off now. What would you guys do?
[EDIT] A bit of a glitch there getting Aman Ra loaded but it's done now(still displays tampered in hboot but oh well, it's working anyway...) & have NeoMAX 2.0 installed (still S-ON). Last time I tried tinkering with this phone they only had temp root available. Going to play around with it for awhile now and see how things go. ^_^
S-Off is definitely not mandatory. I have been flashing roms for over a year on my rezound and I am s-on. If you have unlocked bootloader and root your set. You just occasionally need your pc to push the boot.img.
Tampered just means you have a custom recovery installed. Like im_high_tech said, you can flash kernels when you're s-on. If you need help with that, let us know.

If frustration about the ***TAMPERED*** thing is what is making you think of changing phones, don't worry about that, it's supposed to say that. As shrike mentioned, that's normal. It just means you have a custom recovery on it.
I would keep the Rezzy if you don't want to spend any more money. It's a great phone imho.

I am right there with you. The Rezound is great and thanks to the devs just keeps getting better. It is hard for me to justify losing my unlimited data for new phone when this one does all I need it to....and more.

Just so you know, you'll only lose your unlimited data if you renew/upgrade. You can buy a phone from a 3rd party and switch out whenever you want & maintain your unlimited.
I have a Galaxy S3 now that I'm using as my primary(and unlimited is still there). The Rezound I've held onto though as a backup & use it as my media player.
He speaks the truth. I had a TBolt and my wife had the Rezound. She hated the proximity issue so we switched (score for me). When I checked with Big Red, they confirmed that I would not lose my unlimited data, so I switched and haven't looked back
