Kernal issue or ROM issue? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Galaxy S2, I9100, original, I had the LoS Kernel from early on, and I have had recent troubles upgrading. I've upgraded to Dream Kernal, Siyah Kernal, and several other kernals. The phone boots when I load each individual rom, however, several services fails to load.
Am I missing something? I haven't updated this phone since it first came out, and after months of "update messages" from Sprint, I've decided to update it and I'm having difficulty. I've got CWM downloaded and I've used CWM to update each rom and kernel. If I could get some direction that'd be great. I just want the latest Android version and some type of superficial visual ROM ontop. I am generally very okay with each ROM, just upset that the current kernal leaves me with a failure of signal, causing me to reboot.

Update
I currently have Kernel version 3.043-rc1-Siyah-Dorimanx-V5.78-SGII-PWR-CORE and AOKP Version ThunderBolt Rom JB by ALHuessein Mohammed and Android version 4.1.1. . My Build is ThundrBolt by ALHussein Mohammed and I can't get any of my active services to work. Wifi doesn't work, sending texts doesnt work, surfing the internet doesn't work. Nothing. I get the phone to boot, but nothing comes of my boot. I have tried several different kernels, and different ROMs, but none of them seem to fix the issue of standard services working. I'd appreciate some help with the issues. My CWM version is 6.0.1.2-Siyah. I'm pretty confused on the whole matter.
As far as my knowledge goes, the Kernel is like the underlying infrastructure, and the ROM is like the OS. I don't really know what I've done to **** this **** up, but it's no longer functioning as a regular phone. I've used ODIN before, but seeing how I have CWM, I figured it wasn't required. Any help would be appreciated. Even setting my phone back to stock, since backing up my phone through CWM didn't actually do anything, since I can't restore back to my previous version.
I'm in dire need. Please assist.

So no one has any idea why my phone boots, but every active service fails to load? I guess I'll have to call this one a loss.

hey ma8 first and foremost u should have patience here on XDA.
bumping Post like this will lead u knowhere and people will simply ignore the same for sure
now coming back to ur issue what i would suggest u is this before jumping into kernel flashing thing have u checked in the ROM thread of the one ur using for what kernel people r using there r any kernel related post in that thread.
if not do the same first (search that thread for post that r similar to ur issues).
also u can try the latest Siyah kernel v4.1.5 and see

Several contradicting pieces of information here that I've bolded.
The I9100 is a GSM phone. Sprint is a CDMA network. The I9100 won't even work on Sprint's network.
When I google for "LoS kernel site:forum.xda-developers.com", the first result I get is for this, which is an Epic 4G Touch kernel.
These things tell me you are not in the correct forum for your device.
The Sprint variant for the Galaxy S2 is the Epic 4G Touch, and that forum is located at http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1281

Yeeeahh. I had searched Samsung Galaxy SII, and I was led here. I had forgotten that my particular phone was an Epic 4G Touch. Thanks for the direction.

{Attempting to go back to stock firmware problems?}

Hi All,
First off I apologize for my layman terms and my ignorance. I am a brand new Samsung Galaxy SII user. I have a plan with AT&T and mine is stock- My girlfriend is who has the problem, therefor I am asking for her.
She unlocked her Samsung Galaxy SII herself and is on an in-state cell provider. She has rooted her phone and encountered some problems... Calls not being heard, bottom touch buttons not working, etc. So currently we are working on getting it back to the stock i777 (it's on a 9100 and upgraded to 2.3.5) in hopes of returning it.
I downloaded Odin onto my computer in an attempt to help her. I downloaded the rooted system package because she wanted to keep her root, and I downloaded the Modem thingy to help with the calls not working. I thought I could just extract these and put them into Odin, but it's not doing anything :/ It recognizes them but starts to load up and then stays where it's at, and everything is the same.
I'm frustrated because Im a complete noob to all of this. I am used to iPhones and iPhone terms, and I am familiar with jailbreaking them. But things like Kernel, pit, modem, etc are all foreign words to me, so I am having trouble picking the right words to search for in the box.
Is there anyone that can lend a complete moron some help? I dont even know where to start. I'd love to get this fixed for my girl.
Flashing to i9100 ROMs are to the blame for all her issues. International versions are not compatible firmware and hardware wise with AT&T version. You will get button issue and call issues.
The problem you have is probably due to a newer boot loader being updated to the phone and it is refusing anything other than the i9100 ROMs.

