[Q] How to install Ice Cream Sandwich RUU on HTC Desire S? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an HTC Desire S and I want to download the official ICS update but I don't know how to get it. I downloaded the RUU off the HTCdev website but then I don't know what to do after that. Can someone just give me a clear cut way in how to install it please? Do I have to root or unlock bootloader? Thanks.

All you need to do is connect your device to a PC and run the RUU.

I want a fresh install of official ICS because my current custom ROM has bugs, will this RUU erase my current ROM and Clean install the ICS?

It will erase everything on the device except SD card, restore bootloader to locked state, format all partitions, and install offical ICS. It'll return your phone to factory condition, that's what the purpose of RUU is. Just connect your phone to your computer, run the RUU and let it do its thing. Suppose your custom ROM doesn't boot, then press and hold power+volume down, the phone will boot into bootloader and show 'FASTBOOT USB'. Now connect it to the computer and run the RUU, it'll work.
Note: You can only upgrade via RUU, not downgrade.

thanks buddy and please help me lil further,i have 2.00.2002 hboot and S-ON, so am i still able to install the official ICS or I have to do the S-OFF first??

No problem. S-OFF is only required for flashing custom recoveries and subsequently flashing ROMs. The state of the bootloader i.e. S-ON or S-OFF doesn't matter if you're running an RUU. It will restore the bootloader to stock S-ON state. Since ICS is the last RUU for Desire S, you can't have a hboot version that higher than the one in the RUU. So whatever hboot you have, just run the RUU and you'll be back to stock.

Thanx alot

Just download the RUU, connect your phone to Pc, execute the RUU.exe and let it do the rest of the job,you should install HTC sync to avoid any interceptions..

Will the ics up-gradation will replace my 4ext recovery to stock one?
I could not find the answer for it, that is why asking.
Sorry if spamming.

Backup/Restore App Recommendations?
From the posts in this thread I gather all data will probably be lost.
Are there any recommendations for a backup/restore app that:
1. Works with both GB & ICS seamlessly (would hate to backup and not be able to restore)
2. Works for Contacts/SMS and app settings as well.

Yes it will. It'll restore the stock recovery. You'll have to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery again if you want.

It's recommended not to restore application data between phones/ROMs. It can cause a lot of force closes, incompatibilities and errors. Also, you need to be rooted to restore data. You should always do a clean install when you get a new phone, which just involves adding your Google account, letting the phone restore contacts, apps, system settings etc automatically, and then reconfiguring all your apps. It doesn't take too long to do that if you do it quickly.
For SMS, use 'SMS Backup & Restore. Saving your contacts as Google contacts is the easiest and best way to restore contacts. That said, try Titanium Backup or the new and much easier to use 'Carbon - App Sync and Backup' if you want to backup and restore apps + app data.
Note: Restoring apps and app data requires root, so if you're unrooted, you must install apps from Play Store and set them up. You should do this anyway if you want to avoid all possibility of errors.

s-off flyer wont OTA Update? or lost root after RUU? (non-tech solution)

