Warranty doesn't cover crack by speaker? - TouchPad General

So I called hp on Saturday, and told him about the crack by my speaker which is due to faulty designs I guess. And he told me hp changed the warranty and they no longer cover this? Is this true? He told me it would cost around $300 to fix! Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

Thank you, I figured he was lying. I asked to speak to a supervisor and told me one was not there. I'm gonna give it another go.

I have had two repaired in the last six weeks for exactly that problem under the HP warranty. If they give you any more s××t .PM me and I will give the repair # ,copy of confirmation emails and the repair statement that I received on there return.

i would suggest not sending it in unless it is very bad. i've read that there is a good chance you wont get the same device back. for example, they'll accept your touchpad, pull one from the refurb pile, and send that to you instead. the other devices may or may not be worse (with other problems) than the one you sent in to fix.

The two that I sent back were picked up and returned in 1 week repaired with new back covers and were definitely not refurb's . Although one that may have had a beer spilt over it and was not repairable was replaced with a refurb that I have never had a problem with .
So don't believe everything you read .

maybe it depends on where you are located. i'm in america and have read lots of horror stories, maybe things are different/better in the uk
here are some fine examples of previous experiences i've read about:

i'd really only consider sending it in if it was something that i could not tolerate.

Thanks to both you guys, and it's not really that bad, but my warranty is about to run out. That's why I was thinking of sending it in. I'll call them tomorrow morning and see what happens. I'll let you guys know, and once again, thanks a million!

As I said I haven't had any problems with mine, and what I would say I in my personal experience is once they start it doesn't get better, ie with mine I had a very small crack by one speaker and three months later it turned into 3 both speaker's and by the USB jack. My daughters only had one but that was sent back straight away.
Anyway good luck and if you need proof that they do cover it don't hesitate to pm me .

Don't forget to wipe!

We sent ours in because we are at the end of our warranty too. Just don't ever mention Android OS:
Make a backup
Copy it off to your PC along with anything else of value
ACMEuninstall
webOS security wipe, to remove all traces of warranty revoking un-authorized software.
Like that was the cause of your cracks. If you let your warranty run out, your out of luck. Then it doesn't matter, save the $300 and get a tablet with native JB!

Called hp and again a no go. They guy said they stopped covering the crack about two months ago. Am I out of luck here? And check your pm sstar

I got arranged an RMA on mine on mid July, finally picked up the start of August and then got it back around the 19th August. IT came back messed up, they replaced the back (yay), however it can't pick up a wifi signal unless you're within 1m of the router (I tested with 3 routers and WebOS and Android), you can't even use WebOS without a wifi connection, anyway I presume some idiot at HP/Palm forgot to connect the wifi antenna, not sure what else they did, but it crashed in WebOS settings and it sometimes failed to start up showing a battery with a question mark.
It was finally collected yesterday so coming up on two months since this mess started, and not sure how long it will take to be fixed, they said 10 days but it took two weeks last time, but I know that HP have now outsourced it in the UK at least and they don't have spare parts and can't order them, just get random shipments and you have to hope the part comes or you have to keep waiting.
So different to my case replacement last October which took about 10 days in total. No wonder HP had to pull out the market, I also emailed the CEO's of HP UK and then after no reply CEO of HP USA after I got an unusable touchpad sent back after a month, neither even bothered to reply, not even a scripted thanks for your email. Really bad service in my opinion.

I have speaker cracks and my warranty is up next week. I'm just gonna use a drop a super glue and call it a day.

I would contact Palm using the live chat. They helped me out when I got my first Touchpad which the screen wasn't sitting correctly in the housing. Also the home button LED did not properly light the button. I guess that is what happens when you get a Touchpad from the last batch.
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app

Got it back after 6 days, all they'd done was ran WebOS Doctor on it and sent it back, not fixed anything so still broken and I have to send it off AGAIN. Idiots.

Got it back again today, still not fixed, all they did was another software update, they're claiming wifi works.
It get's lowest signal within metres of the router (I tried 3 routers), when before I sent it off to get the cracks fixed it would get full signal on different floors of the house. For comparrison my laptop next to my touchpad has my network on full signal, and 4 others on medium signal, the touchpad is just mine on low (3m from the router).
They told me to send it back again (4th time) and keep hoping someone will fix it, will be writing a letter to HP UK HQ over the weekend and failing that I think it will have to be legal action.

