Relevant info for new users - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I have written a lengthy guide (i use that loosely) called Don't Panic for people to read before attempting to unlock, root, or flash their phone. I meant for it to be in general but in my confusion it was mistakenly posted in Q&A. Please take the time to read it before, during, or after any of these procedures, its a lot to read but it is very valuable information

Thanks! I'm sure it will be very helpfull..

Great guide. I wish that people had to pass a test with questions based off of it to be able to post in the development sections.

Updated with the most common troubleshooting scenarios new users are likely to encounter

Updated with more common and not so common issues

good stuff, I could have used this last week when I was sweating through rooting my 1 day old evo lte :good: thx!

Added another variation of boot loop to troubleshooting section
Expanded MD5 section with information on how to use it

Added an overview pertaining HTC Dev Unlock procedure

Thanks for the Don't Panic thread. Just what the doctor ordered!!!
Sent from my LTEVO via XDA Premium

Added yet even more information. CPU Governors and I/O Schedulers
Another rare(read odd) and very specific troubleshooting scenario added
Updated once more lol
Yep its another update

Wish HTC would take a note out of your book with the updates.
With so many different versions of hboot and S-ON/s-off, it needs clarification. Previous phones used to be more localized and generalized as well. This one is spread out and easy to mess up.
Ask me about my ability to annoy complete strangers!

They started off so strong with their support of android....what happened?
Added a section explaining NAND Memory and Partitions
Guide is now a sticky

[Q] 2.6.35.7 kernel with no other description and I need to find an unsecure one....

I have a AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 I777 with a stock kernel version of 2.6.35.7 and that's exactly how its listed on my phone. I'm trying to root my phone and cannot for the life of me find the unsecure kernel. Could someone please assist me in finding the proper kernel for rooting my phone? Thank you for looking...
Please, please read the stickies in all the sgs2 forums before posting.

There is not a million stickies in the i777 section. If you can't read the few that there are then you should stay stock or get an iPhone.

Sorry guys I'm just not very good at looking for something I dont quite understand. Ive googled numerous times and all I get are results with 2.6.35.7 followed by a million numbers and symbols after the kernel number and mine doesn't have that. It literally just says "2.6.35.7" in my phone and thats where im getting lost. I cant find an unsecure kernel code for my particular kernel.
How about the stickies in the general section? Geez this is really starting to piss me off as it wasn't that bad before people have to learn to read before tbey start screwing with their phone, that's what i did with this phone before i even got it so i knew exactly what to do when i got the phone. No one wants to spoon feed people who don't even attempt to read the stickies. There are atleast 2 stickies that tell you how to root your phone that i found within seconds. Case in point, READ AND SEARCH BEFORE POSTING

Your kernel version has F all to do with reading the damn stickies within the i777 forum. Jesus.

Forget abouty flashing your phone for now. Just leave it stock. After all, the I777 is an awsome phone running stock right out of the box.
Now start reading. Follow the forums. Study all the stickies like others have suggested. When you fully understand how things fit together, what things are called, etc. then you can safely flash your phone to one of the great firmwares offered here.
I felt bad...no, not really...but here...took a whole 5 seconds to find this.....

There is a total of 17 stickies in all the sgs2 forums combined. So please just take the time to at least read the ones that pertain to your problem. I.E. rooting.

Especially when his question is answered in the first post of one of them which is fairly prominently labeled.
However, I agree, if you couldn't even find the clearly labeled sticky on rooting, or creepy's general flashing guide, you need to leave your phone stock. You WILL screw up your phone in a way that is difficult to recover if you can't even follow his guide, and I'd say you have a very good chance of being one of the few people who manages to hardbrick an I777.
Creepyncrawly is correct. I was very overwhelmed when I first found this forum. While there are only a few stickies many are very deep in the number of posts to read through. Patience is a virtue here for sure. It takes a lot of time to read through a few stickies that are 400 - 1000 posts deep but it's worth it as you can skim a large number of them for important keywords and highlights.
I was converted to 2.3.6 (stock) and needed a fix for the battery issue. But as recommended I read every sticky (many times over) until I started getting a better grasp of the rooting concept. I was an iPhone user that jailbroke it many times over and felt that process seemed so much easier. After rooting my phone a couple times now and using a couple different kernels and flashing ICScrewD a couple times I'm comfortable with saying it's just as easy.
I just redid my phone yesterday morning (1) because I felt it wasn't running optimally and (2) because I wanted to redo the process for the sake of learning. In no time flat I was back up and customizing my screens again with a fresh ICScrewD install.
CnC and Entropy among many others have done great work here and are very informative. I greatly appreciate the work they've put in here and a few other forum sites.

Development Thread???

I was just catching up on the thread in the general section that says root has been achieved, and then the last post says that you can find the info in the development section? I don't see a development section for our phone yet, are they referring to the sprint models development thread? I'm apparently missing something here... When I first bookmarked our forum there was a development section, but I don't see it there anymore?
I think you need at least 10 quality posts to view the development thread. I've lurked here for a few years with not much to add since I'm no dev. It's time for me to give back where I can.
I believe they made all sections (General, themes, q&a and development) and opened them up together. After a few post in the General you should see it because it's definitely there

[CM9 RC1] How to install

Hi guys I haven't found a topic yet where to find an installation guide for the first release candidate of CM9
I'm new to roms installation and I was looking for a detailed guide or someone that explain me how to...
I'm running a stock kernel, a stock rooted rom (ics 4.0.3 xwlp7) and I haven't installed the Cwm I have it in the internal storage memory and I have to flash it every time I need to use it
That's all
My questions are:
I need a particular kernel? How to change it?
I need Cwm installed or I can leave it like it is now?
I need doing or I can just flash it from the device?
Thanks

Well, I think if you can't figure out the answers using the search function, and opening a thread for this in the original development section it would be better not to install CM9...
Have you even tried to Google that? C'mon, there are so many guides out there! Don't be that lazy! Oh, and next time write in the right section.