OK, if you have performed the revolutionary s-off like me, your OTA updates wont Update!
Have no fear (or better you should... )
A way forward is here....
Use EsFileExplorer Manager to back up all your apps.
Use HTC Sync to Backup as much data as you see fit....
I have to say this is relatively easy for noobs but involves a fair bit of work as it returns your device to a factory format (some would say a benefit as all crud is removed!)
First choose the correct RUU update from the stock ROM section on here for your device (all latest FW's are there if people supply them...).
This will install from your PC to the Flyer when USB cable is connected, cancel HTC Sync then close it, and then run the RUU update.
This will install the latest firmware but the results are:
s-off is still present.
CWM Recovery and Super User are removed.
All you have to do then is
Uninstall HTSync from your PC.
Shut down both PC and Flyer and restart.
Connect the flyer back to the PC in HTC sync mode, and run revolutionary.exe, it will protest that your unit is already s-off but will give you the option to install CWM again.
Once this is done, you can use CWM to re-install the Superuser file su-2.3.6.3-egfh.zip
Your Flyer will be back to a rooted, Super User factory version of the latest update where you have to install all your apps and customisations again, BUT at least you got your update....
If you did not save the revolutionary.zip file first time, you can still perform this through the website.
If you want to enable phone function, you can either perform the build.prop edit found on this forum area or I would suggest you use the http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1359&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.xda-developers.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D1205050&v=1&libid=1314447895451&out=http%3A%2F%2Fandroidrevolution.nl%2Fnickiberli%2Findex.php%3Fdir%3DFlyer%252FMODs%252F&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.xda-developers.com%2Fforumdisplay.php%3Ff%3D1023&title=%5BROM%5D%5BKernel%5D%5BFlyer%5D%20FlyHigh%20ROM%20v1.2%20%7C%20extra%20speed%20%7C%20GSM%2FWiFi%20script%20%7C%20Android%202.3.4%20-%20xda-developers&txt=enable_gsm_phone_calls.zip&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13144479250571 by niciberli installed via CWM (donate to him as this one gives true contact images in phone...)
Only drawback with that is your software version in 'About Device' will say FlyHigh ROM! but it is actually stock.....
Enjoy....
Donate to football if you can in the shipped ROMs thread as he provides the support for this and any other guys such as globatron. For me, just tick the Thanks box if you find it useful.
Thank you... now I just need the latest update RUU 2.27.207.1 for o2
Well this was just perfect for me. I lost root when I flashed a stock rom and I was looking for an easy way to get it back. This did it! Thanks so much.
You can also re-flash recovery using fastboot and then install su.zip. You don't have to use revolutionary, for some people the recovery download doesn't work through revolutionary.
See the instructions in my S-OFF thread for what to do if revolutionary fails to install recovery and go from there.
As CWM is removed when a RUU is performed, and a .zip needs to be installed, I tried to keep it simple for noobs, but any input is welcome for all of us!
Does this work for the Sprint View? If not, can you tell me how to upgrade a rooted/s-off evo view?
thank Farsquidge.
but i cannot find the Original Rom for HK.
don't know how to update 2.3.4
maybe waiting a new vision to update my flyer
thank you again

Thanks - however, can someone point me to the correct RUU? I am currently using Sprint Evo View 1.18.651.1, baseband 1.05.11.0509. It is rooted with S-OFF. I looked in this post but could not find the correct RUU.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1062184
TIA
Edit: I was able to flash it back to stock, then upgraded to GB 2.3.4, and re-rooted. I cannot figure out how to flash recovery - I keep getting "waiting for device".
what hboot version do you have after running this?
i now have hboot-6.10.1002. and following this link but using RUU_Flyer_HTC_WWE_2.23.405.3_R_Radio_20.3504.30.08 9BU_3809.07.04.06_M_release_204108_signed instead.
So I am not sure if this is related, but what is happening is that the internal storage is not picked up by CWM. Or is that expected behaviour?

[Q] Some questions on move to 4.3 3.24.531.3 RUU

I'm currently rooted and using TWRP as a recovery and Sense 5 (stock rom). I've backed up everything with Titanium Backup but am still feeling a bit worried about making the move. Any clear advice or direction is appreicated - it's the range of comments I've seen on this forum and others that has had me anxious.
Is it as simple as flashing the new RUU with TWRP? If not, what should my steps be? I'm still quite new to Android, so I apologize for sounding so clueless. I'm happy to take the safest path necessary -- whatever that may be -- I don't mind needing to unlock and root from scratch.
Thanks for any help.

You dont flash an RUU with recovery. Its pretty simple, actually. Just follow the directions on the HTC website:
Performing the ROM Update:
Download and save the HTC One™ for T-Mobile ROM update to your PC.
Connect your device to your PC via the supplied USB cable.
If the device is not recognized by the PC, ensure you have HTC Sync Manager installed and then disconnect and reconnect the device from the USB cable.
Once the device is properly recognized on the PC, locate the HTC One™ for T-Mobile ROM Update that you downloaded. Double-click on the file to launch the system update wizard.
Follow all of the system update wizard instructions shown on your PC.
Once the update is complete, click Finish in the Wizard and the device will reboot.
Once the device reboots, the initial setup wizard will appear.
Once the initial setup process is complete, the device is ready for use.
You will then be unrooted stock with stock recovery and hboot. Not sure why youre so hesitant. Rooting can be done as it was prior.
And, as always, backup everything just in case (pics, vids, etc to your PC).