Has anyone had to send theirs back to HP?

I just sent mine back for the back cover cracking. I got tired of it and figured now would be a good time to do it while we wait for ICS and while we watch the Xron rom become even better. But has anyone else had to send theirs in to HP? Do you get a replacement or the same one back? Is it a refurb? Did they finally fix the issue with the cracking backs so I won't have to send it in again? How long did you have to wait for a new one?
I have sent mine over a month ago. They are really quick with that process. It takes about a week from the day UPS collects it to the delivery back to you. If you are in Europe so they will send it to Hungary to get it fixed. Mine got replaced even though I asked to change only the cracked case. But probably they decided to change the whole thing because I also had dead pixel. You can't say whether the device is refurbished or new but so far didn't have any issues! Good luck waiting and I believe that you might also get another device. But if otherwise let us know. I wonder how many people get theirs replaced and how many get only their cases fixed.
they discussed this on the xron thread. apparently this is a common problem with the case
cracking near the battery door. from that thread they replace with a refurbished unit. you can have it sent before sending your broken one back but it requires credit card information. one guy had his replaced 4 times for cracks.

Crazy. I don't use the tablet enough to justify having them send me one first. Especially right now when we're all still waiting for a big breakthrough for ICS. Seems like I might only be looking at a week and 1/2 max from what some people have said. I'm saddened that some people have had cases with multiple backs with cracks. I thought the HP Touchpad would be designed well and not be another Palm Pre...
are the cracks cause by the hp case or just stress cracks from a poor design?
Anyone having this problem, I read somewhere that if you ask for "advanced exchange" then they will send you the replacement first and if you don't send yours back, they charge your credit card.
Beats not having a tablet for 7-10 business days.

I don't use my tablet enough to justify a hold on my credit card and a replacement. My only regret is that I now have to buy a new screen protector.

tiny crack so far
I was able to land 3 32gb tp's during the first fire sale and I only se a few mm crack at the corner of a speaker on one of them. Could it be certain production batches were more prone to cracks?

Possibly. My girlfriend's isn't doing it but she barely uses it right now until we get Android ported over to it. I'm waiting for ICS to be stable before I do it because she's not technically inclined like I am. Though I bought both on the day of the fire sale.

Haha thanks for that I've been around Xron since Alpha 3 for CM7 came out. I think ICS is going to be a big step forward from GB since they're putting so much time in to it. According to Dalingrin it's mostly done.
Roger that. It will be interesting to see how ICS comes out of the oven for sure . Meanwhile I'm diggin 2.3.7.

Heads up...
The advanced exchange is now a $59 fee. No longer a credit card hold. I just got this info from my chat session of dead external speakers on my 16GB Touchpad (internal HP firesale, August 2011).
At least I'll get the same unit back and it doesn't have case cracks (knock on wood).
YMMV, maybe my chat person was having a bad day.

Blown Earpiece I think

I think my EarPiece is blown. Severe low volume suddenly.
BT and SpeakerPhone works fine.
I have restored a backup from a month ago and it still is very low.
Since it's otherwise perfect and older HBoot I think it would be better to repair myself.
Before I rip it apart is there anything else I can check?
Is there a possible corruption on the Radio Side that the Backup would not have restored.
Has anyone else done this repair?
Thanks

I didn't want to get a Refurb. Which is what you'll likely get. I've read too many horror stories on those.
The part is only $10.00 and it does not look too bad to change.
You only need to go up where he folds the motherboard back before he starts disconnecting screen.

