Best ROM for use with Lapdock? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got one of those 20$ lapdocks from Radioshack and was wondering what are the best ROMs with webtop? Right now I'm using Jokersax' CM9 (but considering switching to epinter's CM10) and just doing HDMI mirroring. I'd prefer to stick with my current ROM if there is some kind of webtop like thing or maybe Ubuntu or Debian that I can install on it. I have an 8GB microSD card and 5 gigs of internal storage left so space is not an issue.

Hi.
You have to install a Gingerbread Blur ROM to have Webtop. Not compatible with any CM.
Only a tablet UI mod (not Ubuntu) with CM10 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1876790
Personnaly I have Nottachtrix 1.3.1 with WebTopMod, running a full Squeeze up-to-date Debian.
I tested Ubuntop, but the Jaunty Ubuntu is too old and support end since october 2010...

If my Atrix is with ICS/JB. I still can use lapdock features? Just webtop not will work in ICS/JB ROM?

Yes, you should just have mirroring via HDMI to the display. Resolution might not match the screen and looks a little aliased though. GB based rom have webtop and that match the resolution of the screen and makes it look much better.

I've used jokersax CM9 without issue except for that aliasing issue.

So, is there a way to run a full Linux distro without a Blur ROM?
Also, how is your phone's performance on Nottachtrix? What kind of Quadrant scores does it get?

I have 1GHz Faux kernel 026b, so the results are not the best, I prefer longer battery than high performance.
Results are: Total: 2494. CPU: 2748, Mem: 2689, IO: 4605, 2D: 265, 3D: 2162
(Result is 2819 with 1.3GHz Faux kernel)

define "full".
There is a "way" to run a full distro, but you'll be VNCing into it, since the terminal doesn't support a graphical output., anyways, it works alright, video is wonky though, so I wouldn't recommend that, but even openoffice works.

HI, this post is a bit old now so im sure things have changed a bit, im hoping to get my atrix rooted this week(by my cousin) and want the right rom put on it, im a complete noob and all the threads that ive read about with the lapdock, talk about changing things.
In your experience which rom just works, Id like to be able to use maps, camera and video camera aswell as lapdock.
Any advice is appreciated as ive got headache with trying to read up on all this.
cheers
Joe

I see that the last post to this thread (before mine) is dated 3 years ago and the questions in it went unanswered, so I am doubtful that my question(s) will be seen or answered as well, but here goes.
This is my first post to these forums, so keep that in mind if I make any mistakes, or break any rules. I own 3 Motorola Atrix 4G phones in various states of working, plus the Lapdock, which is IMO brilliant and the main reason for me searching out this phone and buying 2 replacement phones after my first Atrix 4G LCD screen stopped working. In fact, I bought the Lapdock to use with my Raspberry Pi first, then decided I wanted the cell phone to use with the Lapdock. I still like the Atrix 4G, even though it replaced my iPhone (3S I think), which I lost (or it was stolen). My question(s) is/are the same as the OP and title of this thread, now that it is Sept. of 2015, what is the best ROM version and what is the latest version of Android I can use on my Atrix 4G, while still being able to use the Lapdock? I don't care if it means using the Webtop application, or a different Linux for ARM/Android desktop, but I don't want to lose any functionality of the stock cell phone. In fact, I want as much functionality as possible, so on occasions when I need to use the phone and lapdock combination as a temporary replacement for a full computer, I can do so, with reasonable limitations. The main functions I need/want in my Atrix 4G cell phone are: calling (obviously), GPS navigation, calendar, contacts, calculator, camera, taking notes for reminders, and searching the web for locations of things I need to buy, or places I need to go occasionally. I prefer Firefox as my web browser of choice, but can do with any good browser, if Firefox is not available with the best ROM & Android version choice for the Atrix 4G & lapdock combination.
I hope that some members here are still using the Atrix 4G, even though it is an old phone now, and they can give me their recommendations. I bought all 3 of my Atrix 4G phones unlocked and have zero experience at modifying or replacing ROM images on cell phones, but I am willing to learn how to do it, after I know what I will be aiming for with some recommendations. I also have almost zero experience with using Linux, but have checked it out a few times over the last 15+/- years.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks for the quick reply b088yj.
Since I am new to all of this, can you give me more info on what the "leak version" is and where I can find it? I don't want to assume I can figure out what you mean by "leak version", and end up with results that don't work, or take a chance of bricking my phone.
Is this "leak version" using the Webtop, or some other desktop GUI for when the phone is plugged into the Lapdock? I have no preference to keeping or replacing the Webtop with something else, so long as it "just works", and provides the same functionality, including all features on the phone working (like the finger print reader, sound, camera, etc.).
Also, what steps are needed to install it (if you can just provide me with some links to where I can find the specific information I need to read, I can figure it out for myself, but listing the specific steps you took to install the "leak version" on your Atrix 4G would be really helpful, plus if there is anything needed before, during, or after you install the "leak version" to make it all just WORK).
For example: To install the "leak version" you need to install X number of things on your Atrix 4G, asdfg + hjkl; + zxcvb in the order listed in the step-by-step instructions below.
Step 1: Backup your existing cell phone system, data and contacts using ???
Step 2: Wipe the system using ???
Step 3: Go here (link) and download file/app/utility/etc. abc.xyz
Step 4: Unzip and run, or install app/utility, or ???, on your cell phone/computer to transfer to your cell phone.
Step 5: Using a shell window, enter the following commands [email protected]#$%^&
Step 6: Repeat Steps 3 through 5 for file/app/utility/etc. 2 and 3, which you can find here (link) and here (link).
Step 7: Get on your knees and pray while rebooting your cell phone to see if it all worked
Like I wrote earlier, I have no idea what I need to do, but do have some common sense and can follow clearly written directions, if the person providing them to me does not assume that I know some part of the process and they leave out something they think is obvious and generally known to all cell phone hackers (which I am not to be considered in any shape, way, or fashion).
Thanks again,
David
aka AmigaDave
Edit: I see from your signature, you are using a LG-E980, does that mean that you no longer use your Atrix 4G?

