So they released the iZombie 5 and - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

8 hours battery life hahahahahahaha
I mean the other specs are a bunch of crap honestly...
People are already saying they aren't impressed which I assume everybody here would not be either...
My curiousity is honest thoughts...Besides the fact that we all hate apple I get that...
But what do you guys think?
It can download up to 100 megabits per second. Single chip, single radio, dynamic antenna, a slide shows. It can switch antenna connections beetween different networks when needed.
This display has 44 percent more color saturation than the iPhone 4S display. “This is the most acfurate display in the industry,” Schiller says. It has integrated touch in the display, which makes it 30 percent thinner. Now, it has ultrafast wireless technology too. “We’ve built in GPRS, Edge, EV-DO, HSPA, HSPA+, DC-HSDPA, and yes LTE,” Schiller says
10:17
All of Apple’s software is being updated to take advantage of this display: Keynote, Pages, Numbers. iLife software too like GarageBand and iMovie and iPhoto.Apps run at the same size as on previous iPhones, with black borders above and below if necessary, if they aren’t optimized for this larger display yet.
10:16
“This display is simply amazing,” says Schiller. They’ve added a fifth row of icons to the home screen — the better for those hundreds of apps you’ve downloaded. The calendar shows more events, email shows more emails, Schiller demonstrates all this with a few slides.
10:14
The iPhone 5 is the thinnest and lightest phone Apple has ever made: 7.6 mm thin, 18 percent thinner than the iPhone 4S and the world’s thinnest smartphone. Its 112 grams, 20 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S. It has a 326 PPI Retina display. The new screen on iPhone 5 is 4 inches, 1136 by 640 pixels with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio. “A phone should feel great in your hand,” Schiller says.

I don't get why people hate. I didn't understand it when I was an iPhone guy.
The iPhone has it's place in society. They're incredibly simple and reliable for people with little knowledge of techy stuff.
That said, they're too simple for me.

Whos hating? They dropped a new phone with old features and an old look...thats facts...!

LOL, you said "we all hate apple".
Anyway, I agree with you that this update is very poor...

They rape their customers as far as releasing phones then adding better features and making them pay $200 again six months later...
Also the fact that they dont allow carriers to fix their phones is dumb because then you have to find an apple store, which sucks...

First, Apple has been releasing new phones every year, not 6 months.
And every single industry does it. Not just cell phones. Computers, tablets, cameras, cars... Everything. It is consumer's choice to decide when to spend.
Carriers carry a multitude of phones. They can't train their employees to fix everything.
At least iPhones have Apple stores to fix them. If my Note broke, I have to find a service center which is alot more inconvenient. If anything, Apple has this the easiest for their users.

you cant argue these facts...I would MUCH rather take my phone back to a manufactures "store", than the 3rd party service centers or send back to the factory option that we are saddled with as Android users..For this, I give Apple kudos for..
And, I agree with an earlier poster, about IBones having their "place" in society for the non techie hordes...You dont sell all those phones that Apple does, unless there is a really strong demand from SOMEONE for them..

Apple ....uh....(sorry, I threw up in my mouth there for a second )...
I guess what gets my goat ...is the level of high mindedness that apple users often have toward the android community in general.
Several people I work with are absolute azzhats about it.
They presume that they hold the greatest level of technology ever created in the palm of their hand, and scoff at any android device.
When in truth, the device is a few years behind the latest device in terms of software advances, and hardware as well.
I guess it might be the denial factor, or maybe the lack of freedom to do anything with the device other than turn it on or off and put a case on it.
Regardless...the latest device is still the same as it always was.
An iPhone, joined at the hip to it's Creator, and ever so badly needing it's users to understand that truth.
Folks can buy and use what they like, but I would "Never " buy a device that had to answer to anyone but me ....g

All that negative talk about the note while admitting:
"The Note hasn’t been released yet, and I haven’t tried it out"
He gives himself away in the last portion of his biased rant:
But I will point out that the iPhone remains, by far, the best-selling smartphone in the world, and it has never deviated from its original dimensions. It’s time for Apple’s competitors to take a lesson from this success and realize that bigger isn’t necessarily better and that a phone’s utility decreases as its screen inflates.