Agreed with this
Its fairly simple to replace the earpiece infact it just sits in a slot and once you put on the board for the front facing camera it makes contact with it. screw it down and your done.
Dont worry about pulling the mother board back, as long as you take out the ribbons connected to the side of it (i cant remember but think theres 4 or 3) pull the mother board back and disconnect the 2 ribbons and a black wire.
Good luck

Yep... this is the problem I have as well... and is the prime example of how HTC quality has been crap for years now. I had this problem in the OG EVO as well. This is another reason why I am making the switch to Samsung as soon as they drop the SGS3 on us.
I had this exact same problem 2 weeks ago. Tried all the software hacks in the book to no avail, it's almost definitely your hardware. Sprint told me I could bring it in and they would replace the part for $35 (I don't have a protection plan). They said it would take them about an hour. HTC said I could send it to them and one of two things would happen: They would crack it open, determine it wasn't my fault, fix it, and mail it back free of charge OR they would crack it open, determine that it WAS my fault and either send it back still broke for $35 (inspection fee) or send it back fixed for "$60+". Either way HTC would have my phone for 6-8 business days. In the end, I bought the part off ebay for $7 and did it myself. It's really not too bad as long as you're careful with the motherboard portion if the disassemble. My speaker works flawlessly now. Good luck!

Terrible RMA Leeson for potential customers

Bought a new TP 64GB from Amazon. Worked for 2 days, then the computer stopped recognizing it. MANY MANY calls to Asus "support" had me jump through all kinds of hoops trying everything to get the thing to work. Finally I ship the TP to Texas at MY expense for RMA. I finally got it back an hour ago UNCHANGED. They never even tested it to see if they fixed it. Now I call and get ANOTHER RMA, and have to send it in again. Never buy another Asus product. Period.
lesson*
Ha! I'm not laughing at you my friend, but just the situation in general. I just got an RMA # for this annoying LCD mura that I have as a result of Asus' crappy displays that they used, but I doubt I'm actually going to use it since the only thing worse than their product design is their RMA process. Judging from the majority of threads on XDA, you should probably just be happy that they didn't break it on you and either blame you for customer-induced damage or just ship you back a broken tablet. Asus sucks.

That was my thinking exactly. The OP states that after 2 days there were problems. Within that short of a time period I would have been going straight back to where it was purchased and asking for a replacement or refund. (online retailer or not).

exactly. they go from a company - Amazon - that is pretty much the gold standard for customer service amongst online retailers where they could have easily dealt with them and had a prime in their hands within a few days to trying to RMA it through Asus when there are a million threads and horror stories already on this board. makes no sense.
the LAST thing you should ever do is try to send it back to the company to fix when you can get a new unit.

This a true story? Why would you get an RMA from Asus when you could have just returned it back to Amazon and got a new one? I've received 5 Prime tablets from Asus RMA department and all of them had issues. If you actually read some of the older posts in here when everyone was RMA'ing their Prime's most people had like an average of 3 RMA returns for one tablet. The RMA process just made it worse.
hate to be one of those "cool story bro" guys, buuuuut this seems to be an exception. haven't seen a bad rma experience posted in at least the last month. sent mine in for a camera and lcd screen mura issue and had it back in hand within 12 days good to go. they've gotten a lot better. also, have you tried using any other computers? if they sent it back and its still not working, have you considered that your computer might be messed up?
anyways, good luck either way! i love my prime and although asus kinda screwed up with some aspects of the tablet, i'm super happy with it. cheers

Yes I checked other computers and the tech support folks had me try that and a bunch of other stuff as well before giving me an RMA. The tech people were fine. I just think they didn't test it before returning to me, or meant to send me a replacement and sent the original; back by mistake. I have been surprised at this experience for I did my homework before deciding to buy the prime and it was rated #1 in most reviews.

Yes I tried all those ideas and the Asus folks had me check all those things as well. The port does work for charging, but is no longer recognized by a computer. It seems to have happened to a number of other primes too because I've seen other descriptions very similar. I put up one post where I asked people who had this issue and sent their prime in to RMA to report what Asus found when they completed the repair, but no one was willing to respond. I was going to report what the problem was when I got mine back but Asus didn't repair it, they just returned it..........
In all honesty, they received mine one week and was fixed and returned by the beginning of the next week. BUT, I can say that they did use some tool to open the case which scratched my freaking paint in some places I guess they figure just be happy we fixed it. In the paper work included in the return box somethings said fixed - void warranty, what does that mean.

Phantom touches.