I don't think it's much faster than gingerblur. A little bit but not that much.

I have noticed the faster speeds. iv gone from gingerblur 4.5 to the new alien rom and I think switching between screens is a lot snappier. The battery life isnt quite as good but I have only had the rom installed for a day so it presumably will improve
Hi peeps
Bump, I'm also interested in upgrading to Alien vers. 4.
I currently have gingerblur 3.5 and been away from the Atrix scene for a long time, so I'm a little outdated.
Could someone quickly sum up the steps to upgrade to Alien 4?
Thank you
the main difference is that gingerBLUR is a puesdo rom, it has mods and a theme to look like gingerbread. The gingerbread rom is actually the real deal. so pretty much what you should be comparing is froyo to gingerbread and see if there are 'must haves' that you want

Yeah, I'd be interested in this as well. Repartition the internal storage. I don't need or use webtop and I'd much rather have that space for apps.
This will probably require the unlocked bootloader, but even with that, directions haven't been posted on how to do this.
I worked a bit on adapting the FireRat partition mods, but haven't really had time to finish it up.
EDIT:
I should say that the reason it won't work at the moment is because I think we need some bootimg work- which isn't my best area, I really don't have a best area... anyways-
From what I can gather, we need to figure out how to do this:
You can boot a kernel with a modified partition table using one of two methods;
the "-c" parameter to fastboot allows you to add kernel parameters. This is good for booting RECOVERY images and applying custom layouts.
The second method is to build the custom layout into your boot.img or recovery.img.
This can be done using the "--cmdline" parameter to mkbootimg.

First. ZOMBIES!!! (haven't slept in going on 38hrs so bear with me)
The repartition is more headache than it's worth. The chance of bricking and I mean replace phone level of bricking, is very high. The only thing else I can figure is to format the osh partition and make it readable as storage for CWM/TWRP backups or fastboot accessible in case of recovery failure. This won't recover the space used but would at least repurpose it.
I'm still in the process of working on a number of personal projects as well as trying to get some issues with the next ROM and Webtop release fixed so everything is in a "No ETA's" status.
Oh and I need to update the All Things MoPho thread on multiple sites.