Right, and when the iPhone finally gets a screen size upgrade all these trolls will talk about how great the new size is, how it doesn't feel bulking with little baby hands, how it's not at all awkward to hold up against your head. Christ, they probably shoot a premature load when they find out their new 8" tablet makes phone calls.
I'm currently an iPhone user. Have been since the day they came out, but that will be changing once FedEx knocks on my door on Friday (tomorrow would be even better). I have always loved my iPhone. It has been nearly perfect for what I've needed it to do except in one specific area: Screen size. Sure, I could have made the jump to a 4.x" Android phone but there weren't any phones of that size that I was interested in, and with the push to 4G/LTE there were even less Android devices I was personally felt were captivating to me. What really pushed my decision to leave the iPhone was the release (or the announcement I should say) of the iPhone 4s. Wow! What a disappointment. I didn't find the move from the 3g to the 3gs to be all that spectacular and I certainly wasn't overly awestruck by Siri. Sure, there was some increase in performance but there were no improvements in the area where I wanted it, the screen size. 5.3' is big. There is no doubt about that, but I have big hands, and as much as I've enjoyed each and every iPhone I've ever owned I have always had a problem fumbling around with the virtual keyboard, even when in landscape. My kids on the other hand, they love their iPhones. They use the crap out of them for what they do, and they love Siri. And you know what, that's fine too...
I can't stand how 99% of the reviews for other phone find need to even mention the iPhone. Review the phone your reviewing and stop swinging from apple's nut sack like Tarzan its pathetic to say the least...

It's funny how in this piece Farjad writes that "When you go back to a normal phone after using something so large, you wonder what on earth you were thinking." While Engadget says "After a few hours with the Note you'll very quickly become accustomed to the size, and once you have you won't want to go back."
I don't see how he can justify that the utility of a phone diminishes as it's screen size increases. So long as it is pocketable, and increase in screen size will always increase utility. More screen real estate means more room for your fingers, more room for enjoying media, less zooming, and much less eye strain. I absolutely despise anybody that brags about the fackin 'retina display'. At 3.5", holding the phone a foot away or more makes small text unreadable anyways. Yes, our ppi is slightly lower at 285 I believe, but hell, you can at least read text from a foot away. Also, if you move an iphone close enoygh to make the screen appear the same size as the note, or the note far enough away to seem the same size as the iphone, guess what? The note has higher resolution. Bam. Some people are just too stupid and ignorant to accept the fact that the note destroys the need to carry a phone and a tablet. Yes, readability on an iPad is probably easier with the large display, but it's still an extra device that you have to carry, and it really cannot be held comfortably for extended periods of time anyways due to its weight to size ratio. The note will have a great weight to size ratio, making enjoying media for extended periods of time rival that of the lightweight kindles and nooks. Plus it makes calls. It's sad when people are so loyal to a brand that they fail to realize that other brands make superior products. I would take my current infuse or my old cappy over an iPhone any day of the week. And my old cappy is two years old.
The other thing that apple lovers fail to realize is that fragmentation isn't a completely bad thing. It gives you options. You have phones from the size of the HTC aria or xperia mini all the way up to the infuse, galaxy nexus and note, and everywhere in between. You can choose the device that suits your needs best, and aren't locked to a single size, incrementally update phone.
Also, I hate when apple fans bash the rate that new android phones are released. That hate is fackin stupid. It allows you to get the latest and greatest smartphone whenever you are available to upgrade, not just once a year. It also promotes competition that has driven the quality and technology of android devices at an unbelievable pace. Yes, your phone will not be the latest and greatest shortly after you purchase it, but you still have a top of the line phone that is every bit as good, if not better in my opinion, than an iPhone. Fragmentation pushes manufacturers to try new things that will bring great phones to the market much faster than one phone per year. I guarantee that if apple made multiple versions and screen sizes of the iPhone that their market share would not increase. Instead, they would have fewer people per each device, with roughly the same number of people.
People like having choices, and until apple realizes that, iOS will forever be behind android.