Thanks for the reply. I've been reading around that having an unlocked boot loader is a bad idea before starting any of this. Should I re-lock that before using the RUU?
I was unlocked s-off running a custom rom when I flashed the ruu. Afterwards I was still unlocked s-off with stock unrooted with stock hboot and recovery.

IMHO its easier with s-off, and getting s-off is easier than what you'll need to do to take RUU. With s-on, you'll need to relock bootloader, flash stock recovery and hboot. Or, just go through getting s-off and you'll be set.

[Q] Stuck on stock gingerbread ROM missing files

I'm currently using a Macbook Pro and NOT Windows PC. I rooted my Rezound March 2012 with PC at time. Well awhile back I had accidentally deleted some system files from stock gingerbread 2.3.4 ROM. Now i'm not able to update my device to ICS to make use of the global capabilities. I installed Scotts ROM 2.3.4 a copy of it but it never recovered the system files that were missing. I would like to be able to S-Off (couldn't perform wire trick) and flash either CM 10.2 (Jelly Bean 4.3) or CM 11.0 (kitkat 4.4). I've read without being on stock baseband radio (ICS) I'm not able to perform a flash to new ROM. Anyone have any suggestions to proceed further? Thanks!
Well first of all you can use rum runner from the general section to soff with out wire trick. You say that the gingerbread boot loader doesn't support fastboot?

That's exactly what I was telling pball52998 I had planned on doing. Except with mac it's difficult and without being able to get to ICS with the radio capabilities I can not go that route. I need to obtain stock gingerbread containing ALL system files including the system OTA update file I originally deleted. When i had to re-do my phone over a year ago and re-flash gingerbread because my device was messed up I was NOT able to access files that I had deleted in system. I was supposed to freeze them not uninstall originally. Unless there's an ICS unoffical ROM with all working radios and global capabilities then I'm forever stuck on Stock gingerbread. Do you understand? And using another persons PC is a no go because i have to install software ADB on their computer and I'm 100% sure they would not be ok with it at all. It's getting late here now. so goodnight to you. :good:

ADB doesn't need to be installed, you can just drop the files into a temp folder, run what you need and delete them.
As for getting your phone up to ICS, this will wipe your phone (including the Internal SD, back up anything you want off to your computer), upgrade your phone to ICS and the hboot to 2.27 which is sufficient for installing JB/KK roms.
As long as your hboot is 2.27 or older and your bootloader is locked, it should work fine, follow the directions on the page. If none of the mirrors work, Raventech has it posted in a thread here also.

[Q] Cannot Download OTA

I have an AT&T HOX+ running stock. It's unlocked via HTC and rooted. I cannot download any OTAs. I learned the hard way that you cannot download OTAs if you have any stock apps disabled so I've re-enabled them. Now it goes through the motions and finds the update, but when I connect to Wifi all I see is a blank message as seen in the attached screenshot.

Maybe Unroot and try.......
You must first flash the stock recovery and then relock bootloader using the command "fastboot oem lock" in fastboot. The stock recovery.img can be flashed using the fastboot command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" where "recovery.img" is replaced with whatever your recovery name is and .img. Make sure you flash the recovery before relocking. Root should not mess up the update although you will lose root after the update. I updated while the device was still rooted!

So there's no way to update and run a custom recovery? If I have to relock the bootloader, I can't unlock again without factory wiping.
Why can't HTC just get the bluetooth right from the start? How did they even release a phone when BT doesn't work?

It's not the unrooting that will cause you to lose any data or other content on your device. It is the re-unlocking of the bootloader or the running of a RUU. AFAIK, there is no way to keep your device contents while you update the radio and hboot. The only option is to backup contents of SD, backup apps using Google or TiBU, and backup sms and call log. I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure this is how it goes. With that being said, it is not mandatory that you upgrade the radio/hboot in order to install a ROM that is sense 5/JB 4.2.2. There are already ROM's out there for AT&T built on this base

If I unroot and install the OTA, and then unlock the bootloader again, with it keep the updated firmware or drop back to factory?
If I'm going through all this trouble, maybe I should be looking at a custom ROM. Any suggestions for a Sense 5 one built on AT&T? I haven't seen one for this phone.