Bootloaders don't do anything like that.
My suspicion is that it's some sort of driver problem. Beyond that, I don't know - I've never flashed from Windows before.
She shouldn't need to return her phone. Running an I9100 ROM and modem is known to cause ALL of the issues she's having.
Does her device have working Clockworkmod Recovery? If so, try flashing Cognition X2 from the development forums here. Make sure it's X2, not S2 - S2 is for the I9100. Cognition X2 is intended for our phone.
Thank you both for your replies so far! I am going to try the Cognition X2 and see how that works.
I had the same problem.
Use this as a guide fixed it:
Recovering an ATT Galaxy S2 after flashing GT-I9100 Firmware in the development section.
We got it fixed! Buttons work and so do the calls! Back on i777 too! Thanks!

Rooting your phone....

Just thought i would put this hear as any newbie's like me might think they know about flashing roms etc but you gotta be more careful with the SGS than any other phone i've rooted before IME...
I've always had HTC's before this first the HD2 then a Desire HD with both of those phones pretty much you can use whatever rom is on the appropriate XDA forum once you've read how to root and flash CWM...
My findings with the SGS are totally different...
I presume because there seem to be so many different versions around...
My example
Had my phone back from repair yesterday pretty keen to flash a custom rom on it, so firstly using odin i flashed Clockwork Mod Recovery 5.0.2.3 which after reading for a while i thought was a suitable Clockwork mod...
After installing this which seemed to work i had the CWM menu etc i flashed Checkrom V4 but had issue's with the display quality grey's/blue's are really sort of washed out colours...
Tried changing the kernel with the kitchen pro but that didn't make any difference...
Also i noticed messages in recovery saying "can't mount e:" on a few lines
Rom seemed to install fine too but as mentioned above had screen colour quality issue's...
So i re-installed the vodafone original rom that came with the phone and the colours were back as they should be i then did some more reading etc and found...
CF-Root-SGS2_XW_OXA_KK5_v5.0_CWM5
and this seemed to install properly i've put this time a Miui rom on and everything so far seems fine....
I gather though you need to select the correct CWM to suit the correct version of your phone ?
And even if it looks like its installed if you get the "Can't mount" messages when you try to wipe data its not installed correctly...
Sorry if this all seems obvious to the guys in the know but coming from a different brand where every rom and kernel pretty much seems to work with each version (provided you use a miui kernel with miui etc)
you really do need to be more cautious with the SGS 2 and get the correct rom/CWM or you can cause issue's i'm wondering if sometimes physical issue's as my phone's been off for repair 3 times... fingers crossed its sorted now...
I personally found it much easier!!
You just need to follow the instructions to the t... I personally recommend noobs to use the zerg rush exploit until they are comfortable with the phone and they have increased their knowledge. And then to flash with odin etc...

The problem is that Samsung marketed over a half dozen completely different phones as the "Galaxy SII". Many have completely different hardware by necessity due to running on different carriers. Some firmwares can kinda work with other phones (GT-I9100 with SGH-I777 with some minor tweaks), but for the most part, you have to stick with your model number. It's not exactly rocket science, but it can get easily confusing.
I have the HTC Desire as well and the difference is that that Samsung don't lock down their bootloaders like HTC (at least the SGSII is open). Therefore you might be looking for additional instructions which aren't there, as they aren't needed. Check out the many threads that discuss rooting.
but for the most part, you have to stick with your model number.