Love this comment. Completely agree. It seems nearly impossible yo read a phone review without mention of an iPhone. And why?!!
Constant mention of it is probably the only thing that keeps the iPhone relevant (in any way that it is). Is apple paying all these people!? Jeebus! iPhone is crap compared to even my 2yr old Evo 4g. And I've got ICS on my Evo lol. Would apple ever ALLOW THAT? Hell NO.
Hey, "reviewers", listen carefully,...there is no need to mention iPhone unless you are REVIEWING an iPhone (once a year). Try that, and see what happens to apples market share. I guarantee it would stagnate. You currently are just providing free, unwarranted, press for apple. And looking a fool

While I agree that it is stupid for so many reviewers to talk about the iPhone, that is not "the only thing that keeps the iPhone relevant." Millions of people have and will continue to buy iPhones even if new Android phones are not compared to the iPhone in reviews. The reasons the iPhone is popular are legion, from people who are clueless, to Apple cultists, to people who legitimately prefer the feel of iOS to other mobile options. The clueless people are the only people who might be influenced by lack of iPhone mention in reviews, but I sincerely doubt that many of them have ever read a review of Android device online.

I guess all android users are poor now.

Android flood of instagram users will overtake apple users in a short period of time. Android has way larger user base. I got it on my Atrix. haven't really tried it out yet. seems like a bunch of b.s. really. so i want to see what the hype is over. This is horrible. What pisses me off the most about Apple is that they outsource their manufacturing and claim that it is to keep the cost of their product down, yet I believe they have the highest priced devices. Secondly they create a standard for the outrageously priced devices when they could EASILY shave 30 to 40 percent of the price on ALL of their mobile products if not ALL of them products. And, what's the worst part of all is that the mobile market is exponentially growing, meaning the two grand you dropped on your current phone/tablet setup will be obsolete in 3 to 6 months. Rather than really fine tune a product, they continually shell out new devices with "better" specs. Kinda ridiculous the way they produce products, even Android is guilty of this. It's bad for the consumer, but great for the companies. I mean why create a solid product that stays current for at least a year when you can make devices obsolete after three months which in turn will guarantee that at least a greater percentage of consumers will repurchase the newest devices at a quicker pace. Whatever happened to companies providing what is best for the consumer and not what makes the most amount of money in the shorted amount of time!
Oh well, it is what it is. Before you know it there will be an entirely new type of gadget out that replaces the smart phone/tablet all together and then the cycle repeats but with higher prices and shorter device life spans. Actually, to be honest, I am suprised that we aren't forced into purchasing firmware upgrades... Hmm, maybe I shouldn't of said that, I could totally see a CEO reading this post and going ZOMG GREAT IDEA $50 to update your device!
In any event, kudos to Cult of Mac for reporting on this, given that they're describing a large part of their own audience.

Social media really brings out the stupid in people. We used to think about something before sharing it with the world but now people share it with the world before thinking about it. It is because there always seems to be an audience (the internet) available. This is not the only case. (Incoming Hunger Games Spoiler) A while ago when the Grammys were on there was the whole "I would let Chris Brown beat me any day" tweets. Then when the Hunger Games movie came out there was the whole "I don't feel so bad about Rue anymore after finding out she was black".

lol all their rage right now.
What I get from this is Apple users blindly buy apps and hope they work for what they want it to do (As there is no refund). With Android I'm going to look for the free app if i'm looking for a specific function. If it does it well, then It might entice me to look into the paid version to see what extras you get if you pay for it. There are a lot of crap apps, and you kinda have to test them all to find the best one that works for you. It's annoying when there are no free apps on Apple to test what you want to do, and if the app you bought isn't what you thought it was or has problems, you can't refund. Sucks!

Apple has kept a pretty consistent 1 year release schedule. Also why would you expect a company to lower their prices when they are selling their products as fast as they can? They arn't charities.

Why so much iPhone hate?

