Hey im new to the forum and love the work you guys do here. I rooted my Photon so far have wifi tether and all the goodies like that up and running, however im interested in flashing a rom now.. BUT with Ice Cream Sandwhich (hopefully) coming soon to the Photon im a bit unsure.. Can i somehow restore my phone back to stock and do an ota or however they send (if they do) the ICS update for the photon? Assuming i do end up flashing a rom, and if i can restore it, how difficult would it be..? Also what would you guys advise for battery life, the Homebase or Alien rom? Its the biggest thing im looking for from flashing a rom really. I just dont want to go through and flash a rom on my phone then a few weeks later see ICS get sent out and i somehow cant update until a dev creates a rom of it. Thanks and sorry for nooby questions but ive been digging here for a while trying to find the answer to these. Thanks!!
You can restore to stock with an SBF flash/RSD Lite - easy enough.
The roms, you should try both and see which best suits your need and use.
Don't accept an OTA - it may ruin out root exploit.
I'm on home base ROM.v1.5 with update 4.2. Not much difference in battery life between the two ROM's and not much improvement that I have seen from stock.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216143 - you'll need to go here if you haven't unlocked the bootloader and flashed a custom recovery. It'll also answer your question about returning back to stock.
On a side note, has anyone tried the Star Wars ROM, i think people have forgotten about that one.
I never did try that one. Does it have any support still?

Agreed... Make sure you follow the steps carefully because this phone is much easier to soft brick than others. I have done it a couple times.
Also, I agree with the other posters, unless you really just wanna try it it's not all that worth it yet. No real big gains in performance or battery life yet

you should try with stock rom for a while, start reading about flashing roms and you will be ready to flash
I know it's annoying to have to wait, but it's better to do it, than wind up with a potentially ruined device.

Dude, if You just got Your phone and don't know what rom to choose at first learn the device. You don't need neither custom rom nor root. These are just addons for great device. It's common that people don't use their device but play with it and it ends badly. You assumed that any rom is good apart from stock but stock rom is very good. Also You don't need to root it instantly. Some say that "phone is unusable in non rooted state" - it's bull s**t. Apps that require root are designed to meet very specific needs, not for regular users. It's because android is veery advanced and allow many things without administrator privileges (this is not an iphone !). Remember - people think that root is "something everyone should do at once" - no it's not, and it's very dangerous in hands of unexperienced user. One false move with root privileges and You will start learning many things about flashing at once just to recover your device. Also remember that this is not another "application privilege". App with root privs is capable of wiping entire system in a seconds including IMEI data etc.
It's really friendly advice - leave Your phone as it is for now, learn how it works, install some apps and read as much as You can. Then You will know what your device is capable of and what can be achieved by rooting / flashing kernels or roms. Flashing without a reason, just for fun is stupid and ends with full pants.