Thats what i thought but i've had issue's using I9100 CWM on my I9100 phone...
I need to specifically use the later version i posted as the 1st version that i thought would work wouldn't properly, dunno if maybe later phone's are slightly different mine is 6wks old...
Dunno thats what i found confusing.
I agree with the method of rooting the phone using Odin is easier than rooting the HTC's whats confusing for a newbie is matching up the correct roms, kernels,CWM that are 100% compatible with your phone, i presumed if i go to this section of the XDA forum "I9100 android development" that all the roms would work, but i'm finding most are making my phone's screen go funny, or at least the CWM might be not sure if the rom or the CWM bad install was to blame...

To add to the confusion, not all I9100 models are equal, either.
There are the standard I9100 models.
Then there are I9100G models, which have completely different processors (Tegra instead of Exynos) and GPUs (PowerVR SGX540 instead of ARM Mali-400). Firmwares for I9100 and I9100G are NOT compatible with each other for this reason.
There are also I9100T models, which for the most part, are simply Telstra branded I9100 models, as far as I know.
There are also I9100P models, which is the same as I9100, but with NFC added. MOSTLY the same, I9100 firmwares work, but I9100 firmwares will blow NFC support away. (but there's a re-enabler out there somewhere)
So when I say "stick to your model number", I mean, your FULL model number.

You either have a non SGSi9100 or one of the obscure variations or you are doing something wrong .
CWM roms kernels modems mix and match
i have yet to find a kernel that has not worked on any rom likewise all variations of CWM . Their are only two potential problems one wrong CSC and you may need to enter network settings yourself ,CWM a backup on CWM4 may not restore on CWM 5 . Modems are interchangeable .
At present i have three modems and five kernels all flashed within the last two weeks on existing rom .

how to install ICS from 2.3.6

Hi all,
I am trying to use one of these new ICS ROM from my current 2.3.6 ROM and every time the install fails and aborts. The install instructions for these new ICS roms seems the same, you load Clockwork and install. I'm sure I'm missing something stupid so any help is appreciated
Considering your other posts appear to be in the SGH-I777 forum, and this is the I9100 forum, take a guess at what you might be doing wrong.
Well seeing as my current boot screen shows I9100 i thought this was appropriate

Brilliant logic, love it.
Do you indeed have an I777?
P.S. Sticking an Apple bootscreen on your device doesn't turn it into an iPhone.
if ur on gb then simply do a factory wipe and install any stock ics tro odin,an always remember to backup ur efs folder....

the issue appears to be a signature verification error when i look closer at why the installation failed?
Putting a question mark a question does not make.
I'll ignore you since you ignored me.
Im not ignoring you i was driving to Cleveland for my sisters graduation. and Im trying to answer these all from my phone. should i give you priority so you can rip me again cuz i don't know as much about this stuff as you?
You know more than me, your model number for example.
oinkylicious is clearly asking you if you have a i9100 or a different device. If people with a different phone flashes a i9100 rom, it will either not boot or may be lucky to see a i9100 boot screen, but it does not indicate they have a i9100.
As said above check under the battery and see what it says. It would be best to do this, before you end up bricking your device due to flashing roms that will not work on your device.
By CWM it's very easy, but unhide your model before 9100 or 9100G
2.3.6 rooted ??
what is the SD-Ext size ?
yes it is an I777. It is rooted. It has an 8gig external card. I've had this rom on there for several months and it was starting to flake recently plus I have been waiting for more ICS roms to come out to avoid bug issues. As I had said earlier I only posted to this forum because the opening boot screen said I9100 which I attributed to the rom that was on there.

So you know you have an I777... well, I777 and I9100 are similar enough that firmwares won't completely brick your phone if you flash one meant for the other model, but they are different enough that things won't work right. Like the fact that the I777 has 4 capacitive keys, and the I9100 has 2 capacitive keys and 1 hardware key.
So I'm not sure why you thought flashing an I9100 firmware would work for you or solve whatever problem you were having... but it won't. You should be only flashing I777 ROMs and firmwares.