I know I don't have a lot of posts and you guys don't see me around a lot, but I'm on this forum for a couple hours each day and I just see a TON of Apple and iPhone hate. What I don't understand is why you hate them so much. A lot of you categorize ANY iPhone user as a sheep who doesn't know that there's any other phone out there.
I have an iPhone and I can guarantee you that I'm not a sheep. I chose my 4S because the specs are great and I love iOS. I also bought an Evo 3D on ebay because I like Sense also. I use my iPhone as my main phone because it fits me best, I love the apps, and I get updates the day that they are released (ICS was released back in October, thats 7 months ago and we still don't have it on our phones!!!!). Just because I prefer a different phone than you doesn't mean that I follow everyone else. It just means I have a different preference than you.
It annoys me that the majority of users on this forum think that Apple is evil and anyone who owns an iPhone is evil as well. Why can't you accept that people have different preferences on phones and that doesn't make them sheep or stupid fanboys?
I'll probably receive a lot of trolling because of this thread, but I just wanted to get this off my chest.
It really goes both ways; just as you have rabid Apple fans, you have crazy Android fans. There are a lot of really immature people here who don't seem to think before they post. Many of them seem to believe that just because they decided to be different that they are better than people who purchased Apple devices.
I don't really understand why people are so insecure with their choice that they feel the need to belittle others, but they do it. Even mentioning something that iOS has over Android will provoke twenty people saying that once they overclock their phone, tweak everything, and so on, they are able to get the same performance as iOS and that Apple users are homosexuals and etc.
It's like a group of people sitting at their computers waiting for someone to say "Apple" so that they can go on about their petty little vendettas against Apple. It's like a group of children who only want to pick on each other. It's disgusting. They're just hypocrites, and not worth anyone's time.
i completely understand you and i also dont understand why so much hate, but i think it is more between samsung and apple users XD i also like iphone, ios and sense but i dont like small screens, so thats reason why i never even thought about buying and iphone xD but if there will be iphone with bigger screen, ill consider about buying it, but ill keep my evo
I Personally don't like Apple or any of their products. Never owned one and never will, I'm proud to say so.
I will say they are very good at what they do. When the IPhone first came out, it was very impressive.
You are right, it is just a matter of preference. Most people on here like HTC phones. I'm sure if go on IPhone forums and start talking about HTC phones, they will hang you out to dry.
The name calling specifically sheep, has mostly been in jest
The recent hate is justified though. These lawsuits apple has been filing are for the most part frivolous because the wacked patent system in the US. The EVO 4G LTE was delayed because apple claimed it infringed on one of its patents. HTC found a workaround to avoid using the patent but even so one unit per shipment of phones has to be examined by US Customs thus delaying the phone some more.
Important to note that iPhone 5 is being held up or delayed to workaround 5 patents HTC owns.
Both companies have been suing each other. However one has been a royal douche. One of the companies says the other blatantly copied the former while in fact the former ripped off features from the latter in its last major OS update. If you haven't noticed, the former is Apple and the latter is HTC. It's appalling because Apple is making more money than ever and can't be happy with that.
For me, I say screw the patent system and let all the companies out innovate each other, that way the consumer wins.

i refer to the sheep as those who buy it for posing around with....then when they see another phone they start moaning that the iphone can't do this and that and the other. And the fact that people complain about the monthly prices after buying them and signing the extortionate contract.
Also i don't like the fact that how some iphone users seem to belittle others by very slyly implying their phone's better by doing this that and what have you, and if you argue...it doesn't go down well with them.
Again this is only for the minority who own idevices but the minority is making their voices heard and the majority who buy and iphone and get on with their life suffer.
THAT WAS THE USERS.....NOW THE ACTUAL PHONE
I like what they've done, its pretty much bought that section of the market along with the rest of the competition to the mainstream. the phone specs right now are good...the original bunch of iphones not having 3g and multi-tasking? wtf to that decision....but anyways they learnt. I myself am thinking about getting an ipad 2 soon (depends on a few things....not $) because it is way ahead of anything for now.
the lawsuits don't help, i dont care whether its for stopping products or the conspiracy of giving them publicity. they need to stop because its a bad PR for anyone, including the consumer.