Just curious if anyone else running cm10 based roms are experiencing the random phantom touches at any degree? I've had it on Mazda's AOKP and CN(A) build, agrabrens cm10, Lens_Flare's Aokp build as well as his PA port. Along with running Vanilla, Mac, and anthrax kernels.
Just thought to maybe try flashing a nand of an ICS backup I have to retest that when I get off work. But it seems it's doing it more and more and I'm thinking it is most likely the digitizer :/ ...
Praying it isn't but its looking that way.
If that is the case, anyone know if that's a component they can swap out at a sprint repair shop?
If not I may have to order one because I need new rear speaker as well, and just do replacement myself.
Side note: it was a hella PITA typing this with cursor randomly jumping around and random keys being pressed.... :sigh:

My Dad's 3d is having the same issue and it makes it impossible to use. I think it's the digitizer, so he's taking it to the Sprint store for them to check. I'll report what they say (if I remember to )

100% stock ICS.
I've been having this issue for a couple months now. Running stock ICS on Sprint. It comes and goes though. Sometimes it will do it for days at a time and then go away for a week. I turned on the development screen tap dot so I can see when its doing it. I usually have to just push the standby button off and back on and it might go away.
I'm going to take it to the Sprint store eventually to get replaced or fixed. I just don't want to get some crap referb when my phone is still in close to new condition with no other issues.
Read this.

Hmm. Never thought about possibility it could be the screen protector?
May try to peel it off and see if problem persists.

Sounds like the digitizer. Same problem I'm having. It's been driving me crazy lol. Im actually taking it to sprint in the morning to get it replaced. Only $35 without insurance so rather than do it myself, I'm having them do it

Well I rushed from work today to make it to Sprint Repair shop by 6... I had already called and asked if they would replace it earlier this afternoon. Once I get there, of course they ask me to duplicate the problem and show them what its doing. And like any and every other thing you do, the moment you go to show someone, you cant replicate it!
My phone was trying to act brand new. The paint app that I installed earlier was totally placing lines all over where I was not touching. Stupid thing worked flawlessly not doing anything wrong. Couldnt get my texts to press random keys like they have been doing for 3 weeks now. XDA app was working fine, when it stays clicking posts and popping up the box to thank, reply etc...
So obviously, without showing any issue, there wasnt anything they could do for me. And just as I knew would freakin happen, the moment I left and started texting on the drive home, low and behold it starts going nuts again. Couldnt get it to do anything for me in the store, but soon as I rounded the corner and saw my house it was phantom touching all over the place. So I was pissed.
I don't know how much longer I can go before I superbowl spike this thing.
UGH!!!
I'm going to have them replace it even if I can't duplicate it in front of them. I KNOW what it's doing and why and like you, its driving me insane. Im not leaving until its replaced. Been dealing with it for weeks

I also called today (well yesterday now) thats how I got the price. I could do it myself but, Im not a patient person and I'd have to restrain myself from trying to rushing so as not to mess it up, so figured it'd be safer 2 let sprint do it. For the amt I pay for service, plus to havr it done, they better do it without a problem. Sure they will, theyre pretty decent where I go

Well good luck and keep me posted. Im probably going to go back tomorrow and see what I can have done. Manus need to start using better hardware. Its not like consumers are going to rush out and buy their latest and greatest phone 6-12 months later when they are under a 2 yr contract anyway, and 95% of people aren't going to pay full price. They will wait for their upgrade period to get the phone at 199...

Will do and yes they do. No most customers won't. I actually bought mine off ebay because upgrade was to far away and still got like 3 months before I can. They should let people upgrade at least once a yr even if theyre on 2yr contract, because when you upgrade, you have to extend your contract another 2yrs anyways or at least a yr. Even if they say you have to take the 2yr contract in order to upgrade a yr early. By the way, good luck on yours tomorrow too, if you go back

So I decided to hop on craigslist. Found one person selling Evo for parts for 50% then another person who needs to sell by tomorrow for 100$ obo. The second looks pretty mint as seller states its been in otter box for entire lifespan.
My question now is, if I was to get the second of the two, could I just swap over my internals to that phone?