Installing wrong ROM. HELP

Hi,I rooted my phone then I installed new ROM but then, I installed Galaxy S2 I9100 JB ROM Which was I9100XXLSJ ROM
when I have Galaxy S2 SGH-i777. I know I'm stupid I didn't read it clearly it just said Galaxy S2 Jellybean
I have factory reset it but it is still the i9100 JB ROM not my old AT&T version
I used Odin3 v1.85 to do all this. I have downloaded several ROMs to see if it worked but when I opened them up it dont work with Odin and they said something about installing with SD card and stuff. I tried and i cant find the program and such.
At this moment I I just want my phone to work again. It don't matter if I use stock version of ICS as long it works again with ATT. because right now. my Back/Search doesn't work and Calling.
Please help, and give good explanations because I'm not very strong in electronics
If your phone will still enter download mode you can still fix it. Look through the stickies(important threads which have been given special status due to their importance and relevance) there are several that explain how to return to stock firmware. You should probably flash a full version of stock including the bootloaders as what you flashed may have contained I9100 bootloaders. But better safe than sorry. I've given you enough information to get started, let us know how it turns out.

[HELP THREAD] Galaxy S3 Ask any question.

There are a lot of people joining xda on daily basis, and there are a lot of repetitive questions being asked which fill up Development threads. Point them here. Feel free to ask or answer questions. Idea of this thread is to get users to help other users with their problems/questions. Please do not spoon feed, but rather point in the direction where that user can find an answer and educate himself
I don't actually have the GS3 unfortunately, but in order to make XDA a better place, I thought I'd open up a help thread for those who need it. I won't be able to give S3 specific help, but I can help in terms of general questions. Hopefully some of the experienced S3 help out on this thread, because it'd make everything easier. Thanks!
First thing first. I strongly advise you to read THIS thread before posting ANYTHING on XDA.
Then, have a quick look at the names of threads in post no2, you might find what you need right away.
For ROM issues please do mention in your post about:
ROM name
ROM version and base
kernel version and its settings
any mods applied on top of it
flashing "style" aka dirty or clean
something like this
...and be sure you have asked before on the ROM thread unless you have less than 10 posts on XDA
Third. Even if you do get your question answered, please, do come back and read threads in post no2 (coming later as soon as we start getting the guides) to educate yourself. You'll be surprised how much time and frustration it will save you in the future.
ASK ANY QUESTION HERE,adb, drivers, superCID etc...... You will either get an answer or will get pointed in the right direction.
No abuse towards noobs tolerated here! No question is stupid in this thread.
***I feel that a little OT is healthy to the success of this type of thread. The people here who help the most will develop a comradery therefore OT is allowed within reason. Common sense will be applied ***
HALL OF FAME
People who contributed most to this thread and helped countless number of people with their problems/questions. In no particular order.
Currently none. Hopefully soon.
Big thanks to Undercover and Xanthrax for this thread model