Welcome to XDA, can't even refer people here because it's a bunch of 2 year old out trolling the other.
On a OP note. Apple has to be doing something right. They customer service rates are so much higher. I loved my iPhone. Yes we don't have ics yet but who cares. The ONLY beef I have with my current setup is sprint. I know not HTC's fault. I can not stand having to download a video to watch it because it's faster to do that then stream one. I own an iPhone and iPod. Daily devices have always been Android phones though. It's all preference. I need the Open Source nature of Android.
Some people are better suited for an ios device.
Being called a sheep isn't technically inaccurate as a majority of ios users don't believe in much else besides the device they have.
I don't agree with fanboyism though, It's annoying and immature, but it'll always continue.

Apple are marketing geniuses. I don't get into the fanboy wars between either OS, but my problem with Apple is the way they lock down their OS & the choice of apps, or rather I say users have no free choice of apps cuz they only get what Apple feels is good for them. Now they have amazing hardware, but the cost for it isn't worth it IMO since they're paying way less for the parts & production of their products.

I completely agree, unfortunately the stuck up people from either side are the ones who let themselves be heard. I see Apple fans also hate on Android a lot and I really don't see why everyone can't accept that other phones and OS's are really cool.

It's definitely worse between Apple and Samsung, but I still see stuff between HTC guys and Apple guys. I can kinda see the Samsung thing because they have actually taken ideas from Apple, but HTC? I think Apple and HTC are the best two phone companies out there. The screen doesn't really bother me, but I would like a bigger one.

i refer to the sheep as those who buy it for posing around with....then when they see another phone they start moaning that the iphone can't do this and that and the other.

This video pretty much sums up the attitude of a lot (not ALL) of Apple users. This is why I will never buy an Apple product. At first, yeah, the iPhone was cool. Now there are much better devices (technically speaking) that do much more, yet "Oh my God look mommy it's an iPhone!" is still heard everywhere as if it's some sort of magical device. I suppose my hatred for Apple products stems from irritation from ignorant consumers who simply get on my nerves.
The reason why there are people who have issues with Apple is simple: Apple has become an icon of Corporate World. Yes, corporations are evil and after Steve Jobs has resigned from Apple even more people have turned against Apple. By buying an iPhone you support the wealth-culture that thrives on social inequalities created and sustained by global corporations. There is nothing wrong about hate towards corporations and those who support them. It is only natural.
In fact Android (while being not so different from Apple in its core) still represents all those have-nots who deserve just as much as their wealthy counterparts.
As for homosexuals and iPhones, well...this is obvious: they have become the driving force of the trend-over-intelligence kind of tendency that have only added more crap to already TV-brainwashed minds of the general North American population. Another thing homosexuals should have never done was occupying the entire artistic and design-related industries and forcing all the talented straight folks out of the market to completely eradicate even the possibility of having a healthy competition that can damage their reputation as the only worthy artists on the planet.
Now the iPhone owners are called sheep because of that very trend-over-intelligence choice the majority of them have made when they chose to buy iPhone. Did you notice that all these crappy musicians and graphic artists turn to Apple computers not because of the fact that those are the most optimized for the industry tools, but simply because they are the most expensive ones? Just like the worst musicians always own the most expensive instruments that money can buy.

All roads lead to apples wallet, they limit you to only the apps and music they want you to have! I do believe apple is evil and don't care about there consumers at all. Yeah ics isn't here yet but android phones still have better costumer assistance. I have both Android and IPS devicrs(phone, iPod & ipad). Both have pluses and minuses. The frivalous lawsuits by all companies is getting annoying.
Pluses to Android is the openness. I use my phone for work and personal. I want to be able to have the option to block calls with a white list and also block calls permanently. I jailbroke my iPhone but it had several app issues. Once I returned to stack all issues went away.
Minuses for Android is background bugs that lead to severe battery drains. Some of the apps on Android are not as nice as iOS.
Pluses for iPhones are accessory like extended life batteries as a case and battery as one

Sony Mobile president: "...not afraid of lawsuits..."