Yes you can swap your internal parts. A little advice though if you do that..you may wanna use your back so you have your msid # and serial # incase you ever need it or sell it. I went to sprint today and at 1st the guy said my phone had to be replaced but can't be because it's rooted. Another guy came out and said they had the part but didn't know if they could do it because it's rooted and I told him, yes they can, Ive done it before, as long as it's hardware and not software related so, he said, ok and he replaced my digitizer

Very nice. Free?
I decided to nand back to an ICS sense backup and ran the calibrate on it. Then did fresh install back of cm10.
So far I haven't had any issues, but I'm keeping a close eye in it. If it starts back I guess I'll try a different sprint store for the repair. Hope it goes as smoothly for me. But most all reps I've had to deal with don't wanna help at all.
Did they make you show them it messing up?
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2
No it was $35 if Id of had the ins, itd of been free and as soon as I was walking into the store, it started acting up and soon as the guy unlocked the screen it went crazy. Ive tried do fresh installs and it worked for a short time then back to messing up

Advice on RMA

I've been reading through the RMA pieces and they are long and really don't end with good notes, but does anybody know of an escalation process for the Texas RMA center? I'm on my second go around with them after having the tablet since Feb where now I can't use it for more than 30 minutes without it locking up and / or rebooting and once it starts, it gets progressively worse until it just locks up and reboots at the first boot screen. It's happened both times with the tech support (so they even said it's not working right) even trying to go into the boot loader and doing a reset there and freezing up before I can even navigate over to do it).
Needless to say, the repair status is, "Product repair is in progress.-[WF9] Wait for Customer Confirmation-No Trouble Found". They haven't contacted me yet and really the trouble was found / seen by the tech on the phone. I use it for work non-stop (well, when I have it, back to pen and pencil now and explaining why I'm without it yet again) so I really need it fixed. Anybody have a way to escalate it? I really want it back and working. I loved it when it worked but now I feel that I was sold a defective product and they really don't have a repair department above if something is physically cracked.

Where did you purchase your Prime from? I might consider talking to the retailer, particularly if it was Amazon. I would explain to them the details of your situation and ask if they can do an exchange. You'd be happy to exchange this one for a working one, right?
I'm reasonably happy with my Prime. The features make Apple's product look like a toy. The post-sale support from ASUS, on the other hand, is absolutely horrible! After losing a couple of rubber feet on my dock, I sent a support REQ asking if I could get a set of rubber feet. They wanted me to do an RMA.
It's worth a try, asking your retailer...

Email Hai ([email protected]) he is the technical manager that was listed as a contact on the forums by Gary Key. He is not in Texas, he is in California however I worked with him on 3 separate RMA's for my prime and the guy is great. If you email him with the RMA number I am sure he can offer some assistance.
Hope this helps.
For anyone who has sent their prime in for RMA: do you recommend removing a screen protector before sending it? Will ASUS likely take it off? I have a Skinomi, and could probably get a new one under the lifetime warranty they have (if I have to take it off and it accidentally gets damaged), but if I can leave it on that would be ideal.
Thanks.

I wouldn't use a protector on prime in first place, it has gorilla glass but that's me . It all depends what are they fixing. The cpu or dock? If cpu, take it off and save it.

I sent mine in and got it back fine. Took just about 2 weeks total turn around. I took a bunch of photos of me packing it to prove it was packed. I sent NOTHING but the tablet. Nothing. No case, no SD card, no charger, no GPS dongle, no screen saver, no nothing.
But now, I am over this tablet and seriously don't even use it. Going to likely sell it.

I'm actually sending it in to see if I can get the camera fixed under warranty (even though I'm unlocked...fingers crossed). Then I am probably going to sell it. I figure I'd have better luck selling it with a working camera, so worth a shot to see if they'll fix it.

In case anyone cares, I have some good news for anyone considering an RMA for the camera. Just got mine back after sending it in, and upon first inspection it looks like 1) they replaced the camera module (works now!), and 2) I am still unlocked! I'll report back after trying to install Hairy Wookie Bean (or whatever it's called these days).

So you were able to send it in without paying for repairs? They want to charge me 200 for it....