Read and figure it out on your own. If you don't, you're going to be dependent on other people the whole time you do anything to your device. It's your device, do some research on your own.

Typing in all caps is not helping you get your point across.
This is a community, yes. But it's supposed to be a community of developers and hackers. Or at the very least, people who come here wanting to research and learn. But since everyone and their mother now joins and expects to have information spoon-fed to them, it's become a community, as you said, of "users"; i.e. people who simply use.
My point - the information you were seeking could have been found with a search. Rule #1 of the forum rules is:
1. Search before posting.
Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news.

Hell, the instructions for installing CM9 are - surprise, surprise, in the CM9 thread. The same thread that had links to download it. You clearly were able to find it to download it, so did you just skip over the instructions on how to flash?
Give this a read.
Writing in caps doesn't solve anything, you were told what you should have been told, not to discourage you but to save you bricking your phone.
If you can't read few stickies, can't read few threads, that's what you will get.
Read them, than ask and you will be surprised how many will actually help you.
i was not doing controversy, caps was not intended (working i have to use it)
I was just saying that if someone needs help you could at least direct it in the right direction, instead of always criticizing that's all I know how to use the "search" but obviously I did not have any clear answers to my questions that's why I opened a topic in hopes of getting answers. I've had no answers, I had to assume and tests.
fortunally everything went well
Its suppose to be a community of android developers (note: The name of this website!!!)
No one is required to help another person, they choose to help. Some people were nice enough to post guides, faq and etc. The majority of all questions or problems asked has an answer or solution posted. It is the responsibility of the user to search and read them.
Any new users should read the stickies FIRST before posting. Every one of your questions has answers in the stickies. If people dont bother reading guides and faqs, they have a higher chance of ruining their phone.
As you said, there was a guide, you followed it and solved it yourself. Why didnt you simply search for it, BEFORE you posted this.

OG Rom

Guys,
My apologies if this is in the wrong spot, but I'm couldn't find information in the development forum. What does the Optimus G Rom look like? (I think the only one available is "the base") Does it look like stock? Is there any functionality that is seriously lacking? (i.e. LTE, camera, etc.)
Thanks!
This is very much the wrong spot. This is a general thread, not the Q&A thread. There is also a thread for the ROM itself, so you can direct all questions there. You shouldn't have to even ask the question because it's detailed in the ROMs description and throughout the thread. Better yet, install the rom and find out!

As Murasakiii suggested, go to the thread in Android Development. There's a detailed list of changes and a number of screen shots through out the thread. For the most part, Nottach has done a great job getting rid of AT&T crapware and adding enhancements that are very meaningful improvements on stock.

the best phone ever
Thanks! I looked through that page but didn't find a) a concise list of missing functionality or b) screenshots. Apparently I looked over both? Anyways, apologies for the incorrect post.
It's kind of a list-as-he-goes thing throughout the thread. Pretty much everything works to my understanding except his mods/changes are a bit buggy if you flash wrong.
A good amount of people have no problems, and a good amount do. It's a completely stock rom, so it'll look just like when you got it, except if you use the changes he's listed in the roms log.
Using the same "tone" as my first response, just in case anyone wants to nag over 2 days about how I type.

New kitkat sticky???

Is it that time for a moderator to post a 4.4 related sticky including all the updated methods and apps ( SELinux enabled twrp for one) I just figured it would reduce a lot of redundant posts. Even though I agree people should read the @#$%ing OP's in every thread... Maybe a sticky would get their attention since OP's apparently aren't? Just a suggestion. Im probably just rambling..

Hell yeah.. I personally wouldn't consider myself qualified to be writing stickies, as I'm no expert at this stuff. But then again I guess all you have to do is read OP’s. The devs do a pretty good job explaining how to install these ROMs safely and properly. I've been installing ROMs no problem since I joined xda. No prior knowledge of coding and/or Linux at all, just a mere power-user of Windows OS. But when I read some of these posts my jaw drops... It makes me feel like an all knowing god of installing ROMs.. Which I'm far from.. Lol. I was inspired to make the initial suggestion of a sticky after reading the 100,000th (sic) post asking which twrp to use for 4.4 KitKat. But it would be in vain as the non researched curiosity of fellow xda posters will continue..
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk
Actually I think a sticky is a great idea.. I just got this device and when trying to decide what ROM to get, most of the OP didn't specify exactly how to install the ROM.
I tried 1 but it didn't work in twrp, I looked it up on Google and found a post about philz CWM. So I ended up going with cm11 nightly, but yeah..so if anyone out there can't figure out how to install the new roms (SElinux based), use philz cwm. (And don't forget fastboot flash boot boot.img if s-on)
I personally think people need to start going all the way with s-off if they are going to flash custom ROMs. The current recommended method is rumrunner I believe.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk
That will change soon though!! As 4.3 OTA update is coming out soon for us.. Actually... If a sticky was compiled im sure it would be best to wait after the 4.3 update.. As that is obviously the end of the line of updates for the glorious life the Jewel has had since being released..
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk
I wouldn't mind putting something together. I was thinking of something that included both TWRP & CWM recovery options, along with links to all the current KK builds for our device.
The biggest issue I've seen is that users don't read (or don't understand) that you specifically have to use a recovery that is SE-Linux enabled, and that the standard TWRP recovery available from Goo or TWRP's site won't work.