'No (need for) Windows 8 because....'
"We are not afraid of lawsuits, because we have an extensive portfolio of intellectual property rights”
Sony Mobile’s President and CEO Kunimasa Suzuki
http://www.xperiablog.net/2012/09/12/sony-mobiles-new-ceo-says-no-to-windows-phone-8/
This is exactly what I expected of Sony. You may have noticed when Sony bought out Ericsson's share, part of the deal which was commonly overlooked, was that Sony gets unrestricted license to Ericsson's patent portfolio. Combine Ericsson's founding foot in the origins of telephony combined with Sony's extensive catelogue, and you have a patent portfolio that would make even Apple pee themselves. If only Sony could share them (though it would be extremely disproportionately unfavourable to them).
I read that in some industries, something called 'patent pooling' can be agreed. So companies as you might expect, share specific patents and prohibit lawsuits related to those patents. I read though that in the mobile industry, it's very unlikely though.
Any thoughts?
Oh.
I was actually wondering what are the major patents that Sony (Ericsson) holds?
You would have to think that along with Motorola for example, Ericsson probably own many of the parents that mobile telecommunications are founded on. These are companies that have been in telecoms a neck of a lot longer than apple and build much of the infrastructure.
I doubt apple can hold claim to any of the core technology (though correct me if I am wrong), I would imagine much of their "innovative" tech is based around user experience. However how much did they patent during the newton project I wonder. Sony however have a very long history in portable gadgets and particularly audio so it could get interesting if there were to be a suit I guess.
Personally I believe Samsung did copy apple but only because much of that 'copied' was obvious and the patents shouldn't have been granted in the first place (how can you patent a rectangle with rounded corners when potable gadgets have been that shape from forever). Strange how other countries are throwing apple's allegations out of court yet in the us they are upheld - I'm not implying bias btw, just that the patents system is badly broken. The funny thing is that many of the key components in apple devices are made by Samsung in the first place, I know what would be thinking if iwas was Samsung.

Sony will never ever ever be sued for the same reasons Apple sued Samsung, neither will HTC, Motorola, and even LG. Their hardware is distinctive from the iPhone and they follow Google's hardware design guideline, unlike Samsung, who tries so hard to imitate the iPhone. First with the big fat giant home button, then S-this S-that. And they wonder why Apple goes after them.
apple cant even dare touch sony...
I doubt they've ever even considered it.
He also acknowledged in his statement that the company has consistently lost market share over the years. That's their greatest challenge....competing with the likes of Apple and Samsung. Forget Apple because Samsung is who they''ll really be up against. They need to first of all improve significantly on software and end this releasing phones with dated software business. It cripples the phones. Secondly they need to respect the idea of the flagship device and never again repeat the crap of a new flagship every three months or so. A joke!
Repeating any of these mistakes will just ensure that this market share that's already in decline, will see its devaluation accelerate. They are already too close for comfort to the point of no return.
Put all talk about patents to one side.

Of course they can.
This is not how the patent litigation game is played.
It is a gamble. An attempt to cripple the oponent (just for now or permanently) and to cause as much bleeding and pain as possible. Means to kill outright (if they are lucky) or in worst case to get a better position in later negotiations.
For example, they are not afraid of Motorola which has tons and tons of various patents. They were not afraid of Nokia. They lost, but the gamble was worth trying.
Sony is safe for now only because they have such a tiny market share.
There are other reasons why Sony is currently not interested in WP platform. It would drain their resources, so Android phones would get even bigger delays. And currently there are no money in WP world, as there is a dying and desperate elephant ready for literally anything.

It is not like that matters much, there are 3242345 different ways to spin it in their favour. In that particular case Apple was just so incredibly lucky to get such a *censored* jury. Or maybe it is a home turf advantage, I don't know, but they equally did not had a leg to stand on against Samsung.
Such design or feature "inspiration" games are perfectly normal industry practice. Before "copying" Sony they did copy Braun: http://cheezburger.com/6563205376. And the new iPod nano is a "stolen" Samsung P2 from 2007: http://www.randomprocess.ca/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/p2.jpg
In a sane world it is not a problem at all, everyone does it, it is called "getting inspired and improving on" or simply "following the industry trends". Unless you get a chance to persuade a bunch of laypeople that this is something wrong.
For example, look at the car or fashion industry. All cars follow certain fashion trends and get similar design elements. It is perfectly normal and nobody sues mercedes just because they adopted edged design pioneered by bmw. Or flat door panels without moldings with sharp bend going through door handles. Or LED DRL eyebrows from Audi which possibly in turn copied it from someone else.
Anyway, they don't necessary need to even touch the design patents, they have a ton of insanely broad technical patents.

