Is Straight Talk a good at&t Alternative?Other Carriers? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Im on t-mobile and this constant data drops and crappy signal in my house and everywhere u go is intolerable. I really don't wanna sign a contract but heard.good things about straight Talk. So i need advice or current user input on this matter. Or recommend me to something worth checking out. Thank you.

StaightTalk seems pretty good for at&t users who want to change carriers with minimum fuss. Your at&t note won't need any rom or modem flashing. But, you will have to unlock it and manually input the APN settings.

It runs on AT&T's HSPA network. So it's the same as that. You won't get LTE though. That currently only for AT&T.

Just order a sim card online...I'm currently on ST n its got fast data speeds n good coverage

If you have an AT&T phone and plan on using ST AT&T then you don't need to unlock your phone! I'm using the GNote on straight talk AT&T without it unlocked.

3g? No.

That's something you should ask T-Mobile about. They have a website and everything

Um, what unbranded phone works with tmo-us 3g bands? You have to be able to receive the correct frequencies in order to get 3g, and tmo-us uses non-worldly 3g bands, unlike att.
So, while dumb, it's the reality of the situation.

Are you sure? I heard it differently.
My family possibly be going to Verizon, and I look around. Most if not all the info I seen so far said no.
If there is a way, I want to know. Since I have the SGS2.
Any unlocked phone can be used on any network so yeah you can use it on Verizon

Yes and no, because Verizon uses cdma and not gsm and your phone is gsm based you will only be able to use voice and 2G Data, 3G will not work with your phone.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Guys seriously? Verizon doesn't use SIM cards in order to use a phone on their network you have to use a Verizon branded phone! Sorry no unlocked phones! Sheesh feeding him wrong information could waste him a lot of money!

I'm thinking of going to Straight Talk from AT&T. So you are using the AT&T sim you got from Straight Talk, right? Not AT&T? Does the phone have to be unlocked? It's my understanding it does not. Is everything exactly the same as on AT&T service? (That might be a dumb question.)
Damn I want straight talk now.

U buy a straight talk sim from the online store. The phone has to be be an att phone or a world phone like a galaxy nexus or international note. Everything is the exact same as att IMHO. Just no lte.

Me too T-Mobile speeds suck. But is expected. But I have 5GB UNLIMITED and am no where near the brink. I need my 4g speeds I only use my phablet for data and skype to make calls.

Because it doesnt have the TMO radio band for TMO's HSPA+ (wait I forget this is the international section, are you talking about TMO US?) If It's TMO US that is why. the international doesnt have TMO's AWS band for their HSPA + so you will be stuck on 2G data speeds
Because the international S3 can only get 2g speeds on T-Mobile.
you can get hspa+ if you use it on at&t or if you are in one of the areas where T-Mobile has refarmed the 1900mhz frequency for 3g but I think I saw someone mention here yesterday that there are only 5 areas so far but they should be more widespread in the next few months.

No.
Its a hardware thing, not a software thing.
You have three choices, wait for 1900mhz to be refarmed to 3g in your area, change to at&t or put up with 2g speeds.
Simple as that really.

I can only imagine how you feel being stuck with that constantly, when I lose signal with my carrier (3 Ireland) it roams onto vodafone Ireland and I only get 2g speeds then, its unbearably slow.
When I was in America a few months back I got a tmo sim in new Orleans and had 3g speeds but when I went about 5 hours north I was roaming on at&t and they don't let you use data at all when roaming, a-holes!

Yeah I'm using stock ROM rooted with stock modem. I'm pretty sure T-Mobile is using 1900mhz for LTE and ATT uses 1700. Really digging the late though. Download and upload isn't a big concern but the ping has dropped to about half of what it was. Very happy with T-Mobile. I think the lte will spread quickly like their 4G did.

T-Mobile doesn't use 1900Mhz for LTE, only AWS 1700Mhz.
Regardless the i717 doesn't support LTE over 1900Mhz.

Oh wow this is awesome!!!! Could you please get into your ServiceMode (dial *#0011#) and take a screenshot of your ServiceMode?
Did you change any of your APN settings in order to access LTE or you're running default epc.tmobile.com ?
Thanks!
I'll post a picture of it in service mode around 5pm. I'm at work right now and LTE isnt coming through the building very well. Also to answer your APN question I am indeed running the stock epc.tmobile.com. also thanks for clearing up the frequency bands ok both networks I wasn't quite sure.

I like the techie stuff. For instance, in that screenshot I can see that they're using Band 4 (AWS 1700/2100Mhz), LTE bandwidth is 5Mhz which tells me that the maximum possible download/upload speeds are 37mbps down / 12mbps up in that particular market, EARFCN 2175 means that they're using C block of the AWS spectrum which is 10Mhz slice (5Mhz used for downlink, and 5mhz for uplink).
Most consumers don't care about this kinda stuff, but I do
Thanks again!