...another thing worth to read about. What do You mean by supported ? It's supported by it's designers.
For SGS2 we have custom ROMs like CheckROM - modified Samsung officials, added some tweaks, apps, removed less usable apps. And ROMs like MIUI or CyanogenMod - they are AOSP (android open source project) and have little in common with Samsung official firmware, ex. no TouchWiz so some Samsung specific apps will not work on them. According to Wikipedia - MIUI is based on CM7.1 sources.
MIUI is not "ported", it's prepared for many devices including SGS2.
Don't do *anything* until you've done a *lot* of reading. Enjoy the phone. It's a fantastic device simply running stock firmware.
Once you're comfortable enough to be able to do it in your sleep (And not before. If you have to ask questions about this, you're not ready. It is an absolutely simple process), root your phone using a CFRoot kernel.
This will enable you to remove/freeze all the crap telcos/Samsung put on the phone and all the other joyful things that come with having a rooted phone. And do a lot more reading. Only this time read the threads devoted to the various roms/kernels. Read other users experiences with these. The features. Pluses. Downsides. Ask specific questions about them in these threads.
From there, you can make an informed decision about a rom/kernel combo to try. Believe me, if you do a couple of weeks of reading/research before you do anything, you'll reap the rewards.
If you jump in the deep end without understanding what you're doing, you could end up with a soft brick that might take you a few days to fix at best. Or returning the phone to Samsung /potentially having to pay to have it repaired out of your own pocket at worst.
Just a few things to consider
I just updated my vibrant from stock froyo to stock gb via kies factory upgrade.
Here are specifics as is: firmware 2.3.6 baseband t959VUVKJ6 kernel 2.6.35.7-t959VUVKJ6-CL694130 build GINGERBREAD.VUVKJ6
I went through hell today to root and unlock the sim of this phone as its my first day ever messing with android phones.
I was looking at the wiki for the t-959 roms, the "stable" one is barebones and the "cutting edge" one is CyanogenMod 7.2. Barebones pretty much hints you lose functionality and though the other is apparently great, it isn't "stable" and here and there you read a post here and there of someone having some kind of trouble with a feature that just might have worked with the factory rom.
I don't want to sacrifice factory functionality for a phone that looks good or is too modern for the vibrant to handle, I want a rom where I will have no issues whatsoever with things like mms, camera, ics, gps, wifi / 3g sip w & w/o bluetooth (w sipdroid), tethering, installing to sd, that has a promise of performing well for a good while and ideally for the rest of the life of the phone without having to possibly upgrade again.
It seems my best bet is to either just leave my phone as is or go with barebones and install apps as NEEDED, please help, you learn alot in the forum but also you run across soo many contradictions, alternatives and options that its too confusing and time consuming, really, I just want to do this once, quick and get it over with, bam bam bam, done and hopefully never have to mess with it again until it gets smashed or I loose it.
oh another thing, though this phone is rooted unless I insert an SD I can't browse ANY files, either via its ui or via usb... I have a captivate where I can see both sd internal and external via both ui and usb, I'm assuming its a rom issue that once I upgrade to any rom that will be solved.
Well cm7.2 is based on gingerbread which you said you have. It is pretty stable except for possible GPS and 911 issues. Cm9 is based on ICS, its also pretty stable but same possible issues. CM10 is based on jellybean, its in alpha build but considering its fairly stable except for same two issues. As far as looking at files, you need root browser or root explore. Just DL from market. I'm running Der Teufel's Hellybean cm10 ROM. Its really nice. But you said you want to set and forget....ICZen is a good ICS ROM. Its pretty stable and a lot more up to date than gingerbread.

Seeing that this is your first experience with Android, I would say that you need to make sure that you know what you are doing first before you start flashing anything. I am going to save you some serious heartache in just one minute.
First, Kies is notorious for HardBricking phones. Don't use it. You can use Odin or Heimdall to flash back to "stock" whenever you need to. Always good to do when flashing ROMs to have a clean base to start with. Google them and you will find what you need.
And now, here is where I am going to save you tons of trouble and the painstaking issues that WILL lie in your future. When I say that you need to know what you are doing before you start flashing, here is why. YOU DO NOT HAVE A VIBRANT, so don't flash any Vibrant ROMs to your phone. First we never got an official GB ROM, only Froyo. Second the builds that you put up there are to the SHG-T959V. That is the 4g version. Those ROMs won't work in the Vibrant and our ROMs won't work on theirs. Fortunately there is a forum for those and you will find whatever you need in there.
Good luck and be careful and above all read, read, read.
Hey wood, this is the second person I have seen stating they had stock GB on a vibrant. I thought it was weird. I figure if you are not sure what phone you have or what OS your running you shouldn't try to install custom ROM! Thanks for saving that guy!

THe wiki for this with files neded seems to be mostly dead.
I took my tmo g s 4g and upated it with kies mini. it now has t959vuvkj6-cl694130 and I cannot find how to root but have been reading for daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaays
Searching forums is cumbersome at best.
Does anyone know where accurate and fresh data is on how to root and use cm10 or any other help for non experts?
I guess I have to use a pc because there is crap info for mac

Thanks, unfortunately super one click is reported as a virus and also doesn't work on mac.
Personally, I would skip any ICS roms entirely. The risk of getting the EU bug (dead internal memory) isn't worth it. Go straight to JB.