They're not that dim witted to simply watch Sony die. Their revenue each year, with the net profit alongside well surpasses what they need to purchase Sony. And still be left with plenty of finances. They would most likely just purchase Sony.
Compare revenues this year, there's an $8 Billion deficit in favour of Apple. That's not including the Iphone 5 sales which will more than likely send said revenue soaring this year. Sony have released many new products this year, doesn't bode well right?

Which is pretty much what Nokia seemed to do (a long with putting all their eggs in the Symbian basket) and look what happened to them.
At the end of the day it all comes down to marketing. Like the new iPhone. Is not the moist technologically advanced handset out there but you can bet apple will shout about its merits louder than Sony will about their range. At the end of the day, prior to the iPod how many non-IT people had even heard of apple -the iPod itself is an example of clever marketing. As an MP3 player the original iPod wasn't fantastic -the sound quality was patchy, you had no custom equaliser, etc, etc. But people avoided more established audio brands including Sony in favor of the iPod as apple got the timing right and built a product many people found desirable. Its like jeans. What's the difference at the end of the day between 2 pairs of denim jeans made in the same factory. Probably not a lot. But put a brand name on one pair and you can bet it will sell a lot quicker due to the marketing undertaken by that brand.
If Sony want to make a major impact on the phone market then IMHO they need to do 3 things
1. Design desirable handsets with features people want and can't get from competitors such as apple like SD expansion, and equal or better everyone Elses build quality. Aluminium will always feel better quality than thin plastic yet apple make huge margins even though their production is outsourced.
2. Invest in marketing with a view to the payback coming in the long term (IMHO they missed a trick with the Xperia 2012 devices by not marketing the sound quality -many people use the MP3 function on their phones whilst commuting for example so why not trade on the Walkman brand more for example). Create a strategy and allow the mobile division to innovate without interference from other parts of the company - strong leadership is needed for this
3. Create a level of exclusivity by releasing a limited number of handsets a year, say an entry level, mid-range, and a flagship device with each having its own best in class feature and the higher models incorporating at least as good features as the models below in addition to their headline feature which appeals to their particular target market. If apple released as many phones as Sony have since the split from Ericsson there's no way they could create the hype and buzz around each new release. Samsung are a special case as their strategy seems more focused on flooding the market with devices but even so their build quality isn't the best which could haunt them.
RE the patents issue it seems to come down to who has the most luck on the day. It seems to me that apples big fear is someone else coming up with the next big thing as once apple are no longer seem by the general public as leading edge they have nothing to fall back on as essentially their only asset is the apple brand. Is not like they can supply components to other companies like Samsung, Motorola, and Sony can and regroup.

I agree with a lot of what others think here too.
Another thing is, look at how many partners Apple has in making the iPhone including:
CPU: Samsung, though rumoured Apple is trying to develop it's own chip
Screens: Samsung, Sharp
Camera: Sony
Can Apple really afford to fight with everyone? (I mean more than just money terms).
p.s. I have no doubt that Apple would be intimidated by the Sony+Ericsson patent portfolio. If having a huge patent portoflio wasn't useful, then why would all these tech. companies be spending billions on buying patents? I finished my thesis on the patent wars in college a few months ago, I wish I could have gotten more of this in! :victory:
I just found this, one of Steve Jobs' best friends thinks the Apple vs. Samsung verdict will be overturned and he says he doesn't agree with Apple recent behaviour anyway:

It's not about Sony itself.
The big boy here is Ericsson, wich have almost the entire range of intellectual patents for essential GSM communication and data. (2g,3g,4g...)
And Sony acquired it
Apple is not so dumb to do this.
They know the smell of "danger".
@draugaz
Mister, Sony is among the top 5 patent holders GLOBALLY. There is no way Apple can even dream of suing Sony.

This is just ridiculous

Check out Apple's new patent.
Doesn't every phone have lockscreen shortcuts?
I mean I love how they say it's "new technology"
Apple created Adam and Eve and therefore has a patent on anything they create.
It says a new patent that allows access to apps from the iPhone lock screen specifically.
So my question is why hasn't the other manufactures already patented it? If they would have this crap wouldn't happen. Guess thats the problem with open source. Google and the patent office need to fix this. I don't care that Apple wants that for their phones but to patent something already being used is just BS.