You don't need to emulate as Android=ARMLinux with a java frontend. This is demonstrated by the number of (insert disto here) on your phone projects here on xda and elsewhere. They are really running Linux on top of Linux.
How high of a resolution are you looking for? With tweaks, folks have been able to get 1080 output out of Webtop however 1366x768 really is it's sweet spot external output.
If by full desktop environment you mean a full version of KDE or Gnome, then no. I was able to get Gnome crammed into webtop but it required that I build it off device and remove everything not Gnome. It left no room for anything else and would have forced users to use webtop2sd as it had less than 50MB free space after cleaning the partition. It was actually more limited than webtop. To help put Webtop in a category here how it stands up against actual distros.
Webtop= Lubuntu running Avant instead of the built-in LXDE and most preinstalled apps removed.
Webtop+= Webtop with LXDE as its default so Lubuntu lite.
Ubuntop= Xubuntu lite with a ton of common apps installed.

It's a Webtop replacement and not a modification like Ubuntop. Unless Gentoo has changed, there's a ton of command line usage involved. This will scare off most linux users and almost all linux noobs. If I can get Ubuntop fixed and Gentoo ported it should cover just about all Webtop users. I'm waiting for a response back from Gendol to cut down on porting time.

[Q] What is the currently stablest ROM?

As much as I love reading through threads on XDA, I just dont have much time reading every Dev thread here. I will be getting an Atrix in the coming days to replace my Dell Streak. The reason why I cannot read through all the thread is because Ive been on and off with like 4 different droids and just cant waste so much time reading through all the threads, Ive already burnt all the time I had to waste.
So If anyone could just give the name of the ROM which they think is the most stable at this moment, I would be very greatful. As I need a stable ROM to fall back on when I try all the new ones coming out.
Thanks in advance!

Atrix allows you to dock the phone to a lapdock which transform it into something like a netbook.
the lapdock has a 11.6" screen, keyboard, 2 USB ports and doubles as an extended battery.

It's working great for me. I mean, I have little requirements. Facebook, Twitter, Browser, XDA app, camera (not video), wifi, 3g.. they're all working great for me. It's stable for my needs. You can give it a try. If you don't like it, you can always use Neutrino
Just remember that not all apps would work. Chrome, for example, is forever crashing on the Atrix due to the lag of hardware acceleration.

I flashed CM7 to my Atrix 4G earlier this week and it is stable. I spent many hours reconfiguring and testing after the change to ensure the phone will be stable for work. I think it will be and do not plan to make any more major changes until the end of the year unless something catastrophic happens.
The phone has not crashed and boots 5x faster than stock (30s - 35s from button down). Bluetooth connects within one or two seconds compared to 5s - 10s before. Wifi performance has remained unchanged, sometime up to 30s to fix but I have only tried on my old, home router. GPS lock is 10s - 15s indoors, maybe a slight performance increase. Camera loads quick. No hesitation when typing (after the last upgrade I was seeing a lot of that).

I'd say CM7.2 last stable release.
Better then any other ROM i tried, and i tried them all

No, Neutrino is CM7 based and webtop does not exist on any such roms (or any ICS roms).
Furthermore , the old Webtop is likely to become permanently dead. We will have to figure out how to use the tablet mode based webtop in the future.

"Best" is subjective. The most popular Blur-based ROM still seems to be NottachTrix; unfortunately, the latest version (1.3.1) is also the last version, as Nottach no longer supports it (he no longer owns an Atrix). There are a few other Blur-based ROMs that seem to still be in active development, but I haven't really been following them (I use CM7.2).

CM10 Jellybean, lapdock webtop and epinter's fantastic CM10

Hi all, i havent bit the bullet yet with this rooting game as the atrix as been plenty fast enough for me box standard, but since getting the lapdock and finding it so painfully slow that I wont use it, I started googling my options, so here i am as it seems that rooting is the answer!
Ive been reading about Jellybean and it sounds like its been designed to work with accessories like the lapdock, that lead me to read the thread about the CM10 rom that epinter is building which sounds brilliant.
I cant ask the Q on that thread because im a noob so can someone tell me if epinters cm10 works with the lapdock or would i need to add things.
thanks

Thanks for the replies guys but just to clarify, your both saying -
The lapdock works?
Well of course it works, however much like CM9 it's only going to mirror the video output from the phone right now. However the auto tablet switch is still broken (from what it sounds like, I'm not on CM10 yet.) and Moto's WebTop is obviously still broken as well.
Personally I'm waiting for a version of Paranoid Android based on CM10. Maybe when that hits I can finally switch modes without having to reboot.