Been using Smartlauncher Pro as my launcher as well, but it doesn't give me the customization I want. I dig the UI though, it's minimalist just the way I like.
I've been keeping my eye out for ROM's I can try out, and I think I want to try Cynogen for the S4. However, I am terrified of destroying my investment. I've read horror stories of flashes gone wrong... I don't want to permanently brick my device.
Is there anyone here who can hold my hand while I install my ROM? I seriously have no idea what I'm doing, instructions or no.
...I sound so pathetic right now.

Do you have a custom recovery installed like TWRP or CWM? If you do all you need to do is download the rom (I put them on ext sd)....and gapps if your flashing cyanogen, boot into recovery, make a backup (I put this on my ext sd card too), wipe, flash rom, flash gapps and reboot.

Hi!
The first thing you need to find out is what build number you have. This will tell you if you are able to root and install recovery in order to put a new rom on the phone. Do NOT update your phone by the over the air update that is currently available! To find your build number go to settings: the more tab: about phone, then scroll down. If you have JDQ39.I545VRUAME7 then you are in the same boat as many of us and accidently did the upgrade which at this moment has no way to root. If you haven't done the upgrade than you need to find one of the many threads on here that will walk you through the process.
Hope this helps some, there are others on here that can give you a much more detailed walkthrough of how to root if you are on the correct older build.
The best advice I can give is to read the entire original post (OP) for the ROM you like, and as much of the thread as you can. 9 times out of 10 when someone has a problem with the ROM it's been discussed, and is often listed in the OP. Usually there are step by step instructions on installing the ROM. I believe there's a general ROM flashing guide in this forum somewhere as well.

JDQ39.I545VRUAMDK is the version I have. I froze the updater using Titanium a couple weeks ago... And my phone is already rooted.

That's good! You haven't been updated which means you can still flash ROMs. Are you familiar with both types of ROMs, TouchWiz and AOSP? CyanogenMod is an AOSP ROM, which will be completely different from what you're running right now, TouchWiz. You're rooted, but have you installed a custom recovery? You need one to flash ROM's, either TWRP or CWM. You can also make a nandroid backup in recovery, and if anything goes wrong, you can go back to exactly how you are now. Definitely read the OP of the ROM thread multiple times and follow the flashing instructions correctly.

If anything goes wrong with the flash in the next step, go to restore and you'll be back to how you are now.
Did you download the ROM to your phone along with Gapps? For AOSP Roms you need a separate gapps package, which is Google apps.

I just started the download for gapps package using Goomanager.
I checked out the Cyanogenmod site, apparently there's no stable versions for the VZW GS4?
Oh wells, flash anyway! That's what I do!
Worst case scenario, you have to use Odin to get back to stock. I used to keep a nandroid on my PC for just in case scenarios as well. One time on my GNex I flashed something really bad and had to adb pull everything off my phone, wipe the whole thing, and start over.

Yeah you'll have to download a nightly, I don't think there are any stable versions out yet. Are you downloading it directly on your phone? Or on your PC?

If I install a ROM, do I really have to factory reset before that? If yes, why? and Can I back up all application data easly?
Can I remove the TouchWiz home and get the google's stock one?
What can "brick" my phone?
How big danger risk does it have?