Stuck
Hey guys, i'm sort of a noob on these forums so any help would be great!
I've had previous experience with rooting because of my S2, no problems at all. I got my s3 about a month ago and I've been trying to figure out how to root it. It's a GT-I9300T ( Australian model ). It has a lot of Vodafone bloatware, however it's unlocked as i'm using an Optus sim card. I've also read that there aren't many differences between the international model and the T model, so any international ROM should work fine. It's running 4.3. I've read about how KNOX is built into 4.3 and makes rooting difficult by blocking the installation of custom Roms and disabling superSu. I'm not sure if i have Knox though, because i don't have a KNOX app installed; there are no KNOX related apps installed on my phone ( according to the all section of my applications manager ) and it says nothing about the KNOX counter in download mode. Is KNOX still present on my phone, and will i be able to install customs roms?
Also, what would be the best method of rooting? I have tried the saferoot method by Mrw0lf on YouTube, which is made not to trigger Knox. I've read about CF root and other methods involving Odin, have not tried any yet because i'm scared of bricking my phone. Any help or link would be helpful. Also, if something goes wrong; would i be able to flash a stock 4.3 ROM onto my phone using Odin? I'm downloading it now from sammobile and i was wondering if flashing anything through Odin would cause problems.
Lastly, is there a way to backup my EFs before rooting? I can't find them through the default file explorer and the folder is empty in 3rd party ones. I can't seem to find them when i go through my phone on my computer, i just want a backup before i try to root.
Anyway, vital phone info:
Model: GT-I9300T
Version: 4.3
Sorry for the long post, but any help would be cool. Also, i'm not that good with all the technical things behind rooting such as CSCs, basebands and such, so any simple explanation would be nice
Thank you! :fingers-crossed:
Good morning
Dont worry about knox
There no knox for S3 now matter what variant
Now secondly.
U can flash everything from i9300 on your i9300t however its advisable that when u flash roms that u maintain or re-flash afterwards the appropriate modem
As the only difference between models is the band frequency
To root it ... For myself the easyest way is ...
Grab philz recovery
Flash it with Odin
Afterward boot into recovery
Go to advanced and choose re-root system
Then just boot the ROM go to market and download supersu you're good to go
About backup efs there's a loooooot of apps to do so u just need the pick the one who's flavour suit u best
Take care
If u have doubts just pm me

Thanks for the reply!
I just rooted my phone using Cf auto root. I forgot the warranty was expired so why not It ended up working, now running CyanogenMod 11 nightly About the modem, the reception seems the same. The signal i got before I rooted wasn't that great, haha. But i'll probably flash the modem anyway, just in case. I found a thread with most of the modems for the s3 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/ref-galaxy-s3-modem-radio-collection-t1740061
All the modems are for jellybean, however the ROM i'm on ( CyanogenMod 11 ) is on kitkat. Can i flash any of those modems? For the T model, they say there's no regional or carrier specific one, even though i checked my modem on sammobile and it's not listed in the thread. The latest one is for 4.1.2, i'm on 4.4.2. Should i flash it? Also, can you flash it in CWM, or does it have to be through Odin?
Edit: Seeing as you're a fellow S3 user, have you experienced any lag or freezing with your phone? It happened quite a lot pre root, but i just thought it was due to the bloatware. And Touchwiz, haha. But it's happening with CyanogenMod 11 as well. I know that it's a nightly and that bugs are to be expected however i have an S2 running CyanogenMod 11 as well, and there's nowhere near as much lag. Any ideas? I reset the phone and re installed the ROM twice, mainly because i forgot to flash Gapps XD Any ideas? Should i do a full factory reset, free up some space? I know that there's 2gb left on both the phone and my SD card.
Anyway, thanks for all of your help so far!

If u flashed cm u have retained same modem so no need to update modem
Just leave it be.
About lag no my phone runs just good no matter what aosp or recent stock rom
Check your kernel config or go for a custom one a and set him up to what suits u best.
I use agni kernel on cm alongside with a optimised profile
And even with a UV of CPU and GPU my phone runs real smooth and saves juice

ive got experience with flashing custom roms and know how to do it but im quite paranoid which is why i have this question. Im currently running foxhound 2.4 on S# GT-i9300 with siyah kernel and i want to flash slimkat 4.4.2 build 3. i was just wondering if siyah kernel will get in the way of the flashing. Will i need to flash stock kernel then flash slimkat/gapps or does slimkat have install its own kernel in which case i guess i should just flash normally.
Device: galaxy s3 i9300
ROM name: Foxhound
ROM version and base: 2.4
Build number: jzo54k.i9300xxemb5
kernel version and its settings: 3.0.31-siyah-1.8.9+

I think you should probably full wipe before flashing another rom. Then you should be good to go to flash slimkat and gapps.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
and youll need to change kernel.