I think i could live with that as the browser on the lapdock is only useable if i use it through the phone rather than its own firefox.
So i would just be losing out on screen resolution.
Does JB still have the bug where on the lapdock you get 10 FPS and on the phone its nice and smooth?
Actually I'm getting decent FPS with Paranoid Android. It's still not great but it's WAY better than it was. The start screen for Need for Speed: Shift and it's pretty good. Galaxy on Fire 2 THD works like I expect it to as well. My guess is that it's been fixed in Joker's latest CM9's and yeah CM10 as well.
I doubt it will be perfect until Moto releases ICS officially though (and hopefully they can use something out of that to help with CM10 too).

I doubt my lapdock would work if they didn't. Also I've tried the cable with a DVI adapter and that works fine, so yeah.
If you meant CM10, I have no clue yet but I'm getting tired of waiting for a CM10 based parandroid (which is what I'm going to call it for short from now on, because I think it's clever).
I've flashed cm10 and will give my lapdock a try when its charged. The is some mention of changes today but I haven't read the change log.

I just flashed it, didn't even bother with the new gapps yet though. Came over from Parandorid 1.6 and all I did was wiped the caches.
So far no issues but I absolutely HATE the app picker. It was much easier with ICS where you picked it and checked always use if you wanted to. Now you have to pick it and select either just once or always (so two taps instead of one).
Loud sound lapdock
On [ROM] CM10 (JellyBean) for Atrix - 20120729 very loud lapdock sound in mirror mode. What I can do on it?
What do you mean loud? It functions normally for me. Maybe turn down the volume? Sorry you're going to need to be more specific as to what the problem is.

Very loud minimum volume (level 1).
I tried with both the phone speaker and the stereo system I plug it into and I could not replicate the issue on my end, sorry.
You did check all the volume levels right?
Posting a logcat might help someone. I'd mention the issue in the main thread.

So just to make it clear. You dont have webtop with the flashed rom?
Is there an ICS ROM with working webtop yet?
I only use the Atrix with the lapdock in GB. Is there an ICS ROM with proper support or do I have to wait for the official ICS?
NO ONE has webtop with JB, let alone ICS. If they do they're *******s for hiding it from the rest of us.
The devs are working on it. Official ICS *SHOULD* bring it when it hits (if it hits, which I'm sure it's going to it's just taking forever).
What I'd really like to see is companies release all the source code for their "dead" devices. But it will probably be a cold day on Mercury when that happens.
I don't even have a webtop like interface either, nor will I until paranoid android comes out with a modified CM10 of their own. My hope is then that I can switch DPI without having to reboot.

So I'll just stick with 2.3.4 stock, my lapdock working and wait patiently for ICS.

[Q] Still kicking the Atrix 4g

i've had quite alot of phones since my atrix 4g...i keep coming back to this cool little gadget!I've successfully updated to the nottachatrix rom today, and was immediately impressed!I'm curious to know what (in your opinion) is the best for atrix 4g (at&t) with webtop(or similar ubuntop...whatever gets the dock working) as of this date?I'm more interested in the daily user builds...but there is alot to go through,so i thought i would ask for a little guidance...i'm up for some tinkering!

let me clarify a bit...i use this lapdock from time to time, but i'm thinking i could use it alot more if i could update it.I use the google suite of apps such as sheets,drive,etc... i also like using chromecast on my note 4...but maybe the trusty atrix can handle that too?
I recommend ICSROM 1.4.6 that gives you the most functionality and ICS supported apps. Also, Webtop 3.0 is more stable and no resets of phone after using it.
Then update the kernel with the last 3.1 kernel from this Gdrive.
kernel-atrics
You will also want to update the ExtDispServiceD.apk from that Gdrive location as well.

Ty!looks promising!going to start reading on that tomorrow!
I wouldn't be using this if my LG G3 didn't take a face plant to a brick, but here we are. So I tried the ROM and kernel you recommended because I've been out of the Atrix game for a minute and have no idea what I'm doing (not that I did back then either). The ROM works pretty well except for the WiFi and it refuses to realize that it has superuser installed? There was ICSROM-v1.4.6.zip and ICSROM-v146_Rebuild.zip but you didn't mention the rebuild, so I figured you meant the first one and went with that.
Now as to the Kernel, you mentioned the last one. I figured you meant the last ICS one and not KK (last file in the list) so I tried that. However at boot the screen got a little shaky, then REALLY SHAKY, and then everything went black. So I wiped everything and reinstalled 1.4.6 and that's where I'm at now.
Please advise.