1) Yes. Because previous rom installations can often leave behind stuff that won't play nice with your new rom. Always do a wipe when moving from a TW rom to an AOSP rom & vice versa, always do a wipe when going from one Android version to another. Always do a wipe if the flashing instructions for a particular rom say do a wipe.
Yes, backup your application data with Titanium Backup Pro (but not system apps/data). You can also use Ti to backup call logs & SMS's.
2) If you mean launchers, you can use whatever launchers are compatible with the rom you're wanting to use. This will vary; look/ask in the thread devoted to the rom.
3) Any flash (either Odin or CWM) has the potential to brick your phone. If you
ensure you know what you're doing before you do it, the risk for any individual flash is very very small. You cannot completely remove this risk.
4) I answered this in 3.
5) If you're asking 'is it worth it (rooting) ?, you should be first asking yourself the question 'Why do I want to root my phone ?' If you can't answer that question, the risks involved may not be worth it, because that shows you don't really know what you're doing at this point. If you really can't answer the question or you find all the guides/tutorials on here too hard, I'd suggest you leave your phone stock. 'Because it's cool' isn't really much of an answer (there's nothing cool about it; technically speaking, it's rather boring).
Now then, if you're up for a lot of reading & learning, there are threads stickied near the top of Q&A & also an index of guides/tutorials stickied near the top of General you should be reading.

2) I don't mean launchers (avaivable from google play) really, Those drain battery faster (I think). I want to remove TouchWiz and get the google's stock launcher, style, everything.

1) You can use the free version as well, although there are missing features in there.
2) If you want to get rid of Touchwiz, use a non-Samsung-based rom, or have a look for Chameleon rom.

1) clockworkmod is not used to over clock your ROM.....that is controlled by a custom kernel.

3) Titanium Backup is one of the most useful apps that anybody running a rooted phone can buy......TOTALLY worth the pocket change to get it......
once you're rooted and running your 1st cusROM, you'll get bitten by the modding bug very quickly and then TiBu will come into its own......

modding bug? And, I should root, install a custom rom, and then I can/need to wipe?
If you use your linked method to root, you'll have a 'temporary' CWM that some say it'd be best NOT to use for wiping......
You need to do things in this order.....
1) root your phone with the method in your link.
2) install a custom kernel zip using the temporary CWM installed at stage 1.
3) use the permanent CWM that will be installed at stage 2 to do the wipes.(VERY important when moving from stock to custom).
4) use CWM to flash your chosen ROM.
You can bypass steps 1 & 2 by simply using Odin to directly flash the custom kernel.......the choice is yours.....
The most popular custom kernels are siyah or dorimanx.....it shouldn't matter too much which one you choose as it'll be overwritten when you flash the ROM.....flashing the kernel is just a 'means to an end'......
This might be my S2 or it might be my W, but it's definitely CM...

Just to make sure I got it: I do that everything on the same time on recovery mode without booting my phone? (does it even matter)

Is a Custom "OS" a kernel? Witch of those did you take?

Don't worry about asking questions........it's better to ask and get it right than to NOT ask and turn your phone into a paperweight. I don't mind answering questions if you're prepared to search, read and learn as well.
The kernel can be installed separately to the OS......while most custom ROMs include a kernel with the package, the kernel in itself is a separate part of the software.....in simple terms, the kernel is what allows the hardware to talk to the OS......it's what makes the phone/OS do what you want when you touch the screen.
With regards to the link in your last post, having read some of the comments, there seems to be some 'worry' about the compatibility of the kernel download that the author provides for use. Another point to think about.......
XDA is the primary source for information and tools in the Android community. Most other websites get their information here, and some don't display/use it correctly.....some time ago, I saw a number of threads where people said they'd followed the instructions on another website and ended up with bricked phones.......
There are guides 'stickeyed' at the top of the various S2 sections here on XDA that tell you EVERYTHING you need to know......take a look and find out the info you need.....right here.....

ok, so the chameleon OS that Donnie Sins told about has a custom kernel? Do you know better custom roms than chameleon?

Yes.... Chameleon (the same as any other custom ROM has a custom kernel) it won't be as heavily customized as some are.....chameleon ROM is a 'hybrid' ROM..... that is to say it is a stock based ROM with custom tweaks and modifications included........
Some custom kernels will allow things like under volting and overclocking and a whole host of other 'non standard' functions.....
This might be my S2 or it might be my W, but it's definitely CM...

Well, I don't really know the flexibility of the other rooting method. But, this method, I've read some post that it does not work with some stock rom.
Hellooo...
Should I also install gapps?
What's the thing to overclock?
Can someone link a rooting method with odin if it's more stable?