If you update via the OTA then your factory firmware WILL be updated. Maybe you can request that a dev make a ROM that is stock and rooted sense5/JB 4.2.2, you might grab the interest of someone.. That way you could have a "stock" image of the ROM and avoid the radio/hboot upgrade. Otherwise, you will just have to go through the update process, wiping your device. IMO, backing everything up is not too painstaking and it is a good practice to do this periodically anyways. Just my .02!

Backing up isn't too difficult on JB. I've done it manually as well as with Helium and other apps throughout the rooting/experimenting process. It's been my experience that those app backups don't restore properly and I'm left starting over anyway. The issues could be app specific, but I honestly don't remember which apps didn't work now.
Of course, I suppose it's all a small price to pay to have a phone that actually works when I connect my BT headset.
Where does one find the stock recovery?
I hope this isn't silly, but I've been running custom recovery forever and I'm blanking as to where to locate/d-load the stock recovery.
thanks!

OK, well after dusting off the cobwebs and reading some threads for the Intl version I learned this... the stock firmware will also contain the radios and stock recovery. So now I'm looking for the correct firmware to match my phone's CID and Modelid. The command to dump these variables out is 'fastboot getvar all'
My AT&T OneX+ reported this:
(bootloader) modelid: PM6310000
(bootloader) cidnum: CWS__001
There's a txt file in the firmware.zip that will contain a list of the applicable CID numbers the firmware can apply to. Evidently since our phones are S-on an entry in the list must correspond to the device's reported CID.
So now I'm searching for an updated firmware.zip
You can find the stock rom here as found in this thread.

[Q] want to restore phone to stock

I don't mind keeping it rooted/unlocked etc but i want the rom to be stock. Going to be giving this phone to a family member and I just don't want to deal with any tech support issues for the phone so I'd like to put it back to stock so if they need to call sprint, everything is going to look normal.
I'm downloading the RUU_Jewel exe file from here http://d-h.st/QhK - i'm just not sure what to do with it. Last time i flashed any roms on this phone i downloaded a zip file and installed it through recovery.
Does this exe run from my desktop and install over usb? I assume root will be gone if i install this. and s-off will remain off?
thanks
Don't run that RUU. Hit the top link in my sig and scroll down to the RUU section for instructions on how to install a RUU. Then scroll down to the bottom of the same post and download the 4.13.651.4 RUU. The RUU will install the stock ROM, therefore removing root and your custom recovery. You will remain S-off but your bootloader will be relocked. It is run from your computer.
Just a quick note. This RUU will change the partition setup for the internal storage. If you have anything on your internal storage and want to save it, back it up to your computer before running the RUU, as the RUU will wipe the internal storage.

Thanks - can you tell me what the difference is between your file and the one i downloaded? The one i downloaded previously is RUU_JEWEL_CL_JB43_SENSE50_MR_Sprint_WWE_4.13.651.3_Radio_1.13.11.1105_NV_3.02_003_PRL25007_release_353492_signed_one_step
And i dont care about anything getting erased - i want to totally wipe the phone clean anyhow so everything should be erased before I give it them.
Thanks
Oh and if it makes any difference, the current rom on the phone is the viper 3.17 rom
The difference has to do with some fixes related to the roaming options. I think that's the only major difference, at least that I can recall.

Is there any way to restore it using a rom? I tried resetting it using the RUU file but it's not working. It starts doing it's thing, says it's waiting for the bootloader at which point the phone restarts, shows me the HTC logo and then after a few minutes it says it failed and the phone stays on the HTC logo until i reset it.
Or do you have any suggestions on how to work around this problem?
Thanks
A ROM will only install software, not firmware. You need to do both, hence the RUU. Install HTC Sync on your computer so that you have the latest drivers. Reboot to the bootloader and connect your phone and computer in Fastboot USB mode. Afterwards, double-click the RUU file to start the installer. Shouldn't have any issues otherwise.

I'm actually fine if it just installs the software - as long as if she calls sprint the interface she sees is the one they expect her to see. She's not going to be bring the phone into a sprint store ...actually she wont even be on sprint, she uses straight talk. So it doesn't matter if the phone is rooted/unlocked etc. Just needs to be the interface support will expect there to be if she ever calls them and they tell her to do something.
thanks

Good enough. Just flash a Sense ROM and call it a day, then. I would at least make sure that you update the firmware version to match that of the ROM you decide to use. That's fairly simple since the phone is S-off.
there is a tool to do just this in Android Development. I'd start there