Apple sues everyone for copying them, but as soon as they copy something that has been in android forever it's ok right... Honestly apple is just ridiculous in general. The interface is just easier for people and thats why the iphone is so popular, most people who own the iphone think its the best when the specs are lacking so far behind android. Apple is on the way out. Why do you think Apple stock has fallen 40 percent in the last 6 months? People like preference and android is mature. Apple is far behind the competition.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW
As much as I love to bash Apple until they're a nice warm cider I don't think I can agree that Apple is "on the way out". I think what we're seeing instead is the market shifting.
Apple for the past decade has targeted Innovators and Early Adopters offering Luxury goods. As the smart phone industry (specifically the always connected mini-computer touch screen phones we're used to now) matures margins fall and competition increases. iPhones used to be status symbols, and they still can be, however they've become so common place that they've lost a lot of their marginal utility.
Google, Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola, even Sony have all stepped up their game on a united Android front. The brilliance of Android for Google that I suspect, is that the competition between Android devices (Samsung GS4 v. HTC One for example) improves the Android offering with tons of new features and brand visibility. I know for a fact that Android is regularly sipping away the iPhone's market share.
Returning to my point, Android has always operated with a model adopted from classic handset sales. Margins are fairly low, but, due largely in part by the free cost of Android to the developers, they're able to offer phones at affordable prices that match or exceed Apple's iPhone. Apple always tries to maintain that their products are different and superior to the competition. In fact, they rarely even acknowledge that there is competition and I do believe that this (over)confident stance has helped them maintain their market share and unique identity.
iPhones arguably lag behind Android's top offerings these days. No NFC, No Wireless charging, no HD screen, etc. I don't believe iPhones really hold the public perception of being superior to the competition anymore. Apple is struggling to keep it's market share and I think it's operating on a model that is unsustainable. Think of it this way.
When it comes time to replace a Macbook Pro, most users will grab the latest MBP without even thinking about it. When it comes time to replace their iPhone though, more and more people are considering, and switching to Android.
patents simply limit innovation. They limit what manufacturers can do with their devices.

I suspect you've never invented anything.
What the OP fails to disclose (and I don't know if any one of you bothered to do the research).. was that this patent was filed way back in 2011 by Apple. Also, the functionality in question is a little bit more involved than just merely accessing apps from lockscreen.
Apple is the most valuable company in the world.. if you want to believe into the 24x7 anti-apple propaganda.. by all means do so. But that is not gonna deter apple or tech enthusiasts who value what apple has to offer.
Apple and the whole iphone phenomenon annoy the sh**t out of me... I don't know why, it's only a phone. Such a stupid thing to get so annoyed about. But it's true. Every time they add a new feature to the iphone, everyone acts as if it's groundbreaking and it's a huge f***ing deal. And then you have those iPhone owners that are still convinced that owning an iPhone makes them "unique" as if they haven't noticed that everyone else has the same exact phone as them. Android as an os is better in every way and so is the hardware current phones use. And yet I use their products because I have to. I use osx and have an ipad strictly because I require the software. Were it not for that, I would probably be sticking Linux and Android.

All I can say is that I give Apple credit where it's deserved, otherwise I completely dislike any product they produce. Plus, iPhone's and iPads do have there place in the world..... like for my Mother to use.

Exactly. I have 0 issue with Apple other than their legal dept. They create a smooth, easy to use product. Polished, refined, it works. The retina display is truely remarkable.

Actually their retina displays are made by samsung. So you can't really give apple credit there. They just buy them from samsung. According to what I heard.

Under a no distribution clause Samsung solely sells the "retina" display to apple..
Apple just outsourced to save $ on a specialty product

Actually Samsung n LG just manufacture these products. 'Retina' display is just a marketing term used by apple to discribe pixle density+viewing distance needed to make individual pixles impossible to discern with the human eye or retina. Its core tech is no different than a standard LCD..http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/44728/what-exactly-is-a-retina-display