SD Issues ? backwards "u"
My Wife is on her 2nd SD card with the same issues. I copy all of her pics and some videos from her move them to the Sd card. When going into my files it says there is 500+gbs on it! The file path extsdcard/Android has 467 gbs and 471 folders. Then there is a data folder but the D in data is a backwards u then ata. This folder says it is 467gbs with all folders named with crazy looking characters. I did try and search forums but could not find where to post and didn't want to get yelled at by the "Geniuses" on here for posting in the wrong place or not searching well enough. So if u could please get me to the right place it would be much appreciated. All the files are pics and vids of kids and thankfully we have auto backup in with google otherwise it seems we would lose all photos and vids. Thanks. Please see attached pics for reference
S3 4.0.4 stock rom
I had installed android 4.3 on s3 but then I installed 4.0.4 after that I had no gsm connectivity see the block sign between battery and wifi. I have gsm connectivity on 4.3 but not on 4.0.4. A guy told me that it has something to do with the bootloader. I wish to install 4.0.4 stock ICS BTU rom if there's a way do tell me. Thanks in anticipation!
i am using GlamourS4 5.0 rom and googy max2 kernel
the first problem i have is when i pressed the emergency call button on the lockscreen,
it did show anything such as the keyboard and the signal will stop a few seconds and come back.
second, i found the nfc not working anymore in my phone.
the nfc and s beam tag are greyed when i try to turn them on.
can anyone can solve my problems?
Anyone for my weird Network problem...?
I recently rooted my S3 via the CF Root method. Flashed CWM Recovery 6.0.4.4 via Odin.
That's it.
And now this weird problem-
My network is lost anytime! And the phone even doesn't say "Not registered on network" or something like that!
My phone was working properly and suddenly a friend of mine messaged me that he tried calling me but it said that my phone was switched off! I also noticed that at time even the data connection was not working. NO! It's not that it didn't show it isn't connected to the network or the data is disabled! The signal in the status bar was of 4 bars as it is and there was this symbol of 3G beside it. I tried calling my friend but the call got cancelled! I redialed, I didn't hear anything and then again the vibration saying the call was cancelled! I called up on my S3 through my landline number which also said that it was switched off -but not immediately. Whenever someone called me, they didn't hear anything for a long time of a minute or two and THEN it said that my mobile was switched off. I tried selecting my network operator manually, it said 'Registered on Network' but still I couldn't receive or make calls or use my internet data. But I could always send or receive SMSs!! It means it was connected to my network. The only solution was to reboot the phone after which it worked fine for a few hours. FOR FEW HOURS ONLY!
Now it happens at least 2-3 times per day and it has been important for me to check whether the data connection actually working and I'm able to access the internet or not because that's the only way to find whether someone can call me or not!
How do I fix this? I'm having my exams now and I don't have time to setup my phone again by changing ROMs!
Please tell me a way to fix this without changing my ROM!
I'm on Android 4.3 Stock ROM.

Google search question
Hello everyone.
I have noticed a strange behaviour of Google search after flashing SlimKat 3.9 and 3.10. Settings for search applications and contacts on the phone are gone. Is it a new update from Google or a bug? Fresh install didn't help. Screenshot attached.

Could be to do with the EFS partition. 4.3 uses a different version and apparently problems can occur when trying to revert to an earlier version. As far as I have read elsewhere, the problem can be verified by checking the IMEI number in settings - if it is all zeros it has been corrupted and will cause what you describe. I'm afraid I don't have a solution but hopefully this info might help you move a bit closer to one.
Another SlimKat question. According to battery stats, it seems that my wi-fi is always on. I've used 3g only since last charge and wi-fi is off in settings. Can it be helped somehow? Screenshot attached.
